BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY INTRODUCES NEXT CHAPTER IN THE DANIEL WELLER EXPERIMENTAL LINE: SPELT WHEAT – American Whiskey News

BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY INTRODUCES NEXT CHAPTER IN THE DANIEL WELLER EXPERIMENTAL LINE: SPELT WHEAT

The latest edition of the Daniel Weller line explores how one of the world’s oldest wheat strains shapes the flavor of “The Original Wheated Bourbon”

FRANKFORT, KY (March 24, 2026) – Buffalo Trace Distillery proudly announces the release of Daniel Weller Spelt Wheat, the second edition from its experimental Daniel Weller series. Launched in 2023 with Emmer Wheat, the line honors the pioneering spirit of Daniel Weller – grandfather of William Larue Weller and an early contributor to the family’s bourbon-making legacy – by examining how individual wheat varietals impact the flavor profile of Weller, the Original Wheated Bourbon. Each release is designed as a focused experiment, inviting deeper appreciation for how a single variable can meaningfully shape the final whiskey.

Recognized for its subtle sweetness and gentle nuttiness, spelt wheat is rarely used in whiskey production. Cultivated for thousands of years primarily in Europe, spelt is closely associated with traditional, small-scale grain farming and artisanal baking. The distillation team at Buffalo Trace was drawn to spelt not only for its flavor potential, but for its historical significance as one of the earliest cultivated wheat varieties, reflecting the Distillery’s commitment to honoring tradition while embracing change through purposeful experimentation. By using spelt in place of rye as the secondary grain, this release builds upon the soft, smooth profile that defines Weller bourbons while allowing the wheat’s character to shape the whiskey’s aroma, texture, and flavor.

“Rather than leaning on barrel innovation, we chose to strip the process back and let the wheat speak for itself,” says Harlen Wheatley, Master Distiller at Buffalo Trace Distillery. “By avoiding specialized barrel treatments and techniques, we were able to focus on how spelt wheat’s natural sweetness and distinct character influence the Weller mashbill. Its nuanced profile makes it ideal for experiments where the grain’s personality is meant to shine.”

Bottled at 94 proof, Daniel Weller Spelt Wheat marks a clear departure from classic Weller wheated bourbons, reaching its ideal flavor and balance after 10 years of maturation. It opens with a nutty, biscuit-forward nose shaped by the spelt grain. Aromas of freshly baked cookies, clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg are supported by light fresh fruit, subtle leather, with underlying notes of butterscotch, caramel, vanilla and oak. On the palate, dried fruit and gentle sweetness are layered with baking spice, while a restrained floral, tea-like character adds dimension. The finish is long and composed, carrying soft fruit, nuttiness and light spice with a fading, lingering sweetness.

The foundation for this experimental work was laid by Daniel Weller, who played a formative role in the early development of bourbon distilling. After settling in Kentucky in 1794, he carried a family tradition of distillation, rooted in American barter culture. By operating and leasing his still to proprietors, Weller expanded both access to and influence within the growing spirits trade, embedding distilling into his family’s legacy. His entrepreneurial approach laid the groundwork for future generations and helped shape the wheated bourbon tradition that would later define the Weller name in American whiskey history.

“Daniel Weller set a standard for ingenuity that still guides us today,” adds Charley Costa Jr., Brand Manager for Daniel Weller. “This line reflects that same pioneering mindset. By experimenting with distinctive wheat varietals like spelt, we’re honoring Daniel Weller’s legacy while challenging ourselves to explore new dimensions of flavor. Each release is an opportunity to connect our history to the future of American whiskey.”

Each Daniel Weller release is stored in a 750ml glass bottle with a unique compass stopper. In homage to Daniel Weller, the coordinates of his farm near Botland, Kentucky, are inscribed beneath the stopper.

Daniel Weller Spelt Wheat will be available in limited quantities to distributors, shipping to select retailers, bars and restaurants across the U.S. starting March 2026 at a suggested retail price of $549.99 (750ml); state taxes vary. The Daniel Weller series also includes Emmer Wheat (2023) and is part of the broader Weller Wheated Bourbon portfolio, including Weller Special Reserve, Weller Antique 107, Weller 12 Year Old, Weller Full Proof, Weller C.Y.P.B., Weller Single Barrel and William Larue Weller, one of the most sought-after whiskeys released annually as part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection.

Maker’s Mark Unveils 2026 Wood Finishing Series: The Stewards Release – American Whiskey News

Maker’s Mark Unveils 2026 Wood Finishing Series: The Stewards Release

LORETTO, Ky., Maker’s Mark, the iconic handmade Kentucky bourbon, today announced the 2026 release of its Wood Finishing Series: The Stewards Release—an expression inspired by the distillery’s operations teams who guide the bourbon’s journey from first fermentation to final bottling.

“From the beginning, Maker’s Mark has been guided by my grandparents’ pursuit of exceptional flavor and deep respect for everyone who makes our whisky—from our grain growers to those who barrel and bottle our bourbon,” said Rob Samuels, eighth-generation whisky maker and managing director, Maker’s Mark. “We continue to honor our founders’ vision through the Wood Finishing Series, which showcases our innovative spirit, celebrates our quality and craftsmanship and recognizes the teams who make our whisky possible.”

The Maker’s Mark Wood Finishing Series features one-of-a-kind expressions crafted using an innovative wood stave finishing technique that amplifies the distinctive characteristics of the brand’s signature bourbon. The Stewards Release (2026) opens with bright aromas evoking cherry pie and vanilla bean, layered with tasting notes of honey, toasted marshmallow and candied ginger, culminating in a vibrant finish marked by stone fruit and salted caramel.

“Consumers today want exceptional whisky, but they’re also interested in the values behind the brand and the people who make it,” said Dr. Blake Layfield, master distiller at Maker’s Mark. “Bartenders feel the same way. They want to know more about the process, the ingredients and the craftsmanship in what they pour. The Stewards Release brings that philosophy to life, inspired by the operational leaders at Star Hill Farm and the care that goes into every step of production.”

Marking the midpoint of a five-year journey, the Stewards Release (2026) is the third installment in the second Wood Finishing Series. Set to conclude in 2028, this series explores the people behind the proof and follows The Keepers Release (2025), inspired by the warehouse team who ensure every barrel of Maker’s Mark matures consistently to the founders’ taste vision, and The Heart Release (2024), inspired by the distillery team—the makers of Maker’s Mark, crafting its handmade bourbon in Loretto, Kentucky.

The Stewards Release will be delivered in two batches: one at 59.4% ABV / 109.6 proof, and the other at 56.65% ABV / 113.3 proof. Both will be available at U.S. retailers at a suggested MSRP of $74.99 beginning today. For more information, please visit www.MakersMark.com.

About Maker’s Mark
Maker’s Mark® is the iconic handmade Kentucky bourbon driven by a vision for better flavor and a better world. In 1953, founders Margie and Bill Samuels, Sr. broke from tradition—burning the family’s 170-year-old recipe to create a bold, balanced bourbon made with soft red winter wheat for signature sweetness and creaminess. From the start, the Samuels went to remarkable lengths to craft uncompromisingly delicious bourbon—a perfectly unreasonable spirit that endures today. Every bottle is still hand-dipped in red wax, every barrel rotated by hand and every decision guided by the brand’s higher purpose.

Staying true to its founders’ vision, Maker’s Mark has expanded its portfolio with award-winning, super-premium expressions, including Maker’s Mark 46, Cask Strength, and Cellar Aged, as well as Private Selection, the brand’s custom barrel program. In 2025, the distillery debuted Star Hill Farm Whisky, its first-ever wheat whisky. Award-winning and the first to earn Estate Whiskey certification, Star Hill Farm Whisky inspired the Maker’s Mark Regenerative Alliance, a bold commitment to advance regenerative farming beyond its business, inviting farms, bars and restaurants to join the movement.

Maker’s Mark is proud to be both B Corp and Regenified Certified – milestones driven by the sustainability leadership at Star Hill Farm, home of the Maker’s Mark Distillery, which strives to be the most endearing, culturally rich and environmentally responsible homeplace in the world.

Loch Lomond Whiskies presents The Original Series – Scotch Whisky News

Loch Lomond Whiskies presents The Original Series

A trio of remarkable whiskies demonstrating flavour innovation at its finest

Loch Lomond Whiskies has announced the launch of The Original Series – an exceptional trio of single malt whiskies focusing on innovation in flavour through expert distillation and maturation.

Launching today (24 March 2026), The Original Series is a celebration of Loch Lomond Whiskies’ unique capabilities in flavour creation, using the Highland distillery’s remarkable Straight Neck Stills and traditional Swan Neck Stills and a range of cask finishes to create recognisable tasting profiles.

The Original Series combines one existing single malt from Loch Lomond’s award-winning portfolio, with the addition of two new expressions, never seen from the distiller.

Together the relaunched range offers three distinctive single malts – Loch Lomond The Original: Triple Oak, Loch Lomond Oloroso: Sherry Cask, and Loch Lomond Peated: Rioja Cask – all of which are expertly crafted by master blender, Michael Henry, whose signature on each bottle signifies the distillery’s personal assurance of quality.

The series embodies Loch Lomond Whiskies’ enduring quest to unlock new possibilities in flavour innovation and whisky creation, showcasing dual expertise maturation and distillation. Loch Lomond is the only distillery in Scotland to house both traditional Swan Neck Stills and its unique Straight Neck Stills, making it one of the most innovative and inventive in the world. Loch Lomond is also one of only four distilleries in Scotland with its own cooperage on-site, where the ancient craft of barrel repairs is not just preserved, but carefully passed down through generations.

The leading non-age-statement product in Loch Lomond’s new range, Loch Lomond The Original: Triple Oak is the same perfectly balanced expression and is now presented in a newly enhanced pack which details the impact of cask maturation on the spirit’s signature style of fruit, honey and soft smoke. This classic expression has been carefully matured in three types of American oak cask – first fill, refill and re-char – and showcases distillate from both the distillery’s straight neck and traditional swan neck stills. Loch Lomond The Original: Triple Oak has an RRP of £28 per 70cl bottle. It is now available to buy at www.lochlomondwhiskies.com and will be rolling out in Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Morrisons and Asda from March 2026 onwards.

Launching for the first time is the new Loch Lomond Oloroso: Sherry Cask – an innovative Highland single malt that reimagines sherry-finished whisky. The single malt is expertly distilled in Loch Lomond Whiskies’ iconic Straight Neck Stills and finished for six months in certified Oloroso sherry casks. Marrying a fruit-forward distillate with an Oloroso sherry cask finish, Loch Lomond Oloroso: Sherry Cask imparts flavours of vanilla, raisins and brown sugar.

Crafted in a combination of Swan Neck and Straight Neck Stills before being finished for six months in the finest Rioja wine casks, Loch Lomond Peated: Rioja Cask showcases Loch Lomond Whiskies’ innovative approach and unrivalled capabilities in maturation. The new addition to the portfolio pairs a fruit and smoke-forward whisky with flavourful world-famous red wine casks from Spain to create impactful notes of honey, peach, pear and dark chocolate.

Loch Lomond Oloroso: Sherry Cask and Loch Lomond Peated: Rioja Cask single malt whiskies have an RRP of £31 per 70cl bottle and are now available to buy on www.lochlomondwhiskies.com before rolling out in retailers throughout 2026.

Each single malt whisky is bottled at 40% ABV and is presented in a newly enhanced outer pack carrying illustrations of the distillery’s namesake loch in hues of cobalt blue, burgundy and mauve.

Michael Henry, master blender at Loch Lomond Whiskies, said: “At Loch Lomond, we respect but are not constrained by tradition, as we navigate our own path to freely explore flavour in our own way. This is what it means to be Scotland’s most agile and adept Scotch distillery.

“The release of The Original Series demonstrates our continued growth in non-age-statement flavour profiles, bringing three standout expressions to retail that showcase our award-winning craftsmanship and commitment to first-class distillation and maturation.

“As well as our unrivalled capabilities in flavour creation through our Straight Neck Stills, at Loch Lomond we also have the benefit of our on-site cooperage, which allows us to carry out barrel repairs and charring to exacting standards and make sure each cask is the right quality for maturing our single malt whisky.”

First opened in 1965, Loch Lomond Distillery has been quietly crafting whisky on the banks of the loch for more than 60 years. In the past decade, investment in whisky-making innovation and global marketing has propelled the brand to new heights. Now enjoyed by millions worldwide, Loch Lomond Whiskies is the fastest-growing top 25 single malt brand in the world for two out of three recent years (IWSR).

About Loch Lomond Whiskies

Loch Lomond Whiskies is an award-winning, independent Scotch whisky distiller which has been producing the finest single malt whiskies since 1814.  As a Highland malt, it is part of the largest and most diverse whisky-making region in Scotland.

The original site of the Loch Lomond Distillery was established near Tarbert, towards the northwest end of Loch Lomond. In the 1960s, under the leadership of American entrepreneur and chemist, Duncan Scott (who was instrumental in the ongoing success of Scotland’s oldest licensed distillery, Littlemill), a new site was created in Alexandria, which began a move to a more innovative philosophy and style of whisky-making that is still used today.

Located only a few miles from the famous loch, the distillery has a whisky-making capability like no other, using a combination of traditional swan-neck and its signature straight-neck-stills, which are unique to Loch Lomond Whiskies.

The straight neck stills give Master Blender Michael Henry greater control over the distillation process, allowing him to carefully manipulate the flavour profile of each whisky, and providing a signature fruit, honey and soft smoke flavour profile.

Loch Lomond Whiskies is one of only four distillers in Scotland to have its own onsite cooperage, ensuring that barrel repairs and charring are carried out to an exacting standard, so every cask is perfect for maturing whisky.

The distillery’s multi-award-winning range includes Loch Lomond Original; Loch Lomond 12 Year Old; Loch Lomond 12 Year Old; Loch Lomond Inchmoan 12 Year Old; Loch Lomond Inchmurrin 12 Year Old; Loch Lomond 18 Year Old; Loch Lomond 21 Year Old and Loch Lomond 30 Year Old, as well as Loch Lomond Single Grain (peated and unpeated) and the deluxe blend Loch Lomond Signature.

In 2023, it was recognised as the ‘Most Awarded Distillery’ at the globally renowned San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2023, achieving multiple Double Gold and Gold Awards for its collection of malt whisky brands.

Last year, Loch Lomond 18 Year Old was revealed as The Whisky Exchange’s coveted ‘Whisky of the Year 2024’, achieving superior scores from the judging panel for its full-bodied and fruity character.

Loch Lomond Whiskies was also named among Drinks International’s ‘The World’s Most Admired Whiskies 2025’, where it was noted as one of the most capable distilleries in Scotland.

Rhythm and Booze Records Releases Its First Whisky Blended Directly to Match an Artist’s Sound

Rhythm and Booze Records Releases Its First Whisky Blended Directly to Match an Artist’s Sound

The award-winning indie bottler and record label releases its fourth bottle in collaboration with fellow indie bottler Cask Le Sens, a superb blended Scotch inspired by the music of Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter Nicole Cassandra Smit.

Tasting exceptional spirits while listening to great music is one of life’s great pleasures. Now, the indie bottler and record label that embodies this combination is back with its most ambitious release yet.

Rhythm and Booze Records, the world’s first combination independent record label and spirits bottler, has released its fourth bottle: Rhythm and Booze Records #4: Nicole Cassandra Smit — Blended Scotch Whisky, created in collaboration with whisky consultancy company and indie bottler Cask Le Sens. The release pairs an expertly crafted blended Scotch whisky with an exclusive collection of original songs by Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter Nicole Cassandra Smit, recorded specifically for this bottle and available nowhere else.

As with all Rhythm and Booze Records spirits, the bottle’s front label showcases the featured artist, while a QR code on the back label leads to a private link where buyers can stream or download Nicole’s new songs to enjoy as they pour themselves a dram. The music is exclusive to the bottle and will not be available on any streaming platform.

This is the first Rhythm and Booze Records release to reverse the creative process: rather than curating a ready-to-bottle spirit to pair with the featured tunes, the creation of this whisky was directly inspired by Nicole’s music and blended together by Cask Le Sens co-founder Winnie Ng. The result is a blend that mirrors Nicole’s sound – initially sweet, easygoing and accessible, before revealing surprising depth and playful complexity the longer you sit with it.

Felipe Schrieberg, co-founder of Rhythm and Booze Records, describes the creative philosophy behind the release: “This is the first time we’ve created a whisky that was directly inspired by the music rather than the other way around. Nicole’s sound shaped the decisions made at the blending table. The result is something we’re genuinely proud of not just as a whisky or a music release, but as a single unified artistic statement.”

Winnie welcomed working on the ambitious challenge: “This is a project I have been longing to bring to life: curating a whisky that truly connects with music, to build a blend from scratch that fits the vibe and voice of a specific artist without any shortcuts and no pre-blended whisky in the recipe.”

To create the whisky, she included a significant portion of 35-year-old Invergordon grain whisky which contributes creamy, buttery richness at the heart of the expression. Malts sourced from Speyside and the Highlands provide structural integrity and fruity character.

Nicole is also thrilled about the new bottle featuring her music. Born in Jakarta, Indonesia and raised in Stockholm, Sweden, she draws on a rich and varied background, weaving together blues, soul, R&B, and pop across a deeply personal body of work. She first made her name on the Scottish live scene through sell-out performances at the Edinburgh Fringe and Jazz & Blues Festival, fronting acts including Nicole & The Back-Up Crew and lo-fi trio Smitten. Her 2022 debut solo album Third in Line blends soul and blues with experimental electronica.

For this release, Nicole revisits her lo-fi roots with a deeply personal collection of songs celebrating her heritage and family.

“I wanted these songs to feel intimate and honest,” Nicole says. “And I think the whisky captures that same feeling, something warm and welcoming on the surface, but with real depth and character underneath.”

Rhythm and Booze Records #4: Nicole Cassandra Smit – Blended Scotch Whisky is bottled at 50% ABV with only 300 bottles available and is available for £65 on the website for Cask Le Sens’ UK distributor Ruiseart Spirits as well as select retailers.

Glen Scotia unveils bold new limited-edition whisky for Campbeltown Malts Festival 2026 – Scotch Whisky News

Glen Scotia unveils bold new limited-edition whisky for Campbeltown Malts Festival 2026

Multi-award award winning Campbeltown distillery Glen Scotia has revealed its anticipated, limited-edition single malt in celebration of the renowned Campbeltown Malts Festival which draws whisky lovers from around the world to visit the region each May.

Glen Scotia’s annual festival bottlings have built a reputation for bold, intriguing flavours and the Campbeltown Malts Festival 2026 release continues this tradition. Aged for seven years, this medium-peated single malt was matured in first-fill bourbon barrels before being finished for six months in ruby port casks, creating a whisky that balances vibrancy, depth and an unmistakable coastal character.

The distinctive dual cask maturation has resulted in big flavours of ripe red fruit, gentle sweet peat and warming spice, carried on a rich, coastal undertone that reflects Glen Scotia’s maritime trade history.

Once known as the ‘Victorian whisky capital of the world’, Campbeltown is a place steeped in rich whisky heritage. Hailing from what is now Scotland’s smallest whisky-producing region, Glen Scotia’s small team preserves traditional methods, using small stills to create big Campbeltown flavours and making big waves at big international awards.

The Campbeltown Malts Festival is a flagship event in Glen Scotia’s calendar, welcoming thousands of visitors each year to experience the distillery’s big Campbeltown character and the warmth and generosity of the ‘Wee Toon’. The 2026 festival edition celebrates not only the whisky itself, but also the people who define the town’s resilient character.

Presented in a premium navy blue box, the Campbeltown Malts Festival 2026 Release also features a unique on-pack experience. By scanning a QR code on the box, whisky fans can step inside the distillery and meet members of the Glen Scotia team whose craft, passion and pride bring to life its big Campbeltown character.

Available to purchase online and in specialist retailers globally, Glen Scotia’s Campbeltown Malts Festival 2026 release is non-chill filtered, bottled at cask strength (53.9% ABV) and will retail for £59.

Ashley Smith, master blender at Glen Scotia, said: “This year’s Festival Release is a true celebration of Glen Scotia’s big Campbeltown character. It offers Glen Scotia’s distinctive maritime salinity, which is complemented with layers of gentle peat, and vibrant red fruit and warming spice brought by the ruby port cask finish. It’s a whisky that evolves on the palate and brings an element of surprise.

“The Campbeltown Malts Festival is always a special time for us, when the town comes alive with visitors from around the world. With this year’s on-pack experience, we’re giving people a glimpse inside the distillery in our remote corner of Scotland and the people whose passion shapes every drop.

“Campbeltown may be small, but it has a big personality and a proud heritage. This year’s festival bottling is our way of capturing that spirit in the glass for our community to enjoy.”

Glen Scotia’s Campbeltown Malts Festival 2026 events (19 and 20 May) will explore the distillery’s rich whisky-making heritage. A selection of ticketed and free events will delve into the town’s storied past, offering visitors the chance to explore and learn about some of Glen Scotia’s finest drams.

Guests at this year’s festival will get a taste of Glen Scotia’s character through a range of workshops including ‘Big Campbeltown Character’, which will explore the tropical fruit, coastal notes and oily texture of the new Glen Scotia 12 Year Old with Loch Lomond Group’s master blender Michael Henry.

A ‘Deconstructed Festival Release 2026’ tasting will see Glen Scotia brand ambassador Gary Mills reveal the craftsmanship behind this year’s limited-edition release, and ‘Port to Port’ will trace Campbeltown’s maritime past with Glen Scotia’s master blender Ashley Smith, showing how sherry, rum and wine casks continue to shape Glen Scotia’s style.

Distiller Glen Scotia has been producing single malt whisky in Campbeltown since 1832 and is one of three surviving distilleries in Campbeltown.
