White Peak lays bare its house style and its oldest whisky yet with Wire Works Bourbon Barrel – English Whisky News

White Peak lays bare its house style and its oldest whisky yet

with Wire Works Bourbon Barrel

Award-winning Derbyshire Distillery – White Peak – hits a landmark this summer with the Distillery’s oldest whisky yet: Wire Works Bourbon Barrel.

This milestone bottling is the Distillery’s first release to be fully matured in ex-bourbon barrels, featuring some of the oldest casks in White Peak’s warehouse since its inception in 2016.

Wire Works Bourbon Barrel is a vatting of a select parcel of American oak, first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and bottled at 53.5%. Each cask was filled with Wire Works’ signature lightly-peated single malt spirit and has developed into a beautifully balanced complex spirit, showcasing the fruit-forward character of the Distillery.

The new release will join Wire Works Caduro as the second permanent expression in White Peak’s core range of products, a significant marker in the legacy being laid down by the Distillery.

Max Vaughan, founder of White Peak Distillery, said: “We’re so excited to be releasing our second permanent expression to build on our core range of whiskies following Caduro last year.  Bourbon Barrel is a signature whisky for us, elevating our house style and showcasing our unique flavour elements; our Derbyshire home, lightly-peated malt barley, fresh local Brewer’s yeast, long fermentation and slow distillation.”

“Ex-bourbon barrels are considered to be relatively inactive and so their exclusive use in maturation can really highlight a distillery’s true house character.  It’s over 6 years since we fired up the stills, and we feel the time is right in 2024 to open up our soul with this release. This is some of our oldest liquid from some of our favourite casks, and we hope White Peak whisky lovers will enjoy it as much as we’ve enjoyed our journey so far”

Since the first Wire Works release in February 2022, White Peak has released several whiskies under the house Wire Works Whisky name, including Caduro in 2023 – the first permanent edition to the White Peak range of whiskies – and a number of limited editions.

As with all Wire Works whiskies, Bourbon Barrel is natural colour and non-chill filtered. The release will be available from 5th July via the Distillery shop and online, as well as from select trade partners nationwide, RRP: £65 per 70cl.

White Peak Distillery is open Monday – Saturday for shop visitors, with tours available every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. For availability, timings and to book, please visit: www.whitepeakdistillery.co.uk

About White Peak Distillery:

Nestled in the heart of Derbyshire, White Peak Distillery stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of innovation and craftsmanship for which this region is renowned. The White Peak journey started with a vision and purpose, rather than any grand marketing plan. To create an authentic English single malt whisky that honours the maker traditions that put Derbyshire on the global map.  This legacy informs the Distillery’s decisions around whisky-making, its place in the community and establishing a destination to celebrate the craft of distilling.

The discovery of the former Johnson & Nephew Wire Works site was a pivotal moment for the founders. The Victorian era industrial buildings, rich with character and history, were once at the heart of a community, employing over 500 people. The Wire Works is more than just a location; it is a symbol of the region’s heritage. The process of renovating and repurposing this building wasn’t just about creating a space for whisky production; it was about breathing new life into a building with character and extending the legacy of making. This spirit of innovation, respect for the past and sense of place has resulted in a whisky with a unique character.

White Peak was founded in 2016 by local couple Max & Claire Vaughan and, although a few years have passed, in whisky terms the business is still a start-up. Over the past eight years, the team has meticulously crafted its approach, and the launch of Wire Works Whisky in early 2022 has already led to several international awards.  The recognition is not only for its fruit-forward, lightly-peated single malt but also for the whisky packaging, which honours the back story of the Wire Works. A considered, makers mindset permeates throughout the business.

White Peak has developed a true connection with the region. One example is the use of fresh brewer’s yeast from a local Peak District brewery, contributing flavour that is unique to Wire Works Whisky.  The thoughtful design and construction of the distillery itself includes equipment and engineering sourced locally in county, with every element carefully unpacked to enhance the whisky’s character.  The entire process happens on site, from mashing and fermentation, through distillation, maturation and bottling – a full life-cycle of Derbyshire provenance.  Each stage of whisky-making is designed to develop layers of flavour, and creating a whisky that is a true reflection of Derbyshire’s rich heritage.

Whereas the first series emphasized the production process that impacts the flavor of Maker’s Mark, the second series will focus on the teams behind Maker’s Mark. The first release within this series will shine a light on the unique taste vision inspired by the distillery team – the makers of Maker’s Mark, who craft its handmade bourbon in Loretto, Kentucky.

“Always staying true to my grandparents, our founders’ vision to deliver a full-flavored, soft red winter wheat bourbon with a smooth finish, Maker’s Mark continues to shape the brand’s future through purposeful, flavor-driven innovation,” said Rob Samuels, eighth generation whisky maker and Managing Director for Maker’s Mark. “This Wood Finishing Series release celebrates the entire distillery team, who share our vision and who have contributed their perspective to craft the final expression.”

Fruit forward, with caramel, maple, and chocolate notes, The Heart Release features a rich, creamy mouthfeel that is a pure delight.  For more information, please visit www.MakersMark.com.

About Maker’s Mark®

In 1953, in Loretto, Ky. Bill Samuels, Sr., fulfilled his dream to create a handmade and delicious bourbon. He decided to make his whisky in small batches, using soft red winter wheat to enhance the softness and sweetness. He then rotated each barrel by hand for consistency and, finally, aged each barrel to taste. While he developed the bourbon, his wife Margie Samuels ideated the bourbon’s name and label, standout bottle shape, iconic and signature look that still involves hand-dipping each bottle in red wax to this day. Together as co-founders, Bill and Margie transformed bourbon from a “commodity” into a premium handmade spirit, and today Maker’s Mark® Kentucky Straight Bourbon continues to be crafted in the same, purposeful way.

In recent years, Maker’s Mark has introduced thoughtful, super-premium innovations to its portfolio, including Maker’s Mark 46, Maker’s Mark Cask Strength, and Maker’s Mark Cellar-Aged, all Double Gold winners of the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, as well as Maker’s Mark Private Selection: the brand’s custom barrel program.  Maker’s Mark is the largest bourbon distillery in the world to achieve B Corp Certification and the first distillery to achieve Regenified certification, a reflection of the brand’s dedication towards building a more inclusive and sustainable economy. EXPERIMENTAL WHISKY CROSSES MADEIRA CASKS’ SWEETNESS WITH ARDBEG’S CLASSIC SMOKE – Islay Scotch Whisky News

EXPERIMENTAL WHISKY CROSSES MADEIRA CASKS’
SWEETNESS WITH ARDBEG’S CLASSIC SMOKE

< Aged 14 years, The Unicorn’s Tale is the second release
in Distillery’s Anthology Collection of rare and strange malts >

Ardbeg Islay single malt whisky today reveals a beguilingly sweet and smoky bottling – the second release in its Anthology Collection of rare and strange single malts. Ardbeg Anthology: The Unicorn’s Tale is Ardbeg’s first whisky matured in a marriage of Madeira wine casks and bourbon casks. Aged 14 years, this intriguing limited edition whisky takes smoky-malt lovers on a flavour-filled canter through powerful bursts of smoke, notes of banana, menthol and lime.

The Ardbeg Anthology Collection comprises unusual single malts from the Distillery, which cross classic Ardbeg with experimental stock for new flavour combinations. In homage to these whiskies’ outlandish “hybrid” style, each malt’s name and packaging are inspired by a different mythological creature, which some say they have glimpsed on Islay (although others are understandably sceptical…).

A dark horse of a dram, The Unicorn’s Tale fuses the tropical sweetness of whisky aged in Madeira casks with Ardbeg’s trademark zesty, smoky notes, resulting in a fruity, aromatic and smoky creation. It follows Ardbeg Anthology’s inaugural release, The Harpy’s Tale, which marries classic Ardbeg with the Distillery’s first whisky aged in Sauternes sweet white wine casks.

Dr Bill Lumsden, Ardbeg’s Director of Whisky Creation, said: “At Ardbeg we love to experiment with how we can push our spirit’s smoky balance into new worlds of flavour. Some time ago, we decided to try maturing Ardbeg in unusual cask types for the distillery to create sweet and smoky ‘hybrids’– and so the Anthology Collection was born.

“The Unicorn’s Tale is the second release in this series, which has been created by marrying classic Ardbeg matured in bourbon casks with a parcel of whisky wholly matured in sweet Madeira wine casks. The outcome is a whisky bursting with notes of banana bread and tropical fruit, fused with Ardbeg’s hallmark flavours of camphor, lime zest and wood smoke. This 14-year-old whisky may appear sweet in nature, but its smoky side is not to be underestimated!”

Priced at £130 with an ABV of 46%, Ardbeg Anthology: The Unicorn’s Tale will be available for purchase on ardbeg.com, in Ardbeg Embassies, at the Distillery Visitor Centre on Islay and in selected whisky specialists.

RRP: £130

Tasting notes

Colour Pure Gold

Aroma Rich, sweet, aromatic and fruity, baked banana bread and syrupy sponge pudding fill the senses. Notes of treacle trot into a distinctive suggestion of burning cedarwood. A splash of water releases a bounty of tropical fruits. Eucalyptus oil mingles with soft, aromatic smoke.

Taste Zesty notes of lime and sweet peaches canter across the palate. A burst of rich smoked fruit and baked bread prance into antiseptic lozenges, creosote, and aniseed. Soft barley malt combines with nutmeg and peat smoke.

Finish The influence of these rare Madeira casks is undeniable. A whimsically smoky finish welcomes a long and lingering aftertaste of menthol, clove, wood smoke and camphor.

Ardbeg:

Ardbeg prides itself on being The Ultimate Islay Malt Whisky. Established in 1815, Ardbeg is revered by connoisseurs around the world as the peatiest, smokiest and most complex of all the Islay malts. Despite its smokiness, Ardbeg is renowned for its delicious sweetness, a phenomenon that has affectionately become known as ‘the peaty paradox’. During the 1980s and 1990s, Ardbeg suffered from an uncertain future, and it was not until the brand was purchased by The Glenmorangie Company in 1997 that the Distillery was saved from extinction. Since then, the Distillery has risen like a phoenix and today Ardbeg is well-established as a niche, cult malt, with a passionate following. Today, Ardbeg is one of the world’s most highly awarded smoky single malt whiskies.

Ardbeg Committee:

The legacy of the whisky was safeguarded in 2000 by the formation of the Ardbeg Committee. The Committee is made up of thousands of Ardbeg followers worldwide who are keen to ensure that “the doors of Ardbeg never close again”. Today there are more than 180,000 members of the Ardbeg Committee in over 130 countries. Committee Members are regularly consulted on new bottlings and expressions and are offered exclusive Committee bottlings. Members also receive invitations to special gatherings, tastings and events. The Committee, chaired by Jackie Thomson, is free to join at Ardbeg.com.

Awards:

Ardbeg is one of the world’s most highly awarded smoky single malt whiskies.  Since 2008, Ardbeg has won more than 50 gold and double gold medals in key whisky competitions.  Ardbeg has twice been awarded ‘World’s Best Single Malt’ at the World Whiskies Awards (2010, 2013).  At the 2014 Global Icons of Whisky Awards, Mickey Heads was voted ‘Distillery Manager of the Year’.  The following year, Ardbeg’s expressions took the top three spots in Whisky Advocate magazine’s review of the best single malt Scotch whiskies under US$100.  Meanwhile, both Ardbeg Corryvreckan and Ardbeg Uigeadail have been awarded gold medals at the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Ardbeg Anthology Collection:

This experimental collection comprises rare and experimental Ardbegs, each created from intriguing cask combinations entirely new to the Distillery. Each whisky in the series takes its name from a mythological creature.

The Harpy’s Tale: The series’ first single malt was released in August 2023. Aged for 13 years in a combination of classic bourbon and sweet Sauternes wine casks, this unique Ardbeg is characterised by a tussle between powerful smoke and rich sweetness.

The Unicorn’s Tale: The second whisky in the collection combines classic Ardbeg aged in bourbon casks with whisky fully matured in Malmsey Madeira casks – the sweetest and most prized of the Madeira wines.

The Glenmorangie Company:

The Company is one of the most renowned and innovative distillers and marketers of Scotch whisky brands worldwide and is part of Moët Hennessy, the wine and spirits division of Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. Headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, the Company produces Glenmorangie Single Highland Malt whisky and Ardbeg Single Islay Malt.

ABOUT BOWMORE®

For over 240 years, the Bowmore Distillery has been capturing the essence of Islay from the shores of its remote island home. Shaped by centuries of skill and tradition, Bowmore’s single malt harnesses the power of this time in every single drop, defined by the past and savoured in the present.

Time is defining at Bowmore® and we tirelessly harness the power of time to shape our whiskies. Our distillery’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of our fruity and smoky single malts. Today, we are amongst one of a few distilleries which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by a traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery.  Water for the whiskies is specially drawn from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones – the same Islay peat that fires the malt-drying kiln.

Bowmore® Distillery’s proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of its spirit and gives a hint of sea air to the character. The legendary Bowmore® No. 1 Vaults is where most of the whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault’s sea-facing wall.

Matured in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry, or claret, over time developing rich and mellow flavours until the expertise of our whisky makers deems them ready for bottling.  It is this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people, and tradition that makes Bowmore the exceptional single malt it is today.

Time is marked on each and every bottle of Bowmore, proudly and boldly as a marker of where and when each one’s journey began.  This is our story of time. This is Bowmore; the Art of Time since 1779.

Kentucky Bourbon Trail ® Celebrates 25th Anniversary and Ushers in Adventurous New Era of Bourbon Tourism

Kentucky Bourbon Trail® Celebrates 25th Anniversary and Ushers in Adventurous New Era of Bourbon Tourism

Federal, State, and Local Officials Join Celebration of Industry’s Impact Across Kentucky Through its Thriving Global Tourist Attraction

FRANKFORT, KY.— In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the world-famous Kentucky Bourbon Trail® tour is getting a bold new look, a sleek new digital experience for visitors to build their own amber adventure, and a reimagined future by combining the original excursion with its Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour®.

Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman, Congressman Andy Barr, co-chair of the Congressional Bourbon Caucus, and Kentucky Sen. David Yates of Louisville unveiled the newly reimagined Kentucky Bourbon Trail® before 200 Bourbon luminaries at the Frazier History Museum along historic Whiskey Row in Louisville.

The new-look Bourbon Trail™ experience will showcase 46 of the Commonwealth’s finest distilleries, giving visitors more options to plan their trip and fully focus their attention on the laid-back hospitality, local culture and cuisine, scenic hidden gems and natural wonders on their journey.

The Kentucky Distillers’ Association created the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® pilgrimage in 1999 to educate visitors on the art and science behind making America’s only native spirit.  It was America’s first spirits tour and has since welcomed more than 18 million visitors from all 50 states and dozens of countries.

“We knew we had something special, but we never could have dreamed it would evolve from a simple industrial tour of distilleries into an international bucket list experience filled with rare and behind-the-scenes adventures,” Gregory said.

Following rapid growth and innovation by distillers, the KDA created the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour® in 2012 to showcase smaller distilleries. Its 28 craft distilleries will now join the 18 members of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® tour, forming one statewide Bourbon Trail™ experience.

“All Kentucky distilleries – big and small have invested hundreds of millions of dollars into their tourism experiences, resulting in record-breaking economic development, jobs, tax dollars, restaurants, hotels, and more that build off of Bourbon’s popularity.

“It’s a lucrative path for Bourbon to give back to local communities.”

Elected Officials Toast the Past and Cheer the Future

Congressman Barr’s Congressional Bourbon Caucus is a bipartisan group of members that are dedicated to strengthening the Bourbon industry and educating other Representatives on legislative and regulatory issues that impact it.

“As we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®, we honor the tradition, craftsmanship, and economic vitality that Bourbon brings to our Commonwealth,” said Rep. Barr, who is from Lexington, one of the KBT’s official Gateway communities.

“This milestone underscores our rich heritage and the global recognition of Kentucky as the true home of Bourbon. Cheers to another 25 years of excellence and innovation in one of our homegrown signature industries!”

Rep. Morgan McGarvey, co-chair of the Congressional Bourbon Caucus, was scheduled to participate in the event but had an unexpected emergency. Sen. Yates, the chamber’s Minority Whip and former President of the Louisville Metro Council, stepped in to discuss the KBT’s local and state impact.

“It’s been amazing to see how the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® and Bourbonism has revitalized tourism in Louisville, especially on our historic Whiskey Row,” Sen. Yates said. “Bourbon is unique to our Commonwealth and important to its future.  I’m proud to work alongside legislators on both sides of the aisle and each level of government to protect and elevate its importance in Kentucky.”

To celebrate the 25th anniversary and all that is to come, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® received special recognition from the federal and state government. U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell’s tribute in the Congressional Record honored the success of the Kentucky landmark.

 “I want to thank all those involved for their stewardship of Kentucky’s heritage and their work to build our State’s vibrant Bourbon industry,” McConnell said. “As the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® celebrates its silver jubilee, I’d like to extend my best wishes to its dedicated team and all the hard-working Kentuckians who have contributed to the enduring popularity and legacy of Bourbon whiskey.”

Additionally, Governor Andy Beshear proclaimed June 20, 2024, as “Bourbon Trail™ Day in the Commonwealth.” Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman delivered the proclamation and offered a toast to the KBT’s past and future.

“For years, Kentucky’s signature spirit has spurred tourism and economic development helping build our communities,” she said. “With billions in Bourbon investments underway and a bright new future for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® tour, the world will continue to know that the Commonwealth of Kentucky is the undisputed home of Bourbon.”

A Global Bucket-List Future for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® Adventure

To plan for the future of the behemoth tourist attraction, the KDA engaged IQS Research to personally interview thousands of KBT® visitors over the last year. The findings clearly proved that the Bourbon Trail™ is elevating Kentucky tourism with an affluent demographic featuring:

  • 76% of visitors come from outside of Kentucky;
  • Visitors are coming in packs and staying in the region for 3 to 5 days;
  • Guests typically spend between $600 and $1,400 on dining, entertainment, lodging, and transportation.
  • More than 60% have incomes above $100,000;
  • 60% of visitors are male, 36% female, 4% non-binary;
  • 12% identified as a racial minority and 7% identified as LGBTQIA+;
  • 91% discovered a new product or Bourbon brand during their trip; and
  • 97% were highly satisfied with their distillery experience, and 96% would recommend the KBT® to their family and friends.

Following a nationwide search for a marketing partner to help formulate the Bourbon Trail’s future, the KDA began working with Nashville-based agency Lewis.

Utilizing the IQS data and the KDA’s biennial economic impact report, the Lewis team held in-depth interviews with leadership and frontline employees at Kentucky Bourbon Trail® attractions and conducted further in-depth research in key feeder markets to collect potential visitors’ impressions.

The impressive result is an all-new brand identity that is modern, adventurous, and reflective of the new and elevated offerings at distilleries. The new logo embraces the rich colors and textures of the Commonwealth’s Bourbon legacy and features typography that’s symbolic of iconic trailhead signs, evoking a keen sense of adventure.

Recognizing the Trail™ experience can no longer be completed in a long weekend, the reimagined Kentucky Bourbon Trail® will shift away from incentivizing the desire to quickly finish the journey to instead slowing down, savoring the adventure and exploring the possibilities.

Visitors will begin to see the changes throughout the summer, including:

  • A fresh new look that conveys a sense of discovery, elevated adventure and attainable luxury;
  • A combined Kentucky Bourbon Trail® and Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour® into one Bourbon Trail™ program;
  • An all-new digital experience to help guests explore and prepare for their trip like never before;
  • Ability to Build Your Own Bourbon Trail®, allowing visitors to imagine and explore a wide range of possible itineraries before they ever arrive in Kentucky. #BYOBT

“Our guides on the frontline of the Bourbon Trail™ know there is an experience that’s perfect for each and every visitor, and the reimagined Kentucky Bourbon Trail® will be even easier to explore and discover,” said Jes Pendergrass, Chair of the KDA Board of Directors and General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer at Heaven Hill.

“Just as every Bourbon is a unique expression, each distillery brings its own personality to the visitor experience, and the Bourbon Trail™ has more offerings than ever before. We encourage our visitors to take their time, sip and savor each moment, and come back often to relax and enjoy our laid-back Kentucky Bourbon culture.”

Katie Peninger, Vice President of Account Service at Lewis, said, “What we learned is that Bourbon tourists know what they want, why they’re here, and what their priorities are. With #BYOBT, the visitor decides what’s important, and the website presents them with the distilleries, hotels and restaurants that match their preferences.”

Visitors can follow Kentucky Bourbon Trail® on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date and be the first to know when the new digital experiences are ready for use. For more information, go to www.kybourbontrail.com.

BERRY BROS. & RUDD EXPLORES A SENSE OF PLACE IN NEW WHISKY RELEASE – Scotch Whisky News

BERRY BROS. & RUDD EXPLORES A SENSE OF PLACE IN

NEW SPIRITS RELEASE

Berry Bros. & Rudd, the oldest wine and spirits merchant in Britain, has launched a new spirits collection exploring “A Sense of Place”, drawing inspiration from iconic and vibrant landscapes across the world and their impact on flavour. The 2024 one off collection which is part of an annual release of curated spirits is divided into two parts: Glens & Valleys and Coast & Shores, with each bottling reflecting the essence of their surroundings.

The first release in the series ‘Glens & Valleys’ includes 10 exceptional Scottish whisky distilleries, each rooted in landscapes as rich and varied as the spirits they produce. Scotland’s rugged glens and serene valleys are carved by ancient glaciers and centuries of history. Many distilleries are strategically nestled in these locations, where access to pristine water sources is abundant. These waters, essential for the distilling process, play a crucial role in defining the character of each whisky.

From the foothills of the Grampian mountains to the Valley of the Garioch, the Glens & Valleys series recognises some of Scotland’s most scenic destinations and celebrates the heritage and artistry of the different distilleries. The second release, ‘Coasts & Shores’, will be released in Autumn 2024 and will explore a selection of whiskies and rums from iconic coastal landscapes around the world.

Felix Dear, Spirits Curator at Berry Bros. & Rudd, said:

“This release is a testament to nature and craftsmanship. As you explore these whiskies, you embark on a sensory expedition through some of Scotland’s most cherished and secluded spots.

“You’ll find whiskies that epitomise the distinctiveness of their respective distilleries, alongside the landscape they reside in; while others have the additional influence of flavour through varied cask finishes. These special editions have been infused with distinct flavours from casks sourced through our long-standing relationships with world-class producers.”

The 2024 Glens & Valleys collection will be available from 20th June 2024 and includes 25 bottlings from 10 distilleries.

TASTING NOTES

Blair Athol, 2010, Sauternes Finish Cask #30323

Blair Athol Distillery sits in the foothills of the Grampian mountains – the gateway to the Scottish Highlands. The distillery’s ancient water source flows from the slopes of Ben Vrackie, into the Allt Dour Burn – “The Burn of the Otter”.

Tasting notes:

Ripe orchard fruits drenched in honey vie with vanilla, caramel and a subtle oak spice. The palate tells a tale of complexity and refinement: stewed apples and peaches, softened by the sweet caress of Sauternes, dance with ginger warmth and a hint of nutmeg. The finish is long and satisfying, leaving echoes of sweet fruit and luscious honey.

ABV: 56.3% | RRP £105

Blair Athol, 2011, Pedro Ximenez Finish Cask #304166

Blair Athol Distillery sits in the foothills of the Grampian mountains – the gateway to the Scottish Highlands. The distillery’s ancient water source flows from the slopes of Ben Vrackie, into the Allt Dour Burn – “The Burn of the Otter”.

Tasting notes:

On the nose, stewed plums and ripe figs emerge, accompanied by a hint of polished oak and warming spices. The palate unravels with layers of dark chocolate, raisins, and a subtle hint of mint, all beautifully integrated with Blair Athol’s distinctive malty core. The finish is long and luxuriant, leaving a lingering sweetness reminiscent of a treacle tart cooling on a windowsill, with a concluding whisper of orange zest and clove.

ABV: 57.7% | RRP £100

Glen Elgin, 2012 Cask #807729

Located in a valley beside the Speyside hamlet of Fogwatt, Glen Elgin was the last Scottish distillery established during the Victorian era. It draws its water from the nearby Millbuies Springs, a source it shares with Linkwood distillery.

Tasting notes:

The nose opens with white sugars sprinkled atop warm, homemade shortbread. Split vanilla pods reveal their seeds, intertwining with a gentle breeze of orchard freshness. Tasting reveals a note of green apple and pear, adding a crisp edge to the creamy texture. A sprinkle of white pepper introduces a medium finish, where the initial sweetness gently recedes, leaving behind a hint of floral honey.

ABV: 59% | RRP £75

Glen Elgin, 2008, Moscatel Finish Cask #805333

Located in a valley beside the Speyside hamlet of Fogwatt, Glen Elgin was the last Scottish distillery established during the Victorian era. It draws its water from the nearby Millbuies Springs, a source it shares with Linkwood distillery.

Tasting notes:

This is a dram that captures the colour of dawn’s first light. Its bouquet unfolds with delicate floral whispers, beautifully adorned with sultanas and sun-dried grapes. On the palate, crisp apples and juicy pears sit atop grapey undertones, enriched by the lushness of strawberries and cream. The finish is elegant, with a subtle hint of spice and the warmth of oak, perfectly complementing the light, grapey sweetness.

ABV: 55% | RRP £115

Glen Garioch, 2011, Oloroso Finish Cask #1100001332

Founded in 1797, Glen Garioch is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries. The distillery’s founders, John and Alexander Manson, chose the “Valley of the Garioch” to build their distillery as it was known for producing the best barley in the country.

Tasting notes:

As you approach the glass, the air fills with the scent of autumnal orchards, where apples and pears lie nestled amongst fallen leaves. The first sip reveals sun-drenched raisins and dark chocolate, all swathed in the warmth of seasoned oak. The Oloroso cask weaves threads of nutty sweetness and spice, atop a sprinkle of cinnamon. This is a journey through the seasons, from the last golden days of summer into the heart of a fireside winter’s evening.

ABV: 56.9% | RRP £115

Glenburgie, 2008, Marsala Finish Cask #87

Located between the Speyside towns of Forres and Alves, Glenburgie sits on a site rumoured to have housed an illicit distillery in the early 19th century. Its single cask bottlings are seldom seen, but much desired.

Tasting notes:

Stewed peaches and apricots lead the charge on the nose of this delightful whisky, with a rich undercurrent of dried fruits and butterscotch. After this initial impression, the Marsala cask’s influence radiantly shines through, with dates, prunes, and crème brûlée apparent. The finish is elegantly long, with a sweetness reminiscent of caramelised nuts and dried roses.

ABV: 59.1% | RRP £105

Glendullan, 2011 Cask #310541

Built during the whisky boom of the late 19th century, Glendullan Distillery is based in the “malt whisky capital” of Dufftown, sitting in a glen with the river Fiddich flowing beside it. Glendullan, in Gaelic translates to “valley of the standing stone or rock”.

Tasting notes:

The nose opens with a subtle blend of vanilla and green apple, leading to an oily texture on the palate that carries through ripe pear and a hint of cinnamon. As it unfolds, a slight oakiness and a whisper of white pepper add depth without dominating, culminating in a balanced and complex finish. Initially delicate and reserved, this whisky blossoms to reveal a full-bodied and richly textured character.

ABV: 58.2% | RRP £80

Linkwood, 2010, Pedro Ximenez Finish Cask #301242

Founded in 1821, Linkwood is one of Speyside’s unsung heroes. The distillery is situated on the outskirts of Elgin, a town whose name is thought to derive from the Celtic word “Aille”, signifying a beautiful place or valley.

Tasting notes:

A rich panorama of scents unfolds, led by raisins and accented with a subtle treacle sweetness. The influence of the PX cask is evident on the palate, providing a luxurious texture that cradles the concentrated flavours of dried fruits. Spices whisper in the background, enhancing the dram’s depth without overshadowing the foundational sweetness and fruitiness.

ABV: 54.9% | RRP £105

Aged at Buffalo Trace Distillery, this limited-edition release is bottled at 126 proof and crafted with the highest standards of quality and innovation first introduced to the industry by its namesake.

Highly regarded as the “Father of the Modern Bourbon Industry,” Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. purchased O.F.C. Distillery (now Buffalo Trace Distillery) in 1869. Here, the whiskey trailblazer crafted straight rye whiskey over 100 years before its resurgence in the American whiskey landscape. He made an immediate mark on the industry by modernizing, expanding, and upgrading the plant with state-of-the-art grain equipment and a first-of-its-kind steam heating system still used in barrel warehouses in Buffalo Trace Distillery today. Taylor is celebrated for, among many things, playing an instrumental role in the passage of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897.

“Colonel Taylor’s impact on the bourbon industry is immeasurable and, more than 130 years after the construction of his famous and innovative Warehouse C, Buffalo Trace Distillery remains committed to producing exceptional whiskey with the finest quality ingredients,” said Andrew Duncan, Global Brand Director at Buffalo Trace Distillery. “Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Barrel Proof Rye Bourbon Whiskey is an exceptional uncut, unfiltered expression that pays homage to the E.H. Taylor’s pioneering vision.”

This expression of Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. is the ideal blend of barrel proof strength and fresh rye spice. On the nose it has an aroma of white pepper and nutty undertones, with a touch of fresh floral and candied apricot. A sip brings a range of complex flavors, balancing the sweet, dried stone fruit with pepper and oaky dryness. The lasting finish is full and sweet as honey, concluding an exceptional experience.

“Bourbon enthusiasts know that there is no experience quite like tasting a whiskey in its truest, untouched form – straight from the barrel,” remarked Buffalo Trace Distillery Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley. “Barrel Proof Rye takes the beloved recipe of Colonel E.H. Taylor Straight Rye Whiskey to a new level and brings a new release that perfectly complements the E.H. Taylor, Jr. Collection.”

The Barrel Proof Rye Bourbon Whiskey is the 13th release to join the Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Collection. Others include Single Barrel Bourbon, Sour Mash Bourbon, Warehouse C Tornado Surviving Bourbon, Four Grain Bourbon, and more. Consistent with previous releases in the collection, the whiskey is stored in the well-recognized E.H. Taylor Jr. canister, which showcases a vintage label.

Colonel E. H. Taylor, Jr. Barrel Proof Rye Bourbon Whiskey is available now, though quantities are limited. The suggested retail price is $77.99 (750ml); state taxes and fees will vary by market.
