Lochlea celebrates the autumn season on the farm with ‘Fallow Edition’ (Second Crop) release – Scotch Whisky News

Lochlea celebrates the autumn season on the farm

with ‘Fallow Edition’ (Second Crop) release

Award winning farm-to-cask Ayrshire distillery – Lochlea – is revealing the third expression in a new set of four seasonal limited edition whiskies – Fallow – that celebrates autumn on the farm.

‘Fallow Edition’ (Second Crop) reveals the richer, darker flavours found in Lochlea’s house whisky profile. Matured exclusively in Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, the whisky is full of sweet and spiced notes – perfect to sip and savour as the dark, autumnal nights close in.

The whisky pays homage to a vitally important time of year on the farm, marking the months when the land finally has time to rest and be restored. It is also a key part of the sustainability programme at Lochea – both as part of the farm and the distillery.

After nearly five months of barley growth on the farm – followed by harvest in September – the team at Lochlea plant cover crops of mustard and radish to open up the soil through winter, whilst also creating a leafy canopy to help prevent soil erosion. This cover crop is then intensively grazed with sheep for 4 to 6 weeks, before it is consolidated back into the soil as added organic material.

In addition to this, straw bales – which are the by-product of growing barley – are provided to neighbouring farmers for them to use as bedding for their cattle. Some of this comes back as manure, which is then spread back onto the barley fields in the winter before ploughing – all adding to the natural and sustainable practices which are a key part of every-day life at Lochlea.

Lochlea owner and farmer Neil McGeoch said: “Fallow season within our farming calendar is a vital time of year for us to regenerate the land ready for our barley to grow well in the spring and summer. This release is so important to us, as it gives us a chance to tell the story of the farm and explain some of our sustainable practices.”

The split between the two different types of sherry cask used for ‘Fallow Edition’ (Second Crop) are 55% Pedro Ximénez casks and 45% Oloroso casks.

Production Director John Campbell said: “ In this ‘Fallow Edition’ (Second Crop) – the third in our new set of four seasonal limited editions – we have used a combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez (PX) Sherry Butts. The introduction of the PX casks this year creates a very different flavour profile to our first release of ‘Fallow Edition’ (First Crop) last year, which saw us use only Oloroso casks.”

“This warming and unctuous whisky starts with aromas of rich manuka honey, moving to luscious golden syrup and ground coffee beans. Layers of sweetly spiced candied ginger follow on the palate, leading to the finish offering hints of freshly crushed almonds.

We’re proud of this bold, rich whisky and hope Lochlea lovers will enjoy exploring this other side to our house spirit!”

Lochlea’s seasonal releases are as follows:

  • Fallow Edition: reflects the season of autumn on the farm when the fields are left fallow to rest after a busy harvest.
  • Ploughing Edition: released in winter when the fields are ploughed in preparation for spring.
  • Sowing Edition: inspired by spring when the seed is sown for the year’s barley crop.
  • Harvest Edition: inspired by the annual harvest on the farm.

As with all of Lochlea’s whiskies, ‘Fallow Edition’ (Second Crop) is non-chill filtered – it has been bottled at 46% ABV – RRP: £51.50, available from Lochlea stockists from 26th October onwards.

In addition to the seasonal limited edition releases, Lochlea has a core whisky expression available all year round – Our Barley. This unpeated single malt has been matured in a combination of three different casks: first fill ex-bourbon, Oloroso sherry casks and STR barriques, all of which add depths of flavour to the spirit. Launched in July 2022, Our Barley has received much acclaim as a superb example of a young non-age statement (NAS) Lowlands whisky, made entirely from the distillery’s own home-grown barley.

NEW WINE CASK WHISKIES FROM THE GLENALLACHIE – Scotch Whisky News

NEW WINE CASK WHISKIES

FROM THE GLENALLACHIE

Prominent Scotch whisky distillery rolls out three

new limited edition single malts matured in fine wine casks

Leading Scotch whisky producer The GlenAllachie today introduces a second tranche of single malt bottlings to join its acclaimed Wine Cask Series.

The trio of new bottlings include an 11-year-old Premier Cru Classé Cask Finish (UK RRSP £63), a 10-year-old Grattamacco Cask Finish (UK RRSP £58) and a 9-year-old Douro Valley Cask Finish (UK RRSP £57).

The rare oak casks were expertly sourced by The GlenAllachie’s Master Distiller and leading whisky maker of 50 years, Billy Walker, from three fine wine producers located in France, Italy and Portugal.

Each expression was initially matured in premium ex-Bourbon American oak barrels before being transferred to the various European red wine casks.

With 1,800 cases produced, the 11-year-old was aged in French oak that previously held a prestigious Premier Cru Classé wine, obtained from one of just five châteaux to hold this top Bordeaux wine classification. The subsequent whisky boasts “notes of blackcurrant cordial, warming mocha, truffle and gingersnap biscuits”.

Hailing from Italy, the certified organic Super Tuscan barriques from Grattamacco – the second winery established in the renowned Bolgheri region – have imparted “layers of pink grapefruit, wild honey, raspberry jelly and sweet spice” on the 2,600 cases of 10-year-old single malt created.

Douro Valley, one of the world’s oldest protected wine regions, holds some of Portugal’s most esteemed wine estates with the country’s highest classification: Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC). The rare barriques have delivered “hints of dried apricots, cinnamon sticks and vanilla custard,” with a total of 2,000 cases of whisky available.

The three expressions are proudly presented at a high strength of 48% ABV, are unchill filtered and have no added colouring.

Remarking on the launch, Walker shares:

“We’re incredibly fortunate to have worked with some of the best wine producers in Europe for these wonderful releases. I’m a devoted wine enthusiast, so, on a personal level, this series brings together two passions: fine wine and Scotch whisky.

“We’re proud to have achieved a vast spectrum of flavour characteristics across these three bottlings: the Premier Cru Classé offers up rich dark fruit attributes; the Grattamacco overflows with brown sugar and honeycomb notes; and the Douro Valley delivers an elegant stone fruit quality.”

Last month, The GlenAllachie announced its new peated single malt brand, Meikle Tòir, with a portfolio of four products, including the coveted Turbo 2023 Edition with just 2,500 bottles released worldwide.

With UK RRSPs starting at £57, The GlenAllachie Wine Cask Series Batch 2 will become increasingly available over the coming weeks from global specialist retailers.

ABOUT GLENALLACHIE:

One of Scotland’s few independently owned and managed distilleries, The GlenAllachie is led by industry veteran, Billy Walker, who boasts over a half-century’s tenure in whisky. With an emphasis on wood policy, The GlenAllachie’s cask budget for 2023 stands at an eye-watering £2.7m/$3.3m. With 16 on-site warehouses holding over 50,000 casks, we have complete control of the end-to-end maturation process.

The GlenAllachie focuses on quality over quantity, which is why we chose to reduce our production capacity from 4 million to around 800,000 LOA (Litres of Alcohol) and increase our fermentation period to 160 hours for an ester-rich, fruity spirit.

We believe age and integrity matter, which is why all our whiskies carry an age statement and are bottled at a minimum of 46% ABV, natural colour and non-chill filtered for maximum flavour.

Our other brands are Meikle Tòir Peated Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, MacNair’s Boutique House of Spirits – encompassing Lum Reek Blended Malt Scotch Whisky – and White Heather Blended Scotch Whisky.

Why Whiskies Like This Glendronach Are To Thank For The Creation of Signatory Vintage – Scotch Whisky News

Why Whiskies Like This Glendronach Are To Thank For The Creation of Signatory Vintage

Prestonfield House Hotel in Edinburgh and the independent bottler, Signatory Vintage, have an interesting, shared history.

This Glendronach 1970 18 Year Old Prestonfield House may be, in part, to thank for the creation of one of the most iconic independent bottlers in the Scotch whisky industry.

Prestonfield House Hotel is a 5-star luxury hotel in the heart of Edinburgh and has intrinsic links to Signatory Vintage through the founder of the independent bottling company, Andrew Symington. Symington worked at Prestonfield House as the Assistant Manager in the 1980s, when the hotel had a number of single malt whiskies bottled especially for the hotel and its exclusive clientele.

In the 1980s, single malt, single cask whiskies were not the done thing, and were relatively uncommon. As such, the Prestonfield House bottlings were something of an innovation, and allowed the hotel to offer something select for their guests. With the help of Andrew Symington, Prestonfield House bottled some incredible cask strength whiskies, and Symington found a new passion. Soon after, Signatory Vintage was established.

Since its inception in 1988, Signatory Vintage has bottled some very impressive whiskies including this stunning Rosebank 1960 32 Year OId and a 1967 30 Year Old Ardbeg matured in an Oloroso butt.

In 2023, Mark Littler Limited was contacted by a private client who was lucky enough to own one of the bottlings that started it all. This Glendronach 1970 18 Year Old was bottled for Prestonfield House in the same year that Signatory Vintage was born, elegantly tying together the history of the two companies. The whisky was bottled from casks 542-558 and is bottle number 2142 of a limited edition.

If you are a fan of Signatory Vintage, then this bottle truly is a piece of Scotch whisky history. Who knows, without bottlings such as this, would Signatory Vintage exist at all?

González Byass bodega exterior

The four master makers of Spain and Scotland, each at the top of their craft, inherit a time-honoured collaboration between the two noble houses of wine and whisky making. The Sherry Edition is an expression of the whisky making artistry of this truly special relationship between The Dalmore and González Byass. The collection encapsulates their shared pursuit of the perfect composition.

The Sherry Edition story is born on the vine in sun-drenched Andalucia, a tale of the finest winemaking in a place whose character is shaped by the Easterly Mediterranean breeze and Atlantic winds from the West. Sherry wine is laid down here to develop its character over time, alive as it serpentines from cask to cask.

Each Sherry cask resides in a magnificent bodega, a spiritual place with a unique impression of peace, light, and space. On their regular visits to these hallowed winemaking spaces, The Dalmore’s whisky makers pick out those casks with the perfect potential for maturing whisky. Each cask has already lived a lifetime under the watchful eye of the winemakers at González Byass, before being selected for their new role as vessels for the finest Single Malt Scotch at The Dalmore. The Sherry Edition features three whiskies which have enjoyed a cask maturation between them of 80 years drenched in González Byass wines.

The curation of exquisite casks is intrinsic to the whisky making artistry for which The Dalmore has become world renowned. The Dalmore distillery was established to create a Single Malt like no other, leading to the pioneering of multi-cask maturation in 1868. Led today by Gregg Glass and Richard Paterson OBE, The Dalmore is home to an unbroken chain of visionary whisky makers, curating the rarest of casks in pursuit of creating truly exceptional whisky.

The Dalmore distillery’s collection of idiosyncratic stills creates a New Make spirit of unique character and depth – robust and fruity, particularly well-suited to longer and more complex maturation. This allows The Dalmore whisky makers to develop spirit over longer periods, and inspires them to seek out the finest and rarest casks from the world’s greatest vineyards and bodegas. Each of these exquisite casks offers unique potential, its characteristics influencing the personality of the Single Malt as it quietly matures over the months, years, and decades.

This collection is the first chapter. In 2024 the second release in The Dalmore Cask Curation Series will shine a light on the influence Port pipes have on the spirit, and celebrate our partnership with a famous Port wine maker. The third release arrives in 2025, followed by the fourth and final release concluding the series in 2026. About The Dalmore:

Founded in 1839 on the banks of the Cromarty Firth in the Scottish Highlands, the Dalmore has been making masterpieces of whisky for over 180 years.

The 12-point silver stag which proudly adorns each bottle was bestowed upon the first chieftain of Clan Mackenzie in 1263 by King Alexander III of Scotland. The stag became the whisky’s emblem when descendants of the clan took over the distillery in 1878.

The Dalmore distillery’s collection of idiosyncratic stills creates a New Make spirit of unique character and depth – robust and fruity, particularly well-suited to longer and more complex maturation. This allows renowned Master Whisky Maker Gregg Glass and his team to develop spirit over longer periods, continuing a tradition of visionary whisky-making as they fully express their art using rare casks from some of the world’s finest wineries and bodegas.

About González Byass:

It was 1835 when a youthful Manuel María González Ángel embarked on a long career in the world of wine. Tradition, innovation, sustainability, and the search for excellence are his legacy.

The young entrepreneur Manuel María González started his career in the world of a wine as a trader, working with Juan Bautista Dubosc and Francisco Gutiérrez de Agüera. However, his company grew successfully so quickly that he soon deemed it necessary to become involved in production too. He did so with the help of his maternal uncle, José Ángel, nicknamed ‘Tio Pepe’, who taught him everything he knew. He named the very first solera “Tío Pepe’s Solera” in his honour. This was the origin of the world’s most famous Fino, which in 1854, just 20 years later, became one of the leading players in and first exporter of Sherry, a privileged position that it would keep for a long time.

The first bottles of Tío Pepe were sent to the United Kingdom on the advice of Robert Blake Byass, the company’s agent in England, to whom Manuel María sent a letter with the recommendation of selling an “exceptionally pale” wine. The successful uptake of the wine led the two businessmen to form a partnership to promote exports, and the González Byass name was born.

This period saw the construction of La Constancia winery, the first winery in Jerez, which has been followed by the acquisition of others, both in Spain and internationally. Today, the 5th generation of still run it as a family business and spread their passion for wine to more than 100 countries all over the world.

At González Byass we have stayed true to our roots whilst also moving forward to offer the best wines and spirits all over the world. This commitment has seen us grow to 14 wineries in Spain, Chile, and Mexico, as well as producing a range of prominent spirits.

In recent years we have purchased Veramonte in Chile, Pedro Domecq in Mexico, and our latest acquisition, Dominio Fournier, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero. Over this period we have increased the spirits family through the creation of our premium gin ranges, The London Nº 1 and MOM, and Nomad, our whisky made and aged in Scotland and finished in Jerez.

KNOB CREEK® BOURBON PARTNERS WITH SMITHEY IRONWARE® TO RELEASE A LIMITED EDITION CAST IRON SKILLET IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Honoring the brands’ shared commitment to the art of craftsmanship, the Knob Creek x Smithey 18x Seasoned Limited Edition Cast Iron Skillet Set celebrates the re-release of Knob Creek® 18 Year Old Bourbon

CLERMONT, KY – October 20, 2023 – Knob Creek®, a leader in the Small Batch Bourbon category, announces a partnership with Smithey Ironware, premium manufacturer of artisanal cookware, to create a limited edition high-quality cast iron skillet. To celebrate the re-release of Knob Creek 18 Year Old Bourbon, the skillet is seasoned 18 times, 15 times more than Smithey’s traditional skillets, creating a naturally non-stick cast iron with a rich, deep copper color and easy-to-clean finish.

“Knob Creek fans appreciate the quality of intentional workmanship, and we’re excited to re-release our extra-aged Knob Creek 18 Year Old for a limited time,” said Seventh Generation Master Distiller Fred Noe. “The partnership between Knob Creek and Smithey Ironware came from the passion that both brands have for the details, whether it’s with cooking or in a fine glass of bourbon. With this special 18x seasoned cast iron skillet, we were able to come together and create a product that celebrates those fine details, alongside the re-release of Knob Creek’s oldest release to date.”

Savoring the aging process, Knob Creek transforms as it matures in its oak barrels and a cast iron’s performance improves as layers of seasoning build with each use. Aged twice as long as its flagship bourbon, Knob Creek 18 Year Old is a complex yet balanced bourbon with deep flavors of caramelized oak and sweet vanilla with a warm finish. Just like the deep flavors that are developed when cooking with a cast iron skillet, Knob Creek 18 Year Old has exceptional full flavor.

“The partnership between Knob Creek and Smithey came together seamlessly. Both brands stand on the pillar of detailed craftsmanship, so creating a product together that demonstrates that was only right,” said Smithey Ironware Founder, Isaac Morton. “We’re excited to offer this exclusive cast iron skillet to compliment the 18 years that Knob Creek’s expertly aged limited edition bourbon, and we know culinary and bourbon fans alike will really appreciate what we’ve designed together.”

For home cooks and bourbon aficionados, Knob Creek and Smithey Ironware worked with Brian Landry, Executive Chef The Kitchen Table, QED Hospitality, to create three unique recipes with the 18x seasoned cast iron skillet in mind. Each dish incorporates Knob Creek expressions as an integral ingredient and highlights the whiskey’s robust flavors, giving fans the opportunity to experience the ultimate sipping and savoring experience. This year, Alinta (previously the only peated expression by Bladnoch) is joined by 4 new peated whiskies to create a collection for those who love a dram with some fire.

Alinta, derived from indigenous Australian languages, evokes images of “fire” and “flames” and was the first peated whisky to be added to the Bladnoch range since the distillery was taken over by David Prior in 2015. Alinta is uniquely crafted using a combination of PX Sherry and ex-bourbon casks and evokes the notes of campfire embers found in each sip, completely different to anything that had previously been released by Bladnoch Distillery, and not particularly emblematic of the typical Lowlands style of whisky.

Joining Alinta to create Bladnoch’s Peated Collection are four new whiskies made with peated barley: Alinta Reserve, and the three Single Casks, each showcasing distinct flavours and characteristics. Dr. Nick Savage, Bladnoch’s Master Distiller, hand selects each cask, ensuring only the highest quality and most unique casks make it into this exclusive collection.

Dr. Nick Savage

Speaking about this collection, Dr. Savage commented, “The Bladnoch Peated Collection has been inspired by our 2009 stocks, which are uniquely 100% peated. Lowland single malt is not traditionally peated, however, the launch of Alinta had such an amazing reception from everyone. I wanted to extend this limited but unique peated section in our portfolio for those who enjoy the smoky styles of Bladnoch. Our peated collection is an annual celebration of the extremely unique and rare 2009 stocks at Bladnoch.”

The Alinta Reserve, a limited batch release of only 2,000 bottles, will be selected annually by Dr. Nick Savage. For the inaugural 2023 batch, 100% first-fill Amontillado Sherry Hogshead casks were chosen, providing a well-balanced experience of smoky campfire and white chocolate.

The Peated Collection Single Casks are created using Bladnoch’s 2009 maturing stocks, which are exclusively 100% peated and exceptionally rare. Each year, Dr. Nick Savage will access these exceptional 2009 stocks to select and release three single casks, showcasing the rarity, scarcity, and uniqueness of Bladnoch’s peated history. For the three single casks of the first Peated Collection Dr. Nick Savage has selected Rum, Bourbon, and Sherry Hogshead casks.

The Sherry Hogshead expression packs a punchy ABV of 58.3% and is limited to just 262 bottles. The nose of this whisky is reminiscent of polished oak with nuances of nutmeg and dates. On the palate, you’ll discover bonfire smoke along with plum jam and the finish leaves you with the comforting taste of a Bonfire Christmas cake, a truly exceptional and indulgent experience that perfectly embodies the spirit of Bladnoch’s Peated Collection.

Next in the Single Cask line-up is the 2009 Rum Cask edition of the Peated Collection where there are 248 bottles available. Here, the nose introduces notes of sugar cane, enriched with a floral and herbal body, setting the stage for an extraordinary tasting experience. As you explore the palate, you’ll uncover the flavours of marshmallows on a campfire combined with apple pie. The finish is subtly dry, offering a delightful mouthfeel with the lingering sweetness of smoke.

Finally, the 2009 Bourbon Barrel is a celebration of rich, smoky flavours that will delight the senses and this Single Cask expression is limited to 231 bottles. The nose reveals notes of smoky vanilla custard and on the palate, you’ll find toasted vanilla pods with the warmth of sandalwood. The finish is a perfect blend of sweetness and smoky warmth.

Each of the Bladnoch Peated Collection whiskies, as with all Bladnoch’s whiskies, are created without chill-filtration and with natural colour. Alinta Reserve will be available through markets including the UK, Germany, Taiwan, Australia and Korea; The Bladnoch Peated Single Casks will be available in the UK only through Bladnoch’s website.

The Peated Collection will be available to purchase online from Monday 23rd October: https://uk.bladnoch.com/pages/the-peated-collection

Yellowstone Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Toasted Staves to Launch in October – Bourbon Whiskey News

Yellowstone Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Toasted Staves to Launch in October

The first release within Yellowstone’s new Special Finishes Collection will be the latest full-time member of the Yellowstone brand family

ST.LOUIS (Oct. 9, 2023) – Yellowstone Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Toasted Staves – the first release within the brand’s Special Finishes Collection and the latest inspiration from Limestone Branch Distillery Master Distiller Stephen Beam – is set to hit retail shelves in October. Aged four years and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV), Yellowstone Toasted will be available nationwide at a suggested retail price of $49.99 per 750-ml bottle.

Yellowstone Toasted starts with the brand’s traditional bourbon mash bill, which is then stave finished. Beam, a seventh-generation master distiller, hand-selected a combination of five different staves – high toast, American oak double-toast, vanilla, rick house and spice rack – to get the desired flavor profile.

The resulting bourbon features a nose of toasted caramel and vanilla with hints of fall spices and cinnamon; a medium body with notes of walnut, toffee, black tea and white pepper; and a crisp finish highlighted by cocoa, tobacco and oak.

“The Yellowstone Special Finishes Collection is a great way to honor more than 150 years of bourbon heritage while still keeping things fresh and exciting,” said Beam. “I began experimenting with toasted barrels in 2016, 2017, and 2018 with Yellowstone Limited Edition releases and again more recently with distillery-exclusive Yellowstone Toasted Single Barrel. My experience helped in crafting what stave flavors to use and at what percentage to get the right flavor profile for Yellowstone Toasted. I can’t wait for consumers to try this latest full-time member of the Yellowstone Bourbon family.”

Yellowstone Toasted packaging features the brand’s iconic bottle and Roosevelt Arch artwork, as well as a more prominent version of the Yellowstone brand name and a Special Finishes Collection call-out. The bottle’s brown top-wrap helps to differentiate Yellowstone Toasted Bourbon from other Yellowstone variants.

LEXINGTON BECOMES “OFFICIAL GATEWAY” TO THE KENTUCKY BOURBON TRAIL®” EXPERIENCE

LEXINGTON BECOMES “OFFICIAL GATEWAY” TO THE KENTUCKY BOURBON TRAIL®” EXPERIENCE

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Distillers’ Association (KDA) has announced that Lexington is the newest Official Gateway sponsor to the world-famous Kentucky Bourbon Trail® tourism program.

Already renowned as the “Horse Capital of the World,” Lexington’s additional signature industry designation will bring new economic growth and tourism opportunities to one of Kentucky’s most loved cities.

“With more than a dozen nearby distillery destinations, Bourbon is integral to Lexington’s economy and thriving tourism market,” said Mandy Ryan, Director of Kentucky Bourbon Trail® experiences for the non-profit KDA trade group.

“Lexington is doing a fantastic job showcasing the vibrant charm of our unique Kentucky Bourbon culture,” she said. “They’re a perfect and natural fit as an Official Gateway to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® adventure.”

As an Official Gateway sponsor, Lexington receives prominent placement on the KBT® website and marketing materials, including recommended itineraries, signage and more. Lexington joins Bardstown, Louisville and Northern Kentucky as Official Gateway level sponsors.

“Bourbon, horses, and Lexington are an unforgettable trifecta for those who know and love our city,” said Mary Quinn Ramer, President of VisitLex. “By becoming an Official Gateway, our unique culture built on these signature industries will be introduced to thousands of new visitors.

“As the Bourbon and horse industries have grown, so have our dining and hotel offerings ensuring that travelers from across the world are glad they visit.”

Kentucky Bourbon Trail® members in the greater Lexington area include Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg; Alltech’s Town Branch Distillery in Lexington; Wild Turkey Distillery, Lawrenceburg; Wilderness Trail in Danville and Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles.

Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour® members include Barrel House Distilling, Fresh Bourbon, James E. Pepper Distilling and RD1 Spirits in Lexington; Bluegrass Distillers in Midway; Castle & Key, Millville; Hartfield & Co., Paris; , and Whiskey Thief Distilling, Frankfort.

Lexington also features many popular venues like the 21c Museum Hotel and Lockbox restaurant and bar, which serve local food and Bourbon cocktails. Visitors can also eat well and sleep tight at the Campbell House and its dining destination, The Rackhouse Tavern.

Lexington is known for horses, so a horse farm tour with Horse Country is a popular attraction for visitors as well. Fans from around the world also flock to Keeneland which hosts world-class thoroughbred racing twice annually during its boutique Spring and Fall meets.

The KDA created the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® tour in 1999 to give visitors an intimate, educational look behind the state’s most historic distilleries. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour® launched in 2012 as the first excursion in the country to showcase smaller distilleries.

Bourbon Trail™ tourists made a record 2.1 million distillery visits last year, the first time the KBT® experiences eclipsed two million in total attendance in its history. In the last 10 years, the amber adventure has skyrocketed by a phenomenal 370% in attendance.

KDA President Eric Gregory said KBT® experiences are an integral part of local and state tourism efforts. Research shows Bourbon tourists trend younger, spend between $400 and $1,200 on their trip, travel in large groups and stay longer than the average visitor to Kentucky.

More than 70% of visitors are from outside Kentucky and nearly half have household incomes over $100,000. “This is a home run demographic for local communities, generating valuable revenue and tax dollars while boosting a hospitality industry still recovering from the pandemic.”

Gregory said Lexington’s distinctive blend of Bourbon, horses, dining and cultural attractions makes for a diverse visitor experience.

“Lexington showcases both the tradition of and innovations in Kentucky Bourbon,” Gregory said. “From centuries old distilleries to the state’s first Craft distilleries, this area offers an authentic Kentucky experience that makes it a true Bourbon lover’s dream destination.

“Lexington and its surrounding communities have seen what Bourbon can do for economic and job growth and the tourism it can bring. Now, as an Official Gateway to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, it’s going to be exciting to watch Bourbon help build the Lexington area even further.”

Keepers of the Quaich USA Gala Features Outlander Star Sam Heughan – Scotch Whisky News

Keepers of the Quaich USA Gala Features Outlander Star Sam Heughan

NY Event Celebrates Scotch Heritage with World’s Most Coveted Drams

NEW YORK, NY (October 2023) – Keepers of the Quaich USA Chapter (KOTQUSA.org), the American arm of the Blair Castle-headquartered Scotch whisky society, announced that Outlander star, philanthropist and founder of The Sassenach Scotch whisky, Sam Heughan, was the keynote speaker for the Gala at a private members club in Manhattan on October 4, 2023.

The Gala celebrated Scottish culture and heritage and showcased some of the U.S. market’s newest and rarest bottles of Scotch Whisky at a pre-dinner reception for 200 prominent opinion leaders, A-list media and top executives from leading suppliers, distributors, and retailers. Many of the attendees were “Keepers” who have been inducted into the society with pomp and circumstance by the parent organization at Blair Castle in the Scottish Highlands.

Heughan, as the Guest of Honor, took part in the important haggis ceremony, as well as leading a toast with his new award-winning whisky, The Sassenach, which he donated for the evening.

“Over the years, as I traveled, lived and worked abroad, I found myself incredibly homesick. One Christmas holiday, I vividly remember ordering a single malt, from the top shelf of my local London bar,” recalled Heughan, the star of the long-running TV series about Scottish history. “Instantly, the smell took me back to Scotland. Upon tasting, I had such a profound feeling of ‘home’… transported back to the hills and glens of Scotland.”

Keeping Scottish tradition alive, the evening’s first toast featured the presentation of a Scottish Quaich, the two handled drinking vessel that dates back to the 16th century. The Quaich is also known as the ‘Cup of Friendship,’ and has been used for centuries to welcome friends, family, and visitors at gatherings and celebrate the communal drinking of whisky.

“Scottish culture is a cornerstone of Scotch whisky and we are delighted to keep the storied traditions alive with the annual Keepers of the Quaich USA events,” said Chapter CoChair and Diageo’s Chief Marketing Officer Ed Pilkington. “The USA is the most important market for Scotch and there has always been an unwavering relationship and appreciation between Scotland and the USA, which we are honored to have the opportunity to uphold.”

The evening benefitted the Entrepreneurial Scotland Foundation, a charity that specializes in creating scholarship opportunities in the U.S. for people currently studying in Scotland, many whom are the first in their family to go to college.

Also speaking was the top Scottish government official in the U.S., Counsellor for Scottish Affairs Chris Thomson, who discussed the importance of whisky in the US/Scotland relationship.

Notable attendees at the event included: New York Football Giants Punter, Jamie Gillan, known as the Scottish Hammer; New York Giants Placekicker Graham Gano and Sir David MacMillan, PhD, FRS, FRSE, 2021 Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry, currently at Princeton University and is from the Glasgow region.

U.S. Market is Scotch’s Most Valuable and Growing, Particularly at High End

According to the Edinburgh-based Scotch Whisky Association and the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, in 2022 the United States was Scotch whisky’s most valuable market, worth $2.7 billion in supplier revenue and growing, up 4.2% from the prior year. Total market volume was nearly 10 million cases, which is equal to 120 million bottles.

“In fact, Americans’ taste for the ‘king of spirits’ is driven by a growing desire for the most expensive bottles, with over one billion dollars in revenue spent on the priciest bottles. That is up 16% over last year,” said Co-chair and Master Keeper Frank Coleman, President of Frank Coleman Strategies LLC.
