THE HOUSE OF SUNTORY WHISKY PROUDLY INTRODUCES YAMAZAKI® 55 YEARS OLD™ – Japanese Whisky News

THE HOUSE OF SUNTORY WHISKY PROUDLY INTRODUCES

YAMAZAKI® 55 YEARS OLD

From the birthplace of Japanese Whisky, Yamazaki® 55 – now available in select global markets – honors the legacy of three generations of Master Blenders and celebrates its harmony with nature with a donation for every newly released bottle to The White Oak Initiative.

LONDON, UK (September, 2021) – In the much anticipated first-ever global release of the Yamazaki® 55, the House of Suntory pays tribute to the passage of time and the legacy of the founding family of Japanese whisky. Bottled in 2020, Yamazaki 55 – the House of Suntory’s oldest release in its history – celebrates the Japanese “Showa” era of the 1960s that represented a major period of change for the House of Suntory.

Extremely limited quantities of Yamazaki 55, of which 100 bottles were initially released in Japan in 2020, will reach select global markets including the United Kingdom, United States, Mainland China and Taiwan later this month. Yamazaki 55 will be available to purchase in Harrods, Claridge’s and The Arts Club.

To honor its ongoing commitment to give back to society, Beam Suntory, will donate $5,000 USD for every bottle released in this year’s 100-bottle collection, totaling $500,000 USD, to The White Oak Initiative, a group committed to the long-term sustainability of America’s white oak forests.

Yamazaki 55 is a blend of precious single malts featuring components distilled in 1960 under the supervision of Suntory’s founder Shinjiro Torii and then aged in Mizunara casks; and in 1964 under Suntory’s Second Master Blender Keizo Saji and then aged in White Oak casks. Suntory’s Fifth-Generation Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo worked closely with Third-Generation Master Blender Shingo Torii in deploying their signature art of blending to properly reveal the exceptional depth, complexity and wisdom that is Yamazaki 55. The resulting expression features a deep amber color; robust aroma redolent of sandal wood and well-ripened fruit; sweet, slightly bitter and woody palate; and slightly bitter yet sweet and rich finish.

“Throughout the process of blending Yamazaki 55, I used as inspiration the passage of time and ‘Wabi-sabi’ – the Japanese belief that imperfections can help to ultimately contribute to perfection,” said Fukuyo. “While I often view other extra aged whiskies as art, I consider Yamazaki 55 to be more like a Buddhist statue: calm and mysterious, requiring time to truly enjoy the inner beauty.”

Yamazaki 55 is presented in a crystal bottle with the word “Yamazaki” carefully engraved in calligraphy using the technique of sandblasting and featuring real gold dust and lacquer on the age marking. The bottle’s opening is wrapped in handmade Echizen washi paper and bound with a Kyo-kumihimo plaited cord, a traditional craft from Kyoto. Each bottle is delivered in a bespoke box made from native Japanese Mizunara wood and coated with Suruga lacquer.

Tasting Notes – Yamazaki 55, 46% ABV

Color:  Deep amber distinctive of Mizunara casks.

Nose:   A robust aroma redolent of sandal wood. A sweet, mature bouquet like well-ripened fruit.

Palate: A soft, smooth first sip that blossoms in the mouth with flavor. A mixture of sweet and slightly bitter, followed by a woody note from the Mizunara cask.

Finish: Slightly bitter, a fragrance like scented wood and a hint of smokiness. A sweet, rich, lingering finish.

Yamazaki 55 will be available in extremely limited quantities starting this month at a suggested retail price of $60,000 USD excluding VAT and duties. Yamazaki 55 will be available to purchase in Harrods, Harvey Nichols, The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop, Master of Malt.

Yamazaki 55 will also be available in The Arts Club, Annabel’s and Claridge’s. This limited-edition expression joins Yamazaki’s portfolio of award-winning whiskies including Yamazaki® 12, Yamazaki 18® and Yamazaki 25®.

From Yamazaki. Birthplace of Japanese whisky.

The Yamazaki Distillery is Japan’s first and oldest malt whisky distillery, built starting in 1923 by Suntory’s founder Shinjiro Torii. Yamazaki is not only the soul place of Suntory Whisky. It is the birthplace of Japanese Whisky.

Inspired by traditional Scottish whisky, it is said that Torii selected the land of Yamazaki at the foot of Mt. Tennozan, for its high-quality water source and natural environment, both of which are ideal for whisky making. Nestled proudly on the periphery of Kyoto, the area around Yamazaki Distillery has been long referred to as “Minaseno” famous for its exquisite natural water, even mentioned in the Man’yoshu, the ancient anthology of Japanese poetry. Home to Sen no Rikyu, Master of “The Way of Tea” and his renowned “Rikyu no Mizu” (water of the imperial villa), the waters of Yamazaki are selected by the Ministry of Environment as one of Japan’s one hundred best natural mineral waters.

Yamazaki lies in a misty valley between Mt.Tennozan and Mt. Otokoyama, where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers converge. Blessed with Japan’s rich four seasons, the diversity of this region’s temperature and humidity align to create the perfect conditions for the making of whisky.

Shinjiro Torii built Japan’s first malt whisky distillery in Yamazaki, and the Suntory legacy continued with Torii’s son, Keizo Saji, Suntory’s second master blender who continued to establish distilleries including the Hakushu distillery. As the generations of Suntory’s master blenders carry on, Suntory Whisky remains committed to heritage and innovation. Glenmorangie’s new home for imagination – Scotch Whisky News

Glenmorangie’s new home for imagination

— Ground-breaking innovation distillery opens door to game-changing, spirit-led whiskies

Today, Glenmorangie single malt Scotch whisky opens the doors to its ground-breaking innovation distillery – a place which promises to bring a kaleidoscope of delicious new flavours to whisky. Here, at the heart of the Highland Distillery, whisky makers will redefine every aspect of their craft to create game-changing, spirit-led Glenmorangies.

Glenmorangie has been pushing single malt boundaries for decades. From pioneering wood finishing to Glenmorangie Signet unparalleled mocha flavours, and the ground-breaking Private Edition series, Director of Whisky Creation Dr Bill Lumsden is endlessly experimental in his quest to dream up delicious whiskies for more people to enjoy. His “What if…?” approach has inspired the Lighthouse, the first on-site innovation distillery dedicated to a single malt brand and created solely for experimentation. Conceived to bring Dr Bill’s most extraordinary ideas to life, it is a playground where he and his team can let their imaginations run wild.

The multi-million-pound Lighthouse is named for its landmark approach to whisky. Like an actual lighthouse, the 20m-high stillhouse can be seen for miles around. Offering unique flexibility with ingredients and processes, it is designed for deliciousness, rather than yield. Key areas of innovation include:

  • Stillhouse: Equipped with two of the giraffe-high stills which enable Glenmorangie’s delicate, fruity spirit. But the new stills feature a host of modifications which allow them to alter spirit character by acting as if they were shorter – or even taller.
  • Brewhouse: Constructed in the traditional style of the main Distillery, this stone building offers scope for myriad experiments with barley, water and yeast during mashing and brewing.
  • Sensory laboratory: Above the stillhouse, with coastal views, the laboratory offers Dr Bill’s team the rare chance to study raw spirit and play with their experiments as they evolve.

Dr Bill said: “Our Lighthouse is the new home of imagination. Here, we’ll indulge our most fantastical ideas as we strive to create a whole array of different flavours. We will play with raw ingredients and make small adjustments and big changes in ways never tried before. Nothing is off limits, as long as it’s delicious.”

Thomas Moradpour, President and CEO of The Glenmorangie Company, said: “Global demand for Glenmorangie is growing significantly. The first of its kind, our Lighthouse experimental distillery is the keystone of our plans to stay at the forefront of taste innovation. By giving our talented creation team free rein, we will welcome even more consumers worldwide to enjoy delicious whiskies.”

To mark the Lighthouse opening, Glenmorangie is releasing a mouth-wateringly soft and fruity whisky, limited to 3,000 bottles. Glenmorangie Lighthouse is created with bourbon and sherry casks now encased in the Lighthouse’s walls. Aged 12 years and available only at the Distillery, its spectrum of flavours is a sign of all the wondrous whiskies yet to come, RRP: £85.

About Glenmorangie:

Glenmorangie’s whisky makers use endless imagination and five key ingredients – wood, water, barley, yeast and time – to dream up delicious single malt whiskies. They’ve been honing their craft for more than 175 years. They create a delicate and fruity spirit in stills as tall as an adult giraffe to allow for more taste and aroma. Led by Director of Whisky Creation Dr Bill Lumsden, this crackerjack crew are on a mission to bring new flavours and possibilities to the world of single malt.

Glenmorangie celebrates the joy of delicious single malt in every part of its universe, from Glenmorangie House to its colourful new brand campaign, shot by famed photographer Miles Aldridge. With its tagline “It’s kind of delicious and wonderful”, Glenmorangie invites whisky lovers old and new to see themselves in Glenmorangie’s world.

About the Lighthouse Distillery:

The innovation distillery stands at the heart of Glenmorangie’s Highland Distillery, with its 20m-high glass stillhouse a new landmark for the site where Glenmorangie has been creating its single malt since 1843. Looking out over the Dornoch Firth, Glenmorangie’s Lighthouse recalls the many lighthouses dotted along Scotland’s dramatic coastline, originally built to help sailors navigate coastal waters. Designed by Paris-based Barthélémy Griño Architects, it will give Glenmorangie’s whisky creators unparalleled flexibility at all stages of their whisky-making, enabling them to vary the character of their spirit as never before. The innovation distillery has been created for experimentation rather than yield. Areas of innovation include:

  • The Lighthouse: This stunning glass tower offers all Glenmorangie’s visitors a glimpse of its two copper stills. Modelled on the 12 giraffe-high stills in Glenmorangie’s main still house, these new stills have been custom-designed by the Distillery’s whisky creators. Their many additional modifications will enable them to alter Glenmorangie’s spirit character in ways previously unimagined. For instance, by being made able to act as if they are shorter, they can create a heavier spirit, more akin to that created at Glenmorangie’s sister distillery, Ardbeg. By contrast, the stills can also be made to act as if they are even taller, to create a spirit even lighter than that which Glenmorangie already creates. Behind the Lighthouse’s glass façade is a wood-aluminium hybrid cladding. To reflect the delicious impact that wood has had on Glenmorangie’s taste over time, the cladding has been created with the bourbon and sherry casks used to create the limited expression Glenmorangie Lighthouse.
  • The Brewhouse: Next door, in this traditional-style building, experiments with barley, water and yeast will take place during mashing and brewing. These stand-alone facilities (including a mash tun custom-designed to influence spirit character by creating different clarities of wort) mean that the Lighthouse can operate entirely of its own accord. This allows its experimental work to continue unhindered, while the main Distillery remains dedicated to satisfying the world’s growing demand for Glenmorangie’s delicious signature single malt.
  • The Sensory Laboratory: Crucially, the position of the sensory lab, and the innovative nature of the distillery means that the team will be able to study raw spirit, rather than the mature spirit they would more usually work with. They will be able to assess their experiments after every six-hour spirit run, enjoying the flexibility to alter recipes in ways which would never be possible in the main Distillery. Complete with a tasting room and terrace, this floor will also give spectacular views of the neighbouring Dornoch Firth, to inspire those inside.
  • Power source: Glenmorangie is committed to preserving and sustaining its wonderful Highland surroundings. As a result, the Lighthouse will be partly powered by biogas, created in Glenmorangie’s own anaerobic digestion plant, from the by-products of distillation.

About Dr Bill Lumsden:

Dr Bill Lumsden’s favourite phrase is “What if?”. And throughout more than 25 years with Glenmorangie, the Distillery’s Creative Director has challenged himself and his team to take whatever captures their imaginations and turn it into whisky – be that the spirit and flavour of Glenmorangie’s homeland (the Cadboll Estate series), the magic of a cake moment (Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake), a cup of coffee (Glenmorangie Signet), and more. With a PhD in biochemistry and decades of experience, Dr Bill has all the skills needed to bring these ideas to life. Already, he has earned the admiration of his peers many times over. He features in the Icons of Whisky Hall of Fame. He has won the International Whisky Competition’s award for Master Distiller of the Year more times than anyone else. And he was named twice Master Blender/Distiller of the Year by the International Spirits Challenge.

About Glenmorangie Lighthouse:

This soft, fruity 12-year-old limited edition is inspired by the wondrous flavours yet to emerge from the Lighthouse innovation distillery. Aged in bourbon and sherry casks, it is uniquely bonded with its namesake: fragments of its casks are embedded in the walls of the Lighthouse, where they will play their part in the Distillery’s whisky creation for years to come. Just 3,000 numbered bottles exist.

Tasting Notes:

Glenmorangie Lighthouse is non chill-filtered and bottled at 48% ABV.

Colour: Bright sparkling gold

Nose: Fresh, bright, clean and perfumed, with soft velvety vanilla, fresh red apples, honeycomb and the merest whisper of oak. With water, a curious ‘green’ note like fresh pepper and olive.

Taste: A silky mouthfeel leads into honey, almond, milk chocolate, apricot and fudge, with hints of icing sugar, baked oranges, honeydew melon, and, again very much in the background, soft, sweet resinous oak wood.

Finish: More orange, vanilla and oaky notes.

RRP: £85, available exclusively from the Distillery Visitor Centre.

About Glenmorangie’s pioneering work in wood finishing:

Glenmorangie is widely celebrated for putting wood-finished whisky on the map, creating a new category of single malt. The art of wood finishing involves transferring aged single malt into wine casks or other cask types to add even more delicious layers of flavour. Taking what was a fledgling idea when he joined Glenmorangie in 1995, Dr Bill experimented with an imaginative array of cask types, ranging from claret (1997) to fino sherry (1998) and Côte de Nuits wine (2000). In this way, Glenmorangie has brought to life myriad new tastes and begun a new trend in world whisky. Over the next two decades, much of the industry has followed suit.

About Glenmorangie Signet:

Released in 2008, Glenmorangie Signet is arguably the most innovative Scotch whisky created for generations. Dr Bill first dreamed of this whisky years before, as he enjoyed a cup of his favourite Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. That simple pleasure filled his mind with spiralling mocha flavours. It would take him years to bring Signet to life, but its notes of tiramisu and melting chocolate reflect his most delicious imaginings. Signet’s origins lie in Glenmorangie’s precious chocolate malt spirit, made just once a year from barley which has been tumble-roasted, rather like coffee beans. Its espresso-like intensity fills the Distillery with aromas more familiar in an Italian coffee bar. Over the years, its power is tempered with rare and treasured casks: bourbon for creaminess, sherry for sweetness and the spice of virgin charred oak, all balanced by some of Glenmorangie’s oldest stocks. The result is a velvet explosion of flavour, so adored by the experts that Signet was named IWC Whisky of the Year in 2016.

About Glenmorangie’s Private Edition series:

This award-winning series of experimental limited editions has showcased Glenmorangie’s imaginative ways over a decade, with a number of world firsts. Among its 10 delicious releases are:

  • Glenmorangie Artein, a deep and rich whisky, the first single malt Scotch whisky finished in Super Tuscan wine barrels;
  • Glenmorangie Companta, a spicy and sweet whisky, the first single malt Scotch whisky part-finished in Clos de Tart casks;
  • Glenmorangie Tùsail, a rich, rustic whisky, the first single malt Scotch whisky created with rare Maris Otter barley;
  • Glenmorangie Spìos, a subtly spiced whisky, the first single malt Scotch whisky fully matured in ex-American rye whisky casks;

Glenmorangie Allta, a fruity, rich whisky, the first single malt Scotch whisky created from the wild yeast that grows on Glenmorangie’s barley.

Responsible Drinking:

The Glenmorangie Company advocates responsible drinking and suggests that drinkers savour Glenmorangie whiskies in moderation and in line with recommended daily guidelines for alcohol consumption.

Bourbon Women, Kentucky Distillers’ Association Salute Distinguished Tourism Visionary – American Whiskey News

Bourbon Women, Kentucky Distillers’ Association Salute Distinguished Tourism Visionary

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Karen Williams, retired President and CEO of Louisville Tourism, received the eighth annual “Lois Mateus Networking Award” last week in honor of her distinguished contributions to Kentucky’s signature Bourbon and spirits industry.

Bourbon Women Founder and Chair Emeritus Peggy Noe Stevens and KDA President Eric Gregory applauded Williams for her outstanding work establishing Louisville as a Bourbon destination brand.

“Karen Williams’s illustrious career in tourism and her compelling commitment to Bourbon tourism was a driving force in our industry,” Stevens said. “Her leadership in guiding Louisville to become a top destination for Bourbon is not only appreciated by our industry, but we honor her through this award.”

Williams’s 40 year career in the hospitality industry began in Atlanta where she worked as a sales manager at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. During that time, she helped open 18 hotels worldwide.

She relocated to Louisville to serve 23 years at the Louisville Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Williams also served as chairwoman of the Destination and Travel Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to highlighting the impact of travel around the world and serving destination marketing professionals.

In 2012, Williams retired as Executive Vice President. That same year, she received the Dan Mangeot Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of tourism.

In 2014, Williams returned as President and CEO of the Louisville CVB – the agency now known as Louisville Tourism – where she made it a priority to work with the KDA to establish the first Kentucky Bourbon Trail® experiences in downtown Louisville along the historic Whiskey Row.

Under her leadership, Louisville boasted eight Bourbon Trail™ distillery destinations – the most of any other city.

In addition, Williams helped KDA launch the illustrious Kentucky Bourbon Affair fantasy camp that brings Bourbon aficionados from all around the world to Louisville and surrounding communities each year.

KDA President Eric Gregory said Williams’s steadfast and fair leadership was key to aligning the Bourbon industry and its tourism partners. “Karen is one of the finest global ambassadors for Kentucky’s signature Bourbon and distilled spirits industry – and the Commonwealth at large – that you will ever find,” he said.

Gregory also remarked on Williams’s push to integrate Bourbon into all facets of the visitor experience by elevating Louisville as a top “foodie” city and working with Mayor Greg Fischer on “Bourbonism” initiatives including Bourbon-themed hotels and music festivals.

“She has transformed the Bourbon tourism landscape for the state, which is evidenced by the millions of distillery tours given each year. This award is our way of honoring her vision and commitment to the success of our Commonwealth’s beloved heritage.”

The award is named for Lois Mateus, retired Senior Vice President of Brown-Forman, Inc., and the first woman ever to serve on the KDA Board. Her two-year term in 1992 paved the way for other women in high-ranking roles throughout Kentucky’s signature Bourbon industry.

Williams thanked the KDA and Bourbon Women for the honor and was presented with the award last Friday evening at Bourbon Women’s annual SIPosium Welcome Dinner.

“It is such a true privilege and honor to be recognized with an award that was named for Lois Mateus, someone that I have always admired, a true trailblazer, a woman with such style and grace,” Williams said.

“I am also honored to have had the opportunity to work with the KDA team – they are so committed, so professional and a true partner to the tourism industry. Working with KDA, the distilled spirits is one of the top brand pillars of our industry, we are the envy of our industry – worldwide”.

The award is given annually by Bourbon Women in conjunction with the KDA based on the following criteria for a woman who has:

·     Excelled in her profession by continuously building key relationships to contribute to the growth in her respective industry

·     Broken through barriers to grow her career

·     Contributed to the community through service and philanthropy

·     Increased exposure for other women to grow their networking and career opportunities

·     Developed creative partnerships and strategic alliances to further the growth of her respective industry

·     Become a role model for female professionalism

Bourbon Women is a premier organization for women who are passionate about exploring Bourbon and the culture that surrounds it.

Designed exclusively for educational, networking and charitable purposes, Bourbon Women’s fast-growing membership is made up of women from over 30 states and continues to form new branches across the country.

Since its inception, the Bourbon Women Association has inspired books on women in the industry, created partnerships with key industry associations, held the first Bourbon weekend for women and continues to raise money for philanthropies through their unique, high-quality events.

GLENALLACHIE RELEASES CASK STRENGTH OLOROSO-FINISHED WHISKY EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE UK – Scotch Whisky News

GLENALLACHIE RELEASES CASK STRENGTH OLOROSO-FINISHED

WHISKY EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE UK

The Scotch whisky distillery, led by iconic Master Distiller Billy Walker, debuts

single malt finished in Oloroso casks for UK market

The multi-award-winning Speyside distillery behind the World’s Best Single Malt (World Whiskies Awards, 2021) today reveals a limited-edition created exclusively for the UK. The GlenAllachie 14-year-old Oloroso Wood Finish joins the innovative Wood Finish series.

Presented at natural cask strength of 55.4%, the 14-year-old single malt (UK RRSP £89.99) is a small-batch release initially matured in first and second fill American oak barrels, before being re-racked for over two years aging in Oloroso puncheons personally sourced by whisky industry stalwart Billy Walker.

Walker has earnt widespread acclaim for his superlative wood management and blending expertise. After an almost half century in the whisky industry, Walker was inducted into Whisky Magazine’s Hall of Fame earlier this year for his exceptional and lasting contribution to the world of whisky.

After closely monitoring the maturing spirit within the Oloroso-seasoned Spanish oak casks, Walker determined when the perfect balance between distillery and wood character was achieved. The whisky was then bottled without added colouring or chill filtration.

The result is an exceptional single malt that delivers rich sherry-matured indulgence; notes of sticky raisins, gooey dark chocolate pudding, zesty orange and fresh espresso, all coupled with classic GlenAllachie honeyed charm.

Commenting on the exciting UK release, Walker said:

“As soon as we acquired The GlenAllachie distillery, I knew exactly what direction I wanted us to take the liquid in; a single malt known for its bold, indulgent sherried character.

“This UK bottling is no different, with all those archetypal Oloroso tones you would expect – rich cocoa, cinnamon sticks, tangy orange and fresh ginger, all alongside a warming mocha depth. A sophisticated single malt that exemplifies the exciting direction that we have been taking The GlenAllachie in.”

The GlenAllachie 14-year-old Oloroso Wood Finish is available now exclusively from UK specialist retailers, with an RRSP of £89.99.

ABOUT GLENALLACHIE:

One of Scotland’s few independently owned and managed distilleries, The GlenAllachie is led by industry veteran, Billy Walker, who boasts an almost 50-year tenure in whisky. With an emphasis on wood policy, The GlenAllachie’s cask budget for 2021 stands at an eye-watering £1m/$1.2m. With 16 on-site warehouses holding over 50,000 casks, we have complete control of the end-to-end maturation process.

The GlenAllachie focusses on quality over quantity, which is why we chose to reduce our production capacity from 4m to 500,000 Litres of Alcohol, and increase our fermentation period to 160 hours for an ester rich, fruity spirit.

We believe age and integrity matter, which is why all our whiskies carry an age statement, and are bottled at a minimum of 46% ABV, natural colour and non-chill filtered for maximum flavour experience.

Our other brands are MacNair’s Boutique House of Spirits, encompassing Lum Reek Blended Malt Scotch Whisky and Exploration Rum, and White Heather Blended Scotch Whisky.

F. Paul Pacult Releases 7th Book: BUFFALO, BARRELS, & BOURBON: The Story of How Buffalo Trace Distillery Became the World’s Most Awarded Distillery – American Whiskey News

F. Paul Pacult’s Buffalo, Barrels, & Bourbon Set to Publish September 8th

The saga that chronicles a remarkable whiskey-making legacy, born  on a low bank of the Kentucky River, where for millennia vast herds of buffalo crossed searching for richer pastures

Hawthorne, NY (August 31, 2021) – The world’s most respected, honored, and trusted spirits authority, F. Paul Pacult, is set to release his seventh book, Buffalo, Barrels, & Bourbon: The Story of How Buffalo Trace Distillery Became the World’s Most Awarded Distillery on September 8, 2021.

Buffalo, Barrels, & Bourbon tells the compelling story of Buffalo Trace Distillery, located in Frankfort, Kentucky. With chapters ranging from “…As Crooked as a Dog’s Hind Leg…” to “Resistance is Futile” this book delivers in depth storytelling, pictures, timelines, sidebars and more. It spans the time of Daniel Boone’s late eighteenth century explorations in uncharted Kentucky through the trials of the U.S. Civil War, two world wars, Prohibition, and the Great Depression to the present era. Pacult’s meticulously researched account explains why Buffalo Trace Distillery has won more than 1,000 awards from around the world for whiskey distilling excellence.

Described in Imbibe magazine (May/June 2020) as “an all-knowing spirituous oracle, a J.D. Powers of liquor”, F. Paul Pacult is a critic, journalist, educator, and the creator of F. Paul Pacult’s Spirit Journal who has been writing about spirits since 1989. His previous books have included Kindred Spirits, American Still Life, A Double Scotch, and the recently released The New Kindred Spirits.

Respected industry influencers who have praised Buffalo, Barrels, & Bourbon:

“This book is more than just a history of a world-class distillery. Pacult uses the story of Buffalo Trace to tell the very story of bourbon itself — the very story of Kentucky itself — with expert verve and wit. An immediate classic.”

Clay Risen, author of American Whiskey, Bourbon and Rye: A Guide to the Nation’s Favorite Spirit

“I could listen to Paul Pacult tell stories about the Buffalo Trace Distillery for days on end. That’s a lot to ask of a guy, though, so I read his engaging book instead. And man, did it ever speak to me. It’s an exhaustively researched and deftly written historical tome that is guaranteed to make you thirsty. With Buffalo, Barrels & Bourbon, Paul Pacult continues his longtime reign as America’s finest spirits scribe.”

Dan Dunn, author of American Wino: A Tale of Reds, Whites and One Man’s Blues

“Historically, a “buffalo trace” was the path ground away by herd of migrating bison. There were no maps to guide the pioneers along those trails, but in Buffalo, Barrels, & Bourbon, Paul has provided an excellent map to the trail of one of Kentucky’s legendary distilleries. While the Buffalo Trace brand may be just a couple of decades old, it is built on a legacy dating back to the days of the pioneers and Paul’s extensive research provides the definitive guide to the story of Buffalo Trace from the Lees, Taylors, and Staggs to today’s award-winning distillers.”

Mark Gillespie, Host/Executive Producer, WhiskyCast

The ideal  book for any whiskey lover, Buffalo, Barrels, & Bourbon will be released in hard copy and E-book version on September 8, 2021 and will be available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Indiebound, Bookshop.

SMOKEHEAD EXPRESSIONS:

RUM REBEL

The rich, smoky, salty Islay whisky rebel is finished in spicy, sweet Caribbean rum casks creating culture colliding carnage and a melding of mouth-watering tastes.

SMOKEHEAD

Smokehead Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the original expression, an intensely rich yet subtly sweet dram. With immense smoke and notes of sea salt and spice, this is a vigorous whisky that stands out from the crowd.

HIGH VOLTAGE

If Smokehead is an assault on your senses, then High Voltage is an all-out attack. The breath-taking intensity of the peat and smoke is a red light for the faint of heart.

SHERRY BOMB

A peaty Islay single malt that has well and truly earned its name. Blasted by rich, sweet and spicy Spanish sherry casks, it has emerged as a fiery, explosive, heavy hitting dram that has even turned our skull red.–
