20 May 2009, Edinburgh:  Award-winning Glengoyne Highland Single Malt has successfully secured an exclusive presence at Europe’s largest and most renowned audio-visual event, the HIGH END show in Munich (21-24 May),  thanks to a unique partnership with fellow Scottish brand, Tannoy.

Over 250,000 attendees are expected at the four-day HIGH END show, which will premier the latest technology in high-quality home entertainment to all connoisseurs and enthusiasts of excellent sound and perfect pictures.

The only whisky brand present at the event, Glengoyne will host an exclusive VIP stylish bar for Tannoy, with brand ambassador on hand to provide guided tastings and educate visitors in the art of whisky making and blending. Glengoyne will also be presenting its latest Limited Edition, Glengoyne 40 Years Old, the distillery’s oldest, most valuable, and very best Single Malt ever produced in its 175 year history.

Iain Weir, Marketing Director for Ian Macleod Distillers, brand owners of Glengoyne, commented: “We are thrilled to be the only whisky brand attending such a prestigious event with Tannoy.  Glengoyne and Tannoy share a common ground as successful independent Scottish businesses, who have built a strong reputation in the UK and abroad.  We also share a very similar premium customer base and I am sure that working together will help us reach new audiences by reinforcing our key messages and common objectives.”

HIGH END is the first outing of what is expected to be a highly successful and mutually beneficial partnership, introducing new audiences to both brands, with planning for future events already underway.

Owned by independent family company, Ian Macleod Distillers, Glengoyne, Scotland’s most beautiful distillery, has been producing its unique and complex, Highland Single Malt Whisky for over 175 years. Using methods passed down for generations, Glengoyne has nurtured and perfected the art of producing the authentic taste of Malt Whisky, untainted by peat smoke.

The result is a portfolio of multi-award winning whiskies including the core 10, 17 and 21 Years Old range, as well as special limited edition Single Malts, released each year.

Founded in 1926, Tannoy is one of the world’s leading specialists in Residential Audio, Installation Speakers and Studio Monitor. Its newest addition in residential hi-fi line up, Definition will be launched at the HIGH END event.

Glengoyne 40 Year Old
——————————————————————————–

UK. For the first time in its 175-year history, Glengoyne Distillery is releasing its oldest, most valuable Highland Single Malt: the Glengoyne 40 Year Old.

The natural strength 40 Year Old Highland Single Malt is regarded by the distillery to be one of the finest whiskies it has ever produced.

Ian Macleod Distillers Marketing Director Iain Weir said: “This is a world class, once in a lifetime bottling. It was essential that the design and presentation of the Glengoyne 40 Year Old Highland Single Malt be a true reflection of its outstanding quality, and reinforces its position as one of the top luxury Limited Edition Single Malts available in the market today.

“The 40 Year Old Single Malt captures the pure essence of Glengoyne, from its heritage and craftsmanship through to its exceptional and unpeated ‘Real Taste of Malt’. It is a joy to open casks after four decades and find such great balance between malt and Still. It doesn’t get any better than this,” Weir added.

The 40 Year Old expression is contained in a hand-blown Glencairn Crystal decanter, each of which has an individual number engraved in the base, and is decorated by an etching of the Scottish distillery, reflecting up through the malt itself.

The decanter is housed in a lacquered, piano-finished, solid oak wood presentation box, complete with gold plates on the front and hand-stitched cream leather interior.

An accompanying cream leather and gold foil traditionally bound book, signed by Distillery Manager Robbie Hughes, provides tasting notes and detailed background on Glengoyne’s history as an independent distillery since 1833.

Just 250 crystal decanters will be available from specialist whisky outlets and in travel retail worldwide, retailing at £3,000.

Springbank 40 Year Old
——————————————————————————–

Ian Macleod Distillers is also launching a rare, limited-edition Springbank 40 Year Old from its Chieftain’s Single Malt Whisky collection.

Distilled in 1968 at the Springbank Distillery, Campbeltown, only 398 bottles of the natural strength, unchill-filtered whisky will be available.

It is the last, oldest and the best Springbank cask available from the current Chieftain’s collection, says the distiller.

The bottle is presented in a silver leather-lined, solid oak box. Two silver plaques on the front display all the individual bottle details, as does the certificate of authenticity scroll, personally signed by Antony McCallum-Caron, Chieftain’s Rare Malt Manager.

The limited-edition release of 398 bottles is available globally in travel retail at an RRP of £800. Commenting on the release Iain Weir said: “Chieftain’s Springbank 40 Year Old is a truly rare and exceptional whisky which we are incredibly proud to include in our collection.

“The combination of age and the limited release of 398 bottles mean this will be a real collector’s item, with its unparalleled quality making it a joy to drink.”

SUNTORY WORLD PREMIER LAUNCH OF HIBIKI 12 YO WHISKY IN LONDON

Submitted by: Voice PR
Thursday, 14 May 2009

——————————————————————————–
London, May 14, 2009 – Suntory will release the latest expression of its much-honoured Hibiki brand when the Hibiki 12 Year old premium blended whisky has its world premier launch in London on May 14.

The Hibiki premium blended range has gathered 15 gold medals and trophies in less than five years, including the title of The World’s Best Blended Whisky for the 30 YO Hibiki not once, but twice, in 2007 and 2008.

The introduction of Hibiki 12 year old adds to the line up of Hibiki expressions by offering whisky connoisseurs what promises to be a new favourite in the very popular 12 year old category.

London was chosen as the stage for the world launch due to the growing interest and demand for Suntory premium whiskies in the UK and to further support the Hibiki brand positioning on the world stage, by introducing it to whisky connoisseurs in an international capital.

Aged in Japanese plum liqueur ‘Umeshu’ casks, Hibiki 12 year old is sweet to the taste and has a velvety texture and fruity aromas unlike any other premium blended whisky. Blended from a variety of malt and grain whiskies, Hibiki 12 year old is filtered through bamboo charcoal to deliver a spirit that is silky smooth on the palate.

In the Hibiki roll of honour, the Hibiki 17 YO has won two gold medals, the 21 YO four gold medals and the Hibiki 30 year old two golds and four trophies plus its two titles in 2007 and 2008 of Best Blended Whisky in the World. These awards simply emphasise the quality behind the Hibiki 12 year old.

Seiichi Koshimizu, Suntory’s chief blender and the first Japanese representative to be appointed a judge at the International Spirits Challenge, says: “Our goal was to create a uniquely Japanese whisky that is mellower and smoother than any other premium 12 year old whisky in the world.”

He adds: “Hibiki is a niche brand and we understand that not many people can afford to buy such premium whiskies. By adding Hibiki 12 year-old to the range we seek to make
the brand more affordable to whisky enthusiasts and to increase awareness of the marvellous flavours of Japanese whisky”.

Bottled at 43% ABV, Hibiki 12 year old tasting notes describe the amber to gold coloured whisky has having a nose of plums, raspberries, pineapple, honey and vanilla.
The palate is long and smooth with a long, clean, sweet and spicy finish.

Tomoo Akaike, Suntory Business Development Director, says: “The role call of honour speaks of the great quality of this amazing whisky. It is going to appeal to whisky lovers who appreciate the care and attention that go into creating a new expression. We anticipate great interest in Hibiki 12 YO among whisky specialists.”

The presentation in an elegant 24 facet decanter recalling the original 24 seasons in the Japanese year, finished with a traditional ‘Echizen Washi’ label

Hibiki 12 year old will be priced at between £39.99 and £42.99 a bottle and will be available from whisky specialist retailers across the UK.

The Hibiki Premium Blended Range is distributed in the UK by Cellar Trends . For sales enquiries contact: 01283 217703 www.cellartrends.co.uk.

MCTEARS AUCTIONEERS-NEWS RELEASE

7th May 2009

SIZE ISN’T EVERYTHING AS RARE DRAM GOES UNDER THE HAMMER

One of the world’s rarest whisky miniatures is set to be the star attraction at an auction of rare and collectable whisky in Glasgow on 13th May.
The miniature of Springbank, which was distilled in 1919 and comes with a letter of authenticity, is expected to fetch around £1200 when it goes under the hammer at the McTears Homecoming auction, making it one of the most desirable drams in the world.
“When it arrived at the auction house it was packaged in a light bulb box and I don’t think the owner quite appreciated the significance of the bottle,” explains McTears whisky specialist, Andrew Bell.  “When I opened it and saw the date I knew we had something special on our hands.
“There is no doubt that this is one of the rarest whisky miniatures ever to go to auction.  It is a fantastic example in its own right but having the letter of authenticity will give it an extra edge when it goes under the hammer.”
In addition to the Springbank miniature, the 500 lots in the sale will include a host of extremely rare examples of Scotland’s liquid gold, and McTears estimate that the auction could generate sales in excess of £100k.
Some of the higher profile examples include a bottle of Highland Park reserve from 1902 which is expected to go for between £1800 and £2000 while a Laphroaig Reserve from 1903 could get a similar price.
Following on from its smaller, but rarer, sibling, a full bottle of 50 year old Springbank could fetch £2200.
“In these troubled financial times it is interesting to note the number of people who are investing in whisky,” added Andrew.  “We have seen a marked rise in the number of collectors buying rare single malts at auction and we would estimate that there were approximately £20 million worth of sales globally last year.
“If you look at auction prices over the past few years the figures show a better return on investment than many other sectors.  I would say that investors are not interested in the bottom end of the market but are looking at the more expensive and potentially expensive bottles.”
All the big name distilleries will be represented in the auction with fine examples of The Macallan, The Dalmore, Talisker, Highland Park and Bowmore going under the hammer.  There will also be a selection of more obscure bottlings including a Bell’s Decanter to celebrate the Queen Mothers 90th birthday and a specially commissioned Scottish Parliament single malt decanter.
“There is no other product in the world which better encapsulates the essence of Scotland than whisky so it is fantastic to have such a fine collection of the water of life going to auction in the year of Homecoming,” added Andrew Bell.
“McTears has a reputation for selling some of the finest whiskies in the world and I am delighted to say that our Homecoming auction will keep that reputation intact.”
Anyone looking for more details on the auction or who would like advice on the sale, valuation or purchase of whisky, should log on to http://www.mctears.co.uk/ or contact Andrew Bell on 0141 810 2880.
The Homecoming Scotland Rare & Collectable Whisky Auction will take place at McTears Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers, Meiklewood Gate, Glasgow on Wednesday 13th May at 10.30am.

Kilchoman Distillery to Auction a Piece of History from Whisky Cask No.1

Pure Shores PR
06/05/2009
Region : Argyll and the Islands

With its very first single malt being launched on 9th September this year, Kilchoman Distillery on the western isle of Islay is giving water of life connoisseurs an opportunity of a whisky lifetime.

On the 28th May, Kilchoman Distillery will auction one bottle of the three year old malt out of the very first cask that was filled in December 2005. The limited edition bottle will have a unique design and will be the only one of its kind. It is set to be a dream come true for whisky collectors and fans of Kilchoman.

The auction takes place at Kilchoman Distillery’s Open Day on Thursday 28th May at 12.30pm, during Feis Ile, the Islay Festival of Malt & Music.  All proceeds of the auction will go to local Islay charities.

Anthony Wills, Founder & Managing Director of Kilchoman Distillery said: “We are looking forward to welcoming people from all over the world through the doors of Kilchoman Distillery during the festival. We have a very exciting year ahead, making history in the whisky industry and across the world.”

He added: “We are delighted to auction the limited edition bottle of our very first single malt to one lucky person. It is an excellent opportunity to take home a piece of Kilchoman History and we hope it will raise a considerable amount of money for local charities.”

The much anticipated single malt has been getting seals of approval from a very young age. The one month old Kilchoman spirit has received a remarkable score of 94 out of 100 in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2008, rating it as a “superstar whisky that gives us all a reason to live!” In April 2009, the two year old spirit sold out on the first day of the Limburg Whisky Fair in Germany.

Kilchoman Distillery prides itself in taking whisky back to its roots and is the first distillery to be built on Islay for 124 years.  A visit to Kilchoman Distillery gives everyone the opportunity to see all that is best in the grass-roots traditions of malt whisky distilling – from barley to bottle. The distillery location, Rockside Farm is said to grow the best malting barley on the island.

Kilchoman Distillery is accepting telephone and email bids 30 minutes prior to the auction. Please telephone 01496 850011 or email anthony.wills@kilchomandistillery.com.   For more information on Kilchoman Distillery, announcements and events please visit www.kilchomandistillery.com.

Kilchoman Facts:

Kilchoman’s first single malt will be released on 9th September 2009.   Kilchoman is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland with an annual production of 90,000 litres of alcohol. Kilchoman is one of only six distilleries to carry out traditional floor maltings, but the key difference at Kilchoman is that the barley is grown on the farm at the distillery, whereas other distilleries purchase barley from around the country. 100 tonnes of malting barley is grown and malted at the distillery representing 30% of their annual production.   The balance of malt is purchased from the Port Ellen Maltings on the island. 80% of Kilchoman’s annual production is filled into a combination of fresh bourbon barrels from Buffalo Trace Distillery, Kentucky and refill casks and 20% into fresh oloroso sherry butts.

The Glenlivet Nàdurra’s Natural Charms Shine at Spirit of Speyside Whisky Awards

Chivas Brothers
06/05/2009
Region : All

The Glenlivet Nàdurra, the 16 Year Old non-chill filtered expression from The Glenlivet, has been selected as the best 13 to 20 Year Old Single Malt Whisky at the annual Spirit of Speyside Festival for the second year running. The award is the latest in a series of medals already won by The Glenlivet range this year.

As the brand that defined the Speyside style of whisky, The Glenlivet has enjoyed spectacular success in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Awards, winning a category award every year since the creation of the awards in 2005. Known as ‘the single malt that started it all’, The Glenlivet boasted the first licensed distillery in Glenlivet in 1824.

Neil Macdonald, Brand Director for malts at Chivas Brothers, comments: “Whilst we have enjoyed great success at all the major international awards, it is especially gratifying to win at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Awards as the region is the home of The Glenlivet. The fact that the awards are decided by whisky lovers who travel from all over the world to the Festival is testament to the enduring popularity of the single malt that started it all.”

The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Award winners were voted for by visitors to the 10th annual Spirit of Speyside Festival based on a shortlist selected from more than 40 Speyside whiskies by a panel of leading whisky experts and members of the Scottish Parliament.

Introduced at the 2005 Festival with the support of Whisky Magazine, the
Spirit of Speyside Awards have developed into a prestigious feature of the Spirit of Speyside Festival over the last three years. Celebrating its 10th anniversary and the Year of Homecoming, this year’s Festival is the most successful to date with a record number of whisky enthusiasts coming to the region.

The Glenlivet Nàdurra (Gaelic for ‘natural’) 16 Year Old single malt is non-chill filtered and is a smooth and fruity Speyside single malt with a softly rich, floral aroma combined with added richness and creaminess devolved from maturation in first-fill ex bourbon casks.

KAZAKHSTAN OPENING UP FOR BENRIACH

It’s an exporting coup for the Larbert-based BenRiach Distillery Company.

Formerly part of USSR but now independent, Kazakhstan is one of the new but unexpected export markets identified by BenRiach that’s ripe for development.

The republic, the most economically advanced of the “stans”, is in Central Asia, to the south of Russia and extending east from the Caspian Sea to the Altai mountains.

It’s largely known, not for whisky consumption, but for launching rockets, its oil and the antics of the pseudo-Kazakh Borat Sagdiyev created by Sacha Baron Cohen.

In the new consignment, worth some £60,000, are malts ranging from twelve to forty years.

Billy Walker, the industry veteran and MD of The BenRiach Distillery Company, explained: “Kazakhstan, the world’s ninth-biggest country, appeared on our radar because it’s a commodity-rich country with a secular government and a population of some twenty million amongst whom is a significant percentage of wealthy citizens.

“They’re interested in both the standard range and our de-luxe items. In addition, it acts as a distribution hub for its neighbours Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kurgyzstan and Tajikistan.

“Parts of the country have an almost European feel with smart hotels, chic boutiques and lots of BMWs and Mercedes.

“We’ve found there’s a strong but relatively unstructured independent retail presence. Wholesale is developing, mainly in Almaty and Astana, and we have an excellent importer in MPCC Aldi Ltda – incidentally there’s no relationship with the supermarket of the same name.”

The first order was for 500 cases and three months ago BenRiach arranged a formal launch of its offerings in the old capital Almaty.

“They liked the first batch so much they wanted more,” said Billy. “When you consider the growing number of clubs and restaurants and both young and old people with increasing disposable income you start to see the potential and why it and other former Soviet states become very interesting territories for us.”

A few words from Raymond of Bladnoch

“Picked up 5 casks of Bladnoch today at Blackgrange near Stirling. Not the most cost effective way if you put much value on your time but I had bought them quite a while ago and they were incurring rental charges. It was a nice day and unusually for me, I was happy to have a wee drive and I also wanted to see what must be Diageo’s largest warehouses.
When you enter these warehouse complexes you stop at the gatehouse and read the instruction sheet and sign that you’ve read it, leave your mobile phone and put on a high vis vest. You are given a road layout map…. a large grid pattern of warehouses and roads that seem as wide as motorways. If there are no workmen in sight at the warehouse you’re uplifting from, each warehouse has an outside wall telephone and you can phone the gatehouse and they send a forklift truck operator. These are racked warehouses and the casks are racked 10 or 11 high, a lot of alcohol and a lot of angels share floating around and certainly Diageo gives the impression of being well run and very security conscious. They use a sort of bar-code reader to identify casks being dispatched off the premises and this is entered on to the computer at the end of each day. I was interested in these instruments, apparently they cost about £4,500. Apparently they have to be very low voltage to avoid sparks, but you obviously need the very expensive computers that accompany them. You can see why they don’t permit photography, if Diageo is paying out considerable sums to prevent it’s own staff causing potential accidents, they are certainly not going to allow any member of the public, (or white-van men like me) to take photos.

Interestingly, as with the entire industry, there has been a considerable slow down in warehouse removals during the last 6 months. They usually are working flat out and have between 60 and 80 part time staff all of whose jobs have gone now.
The very friendly lady at the security gatehouse has a holiday caravan at Creetown (pronounced Creeton) near Bladnoch, so has promised she’s going to drop in and visit us one of these days. It’s always wise to keep in friendly terms with the key work force and that’s not always the boss.

It was a lovely warm day here in S.W.Scotland and we stopped at the seafront at Girvan for a bacon roll and a cup of tea. The recent heavy seas have deposited long rows of seaweed about two foot high which gave it a real seaside smell. Looking out to sea at Ailsa Craig, the extinct volcano which is known as Paddy’s Milestone because it’s a prominent obstacle in the sea between Ireland and Glasgow … really beautiful and relaxing”.

To our many friends all over the world we would like to say “Thank You” for your continued support of The Spirit of the Lowlands.
