BOWMORE® ISLAY SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY RELEASES

BOWMORE® 1966 50 YEARS OLD

FROM ONE OF THE WORLD’S OLDEST SCOTCH MATURATION WAREHOUSES

The Third Edition From The Bowmore®

50 Years Old VAULT LEGENDS COLLECTION Debuts As The Rarest Expression Yet

Islay, Scotland (November 28, 2017) Bowmore® Islay Single Malt Whisky, the oldest licensed distillery on Scotland’s isle of Islay, announces the global release of BOWMORE® 1966 50 YEARS OLD, a rare and refined whisky from a golden year in Bowmore’s heritage. Only one cask of this remarkable spirit was set aside in 1966 – the same year that Bowmore Single Malt Scotch was first officially bottled. It has spent 50 years aging in Bowmore’s No. 1 Vaults, one of the world’s oldest Scotch maturation warehouses. Only 74 bottles of this rare whisky have been produced for the world and this December, a portion of those will be available in the U.S. It is the third edition in the Bowmore 50 Years Old VAULT LEGENDS COLLECTION with a suggested retail price of $30,000 (750ml/41.5% ABV).

Bowmore 1966 50 Years Old celebrates a unique year for the Islay distillery. It was distilled in 1966 – the same year that Bowmore Single Malt Scotch Whisky was first officially bottled and this cask gem was nurtured over the years by legendary Bowmore Distillery Manager Eddie MacAffer, who joined Bowmore distillery that very same year.

David Turner, Bowmore Distillery Manager, comments: “To this day Eddie MacAffer is renowned at the Bowmore distillery for his passion and knowledge, which he so proudly showcased throughout his 50 years at the distillery. I am honored to celebrate such a pivotal year in Bowmore’s history and launch this incredible whisky, which was not only nurtured by Eddie himself but also created the very year Eddie joined us. The Bowmore 1966 50 Years Old demonstrates the rewards of our meticulous aging process and proves the unparalleled quality of the whiskies coming from our passionate and dedicated distillery team. This single malt whisky is set to be treasured among Bowmore fans and will undoubtedly build upon Bowmore’s legendary collectors status.”

This remarkably rare limited edition bottling has, over its 50-year maturation in the No. 1 Vaults, unlocked the exotic fruit tastes distinctive of 1960s Bowmore whiskies that have been savored by connoisseurs worldwide and are renowned in some of the most collectible Bowmore expressions.

Bowmore 1966 50 Years Old is the third expression to debut from the Bowmore 50 Year Old VAULT LEGENDS COLLECTION, a series honoring the rare single malts that were first distilled and began aging in the No. 1 Vaults during the 1960s, an era known for producing some of Bowmore’s most collectible bottlings. Bowmore 1961 50 Years Old was introduced in December 2016 in the U.S. and Black Bowmore 1964 50 Years Old was introduced in June 2017 in the U.S., and demand for both has been extraordinary.

THE 1966 BOWMORE BOTTLE AND WOOD CASE

Sitting at the pinnacle of Bowmore’s portfolio, Bowmore 1966 50 Years Old is presented in a handmade crystal decanter boasting sterling silver adornments and is housed in a hand crafted cabinet made from quality Scottish oak. At the center of the each cabinet lies five hand laid silver tree rings depicting the five decades of the rare vintage’s maturation. The characterful nature of the Scottish oak means each individual bottling will be entirely unique with no two bottles being the same, echoing the rare and unique features of the Bowmore 1966 50 Years Old.

TASTING NOTES

This exceptional expression has been aged for 50 years in a single ex-bourbon hogshead cask, developing a complex flavor and beautiful golden amber hue. On the nose, Bowmore 1966 50 Years Old offers elegant bursts of lychee, pineapple, and watermelon, developing into light floral notes and a dry finish on the palate. It is perfectly balanced with a silky whisper of smooth syrup.

ABOUT BOWMORE®

Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the oldest licensed distillery on Islay, one of the Scottish isles which make up the region known as the ‘Islands’ in the lexicon of Whisky. The other regions are the Highlands, Speyside and the Lowlands. Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore is no exception; the malt is carefully smoked in a peat-fired kiln, using skills handed down from generation to generation to craft a perfectly balanced Single Malt.

Bowmore adheres to traditional production methods which helps to shape the character of its single malts. Today, it prides itself as one of the rare distilleries which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by a traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery. Water for the whiskies is specially drawn from the Laggan River, with its peaty overtones, the same Islay peat that fires the malt-drying kiln.

Bowmore Distillery’s proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of its spirit. The legendary Bowmore No. 1 Vaults, one of the world’s oldest Scotch maturation warehouses, is where some of the whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault’s sea-facing wall. They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon and sherry, gradually developing rich and mellow flavors. It is this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore Single Malt Scotch Whiskies.

Bowmore domestic product range: Bowmore 12 Years Old, 15 Years Old, 18 Years Old and 25 Years Old.

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Named 2017 Whisky of the Year by Whisky Advocate

BARDSTOWN, KY – Elijah Craig Barrel Proof was named Whisky Advocate’s 2017 Whisky of the Year, featured in the Winter 2017 magazine issue. Elijah Craig was chosen from among hundreds of samples submitted globally throughout the year. Whisky Advocate’s Top 20 are chosen each year from a collection of the highest-rated whiskeys nominated by the Buying Guide reviewers, and ranked based on quality, value and availability. Read and watch the full review on Whisky Advocate’s website here.

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof previously earned spirits industry acclaim in 2017 as a World Whiskies Awards’ category winner, receiving Double Gold and Best Small Batch Bourbon – 11 Years and Older at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, 95 Points at F. Paul Pacult’s Ultimate Spirits Challenge, and Gold at the SIP Awards. As a small batch, 12-Year-Old Bourbon bottled straight from the barrel three times per year, the nose, taste, and finish are preserved in their simplest form, just as Master Distiller Denny Potter tastes them in Heaven Hill’s central Kentucky rickhouses. Originally scoring a 94 in the Summer 2017 issue of Whisky Advocate magazine, Fred Minnick described Elijah Craig Barrel Proof as a “Pure bliss; must sip.”

“Elijah Craig is an essential part of American Whiskey’s history, and we’re proud to embrace that legacy,” said Master Distiller Denny Potter. “As a nurturer of storied brands, Heaven Hill Distillery has been lifting America’s spirit for more than 81 years.”

The signature Bourbon bears the name of Reverend Elijah Craig, a Bourbon pioneer who is credited with being the first distiller to age his whiskey in charred oak barrels, or the Father of Bourbon. Heaven Hill Distillery preserves the Bourbon making traditions developed by Elijah Craig over two hundred years ago, where local corn and grains are milled and mixed with limestone-rich Kentucky spring water, then fermented and distilled. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is available nationally in limited quantities.

About Elijah Craig Bourbon
The Elijah Craig family of Bourbons is led by the flagship Elijah Craig Small Batch, made exclusively from batches of 200 barrels or less of 8 to 12-Year-Old Bourbon. First brought to market in 1986, Heaven Hill’s Master Distillers were selecting a small number of barrels of the finest Bourbon to make Elijah Craig long before the term “small batch” even existed. It is this attention to detail and superb craftsmanship that give Elijah Craig an ideal balance of age, robust body and rich flavor. Its accolades have included a “Double Gold Medal” at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and two-time “Best of the Best” Bourbon by Whisky Magazine.

This signature spirit bears the name of the Rev. Elijah Craig, “The Father of Bourbon” who established his distillery in 1789. He is credited with being the first distiller to age his Kentucky whiskey in charred oak barrels. The clear, unaged corn liquor became transformed into a bold amber liquid with a distinctively smooth flavor that makes Bourbon what it is. Produced by Heaven Hill Distillery and one of its bestselling Bourbons by case volume, it is complemented by Elijah Craig 12-Year-Old Barrel Proof, Elijah Craig 18-Year-Old Single Barrel and Elijah Craig 23-Year-Old Single Barrel in the portfolio. GLENWYVIS DISTILLERY IN THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS SET FOR COMMUNITY OPENING ON ST ANDREW’S DAY 2017 – Scotch Whisky News

A GW STILL

GLENWYVIS DISTILLERY IN THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS SET FOR COMMUNITY OPENING ON ST ANDREW’S DAY 2017

Scotland’s first 100% community-owned and 100% green energy-powered distillery

GlenWyvis Distillery, based in the historic town of Dingwall in the Scottish Highlands, is today celebrating the official opening of the world’s first 100% community-owned whisky distillery. The landmark event on St Andrew’s Day (30.11.17) follows a highly successful crowdfunding campaign and a two-year push to build a distillery that is not only community-owned but also 100% powered by renewable energy.

The community opening, will turn the spotlight of the whisky world on Dingwall, and will be attended by invited guests from the local community and some of the 3,000+ members of the GlenWyvis Distillery Community Benefit Society. One lucky member will be been selected by ballot to ‘cut the tape’ in the stillhouse to mark the occasion.

The new distillery will re-instate the iconic craft of whisky distilling* back into the area, some 90 years after the last local distillery closed. It will be a truly historic moment for GlenWyvis and the town of Dingwall. The journey began with the GlenWyvis launching a highly successful community share offer in 2016 – raising £2.6 million to support its vision for the future. The project has since developed well beyond the greenfield site, to a fully built distillery with its first master distiller and support staff all set for the first run of spirit.

With whisky production beginning, the GlenWyvis team has been working around the clock to prepare the distillery for the official opening on St Andrew’s Day and also to bring the distillation of GlenWyvis gin home to Dingwall in early 2018. This will mark the next exciting phase and establish GlenWyvis as one of a select number of dual whisky and gin distilleries in Scotland.

GlenWyvis Managing Director and Founder, John McKenzie, commented: “From the outset we have envisaged the project as much more than a distillery. We recognised this was an opportunity for all social investors to help reinvigorate the town of Dingwall and build on our whisky heritage* through community-ownership.

“We have undertaken a massive outreach programme to build interest and investment in the project both locally and further afield. Our aim has always been to produce both high quality Scottish whisky and craft gin – and to attract more visitors to the area. We are exploring options for distillery tours and a proposed GlenWyvis visitor experience that will help to benefit the community and develop Dingwall in to a leading craft distillery town in Scotland, and a quality destination on the North Coast 500 tourist route.”

GlenWyvis Chairman, David O’Connor added: “We are now all set to move from commissioning to whisky production, and we are all extremely proud that this ambitious two-year project has reached the stage of the official opening today.

“This is a remarkable community project and the support has been overwhelming. With our second open share offer still ongoing, we have now raised over £3 million in a very short time and I believe that is testament to the enduring appeal of Scottish whisky.

“Over 60% of our members come from the local Highland area, and we’re using barley sourced from the local farmers coop, Highland Grain. I’m immensely proud of the entire GlenWyvis team and we are all thrilled to be officially opening the distillery on St Andrew’s Day.”

The newly appointed Master Distiller, Duncan Tait, will oversee final commissioning and the first the run of new make spirit in and is inspired by the unique possibilities this creates.

Duncan added: “To join a brand-new distillery and shape the flavour profiles of a new single malt from the start is a dream come true. The opening event marks the start of the next stage of this truly inspirational project. After today, we get down to the hard work of distilling a whisky that will put GlenWyvis and Dingwall on the international spirit map.”

Notes to Editors

Second Share offer investment – still open

GlenWyvis already had some 2,600 members who invested £2.6 million in the original share offer in 2016. A second open share offer has brought that total to over 3,150 members – with almost 600 new members investing some £340,000 in less than four months. The open share issue was launched to capitalise on continued interest from locals and visitors alike. The minimum investment is £250 for all investors.

*Whisky has been made in the Dingwall area for centuries. The original Ferintosh Distillery was established just east of Dingwall by the Forbes of Culloden family in 1690. Ferintosh is one of the oldest recorded whisky distilleries and produced a whisky much loved throughout Scotland. Indeed, it was a favourite of Scotland’s great bard Rabbie Burns, who lamented: “Thee, Ferintosh! O sadly lost! Scotland lament frae coast to coast!” … on its closure in 1784. Two other local distilleries, Ben Wyvis in Dingwall and Glenskiach in nearby Evanton, both closed in 1926 – but their names are now remembered with the opening of GlenWyvis Distillery in 2017.

Irish Whiskey Association and Irish Distillers host industry mentoring event in

Midleton Distillery

Cooperage and Maturation workshop led by Irish Distillers’ experts

Midleton, Cork, Staff from 15 Irish whiskey distilleries took part in a landmark mentoring event in Irish Distillers’ Midleton Distillery as part of the Irish Whiskey Association’s (IWA) mentoring programme last week. The IWA mentoring programme involves established global Irish whiskey players such as Irish Distillers and Bushmills offering support to newer market entrants.

Participants in the programme were provided with information and guidance on creating the finest quality Irish whiskey. Through practical demonstrations with established global Irish whiskey companies, participants learn the distillation, maturation and blending secrets that have driven the phenomenal success of this category on the global stage and that has seen Irish whiskey become the fastest growing spirits category in the world.

The workshop on cooperage and maturation aimed to provide new and recent entrants to the Irish whiskey industry with the opportunity to learn first-hand from some of the most experienced craftsmen in the Irish whiskey industry. Elements of the programme included sessions on wood purchasing, the skills of cooperage, cask handling, and the principles of maturation and blending.

William Lavelle, Head of the Irish Whiskey Association stated: “Ireland’s whiskey renaissance has seen the number of operational distilleries increase from 4 to 18 in just four years. Increased competition is very welcome and is helping drive growth and it’s great to see that the competition in our industry is being matched by an amazing sense of solidarity. Our ongoing mentoring programme and last week’s workshop is testament to this solidarity which has at its core a commitment to maintaining the high standards which form part of the rich and long history of Irish whiskey distilling.”

Kevin O’Gorman, Head of Maturation at the Midleton Distillery, stated: “Here at Irish Distillers, we’re always eager to work with people who share our passion for Irish whiskey. Over the years, we’ve always gone out of our way to work with anyone who wanted advice or mentoring on whiskey projects and it’s great to be able to collaborate with even more people thanks to the IWA mentoring programme. Days like this when we get to share insights into our cooperage and maturation approach allow us all to build the positive culture of collaboration that is so prevalent within the industry. Seeing the passion of those working in the emerging Irish whiskey distilleries first-hand is invigorating and knowing that the future of Irish whiskey is in safe hands is truly inspiring.”

Keshav Prakash, the founder-curator of The Vault, inducted of The Keepers of the Quaich – Whisky News

Keshav

Keshav Prakash, the founder-curator of The Vault, was recently inducted as a life member of The Keepers of the Quaich, an international society which was established by the Scotch Whisky industry to celebrate the outstanding commitment of those who produce and promote the world’s finest distilled spirit. This prestigious society takes its name from the traditional two-handled drinking cup which is described in the ancient Gaelic language of Scotland as a `cuach’ or Quaich, a vessel long associated with friendship and the enjoyment of Scotch Whisky.

With only a limited number of people inducted as Keepers each year to honor their exceptional contribution, the new Keepers must have worked for a minimum of five years in the industry and their nomination is by virtue of industry recognition of their personal contribution to Scotch Whisky. In the last five years, Keshav has diligently worked to create access to produce from boutique independent distilleries, bridging the gap for handcrafted spirits in India, especially in the world of fine whiskies, enriching the experience of whisky connoisseurs and enthusiasts. If Springbank, Benromach and Edradour represent the legendary traditional Scottish malts, Kilchoman, Wolfburn and the award-winning expressions from Compass Box represent the growing contemporary and innovative twist.

To date, just over 2,600 men and women from over 100 countries have received the honor of becoming the ‘Keeper of the Quaich’, a permission into the much guarded hall of fame. `Scotch Whisky was, and remains, the first global spirit and Keepers of the Quaich exists to recognize and celebrate the exceptional contribution of people working in all aspects of the industry, all over the world’ said Peter Prentice, Chairman of the Society.

New Keepers are inducted at a private ceremony held in the Scottish Highlands at Blair Castle, the ancient historic home of the Earls and Dukes of Atholl. This year, it was on the 9th of October, 2017.

The 700-year-old iconic Blair Castle with its Scottish baronial architecture, has been the home of the Atholl family for over seven centuries and has had a rich and diverse history. Serving as the quintessential center for this award ceremony, the arrival ceremony of the new Keepers, Masters and patrons of the society was marked by the grandly decorated castle and the great highland bagpipers music in their traditional highland dress. This was the beginning of more than just an award ceremony. It was a glimpse into the well-choreographed Royal Scottish lifestyle.

The induction ceremony is a grand and confidential ritual, and once this ceremony is complete, the Keepers and Masters are gently led into the glamorous banquet that unfolds in the stunning ballroom of the castle, and this year the prestigious event was addressed by the well-known Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin who spoke about how the sharing of spirits with near and dear ones, marks the building of the best memories.

When Keshav shared the table with the ultimate knowledge house of whiskies, Charles MacLean, Master of the Quaich, a fine gentleman and a gospel to whisky lovers across the world, he knew that this wonderful journey had only just begun. After all, there was the `Master of the Quaich’, and that involves a further ten years of working on his vision – to make The Vault a go-to place for fine spirits experiences, in which the world of Scottish whiskies will continue to play a significant role.

Trivia about the banquet:

Many guests wear traditional quilts made from the special society Tartan.

All guests line up outside the castle and are invited as a couple or individually to walk the red carpet with bagpipers on either side of the carpet.

Red Carpet photography followed by a group photograph once inside.

Those getting inducted and their guest are then led to the VIP reception on the upper level.

THE MIDLETON DAIR GHAELACH FAMILY BLOSSOMS WITH NEW ‘BLUEBELL FOREST’ – Irish Whiskey News

THE MIDLETON DAIR GHAELACH FAMILY BLOSSOMS WITH NEW ‘BLUEBELL FOREST’

Irish Distillers has unveiled the next chapter in its Virgin Irish Oak Collection of Single Pot Still Irish Whiskeys; Midleton Dair Ghaelach Bluebell Forest edition. This exceptional offering has been finished in barrels made from Irish oak grown in the Bluebell Forest of Castle Blunden Estate in County Kilkenny, imparting a true and unique flavour of Ireland.

Dair Ghaelach, which is Gaelic for ‘Irish oak’, is the result of an eight-year exploration by the expert production team at the Midleton Distillery, County Cork, into using native oak to mature Irish whiskey and follows the release of Midleton Dair Ghaelach Grinsell’s Wood in February 2015.

In collaboration with expert forestry consultant, Paddy Purser, the Irish Distillers team of Kevin O’Gorman, Head of Maturation, and Billy Leighton, Head Blender, chose Bluebell Forest on Castle Blunden Estate to provide the oak for the second edition in the Midleton Dair Ghaelach series. Each bottle can be traced back to one of six individual 130-year-old oak trees that were carefully felled in the Bluebell Forest in May of 2013.

Kevin O’Gorman, Head of Maturation at Midleton Distillery, comments: “It is a joy to be able to showcase more of our experimentation with maturation in Irish oak through the release of Midleton Dair Ghaelach Bluebell Forest. The naturally sweet compounds found in Irish oak work in perfect harmony with this whiskey to deliver milk chocolate and honeycomb on the nose, a beautifully round and silky-smooth mouth feel and a long, pot still finish.

“The nuances in flavour in the two editions of Midleton Dair Ghaelach come from our native wood, and offer whiskey fans a true flavour of Ireland – the range has provenance unlike any Irish whiskey before it and we look forward to exploring more of Ireland’s woodlands further in the years to come.”

Bluebell Forest is found among the historic stone walls of Castle Blunden Estate in County Kilkenny. Since the 1600s, generations of the Blunden Family have watched over a stand of Irish oak trees with a carpet of luminescent bluebells covering the forest floor.

The carefully felled oak from these woods imparts its character and nuances into Midleton Dair Ghaelach Bluebell Forest to create an intrinsically Irish whiskey with historical provenance, traceability and a clear link to the sustainability and rejuvenation of Irish oak.

To craft the oak into barrels, fellow artisans at the Maderbar sawmills in Baralla, north-west Spain, used the quarter-sawing process to cut the trees into staves, which were then transferred to the Antonio Páez Lobato cooperage in Jerez. After drying for 15 months, the staves were worked into 29 Irish oak Hogshead casks and given a light toast.

The whiskey, made up of a selection of Midleton’s classic rich and spicy pot still distillates matured for between 12 and 23 years in American oak barrels, was then filled into the Irish oak Hogshead casks and diligently nosed and tasted each month by Leighton and O’Gorman. After a year and a half, the pair judged that the whiskey had reached the perfect balance between the spicy single post still Irish whiskey and Irish oak characteristics.

Bottled at cask strength, between 55.30% to 56.30% ABV, and without the use of chill filtration, Midleton Dair Ghaelach Bluebell Forest is available from November 2017 in markets, including the US, Canada, Ireland, France and the UK at the recommended selling price of $280 per 70cl.

NOTES

Midleton Dair Ghaelach Bluebell Forest tasting notes:

Nose: Rich pot still spices are elevated by the clipped tannins of the toasted Irish oak. Fresh woodland character mingles with faint vanilla, giving the succulence of zesty pink grapefruit and pineapple along with ripe berries and green banana. The Irish oak influence imparts milk chocolate and honeycomb sweetness
Taste: Beautifully round and silky smooth with naturally sweet compounds from the Irish oak in harmony with the pot still spices. A touch of mango and kiwi bring some fruit undertones as the prickle of clove and cinnamon add their voice
Finish: Exceptionally long with soft sweet spices finally giving way to the proud Irish oak

A NIGHT OUT WITH DAVID BECKHAM…IN REVERSE – Scotch Whisky News

Haig Club Leave As You Arrived - David Beckham still 2

A NIGHT OUT WITH DAVID BECKHAM…IN REVERSE

New film launches the HAIG CLUB Scotch Whisky #LeaveAsYouArrived campaign

LONDON, NOVEMBER 14 2017: Today Diageo releases Leave as You Arrived, a new film from HAIG CLUB as part the brand’s commitment to responsible drinking. The film, featuring global icon and HAIG CLUB business partner David Beckham, marks the next progressive step in Diageo’s determination to bring responsible drinking to the forefront of consumer thinking in innovative and authentic ways.

Like HAIG CLUB, the 60-second film is designed to be different: directed by Grammy Award winning Swedish director, Jonas Akerlund the film plays out in reverse – the end of the film is in fact the beginning and shows David Beckham and his friends as immaculately put together leaving the bar as when they arrived.

Ronan Beirne, Global Brand Director said:  “Responsible drinking is an integral part of the HAIG CLUB philosophy and we have a shared belief with our business partner, David Beckham, about quality over quantity and the importance of drinking in moderation. #LeaveAsYouArrived was designed to showcase the benefits of drinking in moderation on a night out. HAIG CLUB believes that looking as good leaving the bar as when you arrived, is the epitome of style.”

David Beckham said: “There are many reasons why I wanted to partner with Diageo on HAIG CLUB, and one of them is their commitment to responsible drinking. Jonas did a very nice job bringing our idea to life with this new film.”

Carolyn Panzer, Global Alcohol in Society Director, Diageo, said: “Being stylish and in control go hand-in-hand. This campaign shows just how aspirational drinking in moderation has become, and is all about encouraging adults who choose to drink, to do so responsibly. Encouraging moderation is not in conflict with our goals as an alcohol producer: in fact, it lines up very clearly with our values and aims as a business. We want to lead people towards drinking better, not more, and this campaign is a powerful example of how our brands are helping us to do that.”

#LeaveAsYouArrived is part of HAIG CLUB’s ongoing commitment to responsible drinking and will continue to roll out globally across social media with additional exclusive content designed to celebrate drinking in moderation. This will include content from cities across the world showcasing real people in #LeaveAsYouArrived moments.
