TOP PICKS

• Old Weller Antique 107 proof Straight Bourbon Whiskey 750ml ($19.99)
Buffalo Trace distillery’s classic wheated-bourbon formula, substituting wheat for rye as the flavor grain in addition to the corn. The result is the same creamy, full-bodied whiskey that made the Van Winkles so famous. Now that all the Pappy is made at Buffalo Trace distillery, it’s actually all made from the same formula. This one just happens to cost $19.99 instead. Our official house Bourbon here at K&L.

Glengoyne Tees Off Top Fundraising Total in Fife – Scotch Whisky News

AA AD.png

Glengoyne tees off top fundraising total in Fife

The Glengoyne Golf Day, one of Scotland’s most prestigious fundraising events, was a ‘hole in one’ as it raised £9,250 for the military’s leading charities: The Soldiers’ Charity, RAFBF, Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity and Help for Heroes. The money was raised via ticket sales for a fantastic day of golf at the Torrance Course, The Fairmont St Andrews and the Gala Dinner.

Guests were entertained by Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Band (Scotland), The Buglers of 3 RIFLES and the Pipes & Drums of 1 SCOTS. Compelling speeches and stories came from senior members of our Armed Forces including Air Commodore Gerry Mayhew, Major Bob Stuart MBE, Captain Chris Smith of Royal Navy Regional Commander Scotland and Colonel Phil Bates – Commander Edinburgh Garrison. A great event for a great cause.

Balvenie 12yo 40% Double Wood 70cl –
Was £38.99  Today’s offer price – £32.50 (save £6.49)

Tasting Notes:

Nose: The skins of Seville oranges. The apricot note of Oloroso sherry.

anCnoc 12yo 40% 70cl –

Was £35.75  Today’s offer price – £29.50 (save £6.25)

Tasting Notes:

Nose: An aggressive pepperiness bites deep into the usual grassy maltiness and coal smoke. Excellent depth and complexity, though slightly more aggressive, if younger, in style than of old.

Palate: Absolutely fabulous, near-perfect, malt arrival, perhaps the most clean, yet intense of any in Scotland. The complexity is staggering with not only multi-layers of malt but a distant peat and oak fusion.

Finish: Deliciously spicy.

(Tasting Notes by Jim Murray, Whisky Bible 2011.)

Glen Moray Classic 40% 70cl –

Was £22.99  Today’s offer price – £18.99 (save £4.00)

Tasting Notes:

Nose: At full strength the aroma is fragrant and lightly drying with warming malty notes. The first impression is of butterscotch and shortbread with fresh herbal/grassy notes. Lemon curd and meringue are discovered in the background.

Palate: The mouthfeel is lightly spiced with a warming and gently mouth watering effect. Malty toffee sweetness is present throughout with blackcurrants and a fragrant citrus lemongrass tang.

Finish: Shortbread fresh herbal notes (lemongrass) and the sweet spiciness of ginger marmalade.

Whisky Ramblings Via Video #67

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, enjoys the new Auchentoshan 14 Year Old by Cadenheads, one of the oldest and still independently owned bottlers. Mark Watt recently joined the company at its HQ in Campbeltown and launched the new dumpy series with that wonderful retro look.

Whisky Ramblings Via Video #66

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries the Auchentoshan Select. It was one the Lowland distillery’s NAS expressions. Bottled for the first time in the early 90s, it moved to the duty free range in 2008, but is no longer being produced as of 2012. It has been replaced with the Springwood & Heartwood. But Mark will try an old bottling, from 1994, for the Italian market. This is still a very nice, albeit undemanding, summer dram.
