Buffalo Trace Distillery Releases Fifteenth Round of

Single Oak Project Bourbon

Second to last release in the series looks at the top and the bottom of the tree cut while Master Distiller explains differences

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (Nov. 18, 2014) – Buffalo Trace Distillery is nearing the end of its Single Oak Project, with just one more bourbon release to go after this, in what will be a four year study of seven different variables and how they affect taste.

This release features bourbons which were all aged in barrels with the same entry proof (105), same stave seasoning, aged in the same warehouse (concrete floor), and same char level (number three). All other variables, recipe (wheat or rye), grain size, and tree cut (top or bottom of the tree) vary.

“There are many variables to consider in this project but one of the most interesting to learn more about has been tree cut,” said Harlen Wheatley, master distiller. “There are four direct components that are related to wood that contribute to our bourbon flavor; hemicellulose, lignin, tannins, and the char layer. There are two major considerations when it comes to tree composition and location, and those are lignins and tannins. The top half of the tree tends to have more lignin, which contributes to the formulation of vanilla and vanilla flavor. The bottom half of the tree tends to have more tannins, which contributes to the formation of ellagic acids and tannic flavor. Tannic flavor leaves your mouth dry and delivers complexity or richness in texture.”

If past online votes are any indication, fans are all over the board when it comes to their favorite. Barrel # 82 retains its lead, but the other barrels in the top spots vary in char level, tree location, recipe and char level. The only thing it seems fans can agree upon at this time is the entry proof (105) and warehouse (rick warehouse.)

But it’s not too late to get in on the act and start reviewing, as there are no clear cut winners yet, and another release after this one to go before this project ends in the summer of 2015.  More than 4,300 reviews have been given so far on www.singleoakproject.com.

The Single Oak Project is part of an intensive research project Buffalo Trace Distillery started conducting in 1999 by hand picking 96 trees with different wood grains and then dividing them into a top and bottom piece, yielding 192 unique sections. From there, staves were created from each section and were air dried for either 6 months or 12 months. After all the staves were air dried, a single barrel was created from each tree section, resulting in 192 total barrels. These barrels were given either a number three or a number four char and then filled with either wheat or rye recipe bourbon.

To further the variety of experiments, the barrels were filled at two different proofs, 105 and 125 proof.  And if this wasn’t enough, two completely different warehouses were used, one with wooden floors and one with concrete floors.  In total, seven different variables were employed in Buffalo Trace’s ultimate experiment.

For eight years the Distillery continued with its tracking process, creating intricate databases and coming up with a potential of 1,396 tasting combinations from these 192 barrels!

The Single Oak Project Bourbon is being released in a series every three months from 2011 through 2015 until all of the 192 barrels have been released. The first release hit select stores in 2011.  This fifteenth release will reach stores in December. Like all the other releases, the quantities are very limited. Every case will contain 12 bottles, each from a different barrel. The fifteenth release is made up of barrel numbers 21, 22, 53, 54, 85, 86, 117, 118, 149, 150, 181, and 182. All releases will be packaged in a 375ml bottle. Suggested retail pricing per bottle is $46.35.

At the conclusion of the Single Oak Project, the Distillery plans to take the top rated Single Oak Project Bourbon and make more just like it, under the Single Oak name.

Royal Salute, the world’s only exclusively prestige Scotch whisky has unveiled a contemporary new look for its 21 Year Old expression reinforcing its position as a modern, luxury product of hand crafted quality.

Royal Salute proudly seeks out the most precious materials to craft its blend – from perfectly matured single malt whiskies to the porcelain flagons in which it is presented. Robust, durable and strong, the opaque body of the flagon acts as a powerful guardian to the precious liquid. Crafted over five days from Cornish clay in Great Britain, Royal Salute’s high quality is further reinforced by the new artistic decoration on its cap that includes a guilloché pattern, while the label emphasises the brand’s legacy, which dates back to 1953 when Royal Salute was launched in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on the day of her coronation.

Elaborate engraving of a lion and cannon smoke on the bottle retain Royal Salute’s rich heritage as a powerful and sophisticated prestige Scotch whisky, with the expression being named after the traditional 21 Gun Salute. In 2012, the brand became the first ever to be officially associated with the Royal Gun Salutes at the Tower of London, further celebrating the brand’s celebration of royalty, a tradition that continues today.

Royal Salute 21 Year Old’s new bottle reflects the power and grace of Master Distiller Colin Scott’s craftsmanship. Marcel Siem Shows Skill and Nerve to Win the Ballantine’s Sponsored BMW Masters 2014

Marcel Siem left a huge impression on the crowd at Lake Malaren Golf Club in Shanghai yesterday [2nd November], winning the world-class BMW Masters golf tournament – a prestigious European Tour event also sponsored by Ballantine’s, the world No. 2 Scotch whisky – with true flair and style after a thrilling play-off.

The final day saw an enthralling climax to the competition as four players battled it out in the final few holes. The Tournament went to a play-off between France’s Alexander Levy, England’s Ross Fisher and the ultimate winner, Germany’s Marcel Siem.

Siem held his nerve to stay true to his game in the play-off, chipping in beautifully from 20 yards to Birdie the play-off hole. He then watched on in a dramatic ending, seeing Levy and Fisher unable to hole their Birdie attempts to take the match to another play-off hole.  Siem was victorious after an incredible four day’s golf at the challenging Lake Malaren golf course.

Siem commented: “This is a great tournament to win and I had an amazing day today. I did feel very nervous in the play-off but kept believing and managed to pull it off. So many people have supported me in my career but I would like to thank my family most for helping me become the golfer I am today.”

The dramatic tournament ended after an exciting week for Ballantine’s, following the brand’s earlier announcement of the official launch of the Ballantine’s Golf Club; a new online member’s golf club captained by world-leading golfer and Ryder Cup hero, Ian Poulter.

The Ballantine’s Golf Club is an online Members’ Club that is inspired by golf and its lifestyle, and is open to people around the world who share an appreciation of golf and a love of great whisky. Members can also watch an inspiring film that tells Ian Poulter’s own ‘Moment of Truth’ story, detailing how he stayed true to his ambitions of becoming a professional golfer after numerous failed attempts. ‘Moment of Truth’ stories were further recreated by Ballantine’s at the BMW Masters earlier in the week, when some of the world’s best golfers, including Jamie Donaldson, Liang Wen-Chong and Richie Ramsay, signed a camera with their own personal ‘Moment of Truth’ – the defining moment in their golfing career to date – with these poignant messages captured as iconic images.

Peter Moore, Global Brand Director of Ballantine’s, commented: “The BMW Masters is always a fantastic tournament, attracting the world’s greatest golfers, so it has been an honour for Ballantine’s to be part of such a first-class event for the last three years. Andy Watts Business Man of the Year – South African Whisky News

Andy Watts Business Man 02

Making history yet again, Andy Watts, master distiller and a resident of Wellington, has been named Wellington’s Business Man of the Year, only two weeks after receiving the town’s recognition and being named Wellingtonian of the Year. It is the first time in the 30-year history of the two awards that the same person has received both in the same year.

Watts received the award from the Wellington Business Chamber who recognises and rewards individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Wellington business community.

As master distiller of the foremost whisky distillery in Africa, Watts has pioneered whisky-making in this country and in doing so has promoted the town throughout the world with the many awards and accolades the distillery and the whiskies made there (Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky and Three Ships) have garnered over the years.

“When I came to Wellington as a 21-year-old, I couldn’t have dreamt that I would make this town my home and build a career here. But for the past 30 years I have been fortunate to play a part in promoting the prosperity of the town. It certainly isn’t the same town nor is the distillery the same as it was back then. Since 1994 I have shared the vision of architect Chris de Hart to turn the distillery into the beautiful landmark it is today. We have also introduced technology that allows us to compete against the very best in the world and increased our capacity to meet the growing demand for the whiskies we produce.

“Our successes certainly didn’t come easily or without challenges. But we never compromised on our vision for the distillery nor the important role it plays in the town and to its people. Being involved in and marketing our town through our whisky is something I do with pride.”

Born in Barnsley in England, Watts came to South Africa as a professional cricketer in 1982 and while playing cricket for Boland and coaching the Hugenote Primary and High School teams, he met his future wife and decided to make Wellington his home. He not only had to get to know a new country and culture but quickly had to learn to speak Afrikaans. He found a position at the then Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery in Paarl and in 1991 was transferred to The James Sedgwick Distillery as manager. An intensive sixth-month training programme at Morrison Bowmore Distillers in Scotland  led to Watts returning to South Africa and becoming the country’s first master distiller.

Mario Testino, the world’s most iconic fashion photographer, unveiled as The Macallan Master of Photography – Scotch Whisky News

Masters of Photography Mario Testino Edition

Mario Testino, the world’s most iconic fashion photographer, unveiled as The Macallan Master of Photography

The Macallan, the ultimate luxury spirit distributed by Maxxium UK, has revealed Mario Testino as its fifth Master of Photography. Launching today (12 November) in the UK, The Macallan brings to life its foundation stones, The Six Pillars, through the eyes of the world’s most prolific portrait and fashion photographer. The Masters of Photography: Mario Testino Edition sees him interpret The Six Pillars through the characterisation of six individual personalities in his distinct, inimitable and luxurious style.

The Masters of Photography: Mario Testino Edition is The Macallan’s most inspired to date, with the whisky bringing together six different casks to showcase the ultimate complexity. Each of these six perfect whiskies is the definitive representation of one of the Six Pillars.  They each have their own definitive character, flavour and aroma which when brought together; create the perfect single malt with unparalleled depth, darkness and diversity.

The Master Whisky Maker personally selected these six unique casks from over 200,000 maturing at The Macallan distillery to craft this limited edition expression.  He has achieved this through adding layer upon layer of character and flavour, reflecting the approach taken to the photography itself.

Presenting the first ever Masters of Photography design collaboration, each of the 1,000 Mario Testino Editions for sale globally – of which there are four different variations, each featuring one of the four iconic shots taken by Mario – are presented in a beautiful, high gloss, black lacquered presentation box, designed together with Mario Testino. Inspired by the subtle elegance and rich Asian cultural heritage of traditional lacquered boxes, each presentation box is individually numbered and features a secret hidden compartment.

Testino’s ability to transform reality into the more vivid and desirable has resulted in some of the most prolific and recognisable photographs of our time, including the iconic portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales for her Vanity Fair cover story in 1997, and intimate shots of original supermodel Kate Moss spanning several decades.

Renowned for his mastery of composition – the artistic arrangement and placement of visual elements within the picture – and for creating a reflective and intense connection with his sitters, be it celebrities or royalty, Mario Testino has now turned his lens to The Macallan. By bringing together a group of distinct characters, Mario captured the spirit of the ultimate party.  Each character was cast on the basis of their visual qualities, each echoing one of The Macallan’s Six Pillars.  Shot in Beijing, in a former palace near the Forbidden City and Tian’anmen Square, the photographs showcase the vibrancy and luxury of The Macallan world, infused with subtle eclecticism and cultural allusions.

“Whisky was the choice of drink in my country during the years I was growing up. When I was approached by The Macallan to take part in the Masters of Photography Series I decided to capture the moment when people get together to celebrate, in the atmosphere of a whisky environment – a whisky club!,” comments Mario Testino.

Ken Grier, Director of The Macallan, said: “As one of the world’s truly great whiskies, we seek to collaborate with the best photographers in the world. Not just those who have the technical ability, but something more. The Macallan Masters of Photography is about the personal touch, we work with photographers with whom we have a shared passion to create beautiful collectables. Mario’s emotional engagement coupled with the level of his creative involvement, heralds an evolution of the role of the Master in the Masters of Photography series, one which has brought about an exciting visual celebration of our fundamental Six Pillars. Not only is he a historically important giant in contemporary photography, his elegance, charm and gentlemanly approach to creating this ultimate party has made him both a joy and an inspiration to work with.”

About The Macallan

Founded in 1824 in the heart of Speyside, The Macallan was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to be legally licensed. Since then it has built a reputation as one of the world’s leading single malt whiskies.  The creation of The Macallan draws on the vital contributing influences of Spain, North America and Scotland, and of their respective natural raw materials, combined with traditional methods and craftsmanship. The Macallan Masters of Photography: Mario Testino edition

The Macallan Masters of Photography: Mario Testino edition is an exquisite whisky, showcasing ultimate complexity. Bob Dalgarno, The Macallan Master Whisky Maker, has selected six casks every one representing the best example of spirit exemplifying each of the Six Pillars, and combined them to form the most extraordinary and rare Macallan.  He has achieved this through adding layer upon layer of character and flavour, reflecting the approach taken to the photography itself.

Inspired by the chosen setting and approach taken by Testino in casting the characters and capturing them within this dynamic party scene, the Master Whisky Maker selected six casks from over 200,000 casks maturing at The Macallan, each the ultimate representation of one of the Six Pillars. Everyone with its own definitive character, flavour and aroma which when brought together; create an outstanding single malt with unparalleled depth, darkness and diversity.

The six casks, a combination of Spanish and American 100% sherry seasoned oak butt and puncheon casks, result in a truly multi-dimensional flavour experience that once drunk is gone forever.

Six Pillars: six miniatures

Rooted in its Spiritual Home, this single malt is true to itself. Traditional, classy and complex, this whisky at 58.1% ABV embodies The Macallan, like the iconic Easter Elchies House, with sherry driving a distinct character. A strikingly handsome young man visually represents this Pillar with his sophistication and charisma.

Vibrant and copper in colour, this single malt at 56.8% ABV reflects the Curiously Small Stills, a defining feature of The Macallan’s unique character.  This eye-catching whisky promising a long, lingering finish.  A small Chinese Crested Dog, cradled by a classically, alluring woman conveying a timeless elegance, represents this whisky, which is mysterious and intense.

Refined, yet complex this stylish and individual single malt at 58.2% ABV is inspired by the Finest Cut.  Citrus is at the fore, giving a welcome sharpness.  Spirit dominates here but within the classical structure determined by the cask.  The character selection was simple; a sharply-dressed, striking man reflecting a perfectly tailored look, like the cut of a great suit; adding variety to the scene.

The richness of this single malt at 57.4% ABV celebrates the Exceptional Oak CasksThe character is classic Macallan; spice, dried fruit and sweetness.  It is a suave and considered whisky showing maturity at its heart.  The character echoes this Pillar; he is distinguished, mature, full of character and experienced.

Vibrancy and flair are at the heart of this single malt at 56.8% ABV, embodying Natural ColourYet this is a breathtakingly gorgeous whisky with real poise, beauty and subtlety.  A sublime whisky with supermodel charm plays out through the sweet vanilla cream and silk-like texture.  This feminine charm led to the casting of our leading lady who stands out in the crowd, but is not dominant.  Her beauty, smile and energy make her the perfect party companion.

Bottled at 59.2% ABV, this genuinely effortless whisky embodies the Peerless SpiritA single malt capturing the very heart of The Macallan; its character, heritage and story.  It does not need a detailed narrative; it delivers the perfect balance of spirit and cask.  A strong and confident military man is how Testino has interpreted this, the final, of the Six Pillars.  He stands for something authentic; he is passionate and committed.

SCOTTISH LEADER STANDS TALLER, PROUDER – Scotch Whisky News

Scottish Leader Original 750ml LR

SCOTTISH LEADER STANDS TALLER, PROUDER

Scottish Leader, one of the world’s favourite blended Scotch whiskies, sold in 60 countries, is revitalising with a new look, an enhanced recipe and the introduction of an additional, very premium Signature blend.

After 12 months of extensive global consumer research, what is now positioned as the Scottish Leader Original, has been reformulated with improved body and balance. The blend of top malt and grain whiskies is the recipe by Burn Stewart master distiller, Ian MacMillan, and now has a warm, honey sweet and delicately smoky taste with a silky smooth finish. It has also been repackaged to signify the change.

The new, sophisticated Scottish Leader Signature has a more pronounced island malt influence than the Original, with a rich, smoky profile.

Says MacMillan: “The core elements of Scottish Leader Original have not been lost in any way. As a team with over 340 years of collective experience, we’ve worked incredibly hard to give it more richness and balance but ensure it is still immediately recognisable as the Scottish Leader people around the world have come to appreciate. With Scottish Leader Signature we’ve amplified the malt influence to give Scotch lovers a new, complex and layered offering.

“Both will appeal to experienced blended drinkers and newcomers, whether they enjoy drinking Scotch neat or with a mixer.”

SA marketing manager, Taygan Govinden says of the new, refreshed packaging. “Modern, tall and proud, the bottle now has clean-edged glass chamfers skilfully designed to show-case the rich gold colours of the whisky. The Scottish Leader ethos is expressed in the new soaring eagle brand icon, an inherently Scottish symbol, which conveys success, vision and power – the characteristics of a great leader and the essence of the Scottish Leader brand.

“The packaging is also influenced by its proud Scottish heritage. With a Celtic typeface and the landscape of Ben Ledi, the highest mountain in the Trossachs, the label reflects its provenance and Highland home.

“These whiskies were crafted to encourage people to share and celebrate occasions, recognising individual and group successes across all aspects of life.”

Scottish Leader Original, in 1 litre, 750 ml and 200 ml, and Signature in 750 ml packaging, will be available at leading South African liquor outlets from December 2014.
