1988 Strathclyde 28 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Grain Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($79.99)

If there’s one thing we can help take credit for here at K&L, it’s been helping to remove the undeserved stigma associated with grain whisky in the Scotch industry. Maligned and misunderstood for years, it wasn’t until we started launching a number of 25-50 year old releases at ridiculously reasonable prices that hearts and minds began to change. When Nikka brought their delicious Coffey Still editions to the market and people saw just how fruity and delicious these corn and unmalted barley whiskies could be, we think grain whisky finally got over the hump. Crazily enough, today our single casks of grain whisky are some of the most anticipated by our customers. The 28 year old Strathclyde absolutely soaks up the vanilla from the oak barrel and brings loads of soft caramel along with it. At 58.2% there’s some power behind all that supple richness, which allows you to add ice or a bit of water.

Strathclyde is one of the Chivas grain whisky components and as we’re discovering here with this single cask release, it shines pretty well on its own as well. Grain whisky isn’t just delicious and easy to love, it reminds me of why I like to drink in the first place. To be able to purchase 29 year old cask strength Scotch for seventy-nine bucks is fun! It takes the pressure out of savoring each drop, which is definitely what I would want to do if I were to have paid $200 or more. We’ve got more grains in store as the year goes on, but few that are this old and this well priced.

I loved the the Port Dundas 26 single grain when we had it and at the time it was my favorite single grain I had tasted. Now I believe I will have to follow the example of my coworker Jeffrey and pronounce this my favorite single grain. The nose shows a fantastic complexity with the vanilla and spice notes being underpinned with a touch of lemon zest. Very soft and evolving palate that brings notes of fruit and creamy butterscotch lead to a long complex if subtle finish. The heat is definitely present here at the finish but a little water helps to calm it down and keeps helps highlight the length of the finish.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: February 17, 2017

This is one of the best single grain whiskeys that I have tasted. The nose is very expressive with vanilla , savory and spice notes. In the mouth it is very complex with a lot flavor offerings. What I tasted was a mixture of vanilla , caramel and spice with an interesting and enhancing hint of savory flavors. This bottle will be a lot of fun for lovers of single grain whiskeys.

1987 Glenturret 28 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml) ($99.99)

It’s rare to see a 25 year old whisky for less than $150 these days, and even when we do see the occasional bottle our first instinct is often to ask: what’s wrong with it? Understanding that natural reaction we had to ask ourselves: how will people respond when we offer them a 28 year old, single barrel, cask strength, Highland single malt for $99.99? We’re hoping you’ll be excited because we’re absolutely thrilled! Glenturret isn’t a household name among whisky drinkers, but for those in the know it’s part of the Edrington portfolio: the group that owns Macallan, Highland Park, and Glenrothes. Glenturret is also considered the oldest distillery in Scotland, having been founded in 1775, and today it’s the home of Famous Grouse: the world-renowned blended whisky in which it plays a large role. This 28 year old expression has reduced naturally down to a perfectly-drinkable 49.7% ABV and has the richness, oiliness, and concentration that only mature whisky can offer. It’s full of brandied fruit, resin, supple caramel, and creamy malted goodness. Despite its old age, the whisky is surprisingly lithe and light on its feet. By no means is this a heavy, full-bodied number, but rather a classic Highland whisky with plenty of barrel-aged complexity. For the price, it’s a no brainer.

David Driscoll | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: February 22, 2017

Man, this cask of Glenturret is just delicious in an old fashioned Scotchy way. It’s nothing more than sweet grains, sweet vanilla, sweet malt, and sweet oak from front to back and the creaminess from the 28 years spent in cask is apparent every step of the way. We sold out of our first Glenturret 28 year cask in about forty-five minutes last year. I’m hoping those of you who missed out that time can get a bottle this time around. It’s one of the better values I’ve ever come across in my ten year career.

Andrew Stevens | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: February 20, 2017

The pricing we are getting from Old Particular is almost bordering on the ridiculous at this point. I almost feel like I am in a time machine seeing 28 year old single malt for under $100. More importantly though is that it is very tasty. Soft and subtle on the nose with the fruit overlaying a touch of wood. The palate is light and delicate with notes of green apple, lemon bar, vanilla and spice. Surprisingly gentle finish, the heats starts slow and builds up but does not truly ever overpower. Delicious!

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: February 17, 2017

Another great older single malt from Old Particular. The Glenturret offers the delicate flavor profile of a mature single malt. I really liked the honey and wax aromas that were pretty and inviting. In the mouth the honey theme continues in a complex and subtle way that creates a delicious drink. Older single malts do not last long in inventory.

Lucky Bastard Straight Malted Rye Whisky Released

Saskatoon, SK, February 23, 2017 – LB Distillers is pleased and excited to announce the release of their first malt whiskies. Release number 1 is a Lucky Bastard Straight Malted Rye Whisky and release number 2 is a Lucky Bastard Single Malt Whisky. The whiskies will be available exclusively at LB Distillers and exclusively to our customers who entered the Lucky Bastard Whisky Lottery. Given the high anticipation and demand for the very limited supply of our whisky, we thought it best to have customers enter an email lottery allowing the winners a chance to purchase a bottle without having to stand outside in line during a Saskatchewan winter. To enter our Whisky Lottery for upcoming releases, please check out www.luckybastard.ca/whisky-lottery-1

Lucky Bastard whiskies will be bottled as Single Cask offerings in individually numbered bottles. Our first release is a STRAIGHT MALTED RYE WHISKY, distilled and barreled in 2012. This whisky was hand crafted in a very small batch using 100% Saskatchewan grown and malted grains. The mash bill of the first release is 67% malted rye and 33% malted barley. This whisky has aged four years in a charred American white oak barrel and has been bottled at 46% alcohol. It has not been chill filtered to retain all the amazing flavours. Our second release is a traditional SINGLE MALT BARLEY WHISKY, distilled and barreled in 2013. This whisky was also hand crafted in a small batch using 100% Saskatchewan grown and malted grains consisting of 100% malted barley. This whisky has aged 3 years in charred American white oak barrels and has been bottled at 46% alcohol and again it has not been chill filtered to retain all the amazing flavours.

Our whisky program is very diverse currently consisting of 23 styles of whisky each offering a unique experience. The mash bills (recipes) consist of different combinations of a variety of malted cereal grains, different roasts, and some have had local fruits and botanicals added to the initial fermentation. For our whiskies, we do only two distillations in our two copper pot stills. The first distillation is to strip the alcohol from the fermentation, the second to make cuts allowing us to capture only the crème de la crème of the spirit. We only distill to 75% alcohol allowing our spirit to retain all the wonderful notes and flavours of the grains, malt, yeast and esters created in the fermentations. Every barreling will also be unique depending on the style and flavor profile we desire; using once used bourbon barrels, new whisky barrels (with various char profiles), French oak, ex-sherry casks etc. Every release will be small batch, single cask bottlings and will be individually labeled and numbered.

LB Distillers was established in 2010 and opened its doors in 2012. Since that time, we have been handcrafting the world’s finest spirits and liqueurs using locally sourced grains and fruit. We believe in quality over quantity and we won’t bottle it until it is over-proof awesome.

Littlemill 25 Year Old 2015 Release

The Collector’s Loft, Littlemill

50.4% vol. / 70clcl

Ex VAT £1,875.00

This 25 year old Lowlands Single Malt comes from the now lost Littlemill distillery on the banks of the River Clyde in Bowling near Glasgow. Born from a selection of 10 casks from 1989 and 1990, hand-picked by Master Blenders John Peterson and Michael Henry to best represent the quality and style of whisky from the distillery which closed in 1994 and burned down in 2004. The liquid has been drawn from American and European oak casks and married together and finished in first fill European Oloroso sherry casks. Unusually for a Lowland malt, the Littlemill distillery used a highland water source as well as peat from Stornoway and Perthshire. Known for its subtle floral, vanilla-rich sweetness, this incredibly rare liquid comes in a beautiful presentation case with a miniature taster and a piece of the cask used for maturation!

SOCIETY’S COLOURFUL NEW BOTTLE DESIGN FOCUSES ON FLAVOUR – Scotch Whisky News

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society new bottle design 2 copy

SOCIETY’S COLOURFUL NEW BOTTLE DESIGN FOCUSES ON FLAVOUR

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s new bottle design highlights its 12 flavour profiles

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society has unveiled a colourful new design for its bottle, which emphasises its flavour-based approach to whisky – the first change to its bottle in almost a decade.

While the Society’s iconic green bottle and dedication to single cask whisky remains unchanged, the new look introduces 12 colours to the bottle caps, in a strip on the label and in the age statement. Each colour reflects one of the Society’s unique 12 whisky flavour profiles, such as ‘Young & Spritely’ or ‘Old & Dignified’.

The Society introduced its 12 flavour profiles in 2014 to help whisky lovers navigate the hundreds of bottles the Society releases each year, and to encourage people to focus more on the flavours within the whisky rather than on perceptions stemming from traditional regional classifications.

Another change is a larger age statement to reflect the fact the Society bottles its whiskies when it feels they are at their best, rather than following traditional ages such as 10, 12 and 18 years old.

Finally, the new design includes an update of the logo, which emphasises the shape of a whisky bottle in the Society’s spiritual home at the Vaults in Leith. The Society’s evocative and unusual bottle names, which are based on the flavour of the whisky (‘Juicy & Delightful’ remain on the label, again to focus attention on the flavour.

Helen Stewart, Senior Brand Manager for the Society, said: “Our new-look bottle blends our heritage with a colourful new design that reflects our 12 flavour profiles. The colours will help whisky lovers explore our range of flavours and ever-changing selection of whiskies.

“From our unique bottle names and Tasting Notes, to not revealing the distillery where the whisky is from, we’ve been celebrating the flavours of whisky for many years and this is the latest step in that journey.

“At the same time, our famous green bottle remains the same, as does our commitment to seeking out exceptional single cask whisky.”

John Walker & Sons Private Collection 2017 Edition

The 2017 Edition of the John Walker & Sons Private Collection is the fourth annual release in the series of limited edition releases showcasing the innovative spirit and craft of blenders. With complete creative freedom, Master Blender Dr Jim Beveridge celebrates the richness that cask character brings to Johnnie Walker whiskies.

Beveridge brings together three main styles of oak to complement the character of the spirit. First fill ex-bourbon American oak and refill American and European oak casks come together with highly active American oak from Beveridge’s stock of experimental casks to create a rich, balanced whisky of great depth. Only 5,588 individually numbered decanters have been produced worldwide.

The nose offers toffee and vanilla, with aromas of ripe orchard fruits. The palate brings rich, creamy toffee and gentle spice from the American oak, while the mature Highland and Speyside whiskies provide blackcurrants and berries, soft peach and stewed apples. A touch of leather emerges before a silky finish with intense, deepening vanilla.

There are a few Scottish distilleries that still malt their own barley but Springbank is the only Distillery which malts a 100% of its own barley, using the traditional floor maltings. The whole production process: malting, milling, mashing, fermentation, distillation, maturation & bottlling, happens on the one site in Campbeltown. This is unique in Scotland.

Tasting notes from the Distillery  Nose What an incredible nose, to start with marmalade and honey, then mineral notes from the Kintyre peninsula. As it opens up, freshly baked bread with sweet notes of sun dried bananas to contrast with salted caramel topping. Palate The promise given in the nose continues, a lovely creaminess and sweetness of grapes, custard, honeycomb and marshmallow. This is balanced with salted popcorn and liquorice, and an ever present, hint of peat. Finish There’s a nutty quality about this, almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts as well as an air of indulgence, rich and buttery with an elegant finish that keeps on giving.
