J.Mattingly 1845 Distillery Gives Back to Veterans with

Two Commemorative Bourbon Releases

Tenth Mountain Division and POW/MIA Veterans Honored with Bottles Launches July 3

FRANKFORT, KY (June 27, 2024) – J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery, created by Jeff Mattingly, a descendant of distilling pioneer John Graves Mattingly, is honoring military veterans with the release of two limited edition bourbons – 10th Mountain Division Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey and POW/MIA Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey.  Both bourbons are limited editions that go on sale at the Distillery in Frankfort on July 3rd, and are available now for pre-order online.

Only 310 bottles of each expression are available for purchase. A portion of sales from each bottle will go towards Kentucky area Gold Star families, through the nonprofits Three Rangers Foundation and Good Skies for the Good Guys and Gals.

Details for each bourbon are as follows:

The 10th Mountain Division Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey is a blend of seven-year-old barrels bottled at 116 proof.  The nose consists of seasoned oak, mellow baking spice, smokiness, almonds and cashews.  On the palate, the bourbon is nice and viscous, with caramel and vanilla sweetness up front.  Mid palate is characterized by cashews and almonds with nice barrel spice notes.  The finish is mid-length, marked by a return of the caramel sweetness, more seasoned oak, and a small hint of the malted barley.

The POW/MIA Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey is a blend of five-year-old barrels bottled at 126 proof.  Notes of caramel and crème brulee, along with apricot and plum can be found on the nose.  The palate has a full-bodied texture, giving notes of dark chocolate nibs and roasted peanuts.  There are slight notes of oak spice in the middle.  The finish is long-lasting, with a return of the maple and caramel sweetness, and notes of stone fruit, particularly apple and pear.

Pricing is $155 for each 750 mL bottle with $20 from the sales of the 10th Mountain Division Bourbon going towards Three Rangers Foundation and $20 from the sales of the POW/MIA Bourbon going toward the Good Skies for the Good Guys and Gals nonprofit.

About J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery

The Mattingly family has been synonymous with distilling in Kentucky for more than two centuries, having a hand in the development of at least nine separate distilleries in the Commonwealth, and with connections to some of the most illustrious names in the distilling industry, including George Garvin Brown, the Willetts and the Samuels.

It all started in 1845, with John Graves Mattingly’s first distillery in Marion County, Kentucky, Registered Distillery #2.  Many historians today believe his distillery was the first registered distillery in Kentucky.

In 2010 Jeff Mattingly took up the family mantle and started his own craft bourbon business.  Today, Jeff’s son Cameron has joined the team as Vice President of Production, continuing the legacy into the latest generation for J. Mattingly Distillery 1845 in Frankfort, Kentucky. Together father and son offer their proprietary double staving process as well as a custom bourbon blending experience unparalleled in the spirits industry, available on-site in Frankfort or online at https://jmattingly1845.com/build-a-bottle/

Announcing the World’s First Sugar Kelp Infused Peat-Smoked Whisky – Canadian Whisky News

BC Businesses Collaborate to Create World’s First Sugar Kelp Infused Peat-Smoked Whisky

Macaloney’s Island Distillery Crafts a Unique Whisky, Merging the Terroir of Vancouver Island with the Merroir of Sustainable Seaweed Cultivation

[Vancouver Island, BC] – Macaloney’s Island Distillery announces the inaugural release of the world’s first-ever sugar kelp infused peat-smoked whisky. This groundbreaking whisky, produced in limited quantities, is set to make waves in the whisky community with its unique blend of maritime and smoky flavours, while showcasing a remarkable collaboration between BC and Washington State businesses. The newmake spirit, from which this whisky was matured, has already garnered global acclaim by winning ‘World’s Best’ in blind tastings by industry-experienced judges at the prestigious World Whisky Awards in London, UK. This accolade underscores the exceptional quality and craftsmanship that Macaloney’s is known for.The limited-edition whisky can be purchased from the distillery for $109.99 per bottle.

The innovative infusion of sugar kelp, a type of brown seaweed, chosen for its fresh maritime aromas and sweet smoke has been sustainably farmed along the coast of British Columbia by Cascadia Seaweed, in partnership with coastal First Nations. Seaweed needs only the sea and sunlight to thrive, and its growth enhances local ocean ecosystems. The team at Cascadia Seaweed is dedicated to cultivating their own seaweed and harvesting solely from what they grow. They focus on transforming their crops into agricultural products and proudly support collaborations with other local businesses when opportunities arise.

Dr. Graeme Macaloney, the mastermind behind this unique whisky, revived traditional peat-smoking methods by studying under experts in his ancestral home of Islay, Scotland. The peat used in this process is sourced from Washington State, reflecting a unique Canada-USA collaboration and the spirit of innovation that defines Macaloney’s Island Distillery.

This inaugural release is matured in Dr. Jim Swan’s Portuguese red wine Shave-Toast-Rechar barriques, adding layers of red berry, caramel-toffee sweetness, and deep oak notes to the whisky’s creamy-velvety mouth-feel, juicy malted barley, and tropical fruit profile. The peat and sugar-kelp infusion introduces bonfire, burning heather, sweet smokiness, and pronounced maritime notes, finishing with a hint of salt. This unique whisky embodies both the terroir of Macaloney’s Island whisky and the Pacific Northwest, and the merroir of Cascadia Seaweed. Terroir refers to the complete natural environment in which the whisky is produced, including soil, topography, and climate, imparting a distinct taste and flavour to the whisky. Merroir, derived from the French word for sea, describes the local conditions in which seaweed is raised. This collaborative whisky marries the two, blending the distinctive elements of land and sea to create an unparalleled sensory experience.

The launch of this sugar kelp infused peated whisky also marks the second release of Macaloney’s exploration of ‘terroir’, trademarked as ‘The Peat Project’. Whisky enthusiasts will now have the opportunity to compare this innovative expression with existing Peat Project whiskies, setting the stage for future comparisons with Scottish-Islay peat and Vancouver Island peat.

Heaven Hill Distillery Announces Launch of Heaven Hill Grain to Glass – Bourbon Whiskey News

Heaven Hill Distillery Announces Launch of Heaven Hill Grain to Glass

Includes three different expressions with unique mashbills: Bourbon, Wheated Bourbon and Rye Whiskey

Bardstown, Ky. (June 19, 2024) – Heaven Hill Distillery announced today the highly-anticipated launch of Heaven Hill Grain to Glass. This latest addition to the Heaven Hill family is a collection of Kentucky Whiskeys that highlight Heaven Hill’s long-standing commitment to quality, sustainability, and craft. The initial launch features three new mashbills which include a Bourbon Whiskey, Wheated Bourbon Whiskey and Rye Whiskey expression.

The craft nature of this unique line of Whiskeys starts at the very beginning – the seed. The idea for the line began over 8 years ago as the brainchild of Heaven Hill Executive Chairman Max Shapira. Max’s passion for quality and transparency in whiskey-making lead to a partnership with seed company Beck’s Hybrids – a fellow family-owned and lead operation based in Indiana since 1937. Each year, our Master Distiller works with Beck’s Hybrids to hand select a unique corn seed varietal that has specific attributes desirable for Heaven Hill Grain to Glass, one of which is choosing seed which is best suited for growth in Central Kentucky.  The chosen corn seed varietal is then grown by Peterson Farms on one of two sites in Nelson County, one of which is directly across the street from Heaven Hill’s Bardstown facility. Peterson Farms, a multi-generational family farming company, has been entrusted to take the corn seed varietal and cultivate it into healthy grain that goes into the Heaven Hill Grain to Glass mashbills.  Since its founding in 1935, Heaven Hill has prided itself on crafting the highest quality Kentucky Whiskeys. Heaven Hill Grain to Glass honors this legacy and the cherished partnerships which were built on handshakes, not contracts.

“Over the course of the nearly 90 years, since the founding of Heaven Hill by my Dad and his brothers, we have always been cognizant of viewing our business from the long term, developing products that fit into this broad vision,” said Heaven Hill Executive Chairman Max Shapira. “Heaven Hill Grain to Glass incorporates everything our long history and heritage brings to our producing what we believe is the most unique, transparent offering that we have brought to market in our entire history. And that is saying a lot.”

The Bourbon and Wheated Bourbon Whiskeys feature mashbills with higher secondary grain content than Heaven Hill’s traditional Bourbon mashbill and Wheated Bourbon mashbill. Bottled at 107 proof, the Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey expression is comprised of 52% corn, 35% rye and 13% malted barley. Bottled at 121 proof, the Kentucky Straight Wheated Bourbon Whiskey expression is made with 52% corn, 35% wheat and 13% malted barley. The Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey expression is bottled at 123.2, the only barrel proof expression of the series. It also features a higher rye content than Heaven Hill’s traditional Rye Whiskey mashbill consisting of 63% rye, 24% corn and 13% malted barley. The distillates have been aged over six years at Heaven Hill’s Cox’s Creek rickhouse site. Each product is non-chill filtered and bottled at the ideal proof to allow the characteristics of each unique mashbill to shine.

“Working with Beck’s and Peterson Farms to create Grain to Glass has been an incredible experience,” said Master Distiller Conor O’Driscoll. “We’re proud to have crafted an innovative product – taking it from seed to aged liquid – while still remaining true to the values and legacy of Heaven Hill Distillery.”

The focus on transparency in the Heaven Hill Grain to Glass line extends beyond its local ingredients. The label on each bottle features details of the specific corn seed varietal utilized from Beck’s Hybrids, the unique mashbill, as well as the distillation and released years. The illustrations include a blueprint of Bernheim Distillery, along with custom designs depicting the importance of farming tradition and innovation. The bottles are 700ml which perfectly poises the line for international expansion in the future. More information can be found here: https://heavenhilldistillery.com/grain-to-glass/

Whisky Hammer becomes first UK auction house to launch bonded warehouse service in Singapore – Whisky News

Whisky Hammer becomes first UK auction house to launch bonded warehouse service in Singapore

The service will benefit UK sellers looking to tap into the growing interest in whisky collection in Asia

Specialist spirits auctioneer, Whisky Hammer, has announced the launch of its bonded warehouse service – a first for a UK auction house – in Singapore.

Founded in the heart of Speyside by brothers Daniel and Craig Milne, Whisky Hammer has become the global destination for buyers and sellers of rare and collectable whiskies since launching in 2015.

The addition of the new warehouse service in Singapore will further strengthen the company’s offering, making it easier for Asian buyers to take part in monthly auctions while helping UK sellers achieve better prices as they tap into the continent’s growing interest in whisky collection.

Asia Pacific continues to be the world’s most valuable export region for whisky, with exports totalling more than USD2.2 billion in 2023. Five countries from the region ranked amongst the world’s top 10 export destinations and Asia Pacific was responsible for almost a third of all global whisky exports last year[1].

With Asia Pacific home to the world’s most valuable whisky collection and seeing surging interest in whisky auctions, including Whisky Hammer’s 100th auction that saw over 5,000 lots going under the hammer, this is an opportune moment to launch a value-added service to cater to the demands of a discerning customer base in Asia.

Customers first make their purchase from Whisky Hammer and ship their bottles from Scotland to Singapore. Upon arrival in Singapore, the goods are safely delivered to the Singapore Bonded Warehouse. A small entry fee covers all additional costs associated with transit “under bond”, and customers can then pay for their bottles to be stored and insured at the warehouse. Customers who then wish to remove their bottles from the warehouse, can then pay to either be able to collect their purchases in person from the warehouse, engage a ‘white glove’ concierge service that hand delivers their bottles to them at Changi Airport on their way out of Singapore, or have them shipped out of the warehouse to a local or foreign address.

Daniel Milne, co-founder and managing director of Whisky Hammer, said: “Our customer base in Asia continues to grow, and they are demanding more value-added services from us to complement our auctions. Our new bonded warehouse in Singapore is a sign of our commitment to investing in the needs of our customers in Asia and how we’re providing a seamless purchasing experience for them, while also supporting sellers back home in the UK looking to benefit from this growth in demand.”

“The bonded warehouse service provides our customers with the convenience to store their whisky in a safe, controlled environment, and the flexibility to access it whenever they transit at Singapore Changi Airport. Our ‘white glove service’ ensures prompt point-to-point delivery of the customer’s whisky from the warehouse to them. We’re confident that this offering is a cost effective means to empowering those looking to start a whisky collection or add to an existing one.”

The Singapore Bonded Warehouse is pursuant to the Singapore Customs’ Zero-GST Warehouse Scheme. Approved companies such as Whisky Hammer can store imported non-dutiable goods, including spirits such as whisky, for an indefinite period of time in a designated area licensed by the Singapore Customs, with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) suspended. Customers are not required to pay GST or duties when their bottles are delivered to or picked up by them at the airport to be brought onwards to their next destination as part of their duty-free liquor concession. GST is only payable if they were to take local delivery within Singapore.

The launch of Whisky Hammer’s bonded warehouse service in Singapore coincides with its current auction. The June auction is now live and ends on Sunday, 23rd June at 10pm (SST) / 3pm (UK). It features around 2,000 unique, rare and collectible whiskies with headline lots being the oldest ever Japanese single malt whisky, the Yamazaki 55 Year Old which was last sold by Whisky Hammer in November 2022 for £380,000 / ~SG$655,000, and “The Reach”, an 81 Year Old (1940) Macallan.

Royal Salute’s link to polo has been a long and illustrious one, dating back over 15 years, and the newest polo-inspired expression comes endorsed by celebrated player and Royal Salute World Polo Ambassador Malcolm Borwick. The Royal Salute 21 Year Old Miami Polo Edition is the sixth edition in its renowned Polo Collection and continues the Scotch whisky’s ethos of entering new kingdoms by capturing the culture of emblematic polo locations around the world. Celebrating its famed polo clubs and vibrant scene, Miami is a modern-day polo destination and takes the spotlight as the inspiration behind this new blend.

Miami is such a dynamic city, so we wanted to craft a blend that would echo this with an exciting new dimension. Miami is a special place and somewhere I’ve spent a lot of time, being such an integral stop on the international polo circuit. The city’s cultural energy is electric, and as a contemporary capital of polo, it’s a fitting destination to honour within the Royal Salute Polo Collection. Capturing its dynamism within a high-aged Scotch whisky is no easy feat, and this new blend will be a perfect dram to enjoy after my next polo match there.”

Glengoyne unveils first exclusive bottling in new Solstice Series – Scotch Whisky News

Glengoyne unveils first exclusive bottling in new Solstice Series

Inspired by the movement of the sun in a full year, Glengoyne’s Solstice Series comprises two bottlings, of which the first launches this month.

Glengoyne Summer Solstice is the first expression to be shared exclusively with the Glengoyne Family.

Glengoyne Highland single malt Scotch whisky has unveiled the first in their exclusive single cask ‘Solstice Series’ comprising two beautiful single cask bottlings inspired by the movement of the sun.

Glengoyne Summer Solstice came to life following a project true to the distillery’s reputation of being Scotland’s slowest distilled whisky. Over a year in the making, 12 pinhole cameras were installed at Glengoyne Distillery to track the sun’s path through the sky and watch its influence on the maturation of the casks.

After patiently waiting, the cameras captured imagery of Glengoyne through sun, wind, ice and snow and created beautiful solargraphy to show the path of the sun over Glengoyne, inspiring the creation of the new series.

Launching Glengoyne’s Solstice Series is Glengoyne Summer Solstice, a limited edition expression of only 168 bottles available to purchase, with an ABV of 59%. The bottling is the first to be exclusively available to Glengoyne Family members.

To create the expression, Single Cask Bourbon Barrel no. 294 was hand-selected by Distillery Manager Robbie Hughes, as he believed the cask perfectly reflected the light and fruity flavours that encapsulate a Scottish summer. The cask, which had been maturing since 2008, delivers a deliciously fruity expression that offers notes of vanilla, strawberry coulis, banana, apricot and white chocolate.

On the nose, the Glengoyne Summer Solstice presents a combination of raspberry, desiccated coconut, white grape, lime, soft oak, Swiss meringue and dark coffee beans. The palette reveals a fruity and syrupy taste before revealing a beautiful finish with notes of toffee and biscuit, paired with refreshing notes of citrus and gooseberry.

Robbie Hughes, Glengoyne Distillery Manager, said: “I’m so pleased to unveil the first expression in Glengoyne’s Solstice Series, with our Summer Solstice expression. Inspired by a solography project that took place at our distillery over 12 months, the expression celebrates the movement of the sun between the summer solstices, signifying long summer evenings and the journey we’ve travelled from darkness to light.

“Everything we do at Glengoyne, we do with patience, dedication and the understanding that perfection takes time. The House of Suntory Announces the Launch of Its Groundbreaking 2024 Tsukuriwake Series – Japanese Whisky News

The House of Suntory Announces the Launch of Its Groundbreaking 2024 Tsukuriwake Series

The unique and exclusive four-expression series further explores diversity, innovation, and craftsmanship at the Yamazaki and Hakushu Distilleries.

NEW YORK, US, JUNE, 2024 — Today, The House of Suntory announces the launch of the 2024 Tsukuriwake Series – showcasing the exceptional blending and diversity of Japanese whisky. The series is comprised of Yamazaki Golden Promise, Yamazaki Islay Peated Malt, Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt, and Yamazaki 18 Year Old Mizunara.

Tsukuriwake (pronounced soo-koo-ree-wah-keh) means ‘artisanship through a diversity of making,’ and the limited-edition 2024 Tsukuriwake Series is a true reflection of this. Suntory’s 5th Generation Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo has pushed the boundaries of whisky making with this series by using ingredients like wood, and processes that expand the previous Tsukuriwake range to showcase the diversity of whisky making.

Following last year’s milestone 100th Anniversary of pioneering Japanese whisky, The House of Suntory continues to innovate the category with the 2024 Tsukuriwake Series. The previous selection was released in 2022.

“Tsukuriwake translates to ‘artisanship through a diversity of making’, which is truly what the 2024 Series represents with each of the four liquids included,” says Chief Blender of Suntory Shinji Fukuyo. “While past releases from the collection focused mainly on the details of the casks, The 2024 Tsukuriwake Series emphasizes the elements of whisky making, such as ingredient selection, peat, and cask. This series is the ultimate showcase of the incredible diversity of choices that goes into the making of Yamazaki and Hakushu whiskies.”

In previous years, the Tsukuriwake Series has mainly focused on the casks matured in the lands of Yamazaki. The 2024 Series reveals that the Tsukuriwake approach goes beyond diversifying the whiskies in multiple casks to  incorporate elements of whisky-making, such as ingredient selection, peat and cask. See below:

Yamazaki Golden Promise
Yamazaki Golden Promise is made from golden promise barley, a standout grain cultivated in Scotland in the 1960s. Distilled in Japan since 2009 and aged in American Oak casks, it delivers a maltier, richer Yamazaki profile. It is perfect for more mature whiskies and has been added to Yamazaki 12 Year Old, imparting its deep and rounded flavor. Yamazaki Golden Promise offers a rich and full palate featuring notes of orange marmalade, custard and a sweet, lasting finish.

Yamazaki Islay Peated Malt
Islay Peat is often recognized as a distinctive character amongst scotch, with a softer and sweeter mouthfeel than Scotland’s mainland peat. The water and maturation process used to create Yamazaki Islay Peated Malt yields a balanced sweetness that complements the smoke, that adds complexity to the long enduring finish of Yamazaki. On the palate, it has a smooth sweetness of brown sugar with hints of bitter orange citrus and a warm, smokey finish.

Both Yamazaki Golden Promise and Yamazaki Islay Peated Malt, enhance the intricate, multi-layered flavor profile of the Yamazaki core brand.

Yamazaki 18 Year Old Mizunara (Tsukuriwake 2024 Edition)
Yamazaki 18 Year Old Mizunara (2024 Tsukuriwake Edition) introduces a limited-edition label for Suntory’s flagship Yamazaki 18 Year Old Mizunara, celebrating The House of Suntory’s legacy of mastering Mizunara oak: a Japanese oak notoriously difficult to work with, but now known as a signature enhancer of Suntory whiskies. The complex, deep flavor of Mizunara gives depth to the multi-layered profile of Yamazaki. A long maturation period reveals its signature spiciness and incense-like sandalwood and aloe wood flavors that comprise this 100% Mizunara whisky. It offers subtly spiced orange notes and a long, lingering finish with hints of clove and dried coconut.

Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt (2024 Tsukuriwake Edition)
Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt (2024 Tsukuriwake Edition) introduces a limited-edition label for Suntory’s celebrated Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt. To honor the art of diverse blending at the Hakushu distillery, it enables The House of Suntory to produce more than 100 different malt whiskies and constant refinement of the Japanese peated malt whisky. The refined and elegant smokiness of Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt lends a refreshing quality to the liquid, evoking the essence of a serene forest. A lengthy maturation process in Hakushu’s pristine and pure water reveals a distinct smokiness with spicy, peppery notes, deepening to unveil herbaceous minerals and ripe apple undertones.

The Yamazaki 18 Year Old Mizunara and Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt, launched last year for the House of Suntory’s 100th anniversary and were continued due to their popularity among consumers.
