Old Perth Launches Limited Edition Amontillado Cask Expression – Scotch Whisky News

Old Perth Launches Limited Edition Amontillado Cask Expression

New release puts nut-forward sherry character in the spotlight

June 2025 Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers (MSWD) has unveiled its latest release today from Old Perth – a limited edition Amontillado Sherry Cask Matured Blended Malt, marking a distinctive addition to its sherry-led portfolio.

Bottled at 52.8% ABV, the expression celebrates the nuanced complexity of Amontillado sherry casks and is now available in key markets across the UK, EU and selected international territories (RRP £58).

Crafted from a bespoke blend of Speyside single malts, many sourced from distilleries still using traditional worm tub condensers, the release showcases a markedly different take on sherry cask maturation. While Oloroso and PX casks dominate the category, Amontillado offers a drier, more savoury profile, shaped by dual maturation, first under flor and then oxidatively.

Graeme Mackeddie, Master Blender at Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers, said:

“Amontillado casks offer something rare and compelling – structure, restraint, and this incredible nutty elegance. We wanted to build a whisky that captures that nuance and takes Old Perth in a slightly unexpected, but still unmistakably sherried, direction.”

The blend was initially matured in a mix of American and European oak sherry butts, along with a component drawn from Old Perth’s Solera system. The spirit was then re-racked into first fill Amontillado sherry casks – both butts and hogsheads, for a nearly three-year finishing period at the distiller’s Aberargie warehouse, followed by a final marrying phase in Amontillado wood.

The result is a layered and refined malt with notes of hazelnut, almond, dried apricot and amaretti biscuit, underpinned by subtle oxidative tones and a dry, nut-forward finish. The bottling is non-chill filtered, with a natural colour, and limited to a small batch drawn from nine hogsheads and six sherry butts.

The launch follows a strong showing for the Old Perth range at the 2025 International Wine & Spirit Competition, where the brand secured four medals. Old Perth Cask Strength earned Silver with 92 points, praised for its “velvety texture and warming spice,” while Old Perth 12 Year Old also received a Silver (90 points) for its balance of grilled oranges and syrupy berries. Both The Original and Double Sherry Wood expressions picked up Bronze medals, further reinforcing the brand’s reputation for delivering high-quality, sherried blended malts.

Glen Moray explores its smoky side with new 12 years old single malt release – Scotch Whisky News

Glen Moray explores its smoky side with new 12 years old single malt release

Glen Moray single malt Scotch whisky is tempting whisky fans to explore a distinctively different side to its classic Speyside single malt, with the unveiling today (27th May) of Glen Moray 12 Years Old Smoky.

‘Smoky Twelve’ is set to be a treat for both peat lovers and fans of Glen Moray’s famously smooth and fruity spirit – and it will make the perfect gift for dram lovers on Father’s Day (15 June).

This permanent new addition to Glen Moray’s award-winning range is crafted in the traditional way at the whisky’s historic distillery in Elgin, but uses peated barley to add subtle notes of sweet bonfire smoke to the spirit.

Tasting notes

Colour: Golden straw

Nose: gentle smoke floats over notes of vanilla and orchard fruits, lightly touched by spice.

Taste: caramelised apples and baked plums balanced by peaty undertones, with hints of oak

Finish: delightfully long, as fruity notes fade into smouldering bonfire embers and oak tannins

ABV 46.3%

Natural colour, non-chill filtered

True to Glen Moray’s reputation for exploration when it comes to the influence of wood on whisky’s flavour, the new single malt is then matured in two different types of cask: American oak for notes of vanilla and caramel with a smooth bourbon undertone; and European oak, bringing stronger vanilla flavours, with tannins, pepper, fruit and gentle spice.

The result is a very special new dram: all the appeal of Glen Moray’s wonderfully light and easy-drinking spirit imbued with the richness of peated malt and the deliciously complex flavours of maturation in two different types of wood.

As Glen Moray Global Brand Ambassador Iain Allan says, this is a dram that will delight fans of Speyside whisky and those of peated single malts in equal measure. He commented:

‘With Glen Moray Smoky 12 Years Old our distillery has bottled the best of both worlds for whisky fans. This is a classic taste of our much-loved Speyside single malt aged in an interesting mix of superb quality oak, with the added depth and smokiness of peated barley. It’s a winning combination, and whilst Glen Moray is best known for its unpeated Speyside style, I think our fans are really going to enjoy the soft, sweet bonfire notes of this very moreish and accessible new dram. There’s also incredible flavour and a peaty punch in there to appeal to the whisky world’s smoke lovers! With Father’s Day fast approaching, this is a great gift to for all the dads out there who appreciate something new to savour in their whisky collection at home.’

Glen Moray Smoky 12 Years Old is bottled in 70cl, RRP £49.99. It is available from www.masterofmalt.com and select specialist whisky retailers.

Suntory Global Spirits Gives Back to Society by Planting 7,000 Trees in Kentucky – American Whiskey News

Suntory Global Spirits Gives Back to Society by Planting 7,000 Trees in Kentucky

Our Suntory Global Spirits team recently put our company values of Growing for Good and Giving Back to Society into practice at a tree planting event in Hazard, Kentucky on April 10. This marks the fourth year of the planting initiative in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and Green Forests Work.

80 volunteers, including members of Suntory’s executive and senior leadership teams, planted 7,000 trees in the Central Appalachian Mountains, which have been stripped of trees due to being a former coal mining site.

“Our premium spirits are made with agricultural ingredients, such as grains and agave, and we rely on healthy forests and White Oak trees for the barrels that age our spirits,” said Kim Marotta, Chief Environmental Sustainability Officer and Head of Enterprise Risk Management at Suntory Global Spirits. “Given the significant role White Oak plays in our bourbon barrels, we’re committed to their regeneration. Kentucky is the heartland of our business, so we are very proud to continue supporting this annual event, along with our partners, as we work to accelerate our positive impact in our local communities.”

Kentucky is home to several of Suntory Global Spirits’ iconic brands, including Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark, and revitalizing healthy forests and land will support many more decades of whiskey making and the communities around the distilleries.

Our employees’ dedication and passion have made a profound impact in the region, contributing to planting 315,000 trees on The Nature Conservatory’s Cumberland Forest property, a key portion of the Central Appalachians and one of the most biologically rich temperate forest ecosystems in the world. The forest protects the headwaters of several rivers, ensuring clean drinking water and supporting aquatic ecosystems downstream.  Tree planting supports a healthy ecosystem with carbon sequestration, improved air quality and restored wildlife habitats in the expansive area. Conservation efforts in the Cumberland Forest are helping restore lands impacted by logging and mining and protect against future degradation and ensure long-term ecological health. To date, Suntory Global Spirits has planted over 700,000 trees.

We continue to accelerate our progress to plant more trees than harvested to make our new barrels by 2030. Learn more about our sustainability efforts here.

‘Renascence – The Revival Release’ heralds the return of London’s pioneering single malt whisky producer – English Whisky News

‘Renascence – The Revival Release’ heralds the return of London’s pioneering single malt whisky producer

The London Distillery Company (TLDC) commences a bold new chapter with the upcoming release of ‘Renascence – The Revival Release’ – the first new whisky from the trailblazing London craft distillery since its rebirth earlier this year.

Renascence (meaning the revival of something that has been dormant) has been created from the remaining TLDC casks which were produced by the distillery when it operated between 2011 and 2020. Crafted using Plumage Archer, a heritage variety of barley utilised in whisky production in the early 20th century, this new London single malt remains entirely faithful to the original spirit style produced by the company before its untimely closure.

It has been matured in a combination of refill barrels and 1st fill sherry casks, offering a distinctive, but balanced character that celebrates the distillery’s pioneering legacy, whilst showcasing its bold new future.

The revival release of 410 bottles at 58% ABV will be available exclusively from Berry Bros. & Rudd from the 6th June with an RRP of £89.00.

The London Distillery Company was established in 2011, creating the first new whisky distillery in the capital since Lea Valley Distillery closed in 1903. Founded and inspired by the city’s lost distilling heritage, this iteration of the Company operated from a small, but ambitious site in Battersea. It quickly gained recognition for its innovative approach – combining traditional production methods with a fresh, contemporary vision.

The company entering administration in 2020 and was acquired by Gleann Mòr Spirits in 2023, who brought in Matt McKay as Managing Director & Whisky Maker to lead the revitalisation of the London Distillery Company in January 2025.

Speaking of the release of Renascence, Matt said: “The London Distillery Company was ahead of its time – championing heritage, small-batch production long before the wider market was ready to embrace those values. Today, that vision aligns perfectly with the evolving tastes of modern drinkers. Renascence represents not just a new bottling from the company, but a rekindling of the distillery’s original, creative vision. It’s a privilege to carry that legacy forward and to shape the next chapter of TLDC – while we currently operate as a distillery without walls, our ambition is clear: to return to our roots in distilling and reestablish ourselves as a creative force in English whisky.”

Rob Whitehead, Spirits Buyer for Berry Bros. & Rudd added “Since hearing that there were still delicious casks of single malt London whisky from The London Distillery Company sleeping peacefully under the stewardship of Matt McKay and the team at Gleann Mòr Spirits I was keen to work together to share them with our family, friends and customers. As Spirits Buyer for Berry Bros. & Rudd, it’s a true honour to work as the trusted bridge between those who make the best drinks and those who drink them. What could be more fitting than London’s oldest spirit and wine merchant exploring London’s oldest stocks of whisky?”

Loch Lomond Group announces acquisition of The New York Distilling Company – American Whiskey News

Loch Lomond Group announces acquisition of The New York Distilling Company

Loch Lomond Group (LLG) has today announced its acquisition of The New York Distilling Company (NYDC) based in Brooklyn, New York, USA with a view to further investing in the distillation, production capabilities and visitor experience in New York, as well as growing its portfolio of award-winning brands both in the US and around the world.

Following the recent announcement of a new build distillery and visitor centre in Luss, Dumbartonshire, Scotland which will open in June 2025, the Loch Lomond Group has today confirmed its latest acquisition of the New York Distilling Company and its associated brands.

This deal will further enhance and diversify Loch Lomond Group’s portfolio of premium brands which will now importantly include American Whiskey in addition to the group’s other premium spirits.

The NYDC range will join a portfolio of award winning brands, including Loch Lomond Single Malt Scotch Whisky (which was the fastest growing single malt globally in 2021 and 2023 according to IWSR); multi-award winning Single Malts Glen Scotia and Littlemill, Glen’s Vodka, (one of the largest retail spirits brands in the UK), Ben Lomond Gin and more recently Champagne Piaff – an award winning champagne with an exciting and contemporary positioning.

The New York Distilling Company produces a range of American Whiskey brands in multiple categories with its signature “Jaywalk Rye Whiskey” brand being the centre piece of the brand portfolio.  Jaywalk Rye has a number of different expressions, with all of them containing the coveted Horton Heirloom Rye brought to the new world from Europe in the 17th century.

Horton Rye was extensively used in the 17th and 18th centuries in the New York area for making Rye but had subsequently almost completely died out.  The team at The New York Distilling Company was initially gifted 10 seeds from the historic “seed bank” at Cornell University in 2015 and has now revived this historic Rye variety by successfully growing and cultivating this “heirloom rye” with their partner farmers in Seneca Falls, New York and subsequently distilling the successful harvests in New York to making some truly incredible whiskeys.

Those trying to find the much sought after Jaywalk Rye Whiskey are now able to taste the fantastic flavours of the past and “the original” Rye variety that has not been enjoyed for 150 years.

As well as the Jaywalk brand which includes Jaywalk straight Rye, bonded Rye and 100% heirloom expressions The New York Distilling Company is proud to include in its portfolio, Mister Katz Rock & Rye, Dorothy Parker Gin and Perry Tot’s Navy strength gin.

The New York Distilling Company is based in Brooklyn, New York which is a very dynamic neighbourhood known for its vibrant arts scene, diverse population, and mix of historical and modern architecture. It is a hub for creative individuals, featuring street art, converted industrial spaces, lively nightlife and is the perfect home for NYDC and Jaywalk Rye.

NYDC’s brands are inspired by the spirit and attitude of Brooklyn and New York – bold, self-confident, and unapologetically single minded. Rooted in tradition yet driven by purpose, the brand embodies a self-confident ethos, breaking conventional rules. Jaywalk Rye Whiskey has started a strong revival of the real heritage of traditional rye whiskey while pushing boundaries to create something distinctly modern with exceptional flavours. It is a brand that honours the past while always looking forward, embodying a restless energy that is as daring as the city that inspired it.  The Jaywalk brand has the self-confidence and attitude to tread its own path – ‘Born in Brooklyn, Made in New York’.

This acquisition fits perfectly with the existing Loch Lomond Group portfolio of premium spirits and expands the portfolio into a new important space for Loch Lomond Group – American Whiskey.

Colin Matthews, Founder and CEO of Loch Lomond Group, said:

“This acquisition represents another milestone in the continued growth of the Loch Lomond Group.  We look forward to working closely with the talented and ambitious team at NYDC to invest in both the facilities and products, while supercharging its growth both domestically in the US and around the world through the existing Loch Lomond Group distribution network as well as providing our help and expertise in the continued creation of fabulous flavours.”

Allen Katz and Tom Potter, Founders of the New York Distilling Company, said:

“We are excited to work with Colin and the Loch Lomond Group team to help us further grow our fantastic brands around the world. Loch Lomond Group has a strong track record of success, winning multiple major awards over many years for its whisky brands of Loch Lomond Whiskies, Glen Scotia, Littlemill and High Commissioner and with sales in over 120 countries around the world, we can’t wait to introduce NYDC’s brands to many of the key whiskey markets over the next period.”

This announcement follows a period of strong growth and innovation worldwide for the Loch Lomond Group’s brands and furthers its high-profile industry awards with five products shortlisted for Best in Class at the San Francisco Wines and Spirits Competition including two 99/100 scores for Glen Scotia 25 Year Old and Loch Lomond Whiskies Remarkable Stills Alchemy expression.

Both Loch Lomond Whiskies and Ben Lomond Gin are the Official “Spirits of The Open”, the world’s most prestigious golf championship.

Notes

Tomatin is located in the Scottish Highlands, 16 miles south of Inverness, and is famous for its portfolio of refined and elegant whiskies.  The distillery has a proud heritage stretching back to the 15th century when illicit production was likely to be taking place, but it wasn’t until 1897 that the first formal distillery was established by John MacDougall as the Tomatin Spey Distillery Company.

In 2022, Tomatin was awarded ‘Scotch Whisky Producer of the Year’ and ‘Outstanding Spirits Producer of the Year’ at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC). Later that year, it was recognised as ‘Sustainable Distillery of the Year’ at Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whisky 2023, in recognition of its continued contribution to sustainably at the distillery.

In 2023, Tomatin’s success continued when the distillery’s ‘Legacy’ was awarded Gold at IWSC. That same year, Tomatin also took home seven awards at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, while Cù Bòcan, took home three. Tomatin’s 36 Year Old was crowned the ultimate winner at SFWSC for malts, being named ‘Best in Show’, officially making it one of the best whiskies in the world.

Building upon this triumph, 2024 saw Tomatin’s 18 Year Old secured Double Gold for the third consecutive year at the SFWSC, elevating it to Platinum status. Meanwhile, both Tomatin’s 45 Year Old and 12 Year Old, alongside Cù Bòcan’s 15 Year Old took home Double Gold Awards, and Cù Bòcan’s 12 Year Old also secured a prestigious Gold Award.

At the 2024 IWSC Awards, Tomatin Legacy was awarded the IWSC Trophy for no age statement single malt Scotch, demonstrating its exceptional quality as best in class.

This year, Tomatin has been awarded Gold designation for its Tomatin Sherry Collection Ximénez Edition and Silver for both its Sherry Collection Manzanilla Edition and Sherry Collection Palo Cortado Edition in the inaugural 2025 Whiskey Wash Awards.

‘To What Matters’ is the latest chapter in the brand’s evolution; it is a positive call to arms that represents the spiritual DNA of Tomatin – a belief in savouring what is truly important in life and time spent together.

The Antiquary is one of Scotland’s oldest whisky brands.

In 1857 John & William Hardie established themselves as wine merchants in a small office and warehouse in Edinburgh. Being small and independent, they were free to experiment. The Victorian boom in Scotch got them curious about blended whisky and so began their quest to create a blend a cut above the rest using their skills as wine merchants to identify the very best whiskies to include in their blended Scotch whisky.

In 1888, using fine and rare malts, they created a blend considered superior to all others. Inspired by a Sir Walter Scott gothic novel – a book redolent with family secrets, stories of hidden treasure and hopeless love – they named it The Antiquary.

Changing ownership throughout the years The Antiquary was eventually purchased by Tomatin in 1996.

Tomatin is located in the Scottish Highlands, 16 miles south of Inverness, and is owned by Japanese company Takara Shuzo International.

It has a proud heritage stretching back to the 15th century when whisky production was likely to be taking place illicitly in the area. Today, it produces some of the finest single malts and blends including Tomatin, The Talisman, Big T, and Cù Bòcan.
