The French Whiskies Have Arrived in British Columbia! – French Whisky News

AA France

The French whiskies have arrived in British Columbia and are available at private liquor stores in Vancouver area and Victoria Island. To get a list of stores and more details about the whiskies, please contact:

Yannick Treffot [e] yantre@cru-terroir.com • [ph] 778-870-4649.

Currently available:

G.Rozelieures (Lorraine region)

Pro$hibition (Jura region)

Michel Couvreur (Burgundy region)

Guillon (Champagne region)

The award winning distillery from Brittany Glann Ar Mor (Glann Ar Mor and Kornog whiskies) will be added to the portfolio in the next couple of months. Please note that the portfolio will be available in Alberta by the end of this year. Established since 1870 in the Lorraine region, the Grallet Dupic family is locally renowned for their mirabelle plum and pear eaux de vie. Christophe Dupic decided to batch the first-of-its kind Whisky de Lorraine in 2000. The eaux de vie distillation savoir-faire has definitely shaped the identities of their whiskies that are characterized by fruitiness, delicateness, smoothness all along with a touch of masculinity through the use of peat.

pRO$HIBITION

Made in Jura, France

Nestled in the foothills of the rocky spur of the village of Château Châlon, the Tissot family has a long established history of wine makers and roving distillers (Bouilleurs de Cru in French).

Pascal Tissot (11th generation) uses a very unique distillation method of three French 1934 Blavier stills, originally designed and built to distil lavender for the perfume industry. Local ‘Feuillettes’ barrels, which hold 114 litres – half the size of a Burgundian wine barrel, are then filled with the new spirit and matured for a period of three to four years in the rustic Jurassians cellars. The batches are then independently bottled cask by cask. Only 1,000 bottles of each version are produced every year.

AA F5

Vin Jaune Single Cask

41% abv • +856120

Double distilled single malt matured between three to four years in Vin Jaune (Yellow wine) feuillette size barrels.

Vin Jaune, made from Savagnin grapes, is aged for a minimum of 6 years and3 months in oak barrels that have been filled nearly to the top. The wine gradually evaporates, and as it does a thin layer of yeast called voile forms on its surface, allowing complex, nutty flavors to develop. It is very similar to a dry fino Sherry.

AA F6

Vin de Paille Single Cask

41% abv • +453605

Double distilled single malt matured between three to four years  in  Vin de Paille (straw wine) feuillette size barrels. Vin de Paille is made from grapes that have been dried to concentrate their juice (the result is similar to the ice wine process.)

AA F7

Macvin Single Cask

41% abv • +70664

Double distilled single malt matured between three to four years in Macvin feuillette size barrels. Macvin is a late  harvested  grape must that is aged in oak barrels for a minimum of 12 months without prior alcoholic fermentation in tanks. Marc du Jura, pomace-based brandie, is then added at a ratio of 1 litre for every 2 of must. Fermentation stops, leaving behind residual sugar and a sweet complex dessert wine.

Michel Couvreur

Burgundy

AA F8

Hand-crafted boutique whisky company that sources its raw whiskies from various distilleries in Scotland, then ages them in their Burgundian underground cellars. Yearly production is about 50,000 allocated bottles. Of Belgium origin, Burgundian wine merchant, Michel Couvreur, arrived in Scotland in 1964. He got involved in the Scotch business and became known for selecting the most ancient strains of cereals andusing extremely rare Sherry casks for aging. In the 70’s, Michel Couvreur returned to Burgundy where he now matures his Scotches in rare Pedro Ximenez and/or Palomino casks to craft exceptional whiskies.

Founded in 1997 in the Champagne region of France, Guillon offers a range of single malt whiskies matured in various cask types selected from famous French vineyards. The barley is sourced locally from a Champagne cooperative. During the fermentation process, Guillon uses champagne yeast (saccharomyces bayanus), which give a more regional character to their products. Double distilled, all the whiskies are then aged for a minimum of five years in white Burgundy wine barrels before being finished in various wine barrels for various length of time. Guillon is the official supplier of L’Élysée (the Residence of the President of France).

Buck’s Fizz and Gewurtztraminer

Speyside, Spey

The nose (after a somewhat inauspicious, solventy start) eventually settled down to honey and fruit (red grapes, peach brandy, pear-drops, kiwi, apple strudel, Buck’s fizz). With water we detected summer pudding, Juicy Fruit chewing gum, pink grapefruit and Gewürztraminer, with slowly emerging hints of menthol and tobacco. The palate suggested fizzy chews, pear and ‘petrol-flavoured bubble-gum’ (according to one panellist) – generally bright and tongue-coating with waxy green leaf and warm spices of nutmeg and clove to finish. It really came together with water – key lime pie, peppered fruits – a mouth-flooding mix of juicy sweetness and citrus (with gentle spice to finish).

Drinking tip: This is a dram that improves considerably with a little water and a bit of time. Could liven up jaded senses or taste-buds.

Liquid hedonism

Speyside, Spey

On the nose, golden syrup sponge, peach cobbler and treacle tart were placed on a French polished mahogany table. There were also red velvet cupcakes and a heady plum liqueur. “Everything I look for in a dram!” said one Panellist. An intensely deep and rich experience, with Jamaica cake, baked apples and peaches, dark chocolate, honey and vanilla to taste. The mouth-feel was extraordinarily silky in texture as tropical, mango juices abound in the finish. Water brought sweet ginger, eucalyptus and start anise. One Panellist enjoyed candied fennel seeds whilst strolling through a fragrant and exotic spice market.

Drinking tip: Enjoy at full strength for the ultimate experience

Complex and lively

Lowland

This complex, lively dram did not appeal to everyone’s taste. The nose had delightful sweetness (spun sugar, toffee apples, marzipan, Daim bars) and fruitiness in the form of stewed plums and cherry brandy; but we also detected butterfly wing-beats of rubber, dried flowers and linseed oil. Water brought out sultana loaf, rum and raisin truffles and Soreen malt loaf. The palate offered Moffat toffees in a tin and candy necklaces, plus deeper notes of leather, rubber, caramelised onions and black pepper. Water softened the palate to Coco Pops and cappuccino with hints of Christmas spice – much more drinkable in reduction.

Drinking tip: A bit of leisurely entertainment after dinner

‘Once you pop …’

Speyside, Lossie

The aromas neat were all very attractive and popular with the panel members; raspberry ripple ice cream, brandy snaps, caramel wafers, Key lime pie, salted toffee sauce and sour pineapple refresher chew bars. The flavours were all very moreish; sweet and salty popcorn, beef noodle cup-a-soup, Maggi liquid seasoning and memories of those sachets containing flavoured powder to sprinkle over your crisps. Water transported us into a trendy hair salon; wet hair, wet towels, bleach, perfumed shampoo and plenty of hairspray serving fresh tangerine juice, Parma Violet Spritz cocktails and Margaritas in a salted rimmed glass with slice of lime.

Drinking tip: Getting ready for a beach party

Colour: Shiny copper

Kissing a smoker

Islay

A damp shed containing oil paints, turpentine and rabbit skin glue soon developed into meaty and peaty notes. There was roast pork, turkey and pheasant on the menu and a Twix to wash it all down. The palate had lots of peat and a caramelised meatiness then lasting cigarette smoke on the finish. It was described as ashy and epic, “Like kissing a smoker” one panellist said. The nose with water took us back to the shed in oily overalls for some putty and linseed oil. Then the meaty notes returned – Chinese suckling pig and duck in hoisin sauce. Honey glazed gammon with rosemary and thyme on the palate and plenty of smoke to finish.

Drinking tip: For chilling out with a Simon and Garfunkel CD

Colour: Faded Roman gold

Cask: Refill barrel

Milroys of Soho “Rise of the Independents – New Indie Bottlings” – Scotch Whisky News

Print

Having recently seceded from a larger group and declaring ourselves independent in a grand ceremony involving a lot of flag waving, cheering and the blaring of a thousand vuvuzelas, we were then left with the not so small task of trying to redefine what Milroy’s was, is and soon to be.

After a lot of soul-searching and mad ideas (a whisky and hammock bar anyone?) we decided to align ourselves with other independent whisky companies. As such we have been scouring the world for the best independent bottlings we can find using a set criteria:-

Step 1 – are the bottlings well reviewed? Although taste is entirely subjective reviewers can give a great insight into the consistency of a bottler’s range.
Step 2 – try the damned stuff! We pride ourselves on hand-selecting all of our stock, everything we sell will have been given the seal of approval by a member of staff.
Step 3 – put our money where our mouth is and buy it!

The result has been fantastic, we are now stocking a host of indie bottlings from Malt’s of Scotland to the Italian firm Samaroli, and from Lady of the Glen to the great Wemyss Malts! We will of course strive to source more independent bottlings, we collect them like Lannisters collect Stark heads! Beneath is a selection of some of our current favourites.

AA milroys 1

Lady of the Glen Bowmore 21 Year Old – 50% – £299.95

One of only ten bottles, this heavily sherry cask influenced Bowmore was bottled in 2012 and swiftly sold out everywhere, just one bottle available!

Aa milroys 2

Highland Laird Arran 17 Year Old – 50% – £69.95

An ex-Bourbon cask matured 17 year old Arran, typical apples, pears and apricot notes. Excellent balance! There’s not been a single bottling from Malts of Scotland that we haven’t enjoyed yet, this is no exception.

AA milroys 3

Adelphi Fascadale 14 Year Old – 46% – £57.95

A Highland Park bottled under Adelphi’s own label. Heathery with pert Bourbon cask notes of vanilla, pear and honey with a pinch of salt. The finish is long with notes of applewood smoke and Scotch tablet.
Adelphi Fascadale 14 Year Old – 46% – £57.95

aa milroys 4

Creative Whisky Tobermory 1994 – 53.8% – £74.95

A Highland Park bottled under Adelphi’s own label. Heathery with pert Bourbon cask notes of vanilla, pear and honey with a pinch of salt. The finish is long with notes of applewood smoke and Scotch tablet.  A big malty Tobermory, free with the toffee, shortbread and sea salt notes! This bottling from David Stirk is adorned by an illustration from a local artist.
