Crypto Collaboration for Belfast Whiskey – Irish Whiskey News

Crypto Collaboration for Belfast Whiskey

Titanic Distillers and Caskcoin offer a unique whiskey opportunity

BELFAST’S newest tourist attraction, and the city’s first working whiskey distillery in almost 90 years, has today announced its partnership with Caskcoin Belfast and creation of the 401 ClubX.

Drinks company Titanic Distillers has invested almost £8 million to convert the historic Titanic Pumphouse, in the heart of Belfast’s Titanic Quarter, into a new distillery and visitor centre, giving guests a chance to explore the site where Titanic last rested on dry ground, before her maiden voyage.

A listed building, the Pumphouse, and neighbouring Thompson Dry Dock, first opened in 1911 to service and accommodate the massive White Star transatlantic liners Olympic and Titanic.

Now, 112 years later, visitors can experience the workings of the new distillery and hear the story of Belfast’s whiskey tradition, why it disappeared and how it has now returned at the Pumphouse, the new home of Titanic Distillers.

However, the Belfast based distillery isn’t trapped in the past, as they have today announced a new partnership with Caskcoin Belfast to launch a unique whiskey opportunity utilising crypto tokens as proof of ownership, propelling the brand into the future of investments.

Named after the yard number allocated to Titanic by The White Star Line, 401 ClubX is offering consumers the opportunity to be part of the future of Titanic Distillers and Belfast’s new whiskey heritage, creating a community of like-minded individuals with a shared passion for whiskey and its provenance.

Each year, 3,333 cases will be offered for pre-purchase at a fixed price of £600/$750 per case of 6x70cl bottles.  Those who have pre-purchased cases will then be given priority to pre-purchase the following year, allowing them to complete the collection.

401 ClubX will utilise crypto tokens as proof of ownership, enabling members to procure whiskey from Titanic Distillers and partner, Caskcoin Belfast.

Members will also have early access to the latest news, releases, and events from Titanic Distillers, as well as a host of benefits:

  • Forward purchase the first cases of 5-Year-Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey spirit produced by Titanic Distillers, will be exclusively available to purchase by 401 Club X members.
  • Limited edition bottles and labels
  • Exclusive invites to bespoke events
  • Early access to distillery reserves and special edition bottles
  • Discounts off online and distillery purchases

HISTORIC WHISKIES ENCAPSULATE DISTILLERY’S ROLLERCOASTER PAST – Islay Single Malt Whisky News

HISTORIC WHISKIES ENCAPSULATE DISTILLERY’S ROLLERCOASTER PAST

Irreplaceable bottlings from the 1980s celebrate Ardbeg’s survival – against the odds

Ardbeg today releases two historic whiskies created at the most pivotal moments of the Islay single malt’s past. Uniting irreplaceable stock from the Distillery’s most turbulent time, Ardbeg The Rollercoaster uniquely captures its lows and highs. Contained within 143 sets, these two rare cask single malts are time capsules of a bygone Ardbeg. One was distilled in 1981 when the Distillery closed, many feared forever. The other in 1989, as its hope-filled revival began. Together, they embody the irrepressible spirit of Ardbeg, which has survived against the odds.

Founded in 1815 on the remote Scottish island of Islay, Ardbeg is famed for creating the world’s smokiest drams. But while this whisky is today revered around the world, its path has been strewn with challenges. In the 1970s, with fashion favouring blended whiskies, just a few casks each year were set aside to be matured as single malt. As a result, stock from that decade is exceptionally hard to come by. Then during the 1980s, the Scotch whisky industry suffered a downturn, which left Ardbeg in a perilous state. On 25th March 1981, the Distillery and on-site maltings closed, and it seemed the iconic name of Ardbeg might be lost for good. Over the next eight years, the Distillery stood silent, its future hanging in the balance. Eventually, as the outlook for Scotch improved, Ardbeg’s fortunes changed. And the Distillery re-opened under new ownership in October 1989, to begin a brave new chapter.

Created two weeks before the Distillery’s closure, The Rollercoaster’s first whisky is from the last cask remaining from the stock of 1981. This 42-year-old bottling was created from a blend of heavily peated malt (up to 110ppm) from Ardbeg’s own malting floors, as well lightly peated malt, only used at the Distillery for a very short period to create “Kildalton-style” Ardbeg. Aged in bourbon casks, then transferred into a single Oloroso sherry cask for rich, spicy notes, it is an unrepeatable taste of Ardbeg’s past.

Celebrating Ardbeg’s 1989 revival, The Rollercoaster’s second whisky is one of the Distillery’s final casks left from that year. It was distilled on 6th December, just weeks after production restarted. By then, malt was supplied by Islay’s Port Ellen Maltings. And to create spirit more suitable for blends, the peating level was lowered to 30-35ppm (today it is a minimum of 50ppm). After an initial maturation in bourbon casks, the whisky was later reracked into a single refill bourbon cask to enhance its subtle peated style. Aged 33 years, its unique flavours capture a singular moment in the Distillery’s history.

As its fans know well, however, Ardbeg’s tumult did not end in 1989 – and the Distillery closed again in 1996. Yet, saved from extinction a year later, it has gone from strength to strength. Ardbeg now has a near-cult following and is one of the highest-awarded smoky malts. Leaving its darkest days far behind, Ardbeg has shown itself to be among the world’s most collectible whiskies. And its core range has won legions of fans around the globe for its signature smoky and complex style.

CEO Caspar MacRae said: “From our Distillery’s most perilous low come two unrepeatable bottlings which take Ardbeg to new heights. Ardbeg The Rollercoaster shows just how far our Distillery has come since its uncertain past. Today, Ardbeg is one of the world’s most collectible whiskies. And as its fanbase continues to grow, we are more invested in our Distillery and our island community than ever before. We have built a new stillhouse to ensure the future of Ardbeg’s legendary smoky spirit, and we have recently invested in a well-known hotel on Islay, so we can create a world-class hospitality experience for residents and visitors alike. Here’s to the future of Ardbeg!”

Ardbeg’s Director of Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden, said: “Ardbeg The Rollercoaster is a unique opportunity for collectors to experience two very different tastes of Ardbeg’s heritage, and acquire a set of bottlings with an incredible story. The 1981 expression was made from some of the last malt ever to emerge from our maltings as Ardbeg teetered on the brink of closure. It is a beautiful combination of sweet and spicy sherried notes and hints of Ardbeg’s savoury side. Distilled soon after spirit flowed from the stills again, with a radically different malt, the 1989 is an equally singular Ardbeg. Classic notes of lime and vanilla combine with sea spray and very subtle, smoky tones. A snapshot of the contrasting spirits of those days, the time capsule whiskies of Ardbeg The Rollercoaster will go down in Ardbeg history.”

Whisky Expert and Writer, Charles Maclean, who tasted the whiskies with Dr Bill Lumsden, said: “The Rollercoaster’s two whiskies vividly embody the up-and-down fortunes of Ardbeg Distillery during the 1980s. With their rich historical provenance, intriguing stories and exceptional flavour, these rare, limited editions will be highly sought after by collectors.

“While these single malts are quite different to each other in taste and aroma, both are created from more lightly peated malt than the Ardbeg of today – and so have a gentler phenolic style. I find the 1981 whisky unusually mentholic and cooling, and the 1989 particularly elegant and reserved. Both are fascinating representations of highly significant years in Ardbeg’s history.”

Beautifully encased in a presentation box crafted from solid Scottish oak by renowned designer John Galvin, Ardbeg The Rollercoaster’s 143 sets will be offered to collectors and connoisseurs through the Moët Hennessy Private Client channel, across the world.

The Rollercoaster’s first whisky: Ardbeg Cask No.1 1981

This whisky was distilled 11th March 1981, from a rare union of malts. It was produced using a heavily peated malt (up to 110ppm) – some of the last ever made in Ardbeg’s own maltings – as well as very lightly peated malt, used to create “Kildalton-style” Ardbeg. This was produced at the Distillery owner’s maltings in Kilgour, Fife, in the east of Scotland, and only used at the Distillery from 1978-1981. This intriguing spirit was laid down bourbon barrels – some of the final casks filled before the Distillery closed on 25th March that year. The whisky was then transferred into a refill Oloroso sherry cask on 30th August 2006, to bring subtle sherried notes to its classically smoky style. It was bottled on 20th June 2023 at 47.3% ABV.

Tasting notes

Colour: Burnt Orange

Aroma: A beautiful combination of Brazil-nut-flavoured toffee, orange syrup, linseed oil, the gentlest hint of woodsmoke, some touches of grilled asparagus and pepper, and a soft but distinctively savoury note like sourdough bread. A few drops of water releases more toffee notes, a touch of Viennese coffee and some distant herbs.

Taste: A rich, warming and peppery mouthfeel leads into a symphony of incredible flavours – soft burnished leather, aniseed, toffee, demerara sugar, and a gentle tarry smoke flavour. Then the spices appear: clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, with some soft, sweet malty biscuity notes.

Finish: Soothing and gentle, goes on forever, with a balanced combination of dates, toffee, leather and creosote.

The Rollercoaster’s second whisky: Ardbeg Cask No.17 1989

Distilled on 6th December 1989, this whisky was among the first single malt to be laid down after Ardbeg re-opened in October that year. With malt now supplied by Port Ellen maltings at 30-35ppm to make it more suitable for blending, its spirit was much more lightly peated than had formerly been traditional for Ardbeg – or is today. From 1989-1996, production was intermittent, as Ardbeg only operated for two months each year. This spirit was initially laid down in bourbon barrels, and transferred into a refill bourbon cask on 11th August 1999, to enhance its gently peated character. It was bottled on 20th June 2023 at 45.3% ABV.

Tasting notes

Colour: Deep Gold

Aroma: Sooty and drying, with wax crayons, fennel, mustard seed and toasting bread, along with that most distinctive of Ardbeg aromas, like pine resin or smoked lime skins. A splash of water releases a creaminess, with a gentle touch of vanilla and smoked pear, along with some briny sea spray.

Taste: A creamy and effervescent texture is followed by a burst of aniseed toffee, hints of smoked popcorn, smoked paprika and gentle, soothing antiseptic lozenges.

Finish: Tarry smoke is present and beautifully integrated with sweet vanilla and Viennese coffee.

Ardbeg

Ardbeg prides itself on being The Ultimate Islay Malt Whisky. Established in 1815, Ardbeg is revered by connoisseurs around the world as the peatiest, smokiest and most complex of all the Islay malts. Despite its smokiness, Ardbeg is renowned for its delicious sweetness, a phenomenon that has affectionately become known as ‘the peaty paradox’. During the 1980s and 1990s, Ardbeg suffered from an uncertain future, and it was not until the brand was purchased by The Glenmorangie Company in 1997 that the Distillery was saved from extinction. Since then, the Distillery has risen like a phoenix and today Ardbeg is well-established as a niche, cult malt, with a passionate following. Today, Ardbeg is one of the world’s most highly awarded smoky single malt whiskies.

The Ardbeg Committee

The legacy of the whisky was safeguarded in 2000 by the formation of the Ardbeg Committee.  The Committee is made up of thousands of Ardbeg followers worldwide who are keen to ensure that “the doors of Ardbeg never close again”. Today there are more than 180,000 members of the Ardbeg Committee in over 130 countries.  Committee Members are regularly consulted on new bottlings and expressions and are offered exclusive Committee bottlings.  Members also receive invitations to special gatherings, tastings and events.  The Committee, chaired by Jackie Thomson, is free to join at ardbeg.com.

Ardbeg Rollercoaster’s presentation box

Designed and crafted by John Galvin Design, the wooden gift edition which houses this set of bottles is inspired by Ardbeg’s rollercoaster history. Its contemporary design has been created using a fusion of hand-crafted techniques and precision engineering. On the front of the gift box, made from Scottish oak, an undulating copper-coloured line reflects the track of a rollercoaster. It opens up to reveal an interior with details in copper and leather, reminiscent of a rollercoaster car – complete with the traditional bumper. Behind the bumper sit the two bottles, side by side, as if ready to begin a hair-raising journey at the funfair. Meanwhile, on Ardbeg’s classic green bottles, the dates 1981 and 1989 are playfully picked out in a rollercoaster track design. The stoppers are also copper in colour, with wavy lines evoking a rollercoaster motion. On each label, the outlook for Ardbeg at the time is depicted – on the 1981 is written: ‘The End Was Nigh’ and on the 1989 ‘A New Beginning’.

Ardbeg’s barley

Ardbeg malted its own heavily-peated barley on site until 1981 until the distillery was mothballed. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Distillery was also producing unpeated “Kildalton-style” Ardbeg, using unpeated malt from Kilgour Maltings in Fife. As a result, Ardbeg’s peating style was varied. When it re-opened in 1989, the Distillery began using barley malted at Port Ellen Maltings on Islay. Ardbeg uses the same maltings today, with malt created to its exact specifications.

Ardbeg’s Collectability

Rare Whisky 101 produces in-depth reports of the rare whisky market. In a recent report, its Collectors Ranking table shows Ardbeg as the second-most collectable whisky, equally weighting volume and value data for whisky sold in the UK at auction. https://www.rarewhisky101.com/intelligence

ABOUT BOWMORE®

For over 240 years, the Bowmore Distillery has been capturing the essence of Islay from the shores of its remote island home. Shaped by centuries of skill and tradition, Bowmore’s single malt harnesses the power of this time in every single drop, defined by the past and savoured in the present.

Time is defining at Bowmore® and we tirelessly harness the power of time to shape our whiskies. Our distillery’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of our fruity and smoky single malts. Today, we are amongst one of a few distilleries which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by a traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery.  Water for the whiskies is specially drawn from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones – the same Islay peat that fires the malt-drying kiln.

Bowmore® Distillery’s proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of its spirit and gives a hint of sea air to the character. The legendary Bowmore® No. 1 Vaults is where most of the whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault’s sea-facing wall.

Matured in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry, or claret, over time developing rich and mellow flavours until the expertise of our whisky makers deems them ready for bottling.  It is this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people, and tradition that makes Bowmore the exceptional single malt it is today.

Time is marked on each and every bottle of Bowmore, proudly and boldly as a marker of where and when each one’s journey began.  This is our story of time. This is Bowmore; the Art of Time since 1779.

The Perfect Fifth Introduces Oran Blended Scotch Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

The Perfect Fifth Introduces Oran Blended Scotch Whisky

Jim Murray, Famed Whisky Critic, Created Both Blends

NEW YORK (Nov. 16, 2023) – The Perfect Fifth, an American independent Scotch Whisky bottler known for its rare, ultra-premium single cask Scotch Whiskies, is introducing a new line, Oran, a blended Scotch Whisky created by whisky expert Jim Murray, author of “Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.”   Murray has long served as a behind-the-scenes blender for many distilleries world-wide, but his partnership with The Perfect Fifth is his first public foray into an official blending role with a company, allowing his 40 years of sensory experience as a whisky taster, blender, and evaluator to shine in his new position.

Murray designed Oran to be an “old school” blend recognizable to whisky lovers of the heyday of blended whisky some 100 years ago, Oran’s grain and malt components are created separately but ultimately combined as the perfect complement to one another.  Oran, which means “song” in Gaelic, is a harmonious blend of the finest grains and single malts, unveiling layers of flavor much like the musical layers in a melody.

“There is a temptation to disregard blended Scotch in this time of single malt, yet the blend of grain whisky and malt is a creation which offers myriad possibilities,” said Murray.  “The objective in the creation of Oran is to offer delicate complexity and finely tuned balance. I believe we have achieved that in the first two releases, and we look forward to creating additional bends in the future which showcase the same attributes.”

The first two releases, Blend No. 1 and Blend No. 2, are both 50-50-50 blends, 50 percent single malt Scotch Whisky, 50 percent single grain Scotch Whisky, and 50 percent alcohol by volume (ABV). Both blends are limited releases, containing only 465 bottles each.

A total of 11 different casks were used to make both blends. Some of the casks were split between both blends but with differing ratios. Blend No. 1 is composed exclusively of Ex-Bourbon casks.  Tasting notes for Blend No. 1 describe it as having a nose with the lightest of smokiness heralding the fruitier elements.  The taste has a beautiful mouth feel in which the malt and grains form juicy layers through which the spices easily permeate. The finish has a distinct chocolatey feel.

Blend No. 2 distinguishes itself with the addition of a sherried cask component.  It is described as having a sweet grassy and lush nose, followed by a salivating delivery with beautiful honeydew melon sweetness, giving the malt a pleasant softness.  The finish is described as being long and linear, with tingling spice.

“Throughout my travels to Scotland, I’ve always been touched by its beauty.  Not only the physical beauty in the landscapes but also the beauty in the craftsmanship of its whiskies and the flavor of its single malts,” said Karl Schoen, founder and chief executive officer, The Perfect Fifth.  “Oran is an extension of those experiences, meant to blend together the appreciation for the rugged beauty of the land with the homage to its whisky makers, united in perfect harmony.”

Oran Blend No. 1 and Blend No. 2 are available in limited quantities at retailers in New York, New Jersey and California. It is also available online at www.theperfectfifth.com.  Suggested retail pricing is $189 per 700 mL.

About The Perfect Fifth

The Perfect Fifth was created in 2019 by Karl Schoen, who was inspired by watching his family members toast milestones with Scotch Whisky as he grew up.  As Karl began his own exploration into the world of Scotch Whisky, he enjoyed finding stellar single cask bottlings and sharing them with others.  This led to the formation of The Perfect Fifth, where Karl and his brother Ben source the best quality whisky from all over Scotland.  Together they travel throughout Scotland, sampling cask after cask until they find those worthy to be selected for The Perfect Fifth. Few casks make the cut, which is why The Perfect Fifth releases are limited editions.  Like the musical interval, The Perfect Fifth releases consist of multiple layers, each one broad and deep, which when combined, make a beautiful assembly meant to be shared with family and friends.

Created specifically to be enjoyed during the coldest season of the year, these new bottlings are sure to evoke thoughts of crackling fireplaces, home-baked holiday treats, and the dreams of summer that keep us warm on the darkest and coldest days of winter.

“In Vermont, winter’s embrace can be especially long and cold,” remarked Nora Ganley-Roper, Lost Lantern Co-Founder. “We hope the whiskies in this collection, designed specifically for the season, will bring some extra warmth and joy to whiskey lovers during the chilly months ahead.”

Lost Lantern’s last release of 2023 includes four whiskies — two new additions to both the Blend Series and the Single Distillery Series — from a total of seven distillery partners: Cedar Ridge (IA), McCarthy’s (OR), Boulder Spirits (CO), Whiskey Del Bac (AZ), Santa Fe Spirits (NM), St. George Spirits (CA), and Kings County Distillery (NY), a new Lost Lantern partner.

The Winter Whiskey Wednesday collection will be available for purchase at the new Lost Lantern Tasting Room in Vergennes, VT and online at LostLanternWhiskey.com and Seelbachs.com beginning November 29th. It will also be available at select retailers in New York and California.

  • Lost Lantern Shadow (500 bottles): SRP $100
  • Lost Lantern Flame (400 bottles): SRP $100
  • Lost Lantern Mountain Meadow St. George Spirits Single Malt (600 bottles): SRP $150
  • Lost Lantern Brooklyn Bakery Kings County Distillery New York Straight Bourbon (396 bottles): SRP $100

All offerings are non-chill-filtered, have natural coloring, and feature transparent labeling highlighting the source distilleries.

Lost Lantern Co-Founder Adam Polonski said, “We are especially excited about the whiskies in our new collection because they were created purposely to warm up winter. Two are blends of smoked American single malts — one peated (Shadow), one mesquite (Flame) — and are perfect for long, cold winter nights, especially those in front of a fireplace or bonfire. Winter is also our favorite season for baking, and Brooklyn Bakery, our first release from the acclaimed Kings County Distillery, is an ideal pairing for wintry confections. Winter also has us thinking about warmer days ahead, and our latest collaboration with St. George Spirits is truly the essence of California sunshine. After a cold, gray day, this reminds us that sunny days are always around the corner.”

LOST LANTERN WINTER 2023 COLLECTION

Lost Lantern Shadow

Distilled by Boulder Spirits (CO), Cedar Ridge (IA), McCarthy’s (OR)

(500 Btls | 126.3 Proof) SRP: $100

Smoked whiskies take many forms. Lost Lantern Shadow is a blend of peated American single malts that together evoke the shadowy depths of whiskey enjoyment. It includes peated single malts from Iowa, Colorado, and Oregon. The result is a blend of rich oak flavor, deep smoke, with notes of roasted blackberries and plums.

Lost Lantern Flame

Distilled by Santa Fe Spirits (NM), Whiskey Del Bac (AZ)

(400 Btls | 113.9 Proof) SRP: $100

This is a blend of smoked American whiskies that together evoke brightness and warmth. Lost Lantern Flame brings together mesquite-smoked single malts from Whiskey Del Bac in Arizona and Santa Fe Spirits in New Mexico to create a warm, bright, and smoky whiskey. A brilliant flame with notes of charred oranges, chili chocolate, and smoked meats.

Lost Lantern Mountain Meadow St. George Spirits Single Malt

(600 Bottles | 107 Proof): SRP $150

St. George Spirits, the oldest craft distillery in the U.S., creates exceptional spirits with a true sense of artistry. Lost Lantern worked closely with the St. George team to create a whiskey that embodies the warmth, bounty, and freshness of California. This is a blend of four truly unique casks. Incredibly fresh and piney, it has hints of Meyer lemon zest, white pepper, lemon verbena, cinnamon sticks, and jasmine tea. Mountain Meadow has a warm and welcoming mouthfeel and a long, gentle finish.

Lost Lantern Brooklyn Bakery Kings County Distillery New York Straight Bourbon Whiskey

(396 bottles | 133 Proof): SRP $100

Kings County Distillery, the oldest distillery in New York City, creates some of the country’s most acclaimed and sought-after whiskies using New York-grown grains. Lost Lantern Brooklyn Bakery is a marriage of eight different barrels of 5- and 6-year-old Kings County bourbons that were blended to create a powerful, sweet, and spicy straight bourbon. It has rich dark chocolate notes, with hints of pecan pie, graham cracker, blackberry cobbler, and cherry tart – reminiscent of a Brooklyn bakery on a cold winter day.

NEW BOOK REVEALS 1920s WHISKY SECRETS AND INSPIRES FUTURE NEW RELEASES – Scotch Whisky News

NEW BOOK REVEALS 1920s WHISKY SECRETS AND INSPIRES FUTURE NEW RELEASES

A historic guide to making Scotch whisky in the early 20th century has been republished by James Eadie Ltd, with whiskies inspired by the book to be released over the next decade.

The Distillation of Whisky, 1927-1931 is one of the few available practical first-hand resources dating from Scotch whisky’s early history and illuminates lost whisky-making techniques from the interwar years.

To bring these lost whiskies to life, James Eadie Ltd has collaborated with six of Scotland’s most innovative whisky distilleries to produce spirits inspired by the book.

These whiskies – from Ardnamurchan, Dornoch, Holyrood, InchDairnie, Lochlea and ‘An Unnamed Farm Distillery in the Heart of the Kingdom of Fife’ – will be distilled between Autumn 2023 and Spring 2024, and will be released over the course of the next decade.

Dave Broom and Alan Winchester, two renowned authorities on whisky have both written introductions for the volume.

Dave Broom, whisky expert and author, commented:

“Whisky’s history is a jigsaw puzzle where many of the pieces have been lost.

“By giving detailed insights into whisky production at the start of the 20th century, this book provides a greater understanding of what ‘old-style’ whisky would have tasted like. Many myths have exploded as a result. It is a must-read for distillers, blenders, and whisky lovers.”

Alan Winchester, former Master Distiller at The Glenlivet, said:

“These fascinating articles shine a spotlight into what was going on 100 years ago.

“Some practices may seem strange now, but others still continue. This contradicts and challenges the views that innovation didn’t exist, and everything was traditional.”

The publication of The Distillation of Whisky, 1927-1931  follows on from James Eadie Ltd’s 2022 volume The Distilleries of Great Britain & Ireland, 1922-1929, which is considered to be the earliest photographic survey of the Scotch & Irish whisky industries.

Working with the British Library’s digitisation team, The Distillation of Whisky includes all 130+ images from the original publications, reproduced at ultra-high definition.

Leon Kuebler, Brand Director at James Eadie Ltd, said:

“We were overwhelmed by the positive feedback to The Distilleries of Great Britain & Ireland, 1922-1929.

“But one of the most common queries we received was ‘How did they make it?’ So we were delighted to come across The Distillation of Whisky in the British Library’s archives, which gives a remarkably comprehensive answer to this question.”

The Distillation of Whisky, 1927-1931 will be released on Tuesday 14 November as a first edition of 1,000 copies.  It is available to purchase exclusively at Scotland’s leading specialist whisky retailer, Royal Mile Whiskies.

Arthur Motley, Managing Director at Royal Mile Whiskies, said:

“I am so excited to be selling this book, as well as the distilled spirits that are inspired by it.

“A fascination with the past is bound up in whisky culture, but all too rarely does historical research affect what we do now. The joy of this publication is that it will change some of the bottles on our future shelves.”

About James Eadie Ltd

First established in 1854, James Eadie Ltd is an independent Scotch whisky blender and bottler. Revived in 2016 by the founder’s great-great-grandson, Rupert Patrick, the company is building a reputation as a supplier of top quality specialist whiskies. James Eadie exports its single malts to sixteen international markets, as well as widespread distribution in the United Kingdom through specialist retailers.

James Eadie Ltd also owns a blended Scotch whisky brand, Trade Mark “X”. Dormant since its last bottling in the late 1940s, this brand was revived in October 2017, when Master Blender Norman Mathison used his fifty years’ blending experience to re-master this once famous Scotch. A key feature in this revival has been the discovery of the company’s original whisky ledgers from the mid to late 19th Century, which revealed a blend made from some of Scotland’s finest whiskies, then and now. Only whiskies from distilleries listed in the founder’s ledgers have been used.

James Eadie Ltd is a member of the Scotch Whisky Association, whose role is to advance the global interests and profile of Scotch whisky.

Bourbon Boom Expands Deeper into Green River Area

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky Distillers’ Association today announced Western Kentucky Distilling Co. in Ohio County as the newest member of the non-profit trade group that unites and leads Kentucky’s signature Bourbon and distilled spirits industry.

Located in Beaver Dam, Western Kentucky Distilling Co. broke ground in 2022 by Jacob Call and J.D. Edwards. The distillery offers contract distilling, with plans for signature brands and a visitor’s center down the road.

The distillery began production in July and had its grand opening earlier this month.

“Jacob and J.D. are respected industry members with deep roots in Kentucky,” KDA President Eric Gregory said. “It’s great to see their warm welcome in Ohio County, which already is benefiting from the jobs and millions in investment that Western Kentucky Distilling brings.”

Master Distiller Call was born in Bardstown and is both an 8th Generation Kentuckian and 8th Generation Distiller. Company President Edwards was born and raised in nearby Owensboro and after several years in the industry is now chasing his entrepreneurial dream.

“We’re humbled and excited to be a part of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association and unite with our fellow distillers to promote and protect Kentucky’s rich Bourbon heritage and legacy,” Call said.

“In addition to being 100% Kentucky owned, we’re also 100% Kentucky sourced and built with all of our distilling equipment coming from the Commonwealth and plans to use all locally grown corn in our products,” Edwards said.

“Bourbon is a vital industry in our state and we’re proud to join the KDA. We’re so thankful to the local community who have been so supportive and look forward to continued growth in the region.”

At the heart of the $30 million investment is a 36-inch copper still, complemented by copper condensers, a doubler and 15 state-of-the-art fermenters producing up to 50,000 barrels of Bourbon and rye whiskey each year.

The first official distillery in Ohio County is working with contract brands such as Hemingway Rye Whiskey and is already looking at expansion due to the expected continued growth of Kentucky Bourbon, a major export and thriving symbol of Bluegrass craftsmanship and tradition.
