Awards Pour In For Amrut Distilleries – Indian Whisky News

Awards pour in for Amrut Distilleries

Amrut Distilleries, the maker of India’s finest malt whisky, will be picking up the “New World Whisky” title in Chicago today, just hours after it landed the “Whisky Ambassador of the Year” award at the Icons of Whisky in London.

Amrut’s Two Continents malt whisky will be named Whisky Advocate’s “New World Whisky of the Year” at WhiskyFest at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago. Two Continents is made from 100% Indian barley grown in Punjab and Rajasthan, then mashed, distilled and aged in Bangalore. It was then transferred to Europe where it was aged in ex-bourbon casks and then bottled. This gives it a “rich, complex, unique, and exciting oral explosion” according to Whisky Advocate.

At Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whisky, Ashok Chokalingam, Amrut’s General Manager – International Operations, was named “Whisky Ambassador of the Year”. The judges praised the hard work of Ashok and Amrut Director, Rick Jagdale, since launching Amrut Malt in 2004. “The gamble and all the legwork has paid off for Ashok and Rick, with Amrut establishing its credentials as a serious award winning whisky” they said.

Ashok has been on ambassadorial duties this month in the United States. He has been on a four-city tour promoting the award-winning malts which are making Amrut Distilleries one of the most talked-about whisky makers in the world just now. Not only does it have some of the finest malts on the market, but they are also unique in coming from the tropical Indian city of Bangalore. Amrut’s malt whiskies have only had limited availability in the US market until recently, so this is an ideal opportunity for a first-hand encounter with what everyone is about.

In addition Amrut’s latest release is being unveiled at the Chicago WhiskyFest. Kadhambam lives up to its name which means “mixture” in Tamil, having been matured in a variety of containers – sherry butts, brandy casks and rum barrels – for different lengths of time. It captures a range of characteristics from this mix of maturation methods.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Amrut Distilleries

Amrut Single Malt Whisky from India was launched officially in Glasgow in 2004. Since then its reputation has grown, with its range of innovative whiskies using Indian barley from the Punjab, distilled in the tropical garden city of Bangalore at 3,000ft above sea level. Amrut Distilleries has won many awards.

Last year, Amrut Fusion was named Grand Master of World Whisky at The Spirits Business Awards in London in December. Already named one of seven Masters of World Whisky by the judging panel of the prestigious event, Amrut Fusion came out as the “best of the best” in the final stage of the competition.

Amrut Distilleries was named a Distiller of the Year in the Icons of Whisky 2011 and was crowned in the Rest of the World category by the independent judges of the prestigious awards, which are organized by Whisky Magazine. The award was made to Amrut “for raising the profile of Indian whisky across the globe and its innovations in the production process”. The Rest of the World title meant the Bangalore distillery was also one of the four contenders for the Icons of Whisky Distiller of the Year title.

In February 2011, Fusion was named World Whisky of the Year at the Malt Advocate Whisky Awards. In a new category created to recognize “the wonderful whiskies” being produced in countries like Japan, India, Sweden, England, outside the major distilling nations, John Hansell, editor of Malt Advocate magazine, explained the choice of winner. “India’s Amrut distillery changed the way many think of Indian whisky. … Amrut is making whisky, and it’s very good.”

In The Whisky Bible 2010, leading whisky expert, Jim Murray awarded Amrut Fusion Single Malt Whisky the title of World’s Third Best Whisky. Murray said Fusion “has to be one of the great whiskies found anywhere in the world this year”. Admitting his No 3 choice could come as a surprise to some people, he said: “The fact that it is Indian? Irrelevant, from distillation to maturation this is a genius whisky from whichever continent.”

Fusion was named the Best Natural Cask Whisky in the Daily Drams Category at the Malt Maniacs Awards 2009. It picked up the award for the best whisky matured exclusively in “untreated”, regular cask(s) in the category for whiskies with an average street price of up to 50 euros. It was also awarded a silver medal. In 2011, Malt Maniacs awarded Amrut Portonova the title of Best Cask Innovation Award (Premium).

One of the Amrut Single Malt Whisky bottlings by Blackadder International won “The Best Daily Dram” category of Malt Maniacs 2008 Awards. All the Amrut brands entered into the same competition won silver and bronze medals.

Amrut Peated Malt Cask Strength Whisky won Silver and Amrut Single Malt Cask Strength Whisky Bronze at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2008.

Amrut is now sold widely in Europe (UK, Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Spain), Canada, South Africa, Australia and the United States.

Purple Valley Imports is the importer of Amrut in the USA. http://purplevalley.tv/

Smokehead Joins EuroDragster

Photocaption: The new Smokehead and Marshall Amps sponsored Fuel Funny car, running out of the MPM and FGR Motorsport camp, photographed at Santa Pod, the European home of Dragster racing.

23 March 2012, Edinburgh: Smokehead, the explosive Islay Single Malt from independent bottler, blender and distiller, Ian Macleod Distillers, has announced its support for the EuroDragster.com 2012 season.

In partnership with iconic music brand, Marshall Amps (celebrating its 50th Anniversary), Smokehead is proud to be supporting a Fuel Funny car that will be running out of the MPM and FGR Motorsport camp in 2012. The slick new car was officially unveiled at the Marshall stand at the Frankfurt Musikmesse, the world’s leading trade fair for the world of music. Taking place 21-24 March 2012, the Frankfurt Musikmesse was attended by over 110,000 visitors and some of the biggest names in the music industry.

Described as being vigorous and unapologetic for its big and intense peaty flavours, this Single Malt matches the spirit of Drag Racing, celebrating the craftsmanship and dedication of the teams that go into making the sport of Drag Racing one of the most popular racing sports in the world.

Earlier this month, Smokehead revealed a new limited Rock Edition presentation tin to celebrate its credentials as the rock n’ roll spirit of choice for 2012, introducing the time-honoured symbol of rock: a smoking skull. The eye-catching design, which features letterpress adjectives set within the skull, describing the Single Malt’s boisterous, outrageous, and deep peaty flavours, also plays a key design feature on the new MPM and FGR Motorsport Funny Car.

Iain Weir, Marketing Director for Smokehead commented: “Like a Fuel Car sitting in the beams waiting to launch, Smokehead is an explosive Islay Single Malt that demands your immediate attention. Through our work with Marshall over the years, we have become an enthusiastic supporter of all things rock and roll. Joining together to celebrate and support Eurodragster is a natural progression for both brands, as we share an affinity with the power and passion that the racing ignites.”

Entering its third year as the official drinks sponsor of The Marshall Ultimate Band Contest, the unsigned band showdown, in partnership with legendary Marshall Amps and Lick Library, Smokehead has also established itself as the drink of choice at big rock events including the annual Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards 2009-2011. The must attend event for rock artists and industry heavyweights, previous attendees have included iconic rock legends Slash, Brian May, Jeff Beck and Gene Simmons.

A rich, seaweedy and intensely peaty Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Smokehead is not for the faint hearted. With immense fresh and fruity flavours that burst with notes of sherry, iodine, toffee, smoke and sea salt, Smokehead hits the palate like a cannonball soaked in Nitro.

The new Limited Edition Smokehead ‘The Rock Edition’ is available in the UK and international markets throughout 2012. Smokehead is widely available throughout the UK and worldwide, RRP £33.49. Details of some stockists can be found on the website www.smokehead.com

New Scotch and Food Pairing Menu Feature at SipSmokeSavor.com – Scotch Whisky News

New Scotch and Food Pairing Menu Feature

Why reserve your favorite single malt until the end of a meal?  “That’s so passé”, according to the whisky pairing fanatics at Sip Smoke Savor ® and they’ve set out to prove it, with their new website feature at http://www.sipsmokesavor.com/index.php/food/pairing-menus

Elaborate food and spirit tasting events are finally getting the attention they deserve. Chefs seem more emboldened than ever in their experimentation with the whisky flavor palate beyond the consideration that it should go with dessert.  The industry is building a proverbial treasure trove of exquisite and savory pairing examples which unfortunately disappears after each singular event.

Christopher Gardner, Chef Partner of Flemings Prime Steakhouse at Glenmorangie Tasting Event

The aim of this new series is to collect and share these “DRAMatic” menus while extolling the creativity of these Chef pioneers.  Recipes added to each article will hopefully inspire some culinary courage among the general public to not limit their conception or their dinner parties to a sip after meals.

Chefs, distillery representatives, ambassadors or individuals that would like to contribute to this menu pairing series or know of upcoming scotch/food tasting events are invited to contact Marcia@SipSmokeSavor.com

Bowmore Launches “Magic Happens on the ‘Darkest’ Nights” To Highlight Core Expression: Bowmore 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’ – Scotch Whisky News

Bowmore Launches “Magic Happens on the ‘Darkest’ Nights” To Highlight Core Expression: Bowmore 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’

MARCH 2012 – This year Bowmore, the first Islay Single Malt whisky, is launching an exciting marketing campaign Magic Happens on the ‘Darkest’ Nights to support the growth of its multi-award winning core expression, Bowmore 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’. The new integrated campaign will see a series of innovative activities rolled out globally and will span advertising, digital, PR and on-trade/off-trade marketing activity.

Bowmore whisky is widely acknowledged to be the most perfectly balanced in the world; the new campaign will support the trade in offering this interesting and complex (not just smoky) Islay expression to Single Malt enthusiasts as well as expand distribution. Bowmore 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’ is the outcome of 12 years maturing in American Bourbon casks, followed by a three year finish in Oloroso sherry casks, resulting in warmth, depth and a burnt sienna colour – all providing inspiration for Magic Happens on the ‘Darkest’ Nights. This consumer proposition allows the brand to explain the meaning behind the name ‘Darkest’.

Kicking off the campaign is the consumer event Magic Happens on the ‘Darkest’ Nights in London in April; a theatrical and immersive experience where guests will be taken on a sensory–filled journey that brings to life Bowmore 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’, Islay and its myths and legends in a multi-roomed venue. The event partners with Master Chocolatier Paul Young from Paul A Young Fine Chocolates, stargazing experts from the Kielder Forest StarCamp Observatory, pop-up culinary experts Hidden Dining, and Gideon Reeling, purveyor of bespoke theatrical interactive experiences.

Similarly in May, Bowmore will host the only headline event at the Manhattan Cocktail Classic in New York – the annual festival of cocktails and culture. Here, Bowmore will present a performance of cult phenomenon immersive theatre Sleep No More by Punchdrunk, the pioneers of immersive theatre.

Bowmore’s collaboration with Paul A Young will also continue through 2012. For one of the darkest and most magical nights of the year – Bonfire Night – the groundbreaking Master Chocolatier is creating the perfect hot chocolate serve using Bowmore 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’. The expression is incorporated into a dark chocolate ganache bon bon, which the consumer thenstirs into the hot chocolate drink and watches as the ganache and whisky melt away.

All consumer activities will be housed on a newly designed microsite focusing on the ‘magic’ of ‘Magic Happens on the Darkest Nights’. The site will feature Bowmore influenced online magical illusions that use video, interactivity and animation to create an immersive experience. The microsite will also incorporate information aboutsampling events and competitions.

To support the on-trade, a new series of intimate consumer events Darkest Nights will take place at premium accounts across the country, where guests can experience stargazing, in-depth whisky tastings and food pairings. Bowmore 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’ chocolate perfect serve kits have also been specially designed to create a memorable and theatrical serve experience. To complete the support, three classic whisky cocktails – Rob Roy, Rusty Nail and Blood & Sand – have been tailored to complement the ‘Darkest’ fruity notes and smokiness.

Unique sensory sampling activities using Bowmore branded blindfolds and bespoke chocolates will also be available for select off-trade accounts. The activity will allow consumers to explore the depth of taste with dark chocolate and communicate the Bowmore 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’ flavour notes.

Cara Laing, Brand Manager of Bowmore, comments: “We are hugely excited to be showcasing our 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’ as a core member of the Bowmore range. The spirit is truly exceptional and a firm favourite with trade and consumers alike. The new campaign allows us to explore new marketing platforms such as chocolate pairing and even astronomy!”

Rachel Barrie, Master Blender of Morrison Bowmore Distillers, comments: “To me Bowmore 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’ is the dark and alluring side of Bowmore; a rich and beguiling malt that fusessherry and peat smoke together in perfect harmony. Seductive smokiness is balanced by rich dried fruit, treacle toffee and chocolate sweetness, with a drizzle of lime and sprinkle of sea salt to slice through the indulgence. With its wonderfully warming and velvety texture, it is perfect to warm your soul as darkness descends. Relax, sink into your chair and savour the spirit of ‘Darkest’.”

NOTES:

Bowmore 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’ – Tasting Notes

Bowmore 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’ is matured in not one, but two types of cask: North American bourbon and Spanish Oloroso sherry. Over time, the bourbon barrels help to bring out the classic Bowmore smokiness, but it’s the final three years spent maturing in Oloroso casks that have the most profound effect. These wonderful hand-selected sherry butts give our 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’ the rich, deep amber colour reflected in its name, as well as its deliciously warming finish.

Colour:burnt sienna

Nose: delicious dark chocolate, rich, dark fruits and a tell-tale wisp of Islay smoke

Palate: wonderful cedar wood and rich treacle toffee

Finish: robust and warming with a hint of sherry tannin

Tasting Tip: Bowmore 15 Years Old ‘Darkest’ has real warmth and depth. Warm the glass in your hands before sipping to bring out the classic Bowmore smokiness, dark chocolate and raisin aromas.

Bowmore

The best-balanced Islay Single Malt whisky is the perfect reward after your outdoor experience.

Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the oldest Distillery on Islay, one of the Scottish isles, which make up the region known as the ‘Islands’ in the lexicon of Whisky. The other regions are the Highlands, Speyside and the Lowlands. Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore is no exception; we carefully smoke our malt and use skills handed down from generation to generation to craft a perfectly balanced Single Malt.

Bowmore’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of our Single Malts. We’re one of only a few distilleries anywhere which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery. For our whiskies we draw water from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones, and it’s the same Islay peat that fires the malt-drying kiln.

Bowmore Distillery’s close proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of our spirit. The legendary Bowmore No. 1 Vaults is where most of our whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the Vault’s sea-facing wall.

They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, gradually developing rich and mellow flavours.

It’s this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore Single Malt Whiskies.

Islay

Islay is the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides, and is also known as “The Queen of the Hebrides.” Its mild climate and rich peaty soil make it ideal for creating whisky, and despite having a population of not much more than 3,000, it’s home to no fewer than eight distilleries.

Spring Arrivals at Miner’s Delight Inn – Scotch Whisky News

Spring arrivals at Miner’s Delight Inn

Winter 2011/2012 put on a pitiful performance, snow-wise. This one-footer on Memorial Day last May was the last big snow we received. In a place where we average more than 200 inches of snow a year, we’ve had barely more than 80 inches so far this season.

Luckily the single malt Scotch whisky has come on a more predictable schedule, and on the first day of spring 2012 four new expressions arrived.

Glenfarclas 105, Glengoyne 10 year, and Glenrothes 1988 were three whiskys we tasted at the Victoria Whisky Festival in January. They comprise part of a dozen whiskys we’ll add to the backbar thanks to the opportunity to taste so many at the festival.

Arran 14 year is the fourth whisky that arrived, part of our expanding line from that terrific young distillery.

Happy Spring, and if you live in a place where you have more snow than you want, please send some our way.

All the best,

Bob
