TWB 10th anniversary exclusive #6 and #7

The Whisky Barrel releases their latest exclusive 10th Anniversary Whiskies!

Specialist online whisky shop, TheWhiskyBarrel.com, is proud to release Dumbarton 30 Year Old 1987 Sovereign and Carsebridge 44 Year Old 1973 Sovereign 10th Anniversary bottlings.

These are the sixth and seventh additions to The Whisky Barrel’s range of exclusive bottlings commemorating the 10th anniversary of the retailer established in 2007 and which is now renowned as one of the world’s leading whisky and spirits merchants.

The Dumbarton 30 Year Old 1987 Sovereign

The Dumbarton 30 Year Old 1987 Sovereign was distilled at the now lost Dumbarton Distillery in the Lowland region of Scotland and bottled by Hunter Laing & Company Ltd exclusively for The Whisky Barrel. Aged for 30 years in cask refill #HL14247 yielding 160 bottles at natural cask strength.

Dumbarton Distillery was a single grain distillery built in Dumbartonshire in the 1930s, at which time it was the largest in Scotland. Dumbarton closed in 2002 and has since been demolished, making The Whisky Barrel’s exclusive Dumbarton 30 Year Old 1987 Sovereign a very special addition to any collection.

The Carsebridge 44 Year Old 1973 Sovereign

The Carsebridge 44 Year Old 1973 Sovereign was distilled at the now lost Carsebridge Distillery in Alloa and bottled by Hunter Laing & Company Ltd exclusively for The Whisky Barrel. Aged for 44 years in refill hogshead cask #HL14189 yielding 150 bottles at natural cask strength.

Carsebridge distillery dates to 1798, making malt whisky at first before moving to grain whisky production in 1850. The distillery was destroyed by fire in 1902 but underwent a major re-development and was doing well again by 1927. By 1980 Carsebridge was the largest grain distillery in Scotland but it closed in 1983 and was the demolished in 1992. All that is left of the distillery are very few casks in warehouses across Scotland which makes the Carsebridge 44 Year Old 1973 Sovereign a rare and special find for cognisors and collectors alike.

Both notable bottlings are available exclusively from The Whisky Barrel, shipping to customers Worldwide including the United States of America, Canada and Japan.

DISCOVER A NEW TRILOGY OF LUXURY WHISKIES CRAFTED AT THE HOME OF THE WORLD’S OLDEST SCOTCH MATURATION WAREHOUSE – Scotch Whisky News

Bowmore

DISCOVER A NEW TRILOGY OF LUXURY WHISKIES CRAFTED AT THE HOME OF THE WORLD’S OLDEST SCOTCH MATURATION WAREHOUSE

Introducing the Vintner’s trilogy from bowmore islay single malt scotch whisky,

a unique collection of luxury whiskies matured in wine casks

Bowmore® Islay Single Malt Whisky has announced the launch of the Bowmore® Vintner’s Trilogy. Launching from September, the trilogy will feature a collection of exceptional single malt whiskies; Bowmore® 18 Year Old Double Matured Manzanilla, Bowmore® 26 Year Old Wine Matured and a final 27 Year Old bottling to be released in 2018. The trilogy has been created in the Hidden Depths of Bowmore®’s No.1 Vaults, the world’s oldest scotch maturation house, imbuing the signature Bowmore® flavour with attributes of the finest ex-wine, sherry and port casks.

DISCOVER HIDDEN GEMS

Nestled on the edge of the island of Islay, with the tumultuous waves of the Atlantic crashing against the walls of the maturation warehouse, expertly chosen casks transform single malt whisky into Bowmore®’s liquid gold. Within the maturation warehouse lays hidden casks waiting to be discovered as a result of generations of distilling expertise and the unique sea-buffeted atmosphere within the No. 1 Vaults. Bowmore®’s legendary No. 1 Vaults, established in 1779, is the birthplace of coveted whiskies including the latest premium collection that is the Vintner’s Trilogy. Explore the depths of the legendary vaults and discover the hidden casks, matured for 18 years or more, to create the Vintner’s Trilogy. Matured in manzanilla sherry, wine, bourbon and Islay malt barrels, these whiskies boast extra layers of flavour unique to this collection.

Bowmore1

BOWMORE 18 YEAR OLD DOUBLE MATURED MANZANILLA

The first of the Vintner’s Trilogy, Bowmore® 18 Year Old is matured in both ex-bourbon barrels and ex-manzanilla sherry barrels, taking on a rich antique gold colour. On the nose, notes of treacle, salted caramel, ripe blackcurrants, soft stone fruits, vanilla fudge and spiced Seville oranges sit alongside subtle hints of menthol and chamomile. These aromas develop into bitter oranges and a burst of peat smoke on the palate to create this refined whisky. Bowmore®’s 18 Year Old Double Matured Manzanilla will be available from specialist whisky retailers at RRP $127| €110 | £105.

Bowmore2

BOWMORE 26 YEAR OLD WINE MATURED

The second in the trilogy, Bowmore® 26 Year Old Wine Matured spends time in ex-bourbon barrels and wine barriques, developing a burnt amber colour. Redcurrant jam, camphor oil and cherry pie intermingle with earthy smoke on the nose, developing into spiced oak, tropical fruits such as papaya and mango and a honeyed sweetness with the addition of water. A full-bodied whisky, on the palate the flavours develop into oak spiced smoke and rich dark chocolate with a long finish and a hint of salt typical of Bowmore®. Bowmore®’s 26 Year Old Wine Matured will be available from specialist whisky retailers at RRP $540 | €420 | £400.

Bowmore3

BOWMORE 27 YEAR OLD

The final whisky in the trilogy set to be released in 2018, Bowmore® 27 Year Old will complete the collection.

David Turner, Bowmore® distillery manager, comments: “The Vintner’s Trilogy is a collection of three liquid gold whiskies which have been meticulously matured over time in our No.1 Vaults. The unique, sea-buffeted atmosphere inside the oldest scotch maturation warehouse in the world has created three perfectly balanced whiskies full of flavour, with each whisky offering an individual taste journey through their time maturing in manzanilla sherry, wine, bourbon and Islay malt casks.”

Notes:

The Vintner’s Trilogy collection and its name has been inspired by Bowmore®’s use of ex-wine and sherry barrels to create their perfectly balanced whiskies. The trilogy celebrates the distillery’s legendary Scotch maturation warehouse, the No. 1 Vaults, the oldest in the world.

ABOUT BOWMORE®

Founded in 1779, Bowmore® is the oldest distillery on Islay, one of the Scottish isles which make up the region known as the ‘Islands’ in the lexicon of Whisky.  The other regions are the Highlands, Speyside and the Lowlands.  Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore® is no exception; the malt is carefully smoked in a peat-fired kiln, using skills handed down from generation to generation to craft a perfectly balanced Single Malt.

Bowmore®’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of its Single Malts. Today, it prides itself as one of the rare distilleries which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by a traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery.  Water for the whiskies is specially drawn from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones – the same Islay peat that fires the malt-drying kiln.

Bowmore® Distillery’s close proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of its spirit. The legendary Bowmore® No. 1 Vaults is where most of the whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault’s sea-facing wall.

They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, gradually developing rich and mellow flavours.  It is this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore® Single Malt Scotch Whiskies.

1993 Macallan 24 Year Old “Old Particular” Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

What a Difference a Year Makes – Incredible Value Next to Macallan 25

1993 Macallan 24 Year Old “Old Particular” Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky

“Macallan is the only true first growth in today’s single malt market and it’s not often you get a deal on luxury.” – David Driscoll, K&L Assistant Head Buyer

Macallan is the only Scottish single malt distillery that has truly achieved first growth status within the industry, despite the fact that many others have tried. The distillery’s multi-thousand dollar price points are reminiscent of Chateau Lafite (even DRC at times) and rare collections continue to drive the value of the heralded Highland distillery further into the stratosphere. The 18 year old has gone from $80 to $250 in the span of a decade and the 25 year old now sells for a minimum of $1500 a bottle when you can find it. It’s for that reason that, despite the lavish expense, our buyers could not pass up the rarest of all opportunities when it happened upon them: a rare single cask of Macallan 24 year old, bottled at cask strength (no water added), unchillfiltered straight from the barrel for a price that defies the market forces. While normally full proof, single barrel editions sell for a premium compared to the standard editions, our team managed to pull off the deal for a fraction of comparative market prices. Full of vanilla, stone fruit, and classic malt character, this single hogshead edition captures the elegance of the perfectly mature Macallan distillate at an unbridled 51.3% natural cask strength. Bottled exclusively for K&L by our friends at Old Particular, there are only 190 bottles available.

This product is expected to arrive for shipment or pickup by Monday, January 15, 2018.

1993 Macallan 24 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Pre-Arrival) ($599.99)

David Driscoll | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 16, 2017

As K&L’s spirits buyer, I stopped looking for luxury casks years ago. The Port Ellens and Broras of the world are far too expensive at this point to justify the thousand dollar prices and the amount of customers still looking for rare editions of lost distilleries has dwindled, especially for an entire cask’s worth of whisky. That being said, every now and again I can pull a little magic out of my dusty old Scotch hat and find a barrel of something truly stupendous. While $600 for a bottle of Macallan may not seem like a deal to everyone, I would do a price search for the 25 year Macallan as a comparison and see what pops up. You’re looking at a minimum of $1500-$1700 for a single bottle in today’s market and that’s for a blend of numerous barrels proofed down to 43% ABV. Can you imagine what the Mac 25 would cost as a single barrel at full proof? It would be at least $3000 if not more! Even older independent editions like the one we’re offering here sell for a minimum of $750-$1000 overseas. But in the spirit of the holidays, we’re offering a pure, unadulterated cask of 24 year old Macallan from a single barrel at full proof for $599. There’s not much of it. Only enough for 190 lucky people (if everyone only buys one bottle), but like I said before: Macallan is the only true first growth in today’s single malt market and it’s not often you get a deal on luxury. Aged in a refill hogshead barrel, there’s no sherry influence here, just golden grains, soft vanilla, rounded fruits, and classic Macallan elegance. Getting the price down to $599 in today’s competitive market was something of a miracle, but that’s what the holidays are for, right? Those looking for something truly special this holiday season need look no further. We won’t actually receive the bottles until January, so you might have to print out a gift receipt and place it in a card for your loved ones in the meantime, but it doesn’t get more refined than this. This is the Chateau Margaux of single malt whisky casks. If you truly enjoy drinking old Macallan, I have to imagine this is the last time we’ll see anything like this under $1000 at K&L.

One of a Kind Leather Bourbon Bag Created by Jackson Wayne

FRANKLIN, Tennessee – November 3, 2017 – Jackson Wayne Leather Goods has collaborated with the Southern Whiskey Society to create a totally unique product, just in time for the holidays: the Bourbon Bag. This tote is both rugged and refined, designed specifically for connoisseurs of fine whiskey to carry their fine spirits to transport their spirits to tastings, gatherings and other events.

The Bourbon Bag is made with thick vegetable tanned full grain leather, which means that its quality is top of the line and makes a perfect gift for the true (or even wannabe) whiskey aficionado.

“Until now, guys would be carrying around expensive bottles of bourbon in cardboard boxes or their own makeshift bags,” says founder of Jackson Wayne, Andrew Lynch, “But in talking with the guys over at the Southern Whiskey Society, we really felt that fine bourbon deserved to be carried around in fine leather, and some functionality was needed, so we got to work on developing this bag. It was a lot of fun to design.”

The Bourbon Bag, like all Jackson Wayne products, is American made. In addition to heirloom quality leather bags that are built to last, Jackson Wayne also has a direct-to-consumers pricing model allowing consumers to pay for quality instead of markups–making the Bourbon Bag attainable given its level of craftsmanship and quality of materials.

Springbank Society Quarterly Newsletter – Scotch Whisky News

Springbank Society

We hope this quarterly newsletter finds you in rude health.  The clocks have turned back, the nights have drawn in and the last ferry of the season has long since departed here in Campbeltown as we batten down the hatches for what will surely be another wet and wild Kintyre winter. We’ve had an industrious few months here at Springbank so grab yourself a healthy measure of something wet and Springbanky and make yourself comfortable while we bring you up to speed.

Distillery News

Our beloved Springbank distillery is currently undergoing an extensive program of refurbishment works, some of which you may have seen on social media.  These works will ensure we can keep producing our whisky in the manner that is unique to Springbank for many more years to come and also enhance our visitors’ experience. For the cynics amongst you, this is not corporate PR talk for overhauling Springbank into a ‘Disney Distillery’ with VR Malting and conveyor belt tours, but rather includes work such as surfacing the car park and installing drainage so we do not need to provide visitors with welly boots and plans to install an onsite shop to save visitors from the ‘Longrow dash’ to pick up their tour tickets and pay for warehouse bottles from the Cadenhead shop. Recent and ongoing works include;

Malt Barns – Local contractors McFadyens have worked tirelessly over 9 weeks to replace and renew the crumbling concrete floors of our malt barns to ensure we can continue with 100% floor malting for many more years. The Malt Barns which were closed during refurbishment are now open again to tours.

New Boiler – Our trusty distillery boiler, designed by Chairman Mr H G Wright and installed in 1962 was finally retired last month and replaced with a brand new Cochran boiler manufactured in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway.  The old boiler certainly earned its  retirement having being converted from coal, to heavy oil and latterly light oil.  Rest easy  old friend.  We all held our breath as the old 24 ton boiler was delicately manoeuvred by crane out of the boiler house and over the newly refurbished malt barns, but the transition passed seamlessly and Director of Production Findlay Ross can sleep easy once again.

Below we have a picture of the boiler being carried over the malt barns,

Springbank1

Staff Facilities – A swelling work force (not talking about waistlines) means bigger and better staff accommodation is required.  McFadyens are currently renovating the old stable next to warehouse 7 to create a new canteen, changing rooms and showers.

Distillery Shop – Once the new staff facilities are complete the old staff canteen will be turned into a distillery shop where visitors will be able to buy tour tickets and pay for warehouse purchases without the need to do the Longrow dash down to Cadenhead’s.   The Cadenhead shop and tasting room on Union Street/Bolgam Street will continue to run as our flagship store.

Aesthetic improvements – Flagpoles flying the flags of our three malts have been erected on the corner of the recently surfaced car park, which are visible from the distillery lane ensuring visitors from afar can locate us with ease. Once they disembark they will enjoy a walk across the recently surfaced car park to a decorative Springbank cask feature which provides another photo opportunity to remember their pilgrimage down the A83.  Benches and raised flower beds mean visitors can even choose to sit outside in the driving Campbeltown rain while they wait for their tour to start.

Kilkerran Award

We are delighted to announce that the Kilkerran 12yo was the winner of the gold medal in the Scottish Field Whisky Challenge 2017 Grand Final – under £40 category. The Scottish Field Whisky Challenge has been running since 2000 and receives acclaim for its  independent and unbiased award process. The whiskies are nominated by a group of independent retailers before being blind tasted by an industry panel. Fantastic recognition for one of Campbeltown’s finest!

The Whisky Barrel releases their latest exclusive 10th Anniversary Whisky! – Scotch Whisky News

glenlivet-11-year-old-2006-10th-anniversary

The Whisky Barrel releases their latest exclusive 10th Anniversary Whisky!

Specialist online whisky shop, TheWhiskyBarrel.com, is proud to release Glenlivet 11 Year Old 2006 Signatory 10th Anniversary.

This is the fifth addition to The Whisky Barrel’s range of exclusive bottlings commemorating the 10th anniversary of the retailer established in 2007 and which is now renowned as one of the world’s leading whisky and spirits merchants.

The Glenlivet 11 Year Old 2006 has been specially selected by The Whisky Barrel from the warehouses at Signatory Vintage at Pitlochry in the Scottish Highlands. The Whisky Barrel hand selected this first-fill sherry hogshead cask due to its exceptional aromas and flavours.

Glenlivet Distillery produces single malt Scotch Whisky in Ballindalloch, Moray. It was founded in 1824 by George Smith and is the oldest legal distillery in the parish of Glenlivet. Following expansion in 2010 the distillery is now equipped with fourteen stills making it one of the largest malt whisky distilleries in Scotland.

Signatory Vintage was established by Andrew and Brian Symington in 1988 at Newhaven on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth. Having taken over the business in 1997 and purchased Edradour Distillery in Pitlochry in 2002, Andrew Symington moved his bottling business into new premises next to the Highland distillery.

The Glenlivet 11 Year Old 2006 Signatory 10th Anniversary has been aged for 11 years in a first-fill sherry hogshead cask #900552 yielding 316 bottles at natural cask strength. The whisky is richly sherried in colour and flavour.

Tasting notes:

Colour: Beautifully dark. Shine a light on it and a lovely caramelised sugar on the cusp of catching come out.

Nose: Rich sherry notes. Rum and raisin with soft Scottish toffee and dark chocolate. Leather boots and tobacco leaf add some real muscle but softened with strawberry and dried apricot.

Taste: Lovely warming chewiness of the sherry. Crisp red berries giving way mil chocolate raisins, oak and a touch of apricot sherbet. The high ABV makes it a big hitter. Left to some air relaxes it and brings out a little more chocolate and toffee.

Finish:  Long and lingering with a pleasant heat. Big spicy fruit cake with cinnamon and cloves with a touch of bitter chocolate. Dries to an oaky finish.

Price: £79.99 GBP / $87.00 USD (+ P&P)
