Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 448: Caol Ila 2010 Signatory Vintage Cask Strength Collection
Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries a very sherried Caol Ila. A few weeks ago his whisky buddy Rainer sent Mark a message about this bottle. And whether he would be allowed to come by to have it tasted and whether Mark would like to make a Rambling about it? Yes & yes. And so here we are.
This is a bottle I’ve been chasing since receiving a sample from a viewer, always very kind this community!
The smell of this thing is so alluring that it made me think that it could be a top 5 whisky ever. The development from smell to taste is so hefty and oak driven, spicy and sumptuous with caramel, tobacco and menthol. A finish that is a little bit of damp squib compared to the rest of the whisky, but either way, at £60 a bottle it doesn’t break the bank, and it’s a smaller/lesser known brand of cask strength bourbon. It is certainly worth checking out if you’re a fan of bottles like Elijah Craig, Stagg and Kentucky Owl.
Cheers

Welcome to this weeks episode of the show in which I’ll be taking a look at a selection of relatively new releases from Mossburn Distillers.
Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 447: Lagavulin 11 Year Old Offerman 2nd Edition Guinness Cask Finish
Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries the 2nd Offerman edition from Lagavulin. At the end of last year Mark tasted the first release of the Lagavulin Offerman Edition, named after Nick Offerman, American actor and comedian who makes no secret of the fact that he loves to drink Lagavulin. Now let him also like to drink Guinness. It was then no art for this Islay distillery to give some of their 11-year-old whisky a finish on such casks. The Offerman 2nd Release was born.
Hinch Blended Whiskey, 43%
Hinch are one of the new Irish distillers on the block, looking to make their mark in a vastly and ever expanding industry. A distillery that has a huge range of products, from 5YO and 10YO releases, Pot Still whiskies, sherry maturation, peated expressions, and this, their entry level blended whisky at 43% ABV. A mix of first fill bourbon matured stocks of both malt and grain, presented in a very memorable bottle and label. Does it make a dent in the entry level category of Irish whiskey? We shall see.
