The Whisky Exchange “The story of bourbon barrels in whisky” – Scotch Whisky News

WHY SCOTCH WHISKY IS AGED IN BOURBON BARRELS

If you’ve ever opened a bottle of whisky and been greeted by aromas of vanilla or coconut, chances are there was an American oak cask somewhere in its past. While whiskies aged in sherry and other wine casks are popular at present, the white oak ex-bourbon barrel is still the most widely used cask type in Scotland. In fact, more than 90% of all whiskies ageing in Scotland currently reside in used bourbon barrels.

Bladnoch Distillery announces partnership with Wigtown Book Festival – Scotch Whisky News

Bladnoch Distillery announces partnership with Wigtown Book Festival

Bladnoch, Scotland’s oldest privately-owned Scotch whisky distillery has announced a partnership with the 27th annual Wigtown Book Festival.

Running from 26 September – 5 October 2025, Wigtown Book Festival is a ten-day literary celebration in Scotland’s National Book Town, which is also home to the 208-year-old Bladnoch Distillery. Founded in 1999, Wigtown Book Festival is one of the UK’s most prominent literary showcases, with more than 200 events including music, theatre, food, visual arts and a prestigious cast of authors.

As part of the distillery’s partnership with Wigtown Book Festival, Bladnoch will sponsor the event’s team of more than 100 volunteers at the heart of the festival’s success, ensuring the unsung heroes behind the festival receive the support, training and recognition they deserve.

This collaboration unites two organisations rooted in resilience and community regeneration, strengthens community ties, supports cultural tourism, and showcases how grassroots dedication and enterprise can work hand in hand to transform a rural economy.

Rescued from closure in 2015 by Australian entrepreneur David Prior, Bladnoch Distillery is a major local employer and a hub for cultural events and whisky tourism in Dumfries & Galloway. This resilience and commitment to regeneration is at the heart of all the distillery does, including supporting the bold Galloway spirit of Wigtown Book Festival’s dedicated team of volunteers.

Wigtown Book Festival was founded to revitalise Galloway during a period of economic hardship and industrial decline. Today, it has grown into a nationally recognised literary and cultural event, powered by a dedicated team of local volunteers whose efforts attract more than 11,000 visitors annually, boosting the local economy and fostering pride in the community.

As part of its partnership with the festival, Bladnoch Distillery will host an exclusive storytelling event to celebrate the distillery and the region’s bold Galloway spirit. Taking place at the distillery at 7:30pm on Thursday 2 October and hosted by Scottish storyteller, author and travel influencer behind @scotlands_stories, Graeme Johncock, Bold Spirit: Tales of Galloway will be a unique evening celebrating Galloway’s distinctive identity and sense of mischief.

The 27th annual Wigtown Book Festival will also mark the release of Loch Maberry: Stories of Bladnoch, Chapter 2 on Thursday 2 October, the second chapter in a limited-edition series celebrating and selected by individuals who have a deep affinity with Bladnoch Distillery’s exceptional whiskies. The new single malt will be unveiled as part of the storytelling event, providing guests with the chance to taste the expression alongside Bladnoch master distiller Dr Nick Savage and the character who inspired its creation.

This will be the first opportunity for whisky enthusiasts to sample and purchase Loch Maberry Chapter 2, which will be available exclusively at Bladnoch Distillery and through Bladnoch’s online shop from this date.

Dr Nick Savage, Master Distiller at Bladnoch Distillery, said: “We’re proud to be working with the 27th annual Wigtown Book Festival to support the event’s team of dedicated volunteers. Together, we have forged a meaningful partnership rooted in community regeneration and cultural enrichment.

“At Bladnoch, our commitment to crafting our bold Galloway spirit is at the heart of all that we do. Bold Galloway spirit is exactly what the festival’s volunteers bring – courage, warmth and a passion that fuels Wigtown Book Festival year after year.”

Adrian Turpin, Wigtown Book Festival’s artistic director, said: “Bladnoch Distillery and Wigtown Book Festival have each played a central role in the regeneration of Wigtown over many years, which makes this a very special partnership.

“While, sadly, we can’t actually bottle the bold Galloway spirit of our volunteers, Bladnoch Distillery’s generosity will enable us to better support them and acknowledge the irreplaceable contribution they make to the success of the festival.”

Dating back to 1817, Bladnoch Distillery is one of the oldest single malt Scotch whisky producers in the world and is enjoying a bold and powerful revival. For more information about Bladnoch Distillery, please visit www.bladnoch.com.

Jim McEwan

Colour – Primrose Yellow, Aromas – Opens beautifully on a combination of Primrose, Myrtle, Lily, Marigold and mint. It’s like walking through the peat fires next to the Atlantic Ocean! Then the sweetness of the toasted barley and mellow oak drift in bringing with them little hints of bourbon spiciness laid down by the first spirit matured in the cask. “Its gentle on my mind” Taste – The spirit is balanced & restrained on the palate. This is pure Islay; No smoke, just barley & oak and time by the Ocean. The opulent flavours seduce the taste buds with mellow oak and barley sugars. The Maritime Islay character is with you all the way, fresh and clean and packed with passion & traditional skills from a dedicated team of Distillers who bring the magic to the spirit. No computers, no colouring, no chill filtration, just a special spirit from a special place.

This maturation took place in a 1st fill bourbon cask from an unknown American Distillery. Bottled in July 2022 as Release 5.1 of the Jim McEwan Signature Collection, like all bottlings within the collection, it was bottled un-chill filtered, with no added colour, and at natural cask strength of 59.0% (as we always say, Jim would have it no other way!), it yielded only 238 bottles.”

2012 Port Charlotte 10 Year Old “Dramfool’s Jim McEwan Signature Collection 7.2″ First Fill Bourbon Barrel Cask #2554 Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) (Previously $370) $258.10 View

Aromas – Opens on a beautiful combination of peat smoked barley with tantalising hints of lemon & honey then waves of heather in bloom drift by. Little notes of juniper and pine mingle beautifully with the spiciness of bourbon residue and sweetness of malt extract. It’s Islay at its best, in the early summer with the warm winds from the Atlantic Ocean caressing the barley fields and depositing the salty moisture on the land that give the barley its unique flavour. Palate – The sweetness of malt extract is in harmony with the smokiness from the peat and also the spicy residue from bourbon-soaked staves, it evolves slowly creating the flavour profile that makes this spirit unique. The most important element of this spirit is that it is distilled by Islanders who simply walk in the footsteps of their fore-fathers; no computers, no chemists, no BS, just passion pride and patience.

This release was distilled on July 18th, 2012 after spending its entire 10-year life maturing in cask #2554, a first-fill Bourbon barrel from the Jack Daniels distillery. It was bottled in February 2023 without chillfiltration and no added color, at a natural cask strength of 60.6%. Only 232 bottles were produced. Tasting notes from Jim McEwan: “Aromas – Opens on a beautiful combination of peat smoked barley with tantalising hints of lemon & honey, then waves of heather in bloom drift by. Silver anniversary celebrations for one of whisky’s most famous icons as the much-loved Glencairn Glass turns 25 – Whisky Glass News

Silver anniversary celebrations for one of whisky’s most famous icons

as the much-loved Glencairn Glass turns 25

This year marks a momentous milestone for Glencairn Crystal as the globally loved Glencairn Glass celebrates its 25th birthday.

Since its launch in 2000, the Glencairn Glass, the world’s official whisky glass and winner of the Queen’s Award for Innovation, has become the tasting glass for connoisseurs, collectors and distillers alike – a modern icon designed to elevate the whisky drinking experience for whisky lovers everywhere.

“When I first sketched the idea for the Glencairn Glass all those years ago, I wanted to create a proper whisky glass, something that would bring out the best in the spirit that we hold so dear,” said Raymond Davidson, the founder of Glencairn Crystal and the creator of the Glencairn Glass.

A global glass phenomenon

Since its debut a quarter century ago, more than 5 million Glencairn Glasses are now sold each year, with 50 million glasses sold to date across more than 140 countries. To give this figure some context, 50 million Glencairn Glasses stacked one on top of the other would nearly reach the centre of the Earth – or would be more than 650 times taller than Mount Everest.

Whether it’s used in whisky tastings, distillery tours, or proudly displayed in home collections, the Glencairn Glass is instantly recognisable by its tulip shape, expertly designed to concentrate aromas and enhance every sip. It is also widely respected within the industry as the official glass for whisky, endorsed by master blenders, distillers, and aficionados.

“To see the Glencairn Glass embraced by whisky drinkers around the world over the last twenty-five years has been incredibly humbling and exciting. We would like to thank the industry we love for all their support over the years and invite them to raise a Glencairn Glass in celebration with us!” said Raymond.

Cheers to 25 Years

As the Glencairn Glass celebrates its silver anniversary, Glencairn Crystal is preparing a host of fun activities and celebrations filled with nostalgia, community spirit and whisky appreciation. From retro throwbacks to exclusive limited-edition releases, the celebrations will span across Glencairn’s online store, Amazon platform, and social media channels bringing fans together to toast a quarter-century of innovation within whisky and the iconic glass that changed the way we enjoy our drams.

Glencairn Crystal was started by Raymond Davidson over 40 years ago and the award-winning company remains a proud family-owned business based in East Kilbride, Scotland. With Raymond’s sons Paul and Scott at the helm, the company has grown from a specialist glassware studio to a pillar of the global whisky industry – having worked with more than 600 distilleries worldwide whilst keeping its craftsmanship rooted in family values and Scottish tradition.

For more information and updates on the 25th anniversary celebrations, visit www.whiskyglass.com  or follow on social media @TheGlencairnGlass.

  • Over 5 million glasses are now sold every year – which is enough to give every person in the whole of New Zealand their own glass each annually.
  • 50 million Glencairn Glasses have been sold to date:
    • If you stacked 50 million Glencairn Glasses one of top of the other they would stretch 5,750 km – well into outer space, far beyond satellites, the International Space Station, and even the Earth’s atmosphere. That’s almost enough to reach the centre of the Earth or be well on your way to orbit.
    • 50 million Glencairn Glasses stacked on top of each other is also over 650 times the height of Mount Everest.
    • If laid end to end, that’s also more than enough Glencairn Glasses to stretch from New York to London.
