Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 273: The Fenians 16 Year Old 2002 for MMM

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, releases his next MMM-bottling. Every year Mark and Manny try to put an odd one out in their series. This year… an Irish single malt! They dubbed it the Fenians. Originating in Irish mythology with the Fianna, the term derives from groups of legendary warrior bands following Fionn mac Cumhail. Fenian today is seen as a derogatory sectarian term in Ireland to refer to Irish nationalists and/or Catholics, particularly in Northern Ireland. The term has been used similarly in Scotland as a slur to refer to Scottish Catholics or Scots with Irish ancestry. MMM are very proud on their Irish discovery, for this fruit bomb will keep a smile on your face throughout the Indian summer to come. Delicious with capital D!

This whisky is sourced from the now closed Port Dundas distillery and released by Greg Glass and his new experimental arm of Whyte & Mackay. It’s fun, it’s affordable and I like it! Cheers

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 272: Caol Ila 22 Year Old Feis Ile 2019

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, got his hands on the Caol Ila for Feis Ile 2019. He had to wait for it for a little while, but thanks to a Scottish pal he was finally able to get his hands on this Feis Ile 2019 release from his favorite distillery on Islay. Very refreshing to see that they very transparently put on the label that the whisky matured on ‘sherry-treated American Oak casks’. And guess what? Mark says it’s out of this world!

Back over to the land where it all began; Ireland. Pot still whiskies are a love of my life, along with many other things, but nothing sums up quality in Irish whisky more than a well made Pot Still whisky. Green Spot is a fun time in summer: toffee, butterscotch, rye spices, fresh green fruits and a nice, healthy approach to gentle and lingering spices. Cheers!
