Glenmorangie reimagines its signature whisky for even more deliciousness…. – Scotch Whisky News

Glenmorangie reimagines its signature whisky for even more deliciousness

— The Original reaches a luscious new flavour pinnacle as a 12-year-old whisky —

Glenmorangie Highland single malt Scotch whisky has reimagined its smooth, luscious flagship Glenmorangie Original to make it more delicious than ever. The Distillery’s whisky creators are always exploring ways to bring new flavours and possibilities to their single malt. And in the course of their experiments, they concluded that their signature whisky’s tastes were even more luscious at 12 years old than at 10. Shared worldwide to delight whisky fans old and new, Glenmorangie’s silkier, creamier The Original 12 Years Old catapults this single malt’s much-loved notes of orange, honey, vanilla and peach to a new pinnacle of flavour. What is more, its wondrous tastes and aromas have already been recognised with a prized industry award.

For 180 years, Glenmorangie’s whisky makers have been endlessly imaginative on their quest for deliciousness. They craft their more delicate, fruity spirit in stills as tall as a giraffe to allow more space for taste and aroma. Then they age it in the finest casks. The epitome of Glenmorangie’s house style, The Original has long been the Distillery’s flagship expression. But some time ago, the Whisky Creation Team began to wonder whether they could make that award-winning classic even more of a joy to drink.

As part of this mission, Glenmorangie’s expert tasting panel began a series of experiments with The Original. They revealed that this smooth single malt gains extra silkiness, sweetness and complexity when aged for 12 years instead of 10. And so, Glenmorangie decided to share a reimagined Original, to bring more joy to whisky drinkers around the world. Swirling with creamy vanilla and a rush of citrus, layered with honey and peach, this single malt takes The Original’s kaleidoscope of flavours to new heights of deliciousness. The whisky has been met with delight by the critics, who gave it a coveted gold medal at the prestigious World Whiskies Awards 2024.

Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s Director of Whisky Creation, said: “In 1984 when I was studying in Edinburgh for my PhD, I tasted single malt scotch whisky for the very first time. That whisky was Glenmorangie. I’ll never forget my first magical sip and how I became beguiled by its complex range of flavours. During my many years at Glenmorangie, I have always aimed to keep the whisky true to my memory of that first taste. However, recently my team and I started to wonder whether we could reimagine our flagship expression, The Original, for even more deliciousness. The result is The Original 12 Years Old! Smoother, creamier and even more complex, I like to think it “turns up the volume” on our signature whisky’s classic notes of orange, vanilla, peach and honey.”

Glenmorangie Original 12 Years Old will be available from Glenmorangie.com and the Distillery Visitor Centre from 9th July, then available elsewhere in the UK from August onwards, RRP: £40.

THE ORIGINAL

Creamy with vanilla and a rush of citrus, The Original is where all our whisky-making adventures begin. First released by our founders more than 175 years ago, the original Glenmorangie was known for its mellow tones and delicacy of flavour. All these years later, The Original remains at the heart of everything we do. Like home, we carry it with us, no matter how far we travel.

To give The Original a delicious, go-anywhere finesse, we craft its spirit in our giraffe-high stills. Then we age it 12 years in bourbon casks where it absorbs all manner of delectable flavours. The result is a whisky which welcomes you with luscious layers of orange and honey, vanilla and bursts of peach. A smooth single malt, swirling with a kaleidoscope of taste.

THE GLENDRONACH RAISES EXPECTATIONS WITH PHOTOGRAPHER AND DIRECTOR RANKIN – Scotch Whisky News

THE GLENDRONACH RAISES EXPECTATIONS WITH

 PHOTOGRAPHER AND DIRECTOR RANKIN

The Glendronach distillery, a revered cornerstone amongst Scotland’s Single Malt distilleries for almost 200 years, has unveiled the next visual chapter

The Glendronach is set to captivate a new generation of discerning customers with its updated packaging and an innovative creative campaign, telling a story of duality where robust Highland spirit and Spanish flair merge together to create a sherry crescendo unlike any other.

The relaunch of The Glendronach marks a significant transformation for the brand. The new prestigious design features an elegant, timeless aesthetic that underscores the brand’s commitment to excellence. The new look seamlessly blends tradition with modern luxury, creating a unique and compelling visual identity. It enhances the visual appeal, marking a significant step in delivering a premium experience to our customers.

The distillery marked the re-staging in collaboration with Scottish-born photographer and director Rankin, famed for capturing the character and spirit of his subjects. Rankin and his team made the journey to the distillery to capture the balance of tradition and imagination inherent in The Glendronach, through moving images. The new campaign, juxtaposing solo Spanish and flamenco dancer Rocio Dusmet Orellana, within the distillery, has created a visual metaphor highlighting the unique marriage of two worlds, redefining the brand’s image.

Rankin, photographer and director, commented:

“I just loved the initial idea. I know the whisky sector well and this felt genuinely different and exciting to me. I also thrive off creating cultural collisions and finding beauty in the tensions they bring, plus, as a Scot by birth, the idea of bringing Flamenco to the Highlands stirred passion in me that I just couldn’t resist.”

Rachel Barrie, The Glendronach Master Blender said:

“For me, The Glendronach is a surprise, a revelation and a flavour crescendo. At first taste, it has this amplification that’s so much richer than your expectations, and our philosophy is just that – to raise expectations in Single Malt by creating the most exceptional sherried whisky. And we are now setting a new standard to match the exquisite nature of the spirit with reimagined visuals.

“Rankin’s signature style worked harmoniously in magnifying the luxurious and flamboyant nature of The Glendronach. He has beautifully captured the delicate balance of tradition and imagination inherent in our single malt, encapsulating the duality of robust Highland spirit and Spanish flair – a balanced dance – the end result is bold and it crescendos to a revelation in flavour; just like the liquid.”

As part of the reimagined design, the addition of a curated brand pattern depicting the bramble and rooks that surround and protect the distillery speaks to place and pays homage to its namesake; ‘Glendronach’ means ‘Valley of the Brambles’ in Scots Gaelic.

While the aesthetic has evolved, the award-winning core portfolio remains unchanged, continuing to mature in rare Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso casks from Andalucia, Spain. The permanent range of Single Malts, 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old, and 18 Year Old, will be the first to be presented to welcome in this new chapter.

The core portfolio will be available in the new packaging globally and be introduced to specific markets from July 2024. Later this year the portfolio will welcome a number of releases including the Master’s Anthology comprising three expressions and additions to the ultra-premium core range with a 21, 30 and 40-Year-Old release.

Penelope Bourbon Announces Annual Release of Toasted Rye Award-winning Small-batch Straight Rye Whiskey Returns – American Whiskey News

Penelope Bourbon announces annual release of Toasted Rye

Award-winning small-batch straight rye whiskey returns

ROSSELLE, N.J. (July, 2024) – Penelope’s second release in its annual Straight Rye Whiskey Toasted Series is now available. The first-ever release of Penelope Toasted Rye Whiskey achieved high acclaim at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition by scoring 99 points and winning Double Gold.

This year’s expression is the result of finishing a very special, hand-selected 95% rye and 5% malted barley mash bill in new freshly toasted barrels. Penelope Toasted Rye Whiskey (Batch 24-304) is on shelf now with a limited allocation of 9,000 (6-in) cases at a minimum suggested retail price of $74.99 per 750mL bottle.

“After what we achieved with last year’s release, we are really excited for our second installment,” said Michael Paladini, founder of Penelope Bourbon. “Our first Toasted Rye scored 99 points at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and we’re confident this release will be equally well received.”

Penelope Toasted Rye features a layered aroma on the nose with bold, sweet butterscotch and a body of vanilla and toasted marshmallow balanced with notes of light tobacco and fruit. Toasted Rye’s long finish has a sweet dessert character with orange peel and subtle spice.

“After aging the rye whiskey for six years prior to finishing, this year’s release resulted in a profile that we believe will really stand out,” said Daniel Polise, founder and master blender of Penelope Bourbon. “The char 2 profile of the finishing barrels used brought out rich butterscotch notes to the blend of selected barrels, adding additional layers and depth to a great rye whiskey.”

James B. Beam Distilling Co. and Bernheim Forest & Arboretum Renew Natural Water Sanctuary Alliance

James B. Beam Distilling Co. and Bernheim Forest & Arboretum Renew Natural Water Sanctuary Alliance

Renewed partnership underscores joint commitment to protecting vital natural resources and ensuring long-term sustainability for bourbon production in Kentucky

Clermont, Kentucky, June 5, 2024 – Suntory Global Spirits, a world leader in premium spirits, and Bernheim Forest, a 16,142-acre privately held natural resource just south of Louisville, Kentucky, have announced a renewed commitment to their shared dedication to water conservation through the Natural Water Sanctuary Alliance.

Through this extended partnership, Suntory Global Spirits will commit up to $100,000 each year over the next five years, to help preserve Bernheim’s extensive 90 miles of waterways and the staggering 21+ billion gallons of rainwater that falls on the forest annually.

“We recognize the significance of water, not only as a fundamental component of bourbon production, but as the lifeblood of the entire ecosystem,” said Nathan Crosley, General Manager, James B. Beam Distilling Co. Operations at Suntory Global Spirits and Board Member of Bernheim Forest & Arboretum. “Kentucky is a huge part of our business and the homeplace for Jim Beam, the world’s number one bourbon, and we’re so thrilled to continue working with our friends at Bernheim Forest on building nature-based solutions for the next generation of bourbon.”

The alliance, first formed in 2018, successfully developed a natural water sanctuary on Bernheim grounds, immediately adjacent to Suntory Global Spirits’ James B. Beam Distilling Co. distillery in Clermont, Kentucky. In addition to continuing ongoing watershed protection efforts, the Alliance extension will work to preserve and promote biodiversity across the wider Kentucky Bourbon Trail environment through the protection and stewardship of native forests, enhancement of native plant populations and strategic improvement of wildlife habitats. Biological surveys, invasive species management and the establishment of various habitats are among the specific tactics for the next five years.

The alliance will also enhance environmental and water cycle education for visitors, employees, and members of the Kentucky community. Hands-on activities, such as discovery stations with trained naturalists, guided walks highlighting watershed and biodiversity protection, and tailored programs delivered to school groups, will help engage the community in critical conservation efforts.

“This Alliance presents an opportunity to integrate discussions about protecting natural waters into broader conversations, engaging communities locally and regionally,” said Dr. Mark Wourms, President & CEO of Bernheim Forest, who highlights the increased recognition of the Natural Water Sanctuary Alliance, maximized by Bernheim’s scientific expertise and the James B. Beam Distilling Co.’s brand recognition.

Andrew Berry, Bernheim’s Director of Conservation, underscored the critical role of water within our local ecosystem, saying, “Water is an essential component of healthy ecosystems. Our partnership with Suntory Global Spirits furthers Bernheim’s commitment to supporting clean water for wildlife, recreation and downstream communities.”

About Bernheim Forest and Arboretum

Bernheim’s mission is to connect people with nature. Spanning 16,140 acres, it stands as the largest privately held contiguous forest block in the eastern United States committed to conservation and education. Established in 1929 by bourbon maker Isaac Wolfe Bernheim as a gift to the people of Kentucky, Bernheim offers fun and educational programs, diverse tree collections, a renowned art collection, 40 miles of hiking trails, and varied landscapes, accessible every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Loch Lomond Whiskies unveils new limited-edition 50-year-old single malt – Scotch Whisky News

Loch Lomond Whiskies unveils new limited-edition 50-year-old single malt

Release of Loch Lomond 50 Year Old is five decades in the making

Independent distiller, Loch Lomond Whiskies, has unveiled a new 50-year-old single malt, the latest addition to the brand’s premium portfolio.

A whisky five decades in the making, Loch Lomond 50 Year Old is drawn from Loch Lomond Distillery’s oldest reserves and is exclusively limited to 100 individually-numbered bottles worldwide.

Distilled in 1973 in the distillery’s unique straight neck pot stills, using 100% unpeated malted barley, this distinctive single malt whisky has been aged in a combination of refilled American oak casks, first fill bourbon casks and Oloroso sherry hogsheads.

The maturation process is carefully managed by Loch Lomond Whiskies’ master blender, Michael Henry, who joined Loch Lomond Distillery in 2007. The distillery’s oldest and rarest whisky casks remain exclusively under his personal care.

Loch Lomond 50 Year Old was initially crafted with gentle maturation in refilled American oak casks, providing the spirit with enough time to develop a rich character. Additional maturation in first fill bourbon casks in 2011, followed by a re-cask in Oloroso sherry hogsheads in 2017, have further enhanced the complexity of this elegant single malt.

The spirit’s six years in bourbon casks has imparted a rich, creamy vanilla flavour that complements the whisky’s fruity aroma. The influence of the final six years in an Oloroso sherry cask is evident on the nose, with notes of nutmeg developing into a warming cinnamon flavour that leaves a long finish of woody spice.

The result is a light whisky with notes of white flesh fruits, crisp citrus and a tropical character that pays testament to its remarkable age.

Since production began in 1966 at the current Loch Lomond site, ingenuity has been at the heart of the distillery’s methods. It is home to Scotland’s only set of straight neck pot stills, installed as part of its founding and exclusively responsible for the first 30 years of production, which allows Michael Henry and his team to carefully shape the character of the whisky at the point of distillation, creating a lighter spirit with a distinctive fruit flavour. To taste the Loch Lomond 50 Year Old is to go almost right back to the beginning of this distillery’s incredible journey – one defined by innovation and exploration in its craft.

In homage to these unique stills, a careful selection of copper finishings and touches have been woven into the design of the 50 Year Old’s lead crystal decanter, crafted by Glencairn Crystal Studio in Scotland, and the external wooden display cabinet. The natural oak finish nods to Michael Henry’s careful selection of casks and the beauty of the surrounding forests of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Contour lines and the deep turquoise colours outlining the shape of the loch from which the distillery takes it name, further pays respect to the hidden depths of this remarkable whisky’s history and heritage. Hidden within the display cabinet is a 50ml sample of the liquid and a hardback book that provides its lucky few owners with an in-depth account of the liquid, its distinctive flavour and distillation and maturation journey.

Michael Henry, master distiller at Loch Lomond Group, said: “Loch Lomond 50 Year Old is a rare example of our timeless distillation innovation.

“The decision to re-cask a whisky of this quality and age is not something I take lightly. However, the complexity and depth of flavour brought by the first fill bourbon and the Oloroso sherry casks have made this a truly special single malt, which provides a window into our past and captures the original style of whisky making at Loch Lomond Distillery.

“The expectations are high when you are working with liquid as special and as scarce as this, but it is a true honour to be the final custodian of such a special piece of history.”

Non-chill-filtered and natural in colour, Loch Lomond 50 Year Old is bottled at cask strength (42.6% ABV) and is available to purchase from the Loch Lomond Whiskies online store (www.lochlomondwhiskies.com) and worldwide through specialist retailers, priced at £25,000.

To find out more about Loch Lomond Whiskies, visit HERE

  • Nose: Refreshing orange and mint, sweet fruit of grilled peach and mango, nutmeg.
  • Palate: Beautiful depth of flavour, melted brown sugar, tangy orange marmalade and dark fruits, plum and cherry before creamy vanilla fudge and warming cinnamon spice.
  • Finish: Long, mouth-watering watermelon and kiwi with a grapefruit citrus edge, some green tea and lasting wood spice.

About Loch Lomond Whiskies

Loch Lomond Whiskies is an award-winning, independent Scotch whisky distiller which has been producing the finest single malt whiskies since 1814.  As a Highland malt, it is part of the largest and most diverse whisky-making region in Scotland.

The original site of the Loch Lomond Distillery was established near Tarbert, towards the northwest end of Loch Lomond. In the 1960s, under the leadership of American entrepreneur and chemist, Duncan – Thomas (who was instrumental in the ongoing success of Scotland’s oldest licensed distillery, Littlemill), a new site was created in Alexandria, which began a move to a more innovative philosophy and style of whisky-making that is still used today.

Located only a few miles from the famous loch, the distillery has a whisky-making capability like no other, using a combination of traditional swan-neck and its signature straight-neck-stills, which are unique to Loch Lomond Whiskies.

The straight-neck stills give Master Blender Michael Henry greater control over the distillation process, allowing him to carefully manipulate the flavour profile of each whisky, and providing a signature fruit, honey and soft smoke flavour profile.

Loch Lomond Whiskies is one of only four distillers in Scotland to have its own onsite cooperage, ensuring that barrel repairs and charring are carried out to an exacting standard, so every cask is perfect for maturing whisky.

The distillery’s multi-award-winning range includes Loch Lomond Original; Loch Lomond 12 Year Old; Loch Lomond 12 Year Old; Loch Lomond Inchmoan 12 Year Old; Loch Lomond Inchmurrin 12 Year Old; Loch Lomond 18 Year Old; Loch Lomond 21 Year Old and Loch Lomond 30 Year Old, as well as Loch Lomond Single Grain (peated and unpeated) and the deluxe blend Loch Lomond Signature.

In 2023, it was recognised as the ‘Most Awarded Distillery’ at the globally renowned San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2023, achieving multiple Double Gold and Gold Awards for its collection of malt whisky brands.

Last year, Loch Lomond 18 Year Old was revealed as The Whisky Exchange’s coveted ‘Whisky of the Year 2024’, achieving superior scores from the judging panel for its full-bodied and fruity character.

James B. Beam Pennsylvania Whiskey Heritage Center Opens at Historic West Overton Village & Museum

The updated museum floor and new exhibition at West Overton Village invite the public into the past, present and future of Pennsylvania whiskey

Scottdale, PA – Today, West Overton Village & Museum and Suntory Global Spirits announced the opening of the James B. The Center is a reimagined and updated second floor of the Museum at West Overton Village in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, a historic site where guests can uncover the storied legacies of American Whiskey alongside Pennsylvania history.

This project was made possible by Suntory Global Spirits’ strategic partnership with the West Overton Village & Museum, a nonprofit historic site. Suntory Global Spirits produces the Overholt™ whiskey brand under James B. Beam Distilling Co., which continues to honor the art and craftsmanship of whiskey making and premium spirits. Overholt™ is recognized by whiskey historians as the longest standing American whiskey brand with an unbroken chain of ownership, production and sale since Abraham Overholt began distilling in 1810. While the brand is produced today in Clermont, Kentucky, West Overton is considered the “spiritual home” of Overholt™, where Abraham and his family established roots, helped build their community, and grew their business enterprise. For more Overholt™ brand information, visit https://www.overholtrye.com

“Overholt whiskey is deeply woven into the culture and history of Pennsylvania and American whiskey,” said Aaron Hollis, West Overton’s Co-Executive Director. “We are thrilled that, in partnership with Suntory Global Spirits, the James B. Beam Pennsylvania Whiskey Heritage Center makes the rich legacy of this iconic American whiskey brand and the full breadth of Pennsylvania whiskey history accessible to the public.”

The Museum is housed in the former distillery / grist mill built in 1859. Here, visitors can engage with the 120-year history of West Overton Village, including the birthplace of Overholt™, one of America’s most enduring whiskey brands.

Within the new Heritage Center, the Sam Komlenic Gallery is home to the largest publicly accessible collection of artifacts related to Pennsylvania’s deep history of whiskey production, with more than 450 objects on display. The centerpiece of the Sam Komlenic Gallery is a striking display of 250+ whiskey bottles from the late 19th to late 20th centuries. The bottles represent some of the most successful distilling companies in Pennsylvania history, including Overholt, Dillinger, Large, Gibson, Guckenheimer, Sam Thompson, Schenley, Continental, and many more. Additional artifacts include historic barrels, crates, advertisements, documents, and memorabilia. An in-gallery app will help visitors explore the more than 40 Pennsylvania distilleries featured.

Visitors will be able to explore the region’s agricultural, industrial, and cultural heritage through the collection, including farm equipment, folk art, antique coverlets, pipe organs, medical tools, and more.

The Overholt Stateroom, a vintage-inspired lounge that pays homage to the origins of Overholt™ whiskey, features a modern bar, antique furniture and decor, vintage and modern bottlings, and a mural of Abraham Overholt. The Stateroom is available to rent through West Overton Village and will be open to guests during special private events.

West Overton Village reopened to the public on May 2, and will be open through the end of October from Thursday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST in addition to special events throughout the year. Admission includes the Museum, Heritage Center, a guided tour of the 1838 Overholt Family Homestead, and a visit to West Overton’s educational distillery.

Pennsylvania Whiskey History

Whiskey distilling in Pennsylvania dates back to at least the 18th century before the American Revolutionary War. And over the 19th century, whiskey production by the likes of Abraham Overholt and others pioneered and transformed it into a sophisticated industry. This spirit has remained resilient throughout history through companies and brands such as Overholt™. The 21st century is experiencing a revival of whiskey distilling and heritage efforts in Pennsylvania, which Suntory Global Spirits is proud to help foster through the opening of the James B. Beam Pennsylvania Whiskey Heritage Center.

About West Overton Village & Museum

LAPHROAIG UNVEILS SECOND EDITION IN ITS ELEMENTS SERIES OF EXPERIMENTAL ISLAY SINGLE MALTS – Islay Single Malt News

LAPHROAIG UNVEILS SECOND EDITION IN ITS ELEMENTS SERIES OF EXPERIMENTAL ISLAY SINGLE MALTS

Elements 2.0 focuses on the impact of an extended fermentation to push flavor boundaries,

further celebrating the iconic and rich taste profile of Laphroaig whisky

Islay, Scotland – (July 1, 2024) Islay distillery Laphroaig has unveiled Elements 2.0, the second in its exploratory series of bold whiskies that experiment with different distillation techniques. This new single malt showcases the flavor impact of extending the fermentation period, producing a fruiter whisky that still retains the peaty character that makes Laphroaig so distinctive.

In creating Laphroaig Elements 2.0, the distillery team went beyond the traditional approach to distillation and maturation to uncover interesting and unusual ways to experiment with the making of Laphroaig.

Disrupting the usual 55-hour fermentation process, Laphroaig Elements 2.0 is created from a number of longer fermentations ranging up to almost five full days in the tun – a total of 115 hours. The tun was specially aerated to maintain mash conditions, much like practices of old; a process that helps emphasize the fruitier notes of Laphroaig Islay single malt while maintaining its signature peaty character. The resulting product, Elements 2.0, is a bold, pale gold, non-chill filtered whisky with a fruity nose and palate.

Barry MacAffer, Distillery Manager for Laphroaig, commented, “Our Laphroaig Elements Series is all about blending years of traditional whisky making with new, progressive techniques. There’s no whisky that encapsulates Islay quite like Laphroaig – but this hasn’t stopped us experimenting in a way that preserves our iconic character. Laphroaig Elements 2.0 is an unexpected fruitier whisky with the same peaty character you’ve come to know and love – made possible by over double the typical fermentation period. I’m keen to hear what our Friends think of this whisky which follows in the successful footsteps of Elements 1.0.”

Each expression in the innovative Elements Series features a series of subtle details on pack, cataloging the experiments that have gone into making each bottle and the hands behind them, allowing Friends and lovers of Laphroaig an unrivaled glimpse into the magic of the whisky-making process.

Laphroaig Elements 2.0 is the second expression in the Series and is available in the US as of July at a suggested retail price of $165.00 (700ml). It follows the 2023 launch of Elements 1.0 – a spicy and peppery whisky that is a culmination of three experiments.

TASTING NOTES

Bottled at 59.6% ABV

Nose: Fruity and subtly coastal. Stewed apples, vanilla custard and zesty orange peel with subtle peaty notes.

Palate: Fruity, sweet and salty. Green apples and honey, with cream soda and soft peatiness of a smoldering bonfire and smoked seafood

Finish: Sweet with an increasingly warming smokiness to finish

Established in 1815 by the Johnston brothers, Laphroaig has stayed true to its bold flavor and distinctive character for over 200 years. Today, Laphroaig is one of only a handful of distilleries that continues to craft whisky using traditional techniques like floor malting barley and using a “cold smoking” process to create its signature smoky flavor. Laphroaig’s commitment to bold character has earned us a dedicated following of brand fans, the Friends of Laphroaig.  Launched in 1994, the same year HM King Charles granted the brand a Royal Warrant, the program has since grown to a truly global community of thousands of whisky lovers representing over 170 countries.
