THE OXFORD ARTISAN DISTILLERY LAUNCHES ITS SECOND BATCH OF RYE WHISKY – English Whisky News

THE OXFORD ARTISAN DISTILLERY LAUNCHES ITS SECOND BATCH OF RYE WHISKY

Oxford, 12th July 2021 – The Oxford Artisan Distillery, the UK’s first certified Organic Grain-to-Glass distillery*, has announced the launch of its second release of Oxford Rye Whisky.

The distillery produces superior English rye whisky using ancient heritage grains**, grown by the distillery’s certified organic and regenerative farming partners. These grains require no pesticides, fungicides or herbicides, supporting sustainability and biodiversity in their fields.

The first batch of The Oxford Artisan Distillery’s inaugural rye whisky, Batch #1, released at the end of April, sold out on the day of its launch and received outstanding acclaim.

Oxford Rye Whisky Batch #2, bottled at 47.4% ABV, has the distillery’s classic Oxford Rye house-style: herbal and floral with creamy butterscotch notes, nutty and spicy banana bread, but with an elevated sweet wine flavour of berry jams, dried fruits, leather and tobacco.

The whisky in this batch was matured in virgin American oak casks and freshly emptied Vintage Port casks. Having spent many years in production the Port casks bring the very best characteristics of Portugal’s famed Douro wine valley to the Thames valley, and the character of Oxford’s only Rye Whisky.

Master Distiller, Chico Rosa comments: “The goal with this whisky was to bring you to Oxford; which for me is rye fields and old libraries. It’s herbal, nutty and cured. Like our diverse fields of grain, this is a diverse experience of sensations.”

Adding: ”The first release was our pure expression of rye – virgin oak, fruity, with a herbal and bready character. With this batch, I wanted to highlight a different side of our rye – the herbal nuttiness and rye goodness, while also bringing a decadent and musky hint of Vintage Port. Showing their years the Port casks add a layer of complexity, without overtaking, only complementing.”

The Oxford Artisan Distillery is the only distillery in England to use populations of ancient heritage grains; painstakingly sourced, revived and bulked up over many years and grown sustainably using methods last used back in the 19th century. As a result Oxford Rye Whisky has a flavour that cannot be achieved from commercial grain.

To create this expression, the grain ratio was made up of 90% maslin (a mix of 70% rye and 20% wheat from populations grown together in the same field) and 10% heritage malted barley – which was harvested in the summer of 2017. The grain was not milled, but instead flattened in a very loud, eccentric traditional mill from the 1920s. The resulting course flakes were then made up in to an 8,000L watery porridge.

Spring fermentation – which has delivered richer fruit characters compared with Batch #1’s winter fermentation – was undertaken in 5000L Hungarian oak vats. The porous oak helps the distillery to have a consistent and stable in-house fermenting culture, allowing microflora to give fruitier flavours and creamier notes. The mash was then double distilled in the distillery’s bespoke custom-made stills, named Nautilus and Nemo, where the grains get baked into smoky sourdough notes. Then finally, the new make spirit was matured in virgin American oak casks and freshly emptied Vintage Port casks.

Oxford Rye Whisky Batch #2 consists of 973 bottles, priced at £95, and will be available from specialist retailers including Master of Malt, Harvey Nichols, The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop, Oxford Wine and the distillery’s website from 13th July.

Following this second release, the third batch of Oxford Rye Whisky will be released on 31st July to celebrate the distillery’s fourth anniversary. This is a truly seasonal edition matured in Moscatel de Setúbal and distilled with grain from the 2017 Harvest. More information will follow.

The Oxford Artisan Distillery:

The distillery opened for business at its purpose-built site in Oxford on 27th July 2017.

It is Oxford’s first ever distillery and produces a range of spirits, including gin, absinthe, vodka and whisky, all with total provenance from grain to glass. The Oxford Artisan Distillery is rare amongst UK distilleries in producing its own organic spirit, rather than purchasing Grain Neutral Spirit (GNS) from other sources.

The distillery has a licence to produce spirits for the University of Oxford and has a notable partnership with the University of Oxford’s Botanic Garden.

*UK’s first certified Organic Grain-to-Glass distillery

According to the latest figures released by WSTA in 2020, the number of the distilleries registered in the UK grew to 560 from over 414 in 2019. Out of these The Oxford Artisan Distillery is the only distillery cultivating, distilling, and bottling its own organic heritage grains.

**About Organic Heritage Grain:

Certified Organic in April 2020, The Oxford Artisan Distillery is the only distiller to use genetically diverse populations of ancient heritage organic grains – revived from historical sources by a leading archaeo-botanist and grown sustainably on over 350 acres, known as land races, both close to Oxford and on prestigious estates such as Highgrove and Sandringham. The distillery’s grain contributes to biodiversity and soil health in the English countryside. The grains are the result of John Lett’s lifelong research on ancient grains: John has spent a large part of his life sourcing and growing ancient grains together, as polycultures. John takes 30-100 varieties of grain, mixes them up, and grows them together in the same field, at the same time. These sustainable fields are similar to what you would have seen in medieval times – the grains are grown specifically for the distillery, making The Oxford Artisan Distillery the only distillery in the world with a license to use John’s grains, grown exclusively for flavour and not yield.

The Rise of Online Auctions: A New Consumers Guide To Selling At Auction – Whisky News

The Rise of Online Auctions: A New Consumers Guide To Selling At Auction

The popularity of online whisky auctions has been increasing over recent years, with over 175,000 bottles of whisky sold in 2020 through specialist whisky auctions alone. This represents a 775% growth in the volume of sales in just 10 years (source: WhiskyStats).

The significant growth in the sector has brought about the creation of many new businesses, and there are now over 20 specialist online whisky auctions in the UK alone.

But how does a consumer understand which auction is best suited to their bottles? Are all auctions created equal, or are there more important factors to consider when choosing to sell your bottles at auction?

In doing research regarding online whisky auction houses, you will come across many auction houses that all claim to be the best, with the best marketing, the lowest seller’s commission, and the best value service. However, there is no source that whisky sellers can consult in order to decide which whisky auction house is the best fit for them.

With this in mind Cheshire-based whisky brokers Mark Littler LTD have published an in depth guide to all of the main specialist whisky auctions in an effort to help sellers interrogate these claims, and ensure that they get the best prices for their bottles.

Whilst previous resources have simply compared the seller’s commissions of each auction house, this does not necessarily mean that the auction house with the lowest commission will afford sellers the highest return. Other factors such as international shipping options, storage options post-sale, size of audience, quality of pre-sale marketing and blogs, turnover, and volume of bottles all play a role.

Mark Littler Ltd contacted all of the main whisky auction houses in the UK, gathering information for use in their in-depth guide. Information on each house such as seller’s commission, turnover in 2020, number of bottles sold in 2020, storage options, and shipping options are included in the guide. The guide also goes into further detail regarding what makes each whisky auction house stand out from the rest.

Director of Mark Littler Ltd, Mark Littler, said “having worked with many avid whisky collectors and investors, we know that choosing an avenue through which to sell your bottles can be tricky; when you have spent years building a collection, you want to know that you are entrusting those bottles to the best auction house possible. We hope that this guide will help whisky-owners to decide which house is best for them, both in terms of selling their whisky and in terms of customer experience”.

Mark Littler LTD have been helping their clients to sell their whisky for over 5 years and have over 400 five-star reviews of their service across Google, Yell and Facebook. They provide free valuations of bottles, advise clients on the best route to sell (either through auction, private sale, or their brokerage shop). They hit the headlines in 2020 when they sold a vertical of Macallan 18 Year Old for Matthew Robson, and the story broke across the world.

To read this in-depth guide on how to sell your whisky at auction visit the Mark Littler website.

The Mark Littler website also has a wealth of information about everything from investing in whisky, to selling your antiques. For all things whisky, watches, jewellery, silver, and more, head over to marklittler.com.

VIRTUAL GREAT BUFFALO CHASE 5K HOSTED PARTICIPANTS FROM ALL 50 STATES – American Whiskey News

VIRTUAL GREAT BUFFALO CHASE 5K

HOSTED PARTICIPANTS FROM ALL 50 STATES

More than $21,000 raised for local VFW, $15,000 donated to local food pantry

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (July 8, 2021) – Runners from all 50 states and five countries participated in Buffalo Trace Distillery’s 20th annual Great Buffalo Chase 5k which was held virtually over July 4th weekend. This was the second time this race, which has historically attracted top runners from across the United States and the world, received runner participation in all of the 50 United States. In total, 1,131 people participated in the virtual race. Registrations for the race raised more than $21,000 for the city of Frankfort’s VFW Post 4075’s annual fireworks show on July 4th weekend.

The race kicked off the morning of July 2nd with the singing of the National Anthem, performed by Navji Dixon, a public relations coordinator for the Distillery and performing artist in the central Kentucky region. Then, runners and walkers participated in this year’s virtual race in their hometowns and local neighborhoods wherever they were located during the period of July 2-5 instead of running at the Distillery as in the past. Participants were mailed a commemorative T-shirt and race bib and had the option to record and submit their personal race time.

Due to the nature of this being a virtual race, and in the spirit of fairness, prizes were not awarded to top runners this year. On behalf of all participants, and in commitment to supporting others, this Fourth of July Buffalo Trace Distillery donated $15,000 to God’s Pantry Food Bank to support the local Franklin County community. Additionally, everyone who registered was entered into a raffle to win a prize from the Gift Shop and winners were notified via email.

Participants also were encouraged to take part in the virtual patriotic attire costume contest on the Virtual Great Buffalo Chase 5K Facebook Event through the Buffalo Trace Distillery Facebook Page and by using #ChaseTheBuffalo for the chance to win a prize from the Gift Shop. Participants also had the opportunity to post pictures of their pets in Buffalo Trace or patriotic attire for a special pet costume contest new to this year’s race.

A full listing of submitted race times can be found on the Buffalo Trace Distillery website, here.

This edition, which features Scotch Whisky & World Whisky expressions, marks the end of a long journey and a realization of a dream for the company’s President and Vice President.

About the selection process, Sam Filmus, President of ImpEx Beverages, said, “Finding the symphony of nose, palate, and finish is key. Chris Uhde, Vice President of ImpEx Beverages, added, “There is a lot of great whisky out there and choosing a cask for The ImpEx Collection is always a very carefully thought-out process. When selecting a cask, I ask myself three questions:

  1. “Is it delicious?”
  2. “Would I be proud to share and enjoy this whisky with friends?”
  3. “Does the cask fit in a complementary way with the other casks being offered in the release?”

Only if the answer to all three is “Yes!” then I have found a cask worth including in The ImpEx Collection.”

In addition to Single Casks, The ImpEx Collection includes vattings of multiple casks,. Production size is always small, because spirits this special are always rare. Once they’re consumed, they live on only in memory.

The ImpEx Collection is inclusive and inviting, welcoming people to branch out beyond what they’re familiar with and try something new. These bottles are meant to be shared, whether for special occasions or simply among friends.

Currach Single Malt Irish Whiskey – Atlantic Wakame Seaweed Cask – Irish Whiskey News

Origin Spirits Ireland Ltd, a pioneer in avant-garde single malt spirits, is proud to announce the launch of its latest commercial release whiskey, Currach Single Malt Irish Whiskey – Atlantic Wakame Seaweed Cask.

Bio:
Currach Single Malt Irish Whiskey is a true innovation in the world of whiskey and the first to be finished in seaweed charred casks. Currach’s first expression was made with Irish Atlantic Kombu Kelp seaweed, a brown seaweed varietal, launched in March 2020 and is now sold in over 20 international markets worldwide.

After the success of its initial Atlantic Kombu release, Origin Spirits is delighted to release its second whiskey expression. Currach Single Malt Irish Whiskey – Atlantic Wakame Seaweed Cask.

The same process is used to create both expressions, the only variance being the seaweed used to char the individual casks. The flavours from both products are starkly different, yet share the same single malt DNA while having distinctive sweet, savoury and maritime qualities of their own. This shows the incredible diversity of Ireland’s maritime terroir, and how this influences our single malt whiskey.

Currach Wakame Cask is an intriguing whiskey – complex yet subtle, vegetal yet sweet, light yet deep.

Made from 100% Irish malted barley, it is a triple distilled single malt Irish whiskey, initially matured in 1st fill American oak ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in Atlantic Wakame seaweed charred virgin American oak casks. It is non-chill filtered, with no caramel colouring, and is bottled at 46% alc./vol. The initial batch is limited to only 3000 bottles.

Wakame Seaweed:
Sustainably hand-harvested off the wild Atlantic coast of Co. Clare, Wakame seaweed is 100 % naturally grown and organically certified. Wakame, a green seaweed varietal, is both rare and seasonal, and considered to be the king of seaweeds.

Wakame seaweed grows in the extreme lower shore on wave-battered rocks and in rock pools along the coast of Ireland. It grows in the winter months and is harvested in mid-spring/early summer when it is at its nutritional prime. Wakame is known for its’ low light limitations and therefore does not grow in the mid-summer months.

Wakame has a subtle, but distinctive taste and texture. It has a briny, salty, and umami flavour with a degree of sweetness. It is traditionally used in salads, soups, snacks, and as a seasoning, particularly in Japanese and other Asian cuisines.

Seaweed Harvesting:
Seaweed harvesting employs about 400 people in Ireland, mostly on a part-time basis, as it is very weather and tide dependent. Fourth Generation Seaweed Harvesters, The Talty Family, ensures only the finest seaweeds are selected for Currach Single Malt Whiskey. All their seaweeds grow naturally off the Wild Atlantic Way in Co. Clare. Hand-harvested in season to provide optimum nutrition, their seaweeds are organically certified. The precious harvesting waters are also tested quarterly to ensure they are of the highest quality.

Quote:
Patrick Shelley, Founder of Origin Spirits Ireland Ltd. said;

“Our vision with Currach was to create a single malt Irish whiskey inspired by the various elements of the Irish terroir. We are fortunate to have some of the best malted barley in the world and our coast yields an abundance of organic and sustainable seaweed. The union of these elements together in a whiskey is a world’s first.

We were very encouraged by the success of our initial Kombu release which is now available in 20 countries, and wanted to let our consumers further discover the diversity of Ireland’s maritime terroir with our Atlantic Wakame Cask”

“Currach Atlantic Wakame Cask is a whiskey of sensory paradoxes. At its heart, it is a smooth Irish single malt but with the subtle briny and maritime characteristics often found in Scotch, thus giving it a uniquely rich, multi-layered and complex character”
