Speyburn Celebrates Successful Scheme to Conserve Local Wildlife

Speyburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky is celebrating the completion of a sustainable environmental project to increase fish populations in the Mackalea Burn, close to its distillery in Speyside.  The installation of a new fish pass, sponsored by the award-winning whisky, will overcome in-river obstacles that prevent salmon and sea trout from spawning, helping to improve the biodiversity of the area.

The scheme was led by Scottish charity the Spey Foundation, in collaboration with Moray Council and Speyburn, as part of the whisky’s two year partnership with the Spey Foundation to support ongoing conservation work along the River Spey. It forms part of the Foundation’s wider initiative to ‘open up Spey burns to wildlife’ and protect and restore the catchment’s natural features.

The Mackalea Burn is a tributary of the River Fiddich, one of the most productive spawning and nursery streams in the Spey catchment. A man-made obstacle, in this case road culverts and steps, had rendered the burn impassable to salmon and sea trout, preventing them from reaching their breeding ground.

The pass, which was created by removing a notch from the step and installing a sustainable timber chute, has allowed fish to journey to and from their breeding grounds more freely. Its design will also improve their habitat by creating depth and slower river flow, opening up an additional 1.5km of high quality breeding grounds to encourage spawning under all flow conditions.

Brian Shaw, a Spey Foundation Biologist commented: ‘The Mackalea Burn project was a great team effort between the Spey Foundation, Speyburn and Moray Council. These sustainable modifications have already allowed sea trout and salmon to swim up the Mackalea Burn, a nice spawning burn, and will continue to do so for years to come.’

The Spey Foundation plays a vital role in conserving the Spey burns and surrounding wildlife and it is this commitment that makes them the perfect partner for Speyburn, which is proud to be the only distillery to use water from the Granty Burn, a tributary of the River Spey, famed for its purity and world class salmon fishing.

Speyburn Single Malt donates £1 to the charity for each new person signing up to Clan Speyburn – the brand’s free online community – with further support provided through an international on-pack promotion.

Mark Steven, Speyburn’s Brand Manager added: ‘The River Spey is at the heart of our whisky, the local community and its wildlife, so it has been wonderful to partner with a charity which shares our commitment to its conservation. The Mackalea Burn project will make a really positive and long term impact on the river’s ecological status and we are very proud to have been involved in the collaboration. To further our commitment to the River Spey’s  enhancement, we are now working with the Spey Foundation to develop another fish pass on the Granty Burn at our distillery, due for completion in 2015.’

Nestled in a valley in the northern edge of Rothes, Speyburn Distillery perfectly balances modern progress with time-honoured distillation and production techniques. In addition to using the most up-to-date and energy efficient equipment, the distillery has retained many of its original features to maintain its unique character, such as its pagoda ventilator roof, wooden wash backs, unique stills, worm tubs and traditional dunnage warehouses.

Notes

Speyburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky was first distilled on December 15, 1897, the diamond jubilee year of Queen Victoria. Today, Speyburn continues to use the time-honoured traditional distillation methods that created the single barrel of the 1897 vintage. Speyburn is matured in American and Spanish oak casks in traditional stone-built warehouses. The result is a classic Speyside single malt; golden amber in colour with a sweet and citrus nose. It is medium-bodied and easy to drink, with a soft, fruity character and a dry, complex finish. The portfolio includes Speyburn Bradan Orach, Speyburn 10 year old and Speyburn 25 year old expressions.

The Spey Foundation is a charitable Company Limited by Guarantee and is a transition of the Spey Research Trust, which was formed in the mid-1970s and since 1981 operated as a Registered Charity, administered by a Research Committee. The aim of the Spey Foundation is to advance the study of and research into salmon and all other aquatic species within the Spey Fishery. The Foundation’s work, like the Trust’s before it, plays a vital part in informing and advising the Spey Fishery Board of developments within the river and helps to determine the Board’s approach to fishery management.

The ‘Opening Up Spey Burns to Wildlife’ project will focus on overcoming in-river obstacles and improvements to the habitat within the Spey catchment, by protecting and restoring the natural features. Damage to these natural features is often caused by diffuse pollution and sediment deposition through bank erosion.  The restoration may involve fencing off areas which have been damaged by livestock, planting trees to create pockets of shade, re-instating gravel beds, moving rocks or introducing wood structures to restore the morphology and to re-establish a natural habitat area for fish to spawn and for other wildlife.  The overall effect of these works will help to improve the biodiversity of the area and the river bank.

BALLANTINE’S LAUNCHES
INNOVATIVE NEW DIGITAL CAMPAIGN
FOR WHISKY DRINKERS
See how the world is drinking whisky at Ballantineslive.com

Ballantine’s, the No.1 whisky in Europe, has launched ‘Ballantine’s Live’: a unique social experiment that explores how the world is drinking whisky through the data generated on social media platforms. The campaign seeks to engage with fans of Ballantine’s Finest, driving awareness and education of Ballantine’s 12 Year Old, and encouraging trial of the super-premium spirit.

Using the data generated by hashtags, images, filters, time of day and locations used by fans to share their whisky occasions online, Ballantine’s will be able to then define whether the posts are typical of either a Ballantine’s Finest or 12 Year Old occasion. This information will then be published on Ballantineslive.com, which will feature the most talked about Finest and 12 Year Old occasions on Twitter, the most ‘checked-in’ bars where people are enjoying their Ballantine’s via Foursquare, and the most popular filters used on Instagram for people sharing their Ballantine’s consumption moment.

Peter Moore, Ballantine’s Global Brand Director, comments: “We are excited to launch a new and innovative campaign that will educate Ballantine’s Finest drinkers about the qualities of our 12 Year Old expression in a way that is both interesting and engaging. Ballantineslive.com will explore how internet users are drinking whisky in real time, while inspiring young adults to embark on an explorative journey of our award-winning Ballantine’s range.”
2014 has marked a strong period of successful and innovative initiatives for Ballantine’s, which has seen the brand launch its ground-breaking online Ballantine’s Golf Club, partner with popular music channel Boiler Room, challenge entrepreneurial bartenders to present their own vision for a dream bar and generate global support for the creation of the world’s first whisky emoji.

Annandale Distillery Reborn – Scotch Whisky News

AA Annadale

History in the Making at Annandale Distillery
Annandale’s Sleeping Beauty Awakens

There was a milestone moment at Annandale Distillery as the first cask was filled at the re-awakened distillery on the outskirts of Annan. This was the first cask to be filled at the old Johnnie Walker distillery in nearly 100 years.

Annandale Distillery opened in 1836 by George Donald, a former excise officer based in Annan. The distillery lease was then taken over by John Sykes Gardner, the son of a formed major of Liverpool in 1883 and then by John Walker and Sons in 1893. John Walker & Sons closed the distillery in 1921 when it was sold to a local farmer. Prof David Thomson and Teresa Church bought the old distillery building in 2007 and started a 7 years project to bring distillation back to this part in Scotland.

On Saturday 15th on November as well as filling the first cask, they opened the doors to visitors from the local area. “We think we got around 750 to 800 people through on Saturday, which is a lot more than we expected. It was a great opportunity for us to meet people from the local area which have supported the restoration of this wonderful distillery.”

Annandale Distillery also has a fully functioning coffee shop and retail outlet, and with the natural beauty of its surroundings makes it a must visit for all whisky fans and visitors alike.
You can now follow Annandale Distillery on Facebook.

Amr ZedanAbout Sentebale • HIV is the second cause of death amongst adolescents aged 10 – 19 globally and is the number one cause of death in Africa. This is a generation that urgently needs help, for their future and the future prosperity of Africa. In Lesotho, one in three children are orphans and there are believed to be over 40,000 adolescents living with HIV.
• Sentebale, co-founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso in 2006, provides healthcare and education to vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty in Lesotho, southern Africa.
• Sentebale’s flagship programme is the Mamohato Programme, which was developed in response to a serious gap in HIV/AIDS education provision for young people in Lesotho.  A study by Sentebale showed that HIV-positive children were isolated and received little support in their homes and communities in relation to the social and psychological challenges they faced; stigma deemed to be the greatest hurdle for these children. The programme offers a residential weeklong camp and follow up monthly clubs that empowers these children to address the stigma and health issues surrounding them enabling them to live a healthy and fulfilled lives.
• In 2010 the Mamohato programme was highlighted as a model of international best practice by the United Nations. The programme was quoted as being “effective, having ethical soundness, cost effective, relevant, innovative and sustainable.”
• Sentebale’s strategy is to provide support to these children and young people, and reach many more children over the coming years. The Mamohato Children’s centre, due to be completed in next year, is the embodiment of that scale up in Lesotho and the platform for expansion into other affected southern African countries.
• Sentebale, means ‘forget me not’ in Sesotho, was set up in memory of the princes’ mothers and as a reminder not to forget the children of Lesotho.
• Lesotho’s main operations are based in Lesotho with the fundraising and management team based in London, headed up by Chief Executive, Cathy Ferrier. Both Princes remain active patrons of Sentebale.Twitter: @Sentebale

‘IT ALL COMES BACK TO THE ORIGINAL’ The Glenlivet Launches New Global Communications Campaign – Scotch Whisky News

‘IT ALL COMES BACK TO THE ORIGINAL’

The Glenlivet launches new global communications campaign

The Glenlivet, the single malt that started it all, has announced the launch of its new global communications campaign: ‘It All Comes Back To The Original’.

The campaign, which is rolling out around the world now, aims to capture and celebrate The Glenlivet’s spirit of originality, communicating its role as a single malt with a style to which others can only aspire and encouraging the same originality from its fans.

Developed to engage directly with discerning men in emerging, developing and mature malt markets, the campaign assets include a film for TV and online usage, print, out of home and digital banners. Following a successful launch in the US last month [October], spearheaded by the TV Commercial, the campaign is now rolling out globally.

The creative features inspiring words that relate to The Glenlivet’s reputation for setting the quality, craft and style benchmarks of the Speyside region. These words are presented in a bold, confident style and, in each creative, a word with the opposite meaning is then further shown as a shadowed reflection.

Furthermore, the look and feel of the headline words in the print, out of home and banner advertisements are inspired by authentic distillery materials such as copper, oak and steel.

The campaign film is shot with a balance of tradition and heritage with contemporary imagery, and depicts the comparative sets of words against the renowned Speyside landscape and the bustling distillery during the production process, reinforcing the premium and craft credentials of the range.

Nikki Burgess, Global Brand Director for The Glenlivet, commented: “2014 has been a landmark year for The Glenlivet – a result of consistent innovation, the buoyant global malt market and our on-going commitment to setting the quality benchmark for Speyside.

“We expect the market’s dynamism to remain and, with this new global advertising campaign, we are confident that we will engage and inspire consumers with the core values of The Glenlivet. In speaking directly to discerning men and conveying The Glenlivet’s crafted quality and originality, we hope to engage with them as they seek to be originals in their own lives too.”

Buffalo Trace Distillery Receives Three Huge

International Awards for 2014

Named Distiller of the Year, and Holds Two of the Three Best Whiskeys in the World

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (Nov. 20, 2014) Buffalo Trace Distillery received an early holiday gift this year, receiving three of the spirits industry’s most coveted awards – “Distiller of the Year,” and Second and Third Finest Whiskies in the World for its William Larue Weller Bourbon and Sazerac 18 Year Old Rye Whiskey.

The International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) named Sazerac Company, Buffalo Trace’s parent company, “Distiller of the Year” in London last week at its annual awards. And earlier this month, Jim Murray named William Larue Weller Bourbon the “Second Finest Whisky in the World” and Sazerac Rye 18 Year Old the “Third Finest Whisky in the World” in his 2015 Whisky Bible. Both the William Larue Weller and the Sazerac Rye 18 year old are produced, aged, and bottled at Buffalo Trace Distillery.

The IWSC was established in 1969 and was the first competition of its kind to reward the world’s best wines, spirits and liqueurs. Entries are received from around 90 countries.

Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible awards are based on evaluation of more than 4,700 whiskies.  In describing the William Larue Weller, Mr. Murray notes, “almost too profound for words… I always save this as one of the last whiskeys I taste for each Bible. In life you always need something to look forward to.”

“We are very fortunate to have received such high honors on such a large stage,” said Harlen Wheatley, master distiller. “To be up against so many competitors and to do so well is something in which we can all be proud.”

The Hermitage Wood Finish was matured in first fill bourbon casks before being finished for 27 months in hand-selected Hermitage wine casks from the northern Rhône region of France.

The Château Cissac Wood Finish was also matured in first fill bourbon casks prior to being finished for 20 months, again in hand-selected wine casks, this time from the Haut-Médoc near Bordeaux in south-western France.

The wood finishes join a stable of classic whiskies with a pre-1960s Speyside character, led by the flagship Benromach 10 Years Old.

Each is hand-crafted by just three distillers using the finest natural ingredients at the Forres distillery.

Ewen Mackintosh, Chief Operating Officer of Gordon & MacPhail which owns the Benromach Distllery Company Ltd, said: “We are proud of our role as custodians of the old crafts of distillation and maturation and as those who are familiar with Benromach know, we like to experiment a little.

“These two wood finishes – Hermitage and Château Cissac – have been finished in casks from two distinguished French wine regions and have a lot of character, which we expect will appeal to both existing and new customers.”

Benromach Hermitage Wood Finish and Benromach Château Cissac Wood Finish will adopt the same new look as that for the 10 Years Old, which was unveiled in April this year.

The new bottle style and packaging reflects the hand-crafted character of the Benromach whiskies.

The elegant bottle’s neck and shoulder resembles the shape of the Benromach stills while the box, complete with embossed hand-drawn lettering, replicates their colour.

A limited release of approximately 4,200 bottles of each product will be available.

The UK recommended retail price for the Benromach Wood Finishes is £39.75. Prices may vary in export markets because of duty and import taxes.

Notes

Leading malt whisky specialist Gordon & MacPhail is the owner of the Benromach Distillery Company Ltd. Established in 1898, the distillery was virtually derelict when the family-owned company bought it in 1993.

Following a painstaking restoration and re-equipment, it was re-opened by HRH Prince Charles in 1998.

In reopening Benromach Distillery, Gordon & MacPhail decided to recreate a classic Speyside single malt – a style that draws its influence from pre-1960s Speyside whiskies.

Benromach Distillery is located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres. A four star visitor centre is open to the public throughout the year for tours and tastings. Benromach Distillery is a member of the world famous Malt Whisky Trail.

Benromach 10 Years Old

Benromach 10 Years Old is created from the finest Scottish barley and pure spring water from the nearby Romach hills. After being matured for at least 10 years, it emerges golden in colour and displays rich fruit, sweet chocolate and delicate spicy aromas. With a rich sherry influence, the mouth-watering palate coats the senses with exotic fruit flavours, toasted malt and a delicate hint of smoke.

GLENDRONACH LAUNCHES NEW 12 YEARS OLD SAUTERNES CASK FINISH

AWARD-WINNING GlenDronach has today (26 November) launched its new 12 years old Sauternes Cask Finish single malt Scotch whisky.

It replaces the acclaimed 14 year-old Sauternes wood finish expression, launched four years ago, which has now been discontinued.

Bottled at 46% vol, without colouring or chill filtering, the 12 year-old Highland malt was initially matured in European oak and then finished in a small batch of Sauternes wine casks.

Sauternes is a sweet dessert wine made in the French region of Bordeaux, an area famous for its wine-growing. The aim of finishing the GlenDronach single malt in the wine casks is to create an extraordinarily refreshing single malt – delicate and sweet with a balanced acidity and fruity complexity.

Master Distiller Billy Walker’s tasting notes:

Appearance: Crisp summer gold.

Nose: Torrents of fresh fruits, apricots and nectarine flow to honeydew melon and distant hints of overripe banana. A gentle aromatic floral note balances with creamy vanilla to give a sophisticated back note to the nose.

Palate: Wildflower honey floods over sweet sultanas and green apples. A dusting of ground almonds, vanilla and creamy toasted oak combines with a vibrant citrus twist, giving a rich, spicy depth and contrasting fresh balance.

Finish: Sweet, fresh and fragrant with balanced acidity. Lots of finesse and elegance, whilst still maintaining the lively youthful elements.

The GlenDronach 12 Years Old Sauternes Wood Finish is available from today.

Wonderfully warming in the mouth. Rich in sherry characters with raisins and plum. Vanilla is prominent in long, well sustained finish. Delightful.”
