Scotch Whisky Brand Dewar’s Announces 3-year Partnership with TED – Scotch Whisky News

Scotch whisky brand Dewar’s announces 3-year partnership with TED

Following a successful collaboration with TEDGlobal in 2011 and TED 2012 earlier this year, Dewar’s are proud to announce a 3-year partnership with TED, launching at this year’s TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The conference brings together renowned international speakers from a wide array of fields including technology, science, academia, entertainment and design, including visual affects guru Robert Legato (Avatar) and singer/songwriter Macy Gray. Dewar’s will be served up during the week at hosted events, included in that is the exclusive after party at The Caves, an intimate venue in the heart of Edinburgh where TEDGlobal delegates will be treated to live music from globally celebrated artists.

Earlier this year Dewar’s partnered up with TED, the non-profit organisation dedicated to “Ideas Worth Spreading” to showcase the brand new Dewar’s Hub, a revolutionary interactive experience that distilled and visualised real time Twitter conversations. Fusing beautiful visuals with incredible Kinect technology, the Dewar’s Hub allowed users to play with real-time TED conversations projected on a plinth, where you could then sort through tweets using hand motion detection and literally be part of the conversation.

“We’re partnering with Dewar’s over the next three years to focus on collaborations that grow our collective vision of exploring and spreading great ideas,” said Ronda Carnegie, Head of Global Partnerships at TED.

Tom Swift, Global Marketing Manager, Dewar’s, said: “Dewar’s is extremely proud to announce its 3-year partnership with TED. Through this collaboration, we will demonstrate our commitment to innovation and ideas, ensuring we continue to push the boundaries of creativity. We’ve got exciting plans for TEDGlobal 2012 and are looking forward to bringing them to life.”

Founded in 1846 by John Dewar, DEWAR’S has grown from a small wine and spirits merchant shop in Scotland, to one of the largest Scotch whisky brands in the world. Best known for its iconic DEWAR’S White Label, the top selling Blended Scotch Whisky in the USA, it has expanded its family to create a portfolio of premium and super premium whiskies including DEWAR’S 12 Years Old, DEWAR’S 18 Years Old & the exclusive DEWAR’S Signature. These whiskies are crafted using the DEWAR’S double-ageing process. Pioneered by DEWAR’S in 1899, it involves returning the hand-crafted blend to vintage oak casks for further maturation. The result is a smoother taste with a long, lingering finish; an extra step that is simply worth doing. A taste that wins medals and applause, making DEWAR’S one of Scotland’s most awarded whiskies.

Dalmore The World’s Fastest Growing Malt – Scotch Whisky News

Dalmore The World’s Fastest Growing Malt

Luxury brand The Dalmore is officially the world’s fastest growing single malt, according to new figures from leading research analysts IWSR.

The data reveals that the Dalmore is currently the fasting growing malt year on year with value growth of 69 per cent, taking over from Whyte & Mackay’s other single malt brand Jura which is now the second fastest growing malt in the world with value growth of 56 per cent. The phenomenal performance of the two brands compares with average growth of only 12 per cent across the top 25 malt brands globally.

The Dalmore also takes the top billing as the fastest growing Top 10 malt brand in Travel Retail with year on year value growth of 95 per cent. Jura is again the second fastest growing brand with value growth of 75 per cent. Both compare favourably with the category average value of 8 per cent.

In the last two years, The Dalmore has established an enviable reputation for its rare and exclusive whiskies. The last bottle of The Dalmore 62, released from the personal collection of master distiller Richard Paterson, was sold at Changi Airport in Singapore for £125,000 in late 2011. This broke the previous retail record set by the same brand after the final bottle of Dalmore 64 was sold in Harrods for £120,000 earlier in the year.

The Dalmore has also been active in travel retail, recently releasing a collection of its very best whiskies – the Constellation Collection – for sale exclusively through World Duty Free Group’s main tax and duty free store at Heathrow Terminal 5.

John Beard, Chief Executive of Whyte and Mackay said:

“The global whisky market is continuing to experience a significant boom in sales and, within the malt category, competition is fierce to capitalise on this growth. So it’s testament to the hard work of our staff and the consistent quality of product that both of our malt brands are growing faster than any others out there. The Dalmore, in particular, is performing extremely well in this market and we are experiencing a growing demand from the world’s top retailers, particularly in travel retail which is a vitally important shop window for luxury brands”

Maker’s Mark Wins Trademark Protection for Signature Red Wax Seal – American Whisky News

Maker’s Mark Wins Trademark Protection for Signature Red Wax Seal

Loretto, Kentucky, – The United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit today upheld a U.S. District Court ruling protecting the registered trademark for Maker’s Mark’s signature dripping red wax seal. The ruling is a decisive victory for Maker’s Mark (NYSE: BEAM) in a trademark dispute dating to 2003, and upholds an injunction prohibiting Jose Cuervo International, Inc., its affiliates and Cuervo’s United States distributor Diageo North America from the use of a dripping red wax seal on any Cuervo tequila product. The appeals court ruling also upheld the lower court’s ruling in awarding costs to Maker’s Mark for its pursuit of the injunction.

“This decision is a resounding affirmation that our unique dripping red wax seal is a trademark of Maker’s Mark and is off limits to competitors,” said Rob Samuels, chief operating officer of Maker’s Mark. “My grandmother dipped the first bottle of Maker’s Mark in red wax, and it’s been our signature trademark ever since. We’ve been confident in our position all along, and today’s outcome confirming that our unique trade dress cannot be infringed is great news for fans of Maker’s Mark, those who handcraft our bourbon, and those who individually dip each bottle every day.”

Today’s appeals court ruling upheld an April 2, 2010 opinion by Federal Judge John G. Heyburn II of the United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky. Maker’s Mark was represented in this litigation by a team from the law firm of Kenyon & Kenyon of Washington, D.C. led by Edward T. Colbert.

About Maker’s Mark® Bourbon

In 1954, at a small Victorian distillery in Loretto, Kentucky, Bill Samuels, Sr., made the first 19 barrels of a totally new whisky, using pure, iron-free, limestone spring water and a mash consisting of yellow corn, barley and red winter wheat that, when aged-to-taste over the next six years, would become Maker’s Mark bourbon. Mr. Samuels created a bourbon that brought “good taste” and “taste-good” together for the first time and, in so doing, heralded the modern era of bourbon. In 2010, in tribute to his father’s spirit of innovation Bill Samuels, Jr., unveiled Maker’s 46, a totally new bourbon which reflects the distinct character of Maker’s Mark but has a bigger, bolder and full bodied taste that is luscious without any hint of bitterness. Today, Maker’s Mark continues to hand make its bourbon exactly the same way Bill Samuels, Sr., did almost 60 years ago, in small batches by skilled craftsmen who hand-cut each label and hand-dip each bottle. Maker’s Mark bourbon whisky (45% alc./vol.) and Maker’s 46 (47% alc./vol.) are distilled, aged and bottled by the Maker’s Mark Distillery, Inc., in Loretto, Kentucky. In 1980, the distillery was designated a National Historic Landmark, becoming the first distillery in America to be so recognized, and has also been decreed as the “world’s oldest operating bourbon whisky distillery” by Guinness World Records. The Maker’s Mark Distillery is one of the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting more than 100,000 visitors each year. Refurbished Tomatin Distillery is Preparing for a Bumper Summer Season – Scotch Whisky News

Refurbished Tomatin Distillery is Preparing for a Bumper Summer Season

Tomatin Distillery is looking forward to welcome in excess of 20,000 visitors to its Visitor Centre this summer, following a £150,000 investment in upgrading the popular tourist attraction.

As well as extensive refurbishment and brand new facilities, an exciting new feature within the Visitor Centre is the ability to pour and label your own limited bottle of Tomatin whisky. There will be two Distillery Exclusive casks at any one time for visitors of the distillery to choose from and when the cask is emptied it will be replaced with a new selected cask.

The distillery tour has also been improved, so much so that the distillery is also celebrating its upgraded VisitScotland rating to 4 stars, awarded in June 2012. While the tour previously offered limited access, visitors will now – for the same price – see more of the production areas of the distillery, including the Malt Bins, Mashing, Fermentation, the Stillhouse and one of the traditional Dunnage Warehouses.

Marie Macleod, Visitor Centre Manager, is delighted with their new look: ”Following the refurbishment, the Visitor Centre now looks much brighter and more inviting. We’ve had great customer feedback since we started the new tour, which was emphasised with the great result following our mystery guest visit from VisitScotland!

Our Distillery Manager, Graham Eunson, also had the great idea of opening up the side of one of our disused Mash Tuns to let visitors see the inside, an added extra which is unique to Tomatin Distillery and has also been a wonderful success so far.”

Tomatin continues to push its award winning Single Malt Scotch Whisky range, along with its Blended Scotch Whisky brands, all of which are available to purchase from the Distillery Visitor Centre Shop. Details of Visitor Centre opening times and tours are available from their website: www.tomatin.com

WORLD RECORD PRICE FOR EXCEPTIONAL 50 YEAR OLD MACALLAN AT BONHAMS EDINBURGH – Scotch Whisky News

WORLD RECORD PRICE FOR EXCEPTIONAL 50 YEAR OLD MACALLAN AT BONHAMS EDINBURGH

The highest price ever paid for a bottle of The Macallan 50 year old, distilled in 1928 and bottled in 1983, was achieved when it sold for £17,500 at Bonhams Whisky sale in Edinburgh on Wednesday 27 June.

Estimated at £10,000-12,000 the bottle, bearing a label in particularly fine condition, came in its own wooden presentation case. The Macallan 1928 was one of the first 50 year old malts to be released and is regarded as a key part of any serious whisky collection. Only 500 bottles were released, and as they rarely come onto the market they have become increasing difficult to find.

Bonhams Whisky specialist, Martin Green said, “This is acknowledged as one of the greatest whiskies ever and it is not surprising to see it attracting a record price.”

The previous highest price for the The Macallan 50 year old was £13,500.

The sale made a total of £200,000 with 87% sold by lot and 90% by value.

NOTES FOR EDITORS
Bonhams, founded in 1793, is one of the world’s largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. AIR FRANCE KLM Toasts Increase in Market Share With Special Dram From Aberdeenshire Distillery – Scotch Whisky News

AIR FRANCE KLM toasts increase in market share with special dram from Aberdeenshire distillery

AIR FRANCE KLM Group is market leader in Scotland, flying over 1.2 million passengers last year. To celebrate this, KLM – de facto carrier of Scotland – has teamed up with one of the intrinsic elements of Scottish culture, a Scottish whisky distillery, to pick its own cask of single malt whisky.

Following a strong increase in market share over the past year, the Air France KLM Group now transports 1 in 4 long-haul passengers.

KLM recently expanded their Scottish service by adding Inverness to its Scottish network following a new partnership with Flybe. Air France KLM now offers up to 38 flights a day from its five airports in Scotland: Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness.

To reaffirm KLM’s commitment to serving the needs of Aberdeen and Grampian’s business community, the airline teamed up with local Aberdeenshire distillery, Glen Garioch, to pick its own cask of single malt whisky.

Senior KLM staff visited the Glen Garioch distillery earlier this year to hand-select a non-chill filtered single malt preserved at cask strength from North American oak, which has been quietly maturing at the distillery since 1998. It was specifically chosen by KLM for its sweet roasted almond notes mixed with intense dark chocolate and wood spice, finished with smooth and creamy hints of vanilla and coconut. Bottles of the single malt will be distributed to business and leisure customers.

Henri Hourcade, General Manager of Air France KLM, UK and Ireland, said:

“To highlight KLM’s commitment to Scotland, we have teamed up with Glen Garioch, where staff from KLM picked its own cask of single malt. Investing in local businesses and people is important to KLM and we wanted to mark our continued success in Scotland by partnering with a distillery with such a rich history and beautiful whiskies.”

David Wilson, Sales and Marketing Director at Morrison Bowmore Distillers, said:

“We were delighted to team up with KLM to pick a cask at the Glen Garioch distillery earlier this year. The KLM staff picked an excellent 14-year-old with wonderful sweet roasted almond notes and a lovely smooth vanilla finish. This is sure to be an excellent dram to be enjoyed by KLM customers.”

PRICELESS BOTTLE OF MALT MILL UNVEILED AT LAGAVULIN DISTILLERY – Scotch Whisky News

PRICELESS BOTTLE OF MALT MILL UNVEILED AT LAGAVULIN DISTILLERY

STORY FROM AWARD WINNING FILM BECOMES REALITY

The world’s only known bottle of Malt Mill new-make spirit was unveiled for enthusiasts and whisky pilgrims at the Lagavulin distillery on Monday 25 June 2012. Thought to have disappeared forever, Malt Mill is the basis of the plot for the award-winning Ken Loach film, The Angels’ Share.

Charles Maclean, one of the world’s leading whisky writers, who also played a role in the film, comments on the unveiling. “This bottle is priceless. Malt Mill is legendary, and is viewed by many as the holy grail. It is an extremely significant moment and I’m delighted to be part of it.”

Dr Nick Morgan, head of whisky outreach, Diageo, adds, “In my twenty years as an historian and archivist, I’ve always wanted to see this unique bottle of Malt Mill go on display. We are thrilled to share this precious artefact with the many whisky enthusiasts who visit Lagavulin every year.”

Rebecca O’ Brien, Producer for The Angels’ Share, says, “It is wonderful to think this bottle has been passed down from distillery manager to distillery manager for fifty years here on Islay. Our film hinges on the auction of an imaginary cask of Malt Mill precisely because everyone agreed it was so rare. Now the very DNA of Malt Mill has been rediscovered.”

The bottle of Malt Mill came to light after the Lagavulin distillery manager, Georgie Crawford, heard about the film. Involving some whisky related shennanigans, and based on an auction of an imaginary last cask of Malt Mill, she brought out the Malt Mill from its secret location. It had been passed on to her by her predecessor, the former Lagavulin distillery manager.

The Angels’ Share, which is currently on general cinema release, was written by Scot Paul Laverty and was filmed in various locations around Scotland last summer. The film was a hit at this year’s Cannes Film Festival where it won the coveted Jury Prize.

Malt Mill was produced at a small distillery on the Lagavulin distillery site from 1908; production ceased in 1962 and this bottle is from the last fill in June 1962.
