Misunderstood Whiskey Becomes First Domestic Brand to Join Sazerac’s Growing 375 Park Avenue Spirits Portfolio – American Whiskey News

MISUNDERSTOOD WHISKEY BECOMES FIRST DOMESTIC BRAND TO JOIN SAZERAC’S GROWING

375 PARK AVENUE SPIRITS PORTFOLIO

Louisville, KY (August 5, 2020)— 375 Park Avenue Spirits, a division of the Sazerac Company, is pleased to announce its national partnership with Misunderstood Whiskey as they expand distribution across the U.S. beginning October 1st, 2020. The partnership comes on the heels of Misunderstood Whiskey’s success in its hometown market and growing national demand for its Ginger Spiced Whiskey. Under this agreement, 375 Park Avenue Spirits and Sazerac Company’s Bond and Royal craft division will assume responsibility for all sales, distribution, and will support the brand’s marketing efforts. This partnership marks the next phase of growth for Misunderstood Whiskey and adds another innovative brand to 375 Park Avenue Spirits as they strategically scale their portfolio of premium spirits.

“Misunderstood is a brand that’s in the early stages of its life cycle and that youthful exuberance permeates from the brand and is central to what creates such a loyal base of consumer evangelists. The success that Chris and JD have been able to achieve in that brief window is a testament to the strength of the brand and the stewardship they’ve provided,” said Jason Schladenhauffen, president and CEO of 375 Park Avenue Spirits.  “The meteoric rise of the category is well documented and we feel strongly that this brand is ripe to become one of the next rising stars.”

Misunderstood Whiskey started as a kitchen recipe by childhood friends, JD Recobs and Chris Buglisi. The duo quickly realized how unique their product was as it drew growing attention from a widely diverse audience, many of whom were newly converted whiskey drinkers after trying their Ginger Spiced Whiskey. Misunderstood is an American whiskey blended with all natural ginger for a mellow finish while maintaining the integrity of the whiskey. In addition to being enjoyed neat or on the rocks, Misunderstood Whiskey’s early success can be attributed to its versatility in premium cocktails and regard as a fun tool for bartenders.

“We’re extremely humbled to join Sazerac’s 375 Park Avenue Spirits Portfolio,” said JD Recobs, Co-Founder of Misunderstood Whiskey. “We couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to work with and are confident that 375 Park Avenue Spirits and Bond & Royal will play a major role in the continued success of Misunderstood. We’re thrilled to take our brand to the next level and share Misunderstood with the rest of the Nation. It’s going to be a lot of fun!”

“We’re excited to have partners who understand and align with our company’s vision to create the whiskey for everyone,” added Chris Buglisi, Co-Founder of Misunderstood Whiskey.  “With 375 Park Avenue Spirits and Sazerac’s infrastructure behind Misunderstood, we can focus on product innovation, brand strategy, and connecting more with our amazing customers who are the backbone of the brand.”

About 375 Park Avenue Spirits:

Craft Whisky Club Launches Caskshare – Scotch Whisky News

Caskshare allows whisky lovers to reserve ‘shares’ of whisky casks from their favourite distilleries, choosing between a wide variety of wood types and ages as the whisky matures. Single cask bottles will then be sent directly to buyers upon maturation, or even traded between them on this new leading-edge technology platform. Described as ‘crowdfunding for whisky’, the aim of Caskshare is to allow whisky-lovers the chance to experience different cask variations by lowering the financial barrier to cask-ownership.

New casks

The new casks range from a 31 year-old cask, from Cambus which is now no longer even a distillery to the deep red of the Glen Moray, a 1st fill red wine barrique. LOCH LOMOND WHISKIES REVEALS COMPLETE BRAND REFRESH – Scotch Whisky News

LOCH LOMOND WHISKIES REVEALS COMPLETE BRAND REFRESH

Loch Lomond Whiskies has unveiled a complete brand refresh which includes redesigned packaging across its domestic and Global Travel Retail single malt Scotch whisky ranges.

The investment comes after strong business growth over the past five years which has seen Loch Lomond Whiskies become one of the top five fastest growing single malt brands in the world, listed in over 125 markets.

The new look packaging introduces a more contemporary aesthetic alongside simple flavour descriptors allowing consumers to easily navigate their way through the portfolio.

The restructured portfolio brings the Inchmurrin 12 year old and Inchmoan 12 year old under the Loch Lomond Whiskies brand, forming the heart of the range alongside Loch Lomond 12 year old.

These three expressions demonstrate the capability of Loch Lomond’s innovative distillation and long fermentation, which can deliver a range of flavour profiles, from the light and fruity Inchmurrin to the heavily peated Inchmoan, with Loch Lomond 12 year old in between.  Loch Lomond Original, Loch Lomond Classic, Loch Lomond 10 year old and Loch Lomond 18 year old complete the domestic portfolio.

A further three aged Loch Lomond single malts are due for release later in 2020, building the appeal of the range.

John Grieveson, Chief Marketing Officer, commented: “We recognise that in a growing and increasingly fragmented market the continued success of the Loch Lomond Whiskies portfolio depends on our ability to clearly communicate what makes our whiskies so unique. The breadth of flavour characteristics available across the range is unrivalled across the industry. Our investment in this brand refresh allows us to better communicate this range of flavour profiles to consumers, as well as improving stand out of the Loch Lomond Whiskies brand, and celebrating our much-loved location close to the banks of Loch Lomond.”

The new look packaging retains the familiar stag icon and features a more prominent Loch Lomond brand name and age statement to increase visibility on shelf. The outline of the famous Loch Lomond has been incorporated into the background of each gift box, celebrating the distillery’s enviable location. A simple flavour descriptor also features on both the gift box and bottle.

The design will also be rolled out across the Loch Lomond Whiskies Global Travel Retail range, better aligning the two collections, and improving brand recognition.

In 2018, Loch Lomond Whiskies entered a prestigious, five-year partnership with The Open, golf’s original championship. The partnership with The R&A includes support of the AIG Women’s British Open and showcases the full range of Loch Lomond Whiskies on a global scale.  In February 2020, Loch Lomond Whiskies concluded a new agreement with the Professional Golfers’ Association (The PGA) to become a ‘PGA Partner’ and the title sponsor of the Scottish PGA Championship. More recently Loch Lomond Whiskies, have confirmed their commitment to golf as new sponsor of the European Tour’s newly launched ‘UK Swing’ in July and August.

Founded in 1814, the Loch Lomond distillery can trace its roots back to the Littlemill distillery, which was established in 1772 and is the oldest licensed distillery in the world. Its current malt and grain distilleries, in Alexandria, Dunbartonshire, close to the banks of Loch Lomond, were commissioned in 1964 with first distillation in 1966.

When it opened, Loch Lomond distillery’s ground-breaking straight necked stills were a revelation, enabling production of a lighter, fruitier spirit and greater control over the whisky’s character. Under the later ownership of the Bulloch family further distilling innovation took place with the aim of being self-sufficient. It is among only four distilleries in the Scotch whisky industry to maintain an onsite cooperage which makes and maintains 20,000 casks annually.

JAMESON IRISH WHISKEY CONNECTS WITH INTERNATIONAL RAP STAR BAS TO SUPPORT EMERGING ARTISTS – Irish Whiskey News

JAMESON IRISH WHISKEY CONNECTS WITH INTERNATIONAL RAP STAR BAS TO SUPPORT EMERGING ARTISTS

Jameson, the world’s bestselling Irish whiskey[1], is rekindling its collaboration with international rap artist Bas to mentor two emerging artists to create new tracks virtually during COVID-19.

Jameson Irish Whiskey has connected the Dreamville rapper with two young musicians from Ireland and the U.S as part of its new campaign – Jameson Connects: The Stay Inn. Together, Jameson and Bas offered the artists a unique mentorship opportunity to help take their careers to the next level.

The #JamesonConnectsBas project was launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This spring, Bas had planned to run a series of youth music workshops in Sudan, the country of his heritage, as a way of using his experience and expertise to inspire the next generation of musical talent and to give back to the community and culture that he loves.  Unfortunately, the workshops were postponed because of the COVID-19 crisis. Instead, Bas began working with Jameson to see how he could connect with people through this period and the concept of a digital mentorship programme was born.

Bas handpicked the artists, each with a very different sound and background, based purely on their creativity, potential and originality. In recent weeks he connected with Say 3, a US-based music producer and a regular fixture on the Atlanta club scene and Sierra Leonean-Irish art-soul artist, Loah. Through a series of online workshops, the artists worked in collaboration with Bas to produce a new track.

Commenting on the project, Bas, who is famously the protégé of J Cole, explains: “Throughout my career I have been lucky enough to find myself with amazing mentors, and this is something I have always been truly thankful for. I never underestimate the impact that this has had on my journey as an artist, and I believe it is essential to open up your experiences and share your successes with other aspiring artists so that they can learn from them, and are given the same opportunities.”

Brendan Buckley, International Marketing Director at Irish Distillers, adds: “As the global leader in Irish whiskey, Jameson prides itself on bringing people and communities together. Jameson Connects: The Stay Inn is an extension of this, celebrating the diversity and talents of our whiskey fans. We are delighted to be partnering with Bas once again and look forward to following the musical journey of each of the artists.”

The project forms the next phase of the Jameson Connects: The Stay Inn platform, designed to keep spirits high as the world stays in by bringing drinks recipes, pub quizzes, merchandise giveaways and virtual gigs to Jameson fans around the world.

Fans can tune into videos from the creative process on Jameson Whiskey’s YouTube channel

St. Kilian Signature Edition FOUR Tops 2020 London Spirits Competition – Whisky News

2020 London Spirits Competition Winners Are Out!

On July 7-8, London was the host city for the third annual London Spirits Competition, leading international competition of its kind in the world that assesses spirits not only on the basis of taste and quality, but also packaging and value. The goal was for experts to judge spirits the way consumers actually judge them, in the hopes of discovering new and innovative spirits that are worthy of attention by both trade buyers and consumers.

Spirits were judged on the basis of three primary criteria – quality, value, and packaging – and then scored on a 100-point scale. Spirits that scored 90+ points were awarded Gold medals, while spirits that scored 76 to 89 points were awarded Silver medals. The primary reason for using three criteria rather than just one was to focus on the overall drinkability of each spirit.

Spirit Of The Year – St. Kilian Signature Edition FOUR by St. Kilian Distillers GmbH scoring 97 points making it the top score in the 2020 London Spirits Competition

The London Spirits Competition is organized by Beverage Trade Network, which organizes alcohol beverage industry events all over the world. The goal of this event was to judge spirits the way consumers judge them.

At the judging session, judges tasted and scored spirits on a blind basis before seeing bottles and marking them for on-shelf appeal as well as value for money. This enabled them to come up with an overall score that reflects their overall drinkability.

Elijah Craig Launches Toasted Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey – American Whiskey News

Elijah Craig Launches Toasted Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

New expression finished in custom toasted new oak barrels continues Elijah Craig’s spirit of innovation

The process begins with fully matured Small Batch, which is dumped and then re-entered at barrel proof into a second, custom toasted new oak barrel designed in partnership with Independent Stave Company. Made with 18-month air dried oak, the finishing barrel is first toasted and then flash-charred using a moderate toast temperature and toast time. An extensive research and development process resulted in a final barrel toast profile bringing forward dark sugar flavors within the wood to create a balance of smokiness and sweetness after months of finishing. The resulting taste is big, rich and complex with spice and pepper notes that fade into milk chocolate with a hint of smoke as the finish lingers with chocolate and baking spices. Only charred new American oak barrels are used throughout the process to maintain the standards of identity class and type designation for Straight Bourbon Whiskey.BARDSTOWN, Ky. – Elijah Craig, a leading premium Kentucky Bourbon, today announced the launch of Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. The latest line extension from the award-winning Elijah Craig family, Toasted Barrel adds an extra layer of sweet oak complexity to the traditional Bourbon.

“Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel pays homage to our namesake’s pioneering spirit as the first to char oak barrels through thoughtful innovation in the barrel-aging process,” said Max Stefka, Elijah Craig Senior Brand Manager. “It was a pleasure partnering with Independent Stave Company to create a custom toast profile and char level designed to best complement fully matured Elijah Craig. Twice barreled for nuanced flavor, Toasted Barrel showcases a Straight Bourbon process unique in the marketplace.”

In 1789, Elijah Craig was the first to char oak Barrels to make Bourbon, earning his place in history as the “Father of Bourbon.” Toasted Barrel celebrates this pioneering spirit by pushing the Bourbon barrel-aging process a step further. Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel is bottled at 94 proof, consistent with Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon and Elijah Craig Straight Rye Whiskey, and joins the rest of the award-winning lineup of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and Elijah Craig Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

Packaged in the iconic Elijah Craig bottle, Toasted Barrel is distinguished by new bottle decoration, face, side and neck labels with smoky blue features. With an SRP of $49.99, Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel will launch nationally on an allocated basis this September.

About Elijah Craig Bourbon

Elijah Craig Bourbon bears the name of the Reverend Elijah Craig, known as “The Father of Bourbon,” who established his distillery in 1789 on the banks of Elkhorn Creek in modern day Georgetown, Kentucky. He is credited with being the first distiller to age his wares in charred oak barrels. The clear, unaged corn liquor became transformed into a bold amber liquid with a distinctively smooth flavor that makes Bourbon what it is today. Produced by Heaven Hill Distillery, the family of whiskeys includes Elijah Craig Small Batch, Elijah Craig Straight Rye Whiskey, Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, and Elijah Craig Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

First brought to market in 1986, Heaven Hill Distillery’s Master Distillers were selecting a small number of barrels of the finest Bourbon to make Elijah Craig Small Batch long before the term “small batch” even existed. It is this attention to detail and superb craftsmanship that give Elijah Craig an ideal balance of age, robust body and rich flavor. Elijah Craig accolades have included Whisky Advocate’s Whisky of the Year, Best Small Batch Bourbon and Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and Excellent Highly Recommended honors at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge. The resurgent Irish whiskey industry has a new feather in its cap with the announcement that the island’s most remote county is once again distilling whiskey.  In the far northwest, in the shadow of the imposing mountain of Sliabh Liag, a double distilled smoky spirit made from Irish peated malt has been filled into a first fill bourbon oak cask by Sliabh Liag Distillers (SLD).  It is the first time since the closure of Burt Distillery in 1841 that legal whiskey distillation has taken place in Donegal.

The small-batch production at its Carrick facility will help the company’s founders and distillers, James and Moira Doherty, undertake valuable research and development while the business’s new whiskey distillery at Ardara is under construction.  The timing also marks an important period in Sliabh Liag Distillery’s history as it prepares for a crowd-funding launch on Wednesday 26th August to help raise €1.5m of capital for the new distillery.

Commenting on the landmark occasion, James Doherty, SLD Founder, said: “We’ve done it!  It’s only now that the first cask is filled, ready to mature into a smoky single malt Irish whiskey that we feel we have really returned to Donegal.  When Moira and I moved back here in 2014, it was with the dream of reigniting the county’s distilling heritage, and with the Crolly and Baoilleach distilleries, the county is getting there. Our new spirit smells lovely and drinks even better; it is soft and smoky sweet with a fresh pear note and a hint of treacle.”

“While the success of our An Dúlamán gin and Silkie and Dark Silkie blended Irish whiskeys has been rewarding”, James says, “the distilling genes in me knew this scatterling’s return wouldn’t be complete without an Irish malt flowing from the stills. While Burt Distillery ceased production in 1841, we know illegal distilling continued during the intermittent years, not least by my grandfather who was creating a smoky, double distilled spirit under the authorities’ radar on the hills ‘up the glen’ in Kilcar. I think my grandfather would approve that we are now distilling the first legal whiskey in Donegal for nearly 200 years, and there’s a lovely sense of coming full circle.”

“There has been a fair amount of blood, sweat and tears to get to this point – especially last week in hand-mashing 500L of wort for brewing – but it’s given us a huge lift as we embark on the next stage in both our and Donegal’s history.  Turf has been turned at the site of the Ardara Distillery and we launch our fundraising exercise on Crowdcube in a few weeks’ time.  Once we are up and running there, the future of Donegal Irish Whiskey will be even brighter.”  James added.

The new make spirit is exceptionally soft and is fresh, citrusy and has rich chocolate notes to complement the pronounced smoke. It has been made from Irish Craft Malts barley grown in Meath and some malted over peat from Mín na bhFachraín.  The smoky profile of the spirit is true to what was being distilled in Ulster 200 years ago, and like the county itself, a contrast to the rest of Ireland in character.

It was distilled twice in SLD’s copper pot still, known as Méabh.  This first run of spirit has been filled into a first fill bourbon oak cask.  The creation of the spirit was delayed from earlier this year when Sliabh Liag Distillers turned its focus to creating hand sanitizer for the local community during the early stages of the pandemic.

When this very first whiskey is ready for bottling, it will give some indication of what James, Moira and the ‘meitheal’ (work-gang) around them aim to produce at Ardara Distillery.  The hope is to make Donegal to Ireland what Islay is to Scotland.
