BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY UPDATES BOURBON INVENTORY SHORTAGES – American Whiskey News

BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY UPDATES BOURBON INVENTORY SHORTAGES

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (May, 2014) The bourbon boom shows no signs of letting up.  At Buffalo Trace, the 228-year-old Distillery continues to take steps to mitigate the problem, but shortages still remain. About a year ago, Buffalo Trace Distillery warned consumers a shortage was looming, but many markets across the nation are just now feeling the full effects.

“We’re making more bourbon every day. In fact, we’re distilling more than we have in last 40 years,” said Harlen Wheatley, master distiller. “Still, it’s hard to keep up. Although we have more bourbon than last year when we first announced the rolling blackouts, we’re still short and there is no way to predict when supply will catch up with demand.”

Along with increased production, adding more bottling lines and hiring more people, Buffalo Trace has also hired a full-time barrel allocation manager, just as the company intended last year. The new allocation manager will balance bourbon inventory with sales volume. Monthly allocations will ensure all markets get some Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and Blanton’s every month, preventing long periods of time when these brands are unavailable.

“We taste, approve and bottle what barrels we have available each month. There are shortages, because Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and Blanton’s sell out quickly, but no shortage should last more than one month before reinforcements arrive,” said Kris Comstock, bourbon marketing director. “We’re asking for continued patience from our fans. The recent surge in demand is quite flattering, but we just need to keep in mind these bourbons were put into the barrel many years ago.”

Comstock added that other highly allocated whiskeys such as Pappy Van Winkle and the Antique Collection will continue to be released annually every fall.

Despite the increase in distillation over the past few years, bourbon demand still outpaces supply. The overall bourbon category is experiencing 5% growth, but premium brands are up nearly 20% from last year. Bourbon must be matured in new oak barrels and Buffalo Trace ages many of its barrels for eight to ten years, and some over two decades. That’s a long time to wait for a bottle of bourbon. Not to mention, with the amount of bourbon lost to evaporation over time, barrels are half empty after ten years. The increase in sales, coupled with the aging process and evaporation loss, leads to a shortage with no end in sight.

Tamdhu Toasts Top Trophy at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Awards – Scotch Whisky News

Tamdhu Toasts Top Trophy at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Awards

Tamdhu Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky is celebrating after being crowned winner of the Distillery Special Editions category at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Awards.

The results were announced on Sunday 4 May at the Awards Ceilidh at Glen Grant Distillery. They recognise the excellence of the whiskies produced in Speyside as part of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival celebrations.

Tamdhu lifted the trophy for its 10 Year Old Limited Edition Single Malt, of which only 1,000 individually numbered bottles have been produced.

Commenting on the awards, Iain Weir, Marketing Director for Ian Macleod Distillers (who own Tamdhu), said: “Following Tamdhu’s exciting return to the Speyside Festival last year, we have had a phenomenal response to Tamdhu including various other award wins already this year. For our Limited Edition bottling to receive this accolade on Tamdhu’s first anniversary since being re-launched is fantastic and a great reward for all our hard work.”

Matured in 100% first fill sherry casks, the same type insisted upon when the distillery was established in 1897, the Tamdhu 10 Year Old Limited Edition is a commemorative bottle that truly reflects the distillery’s sherry credentials. Only the best European and American oak sherry casks are selected to hold Tamdhu, giving it its wondrous natural colour and unique quality.

The judging involved a first round of blind nosing and tasting by the seven judges after which eight finalists were chosen from the 46 entries, and festivalgoers then had the opportunity to vote for their favourite.

Penny Ellis, a director of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival and organiser of the awards, said: “These are the only whisky awards where the judging is carried out by members of the whisky drinking public as opposed to a panel of industry experts and writers. The blind taste test means that voters cannot be influenced by brand loyalty or packaging, so the winners are decided purely on taste.

“The richness of colour and the unmistakeable hallmarks of a sherry cask and the aromas of spiced Christmas pudding, made this a very special whisky and I was so delighted that in the blind nosing and tasting that my fellow judges agreed that this whisky should be shortlisted.

“There has been a real buzz about Tamdhu since its relaunch last year amongst both the trade and whisky drinkers, and we’re delighted that visitors to the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival have given it their seal of approval.”

Tamdhu is owned by one of Scotland’s leading, independent family-owned distillers, Ian Macleod Distillers. Tamdhu was born on the banks of the River Spey in 1897. Its quality is defined by the hint of peat in its malted barley and the water, which is drawn directly from the Tamdhu spring.

KILCHOMAN DISTILLERY RELEASES 4TH LIMITED EDITION 100% ISLAY – Scotch Whisky News

 AA Kilchoman III

KILCHOMAN DISTILLERY RELEASES 4TH LIMITED EDITION 100% ISLAY

Independent farm distillery, Kilchoman, is releasing its 4th limited edition 100% Islay whisky on Monday (12 May). Forty first-fill bourbon barrels were selected, 32 five year old and eight four-year-old for the limited edition bottling which will be available worldwide, through existing distributors and online.

The 100% Islay whisky range is unique.  It is produced from barley grown at the distillery, and every step of the production is completed onsite so it is literally 100% Islay from barley to bottling.  Previous editions have been awarded 2013 IWSC bronze, Spirits Business Gold and IWC Silver.

The 100% Islay is only lightly peated compared to the more heavily peated Kilchoman Machir Bay and Loch Gorm expressions.

Anthony Wills, managing director of Kilchoman, said: “The 100% Islay range is something we are very proud of and we hope that people will enjoy the latest offering.  It is very exciting to be able to offer a product which is created 100% on Islay.”

“The 4th edition represents a significant development in the maturity of our 100% Islay range,” commented John MacLellan, distillery manager.  “Its balance and complexity far surpassed our expectations.”

The 4th Edition of 100% Islay is non chill-filtered and is natural colour.  Bottled at 50% ABV it will be available from specialist spirits retailers and www.kilchomandistillery.com priced at a RRP of £64.99.

Founded in 2005, Kilchoman is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland and the first distillery to be built on Islay for 125 years. A working farm distillery, it is one of only a handful of distilleries still practising floor malting. Kilchoman also grows a portion of its barley at the distillery and completes all parts of the production process, from barley to bottling on the island.

Tasting Notes: 100% Islay 4th Edition

Nose:  subtle, light smoke, pear drops and citrus fruit

Palate: long and sweet, smokiness goes on and on.  This is exceptional for a relative young Islay Single Malt

Notes

Kilchoman Distillery is a small family run farm distillery based on the rugged west coast of Islay. The distillery was established by Anthony Wills in 2005, the idea behind being to build a new distillery which took whisky production back to its roots. Anthony and wife Kathy are joined by their three sons: George, James and Peter.

Kilchoman produces its 100% Islay single malt from barley which is grown in fields surrounding the distillery and completes every stage of the whisky-making process at the distillery, including traditional floor malting. Kilchoman is the only distillery in Scotland to do this. Kilchoman is now very much a family affair:

Since the first bottling was released in 2008, Kilchoman has quickly established itself as a high quality Islay Single Malt Whisky with these notable awards:

  • Kilchoman’s exceptional quality was recognised at the prestigious International Whisky Competition (IWC) when Anthony Wills was named Master Distiller of the Year 2013.
  • Machir Bay was named Whisky of the Year at IWC 2013. Loch Gorm was also awarded Gold, Machir Bay received Silver and 100% Islay 2nd Ed was given bronze.
  • Kilchoman 2007 Vintage received Whisky Advocate’s Award for Islay Single Malt of the Year 2013.
  • In 2012 Machir Bay was awarded two prestigious IWSC Gold medals and a Silver medal, and was named in GQ’s Best 100 Things of 2012.
  • Kilchoman won Malt Advocates Artisan Whisky of the Year 2011, only three years after the first bottling was released.

BENRIACH 12 YO SHERRY WOOD MATURED WINS “SPIRIT OF SPEYSIDE” WHISKY FESTIVAL AWARD – Scotch Whisky News

SherryWood-1_LR

BENRIACH 12 YO SHERRY WOOD MATURED WINS “SPIRIT OF SPEYSIDE” WHISKY FESTIVAL AWARD

It’s been voted the best in China and now a BenRiach single malt has won a top award in Speyside!

The BenRiach 12 years old Sherry Wood Matured is the winner of the 12YO and under category in this year’s Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival.

Some 350 votes were cast in the competition, the only awards contest where the winners are determined by members of the whisky-loving public.

Eight finalists were voted on at a series of roving judging sessions across Speyside in the run-up to and during the Festival. The malts had previously been shortlisted by a panel of industry leaders, acclaimed writers and specialist retailers.

Penny Ellis, a director of the Spirit of Speyside Festival and organiser of the awards, said: “It is a huge honour to receive one of these awards because they are voted for by the public, as opposed to a panel of experts, and are not influenced by any kind of consumer loyalty or external factors.”

The five-day festival, now in its fifteenth year, attracted visitors from thirty-one countries which shows the draw of whisky and how much Speyside has to offer.

Last year the BenRiach 12 years old Sherry Wood Matured was voted the best in China. It beat 120 other single malts and blends, scoring 95 points and winning the Platinum Signature Award. It also won two trophies in the prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition in 2011.

Master Distiller Billy Walker said: “This latest award shows that our 12 years old sherry wood matured is something really special. At 46% vol, it’s been created by marrying together whiskies matured in Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez Sherry Butts sourced from Jerez in Southern Spain. This gives a wonderful balance of mocha and dark chocolate interwoven with figs, sultanas, vanilla, fruits and rich spice.”

Creamy, sweet and rich, it makes for a wonderful after-dinner dram. One reviewer said it was “faultless” and it achieved a rating of 95.5 in Jim Murray’s 2012 Whisky Bible.

Whisky Riot Looming – NZ Whisky News

SISM21

Whisky Riot Looming

Hobart, Tasmania – May 8, 2014 –  “Kyle Witek is our new hero,” grins Hobart’s Greg Ramsay, co-owner and CEO of the New Zealand Whisky Collection, which is enduring legal threats in a real David vs. Goliath legal stoush.

One of the world’s distilling giants, William Grant & Sons is continuing to threaten the Oamaru-based company about the Dunedin DoubleWood breaching trademarks of their Balvenie DoubleWood.

“My lawyers and I see absolutely no risk at all for confusion,” Greg explains, businessman best known for developing Barnbougle Dunes Golf Links. “Our bottle has a map of New Zealand on it, prominently says ‘New Zealand Whisky Collection’ and has a black box. It could not possibly be confused with Balvenie which has a white box, white label, and to my knowledge doesn’t refer to New Zealand at all.”

Based in Illinois, and an ardent admirer of William Grant’s brands such as Glenfiddich, Kyle Witek has emailed the whisky behemoth directly, threatening to boycott their products until they withdraw their legal action.

“When Kyle’s email came through, it aroused some enthusiasm among our staff and supporters to go global with a social media campaign by email, Facebook and twitter as Kyle has done; but I have a great affection for WilliamGrant & Sons, so hope they come to their senses on this. We really don’t want to see an online campaign against William Grants as the whisky industry globally revolves around a lot of their brands.”

“Anyone and everyone I’ve talked to about their legal threat thinks it’s laughable and legally weak, but sadly we have to take it very seriously and I am still hoping we can resolve this amicably, because they’re a great company and Balvenie DoubleWood is actually a rather nice dram, and they’re the kind of company that might want to invest in New Zealand whisky one day.”

American KYLE WITEK’s email to William Grant & Sons:

“As a purveyor of many of your brands, including Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Milagro, I must express my disappointment upon learning of your recent threat of legal action against New Zealand Whisky Company regarding their Dunedin Doublewood. As a scotch enthusiast I can assure you that I am not confused in the slightest by the New Zealand label and I find your decision to pursue this matter most unbecoming and entirely inappropriate. I shall curtail any further purchases of your products and hope that you quickly come to your senses over this frivolous behavior.”

Greg Ramsay met with several William Grant & Son’s representatives in the UK last year. “We’ve not heard anything on this for months, and thought that the issue had gone away,” Greg said. “But we received another legal threat last month, which I’ll now have to respond too; meaning money is spent on lawyers rather than our fantastic loyal supporters. But what I find particularly galling, is that DoubleWood whisky has been coming out of Oamaru for nearly 10 years, and they only registered their trademark very recently; very soon after our Dunedin DoubleWood won a Silver Medal at the San Francisco Spirits Awards.

Background:

The New Zealand Whisky Company is a success story that signals a revival of the whisky industry in New Zealand. The whisky was once distilled by Seagram’s in Dunedin before the distillery was sold to Fosters in 1997 as part of a global rationalisation.

Fosters mothballed the distillery and inexplicably closed it. But fortunately, more than 400 barrels of this whisky remained, and were bought by the New Zealand Whisky Company, set aside to mature and sweeten. Since then, the company has worked hard to revive the century-old industry and the whisky has been met with wide acclaim.

In London last year, the New Zealand Whisky Collection’s DoubleWood won the category for Best Australasian Blend, while the South Island Single Malt was voted the best aged Single Malt from Down Under.

The Company has also just been awarded ‘liquid gold status’ by the man believed to have visited more distilleries than anyone on earth. Jim Murray has recently released his 2014 Whisky Bible, placing the South Island Single Malt 21 y.o. in the top percentile of some 4,500 whiskies worldwide, the first time a NZ whisky has reached such status.

As well as regaining the foothold once held across New Zealand by Wilsons, the whisky is now exported from Oamaru and available across Canada, the UK, Australia and Europe
