BAIN’S AWARDED HIGHEST HONOUR IN LONDON

Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky has been awarded the Whiskies of the World Trophy, the highest honour at the International Spirits Competition (ISC) held recently in London.

Bain’s is one of only three whiskies in the category which featured many international brands, to have been bestowed a trophy.

The competition promotes outstanding quality spirits from around the world with just over 1300 entries judged from 70 countries. Entries are tasted blind by a panel of 50 international judges and scored based on aroma, appearance, taste, and finish.

The Whiskies of the World category includes all countries from around the world such as Ireland, the USA, Japan, Australia and Taiwan, excluding Scotland. Bain’s was one of only seven whiskies in this category to be awarded gold and in the final round of blind tasting the whiskies all competed against each other for the trophy accolade.

Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky Master distiller Andy Watts says this award is a great acknowledgment for the quality of South African whisky.

“Bain’s is such an incredible success story for South African whisky. The multiple awards, praise from the international whisky community and interest from consumers around the world, is incredibly rewarding.

“We set-out when launching this whisky in 2009 to truly showcase the essence of South African whisky, to set a benchmark for single grain in the world and to highlight the strides that we have taken in our short history of making whisky in this country.”

Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky is made from the finest South African grain, double matured in ex-Bourbon casks first for an initial three years before being re-vatted into a fresh set of ex-bourbon casks for a further 18 to 30 months. The result is an exceptionally smooth whisky with a delicious combination of floral, banana, honey, toasted hazelnuts and toffee aromas, revealing wood, vanilla and spice. Beautifully balanced vanilla, cocoa butter and light spices from the oak casks lead to a warm mouth-feel and long, smooth finish.

About Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky

Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky is distilled and matured at The James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington near the foot of the Bain’s Kloof Pass. The beauty of the pass and the extraordinary craftsmanship of Andrew Geddes Bain, the pioneer road builder who built the pass by hand in 1853, is the inspiration behind this South African whisky.

The Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky is available nationwide and retails for about R249

NEW ERA FOR SOUTH AFRICAN WHISKY – South African Whisky News

Jeff Green new distillery manager of JSD edit

NEW ERA FOR SA WHISKY

Jeff Green has been appointed as the new distillery manager of the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington taking over the helm from Andy Watts after 25 years. Jeff has been working at the distillery as process manager and distiller since 2009.

Andy will now take lead responsibility for the entire whisky portfolio of Distell as the global head of whisky intrinsic for the Centre of Excellence, a new department created by Distell to focus on the process, quality and style of products across its range of wines, spirits, ciders and other ready-to-drinks.

He will in addition to providing strategic guidance to the production of the range of Three Ships Whiskies and Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky, made at the James Sedgwick Distillery, be responsible for the company’s Scottish whisky portfolio which includes Bunnahabhain, Deanston, Tobermory, Black Bottle and Scottish Leader.

Andy says this new chapter in his career is very exciting and one he will embrace wholeheartedly.

“It will be very difficult to not have the lead responsibility anymore for the James Sedgwick Distillery family and the 24/7 operation of the site, but I couldn’t have left the reins in more capable hands than that of Jeff and I will be supporting him throughout this transition as best I can.”

“I look forward in taking on the challenges of helping craft the production of our world-class brands along with our world-class teams already in place and focusing on innovation and bringing to life some of my work in progress whiskies at the James Sedgwick Distillery.”

Andy will continue to work closely alongside the South African marketing team as the master distiller of Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky and Three Ships range of whiskies. He leaves for the USA in two weeks time to continue the roll-out of Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky into two more states.

Jeff, who has worked alongside Andy for the past six years, taking lead responsibility for mashing, fermentation and distillation, is set to continue the legacy that Andy leaves behind.

“It is an incredible honour to be appointed as distillery manager, only the 7th in the 130 year history of the distillery. I have the deepest respect and appreciation for what Andy has achieved during his tenure, not only shaping the way whisky is made in South Africa, but also creating a demand for our whiskies abroad with the incredible international awards he managed to garner over the years.

“It certainly is big shoes to fill, but I’m looking forward to taking on the challenge of catapulting South African whisky to the next level!”

Jeff has always had a keen interest in the latest food and beverage trends. He completed his Masters in Food Science before starting his career in beer, wine and cider-making. Ironically, it was his love of science that brought him to the making of whisky a few years later in 2009, when he joined the SA whisky team.

Kilchoman 100% Islay Launches 6th Edition – Scotch Whisky News

AA Kilchoman

50% ABV Bourbon Barrel Matured
Kilchoman 100% Islay

Kilchoman, Islay’s Farm Distillery, is set to launch the 6th edition of its 100% Islay range. Every part of the production process takes place at the distillery from growing the barley to bottling. Kilchoman’s 100% Islay is a truly unique single malt. No other distillery can claim to complete all parts of the whisky-making process.

The folks at Kilchoman distillery, nestled in the outbuildings of Rockside Farm on the west coast of Islay, work throughout the year to grow, malt, distill, mature and bottle Kilchoman’s unique single malt using traditional farm distilling techniques not seen on Islay for generations:

“When we first set out to build Kilchoman, the ambition was to create a small-scale distillery producing exclusively for single malt using barely grown and malted on-site as was once the norm for many distilleries.”-Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder and Managing Director.

This, the 6th edition of the annually released limited edition, is a vatting of fresh and refill ex-Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels filled in 2010 and bottled in 2016. This latest edition will be the most mature 100% Islay to have been released to date. Produced exclusively from barley grown at the distillery, the 100% Islay range has a lighter peating level compared to the rest of the Kilchoman range, creating a uniquely fresh and distinct style of Islay single malt.

Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder and Managing Director: “We expect Kilchoman fans will enjoy the 6th Edition, the 100% Islay expressions have come along significantly in recent years, sourcing our bourbon barrels from one US producer has a significant impact on the quality of the whisky at what is a relatively young age.”

Founded in 2005, Kilchoman is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland and was the first distillery to be built on Islay for over 124 years. Today, Kilchoman is the only independently owned Islay distillery.

Tasting Notes: Kilchoman 100% Islay 6th Edition
Colour: Straw.
Nose: Light, fresh and vibrant with soft peat smoke.
Palate: Fresh and light with citrus and lemon notes with sweetness on the finish.
Finish: Long, clean and sweet with graceful peat smoke.

Notes
Kilchoman Distillery is a small, family run farm-distillery based on the rugged west coast of Islay. The distillery was established by Anthony Wills in 2005, the idea was to build a new distillery which took whisky production back to its roots. Anthony and wife Kathy have now been joined by their three sons: George, James and Peter.

Kilchoman produces its 100% Islay single malt from barley which is grown in fields surrounding the distillery and completes every stage of the whisky-making process at the distillery, including traditional floor malting. Kilchoman is the only distillery in Scotland to do this. Kilchoman is now very much a family affair:

Since the first bottling was released in 2009, Kilchoman has quickly established itself as a high quality Islay Single Malt Whisky with these notable awards:

• Kilchoman’s exceptional quality was recognised at the prestigious International Whisky Competition (IWC) when Anthony Wills was named Master Distiller of the Year 2013.
• Machir Bay was named best Islay Whisky under 12 years old at the 2015 Spirits Business Whisky Masters, 100% Islay and Loch Gorm also won Gold Medals in the same competition.
• Machir Bay was also recently awarded a Gold Medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) with Loch Gorm being awarded a Silver Outstanding Medal and 100% Islay a Silver at the prestigious awards.
• Kilchoman won Malt Advocates Artisan Whisky of the Year 2011, only three years after the first bottling was released.

Announcing Whisky Connoisseur® – The Ultimate Travel Accessory for Whisky Lovers – Whisky News

AA WC1

Announcing Whisky Connoisseur® – The Ultimate Travel Accessory for Whisky Lovers.

Whisky Connoisseur® Travel Kits allow you to Sip, Save and Savour while drinking responsibly. First conceived in a “Eureka moment” to save precious spirits from going down the drain at his club’s whisky tastings, Whisky Connoisseur® Founder and President, Ken Jaremco, developed the perfect way to bottle up the extra drams that were being left on the table.

“My wonderful wife generously drives us to events so I can enjoy the whiskies without worrying about keeping under the legal limit, but that means she can only have a tiny sip herself. And what about those folks who attend club events alone and live too far away to take a cab home? Then, the solution dawned on us: we need to bottle up the extra whisky that we are leaving on the table. Eureka! Whisky Connoisseur® was born.”

Using their fellow West Coast Whisky Club members as an eager focus group, the Jaremcos developed a series of prototypes and quickly discovered this was a unique niche that needed to be filled. The response was overwhelming. Most of the feedback was focused towards responsible drinking: sharing a dram at an event and packaging up the majority to sip in the comfort of home.

Ken and Lou worked painstakingly to develop a kit worthy of the concept of a whisky connoisseur and to pay homage to whisky history and its skilled producers. Each component was built on a central theme of connoisseur quality and how each subtle nuance would contribute to the overall feeling when tasting whisky with friends.

Finally, after fine-tuning the details over many shared drams, three unique Whisky Connoisseur® kits were perfected, each suited for different situations: the Travel Kit, which comes in Deluxe Leather or stylish and rugged Duck Cotton Canvas; the Share-A-Dram Kit, ideal for transporting spirits to share with friends; and the Master Class Kit, perfect for when you attend a tasting or distillery tour and don’t want to leave any of the special sips behind.

Feedback to the Whisky Connoisseur® kits has been extraordinarily positive. “Many folks say that the kits are such a simple idea yet so useful,” Ken Jaremco explains. “Whether at a club tasting event or a whisky festival with master classes, you can enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded aficionados without compromising your gentlemanly/ladylike ethics or behaviour. The kits are a godsend. Not a single drop of the precious spirit goes down the drain. Good for the environment, good for the pocket book, good for the conscience and good for the soul.”

Each kit includes pharmaceutical-grade glass bottles with stoppers, a self-venting, no-spill funnel, and a Sample Ledger Booklet with perforated pages. The travel kits feature imported Glencairn® tasting glasses, and the Deluxe Leather kit includes a handsome Whisky Connoisseur® Tasting Journal with handy “Tips to Tasting Whisky” written by Ken Jaremco, perfect for rookie whisky tasters as well as those with more experience.

With the launch of the Whisky Connoisseur® series, the Jaremcos’ original “simple idea” is now set to transform the niche whisky accessories market. It is the perfect travel buddy to pack along on a fishing trip, for the cabin après ski, after golf in your AirBnB, on a business trip, or even for a picnic in your own town. Bottle a dram of your favourite whiskies and tuck the kit into your luggage or travel gear—Whisky Connoisseur® kits are multi-functional, meant to be taken along anywhere and everywhere for a taste of home away from home.

Here are some testimonials that speak to Whisky Connoisseur®’s utility and convenience:

I can’t imagine a better way to travel with, share and/or enjoy whisky than with my Whisky Connoisseur® kits. They really are ‘a Dram come true.’”

  • Dave Mason, President, West Coast Whisky Society “Great idea and great kit – I never realized how much I needed this until I got one! It is now in regular use to swap whiskies with friends and family, allowing us to ‘try before we buy’ any new whisky or to trade some of the more elite whiskies from our collections. It also goes on distillery toursvery useful for when generous measures are on offer (e.g. Lagavulin Warehouse Tour) as it allows me to taste some and take some homeand, when taking my turn at the driving, I just bottle the full samples to enjoy later. The ledger and tags make it simple to ensure that nothing gets mixed up. This kit makes a wonderful present for any keen whisky drinker.”
  • Ian R, North East England. Needless to say, these kits are the ideal gift for the whisky connoisseur in your life. Perfect for Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, birthdays or Christmas, or as a special gift for someone who is going on a “bucket list” trip to visit distilleries in Scotland, Whisky Connoisseur® solves that age-old dilemma of what to buy for “someone who has everything.”

Whisky Connoisseur “Our Story”

AA WC1AA WC6

OUR STORY

Let me introduce ourselves…

We’re Ken and Lou Jaremco, and we’ve been partners in life and business for 40 years. We’ve traveled the world in pursuit of business opportunities and for pleasure, and after decades in the manufacturing business we think we’ve found the perfect retirement project. Best of all, it’s all about whisky: our love of whisky, our friendships with the people we’ve met through whisky, and our desire to save precious drams of whisky form going down the drain.

My first exposure to scotch was J&B in the late ‘70s. I developed a taste for it and decided I should explore other brands, which at that time were limited to blended scotch. One Christmas, Lou bought me a bottle of Chivas Regal – it was as good a gift as a man could ask for. I drank blended scotch for many years and continue to do so as the mood strikes me.

Then, one fall day, our neighbours Michael and Barbara Smith changed our lives forever when Mike introduced me to single malt scotch. This was nearly 20 years after my introduction to blended scotch and I never looked back. Over the years that followed, Mike and I enjoyed hundreds of different single malts and never found a bad one. Some are better than others and some have an acquired taste. There are so many ways to describe them: smoky, peaty, sherry, oaky, hints of citrus, vanilla, spices, chocolate, coffee, honey-flavoured, and so on. At first, these are difficult to detect, but over time taste profiles became easier to identify. Mike shared freely his vast collection of knowledge and spirits in the manner in which it was meant to be shared: unreservedly and without conditions.

In 2004, I joined the West Coast Whisky Society, a club with about 100 members based in Vancouver, BC. It was a new and wonderful experience to share a dram with like-minded friends in an environment where chitchat and precious spirits were abundant. The club presented many a good whisky during tasting events. At first, Lou endured my desire to attend, and—the wonderful wife she is—drove me to and from these events so I could enjoy the whiskies without worrying about keeping under the legal limit. But somewhere along the way, she also developed a fondness for some of the spirits, especially the sherry or port finishes.

This presented a dilemma: who would drive us home? Most of the events were too far for us to take a cab. So Lou would have a tiny sip and the rest went to waste. I can’t count the number of times we had to leave drams on the table because of this. Then, the solution dawned on us: we needed a way to bottle up the extra whisky that we were leaving on the table. Eureka! The Whisky Connoisseur® kit was born. We quickly developed a prototype and found that the more we used the kit, the more uses we found for it. The next step was to try it out on the perfect test market: our fellow whisky club members.

We built a basic kit with collection bottles and some foam inserts shaped to hold our whisky society monogrammed glasses, added a funnel, and presented it to our whisky club members. The response was overwhelming. The first batch of 90 kits sold out within a few months. Word of mouth was infectious. At every meeting I would get bombarded with inquiries. The fun came from hearing the comments from members about what a good idea it was. I especially love hearing the glowing reviews from the customers who continue to bring their kits to society tasting events and practice responsible drinking on a club-wide scale.

Since then, we have painstakingly improved and modified our original design based on feedback from that early prototype, resulting in the Whisky Connoisseur® Travel Kits, which come in Deluxe Leather or stylish Duck Cotton Canvas Fabric cases, the Share-A-Dram Kit, which is ideal for transporting spirits to share with friends, and the Master Class Kit, perfect for when you attend a tasting and don’t want to leave any of the special sips behind.

Each component was built on a central theme of connoisseur quality and how it contributed to the overall feeling when tasting whisky with friends. Every element had to reflect the history of the whisky industry in the old world. It also had to pay homage to the skilled people in the industry: the coopers who make the barrels, the stillmen who craft the spirts, the distillery managers who never lose the vision of pioneers before them, and the global ambassadors who travel the world plying the trade of well-made spirits to the masses.

Our whisky club members were invaluable in providing feedback, most of which focused on responsible drinking, which meant sharing a dram at an event and packing up the majority to sip in the comfort of your home. Many commented that the kits were such a simple idea, yet so useful. Sip. Save. Savour.

The more Lou and I used our kit, the more we found places to take it on our travels. So much so that now we bring two kits, one for Lou and one for myself. Like they say, double your pleasure – double your fun. Our whisky kits are now an integral part of any travel plans we make, and at club tasting events, not a single drop of the precious spirit goes down the drain. Good for the environment, good for the pocket book, good for the conscience and good for the soul.

I have sampled many whiskies, each unique unto themselves. It’s an adventure to be sure: travelling to places around the world, meeting and chatting with folks who also enjoy a good dram, all wrapped in a special spirit called whisky. My friend Mike has since departed, but every dram I raise in his name brings back fond memories of the good times we had. Mike, you’d never believe the adventure we’re on to now. Whisky Travel Kits, who knew?

In the spirit of all the friends we’ve met along the way, and to you, our fellow whisky connoisseurs, Slainte Mhath!

Whiskystats Launches its AndroidTM-App

Graz, Austria – Jul. 13, 2016

Whiskystats-App_01

Whiskystats.net, the blog and database dedicated to analyze the secondary whisky market, has launched its Android TM-App on the Google Play TM Store. The Whiskystats-App is a mobile gateway to the Whiskystats database, which currently covers 17.000 scotch and Japanese single malt whiskies and corresponding 200.000 price observations.

“This mobile companion makes it even simpler to track the value of your personal whiskies or to keep an eye on the prices of the bottles on your wanted list”, says Johannes MOOSBRUGGER, the founder of Whiskystats.net. “Since the number of visits from mobile devices on our website is on a steady rise, it is only consequent to offer a native application for smartphone users. Now, the latest auction results are only one tap away.”

Compared to the mobile version of the website, app-users profit from the native navigation, push notifications on the latest price updates and an improved data visualization. Whiskystats members can continue to use their existing profiles on the app and manage their personal collections on the app and on the website simultaneously. New users need to register (for free) in order access the database. To enable a seamlessly transition between website and smartphone the app requires a working internet connection.

Whiskystats is the biggest public accessible whisky auction price database. The website went online in the end of 2015 and continues to gain attention ever since. The goal of the Whiskystats-Project is to “bring more transparency to the secondary whisky market”.

The Whiskystats-App can be found on the Google PlayTM Store using this link.
