Whisky Wednesday Reviews Macallan Gold – Scotch Whisky News
This week Joe Ellis reviews The Macallan Gold.
This week Joe Ellis reviews The Macallan Gold.
We’ve moved to 855 Harrison (between 4th and 5th in SoMa)
Come by and check out our new shop a few blocks north of our previous venue. We could not be more excited about the location, access and parking, and a vast amount of additional space that was badly needed. Whether shopping on the floor or picking up your will calls we think you’ll like this new spot as much we do.
Over the next several weeks we’re continuing to add the finishing touches, set up the tasting bar, install additional signage inside and out, and bring over some additional wines we have coming in. Additionally, we have hundreds of temperature controlled storage lockers on site that are wrapping up construction. Those will be available soon – stay tuned for an upcoming announcement and rental rates.

www.ralfy.com heads a few miles south of Dublin to meet Saint Kevin with Whisky Review 560 – Glendalough Double Barrel whiskey @ 42%vol:

Bunnahabhain 22 Year Old 1991 vintage Islay single malt Scotch whiskey. Single cask hogshead #10853 bottled September 2014 by Hunter Laing & Co. for the Old & Rare Platimum Selection. 239 bottles.
This light golden coloured whisky has a mellow sweet nose of sultanas, raisins, bakewell tarts and vanilla toffee with just a trace of peat. It is rich and creamy smooth on the palate, sweet initially with honeycomb then bitter almonds and a whiff of peat smoke. The finish is long and dry with an oaky, smoky aftertaste.
Bunnahabhain Distillery was established in 1881 on the north eastern tip of the Isle of Islay by the shore of Bunnahabhain Bay and overlooking the Sound of Islay. All the building materials were transported by puffer and unloaded at the distillery pier. Now tucked away at the end of the single track ‘main’ road with spectacular scenery all the way. Bunnahabhain Distillery is equipped with four huge pear shaped stills and produces Scottish malt whisky which is released in blends and single malts. Visitors are welcomed at the distillery visitor centre and distillery cottages are available for holiday lets. A participant in Feis Ile, the annual Islay Festival of Malt and Music.
THE PLOUGH REVEALS EXTENSIVE WHISKY LIST AHEAD OF ’NEXT DOOR AT THE PLOUGH’ LAUNCH
The Plough in Harborne has revealed an extensive new whisky menu ahead of the launch of ’Next Door at The Plough’ which will see the arrival of a dedicated whisky bar. The £750k project will see the popular neighbourhood pub on Harborne High Street add a new first floor extension which will be home to two new private dining and meeting rooms whilst extending its ground floor by 40 covers.
The new menu which will launch mid-November to coincide with the opening of ‘Next Door at The Plough’ takes in over 100 whiskies. The new list builds on The Plough’s already impressive whisky offering with 22 variations from the USA, 13 from Japan, 40 Scotch whiskies and 24 new world whiskies. Additions to the list include Smogen the Sherry Project, hand crafted in a young, independent distillery in Sweden and The Oamaruvian 16 year 1999 Double Wood which takes its moniker from the fact it has been aged for six years in American ex-bourbon casks and ten years in red wine casks. Another highlight on the list is the Redemption Rye Barrel Proof which has been matured for 6 years and bottled at barrel proof in the USA.
Adam Johnson, Director at The Plough, said, “We get really excited about showcasing lesser known whiskies and ales whilst encouraging people to try something new at The Plough. The launch of ‘Next Door’ has given us a platform from which to enhance The Plough experience whilst allowing us to develop our menu and product range even further. The new menus will complement our existing drinks range which takes in an array of hand-crafted spirits, including artisan vodkas and rums, to name a few.”
Whisky prices on the list start from £3.30 and go up to £22.

BALLANTINE’S LAUNCHES FIRST 21 YEAR OLD SIGNATURE OAK EDITION EXCLUSIVE TO GLOBAL TRAVEL RETAIL
Ballantine’s, the No.2 Scotch whisky in the world, has unveiled Ballantine’s 21 Year Old Signature Oak Edition – European Oak, the first of two new limited editions exclusive to Global Travel Retail. The release of an additional Signature Edition created with American oak will follow to complete the special pair of bottlings, making each a collector’s item for whisky enthusiasts.
The Signature Oak Edition – European Oak has been skilfully crafted by Ballantine’s Master Blender Sandy Hyslop and showcases the characteristics and flavours that European oak contributes to the original 21 Year Old blend.
Ensuring this newest expression stays true to the award-winning taste profile of Ballantine’s 21 Year Old, selected whiskies have been matured in quality sherry casks of European oak. Larger than American oak casks, these vessels help to deliver a unique flavour due to their effect on the ageing process.
Ballantine’s Master Blender Sandy Hyslop commented: “I nose each and every cask to ensure a balance between the liquid and the wood, something George Ballantine – a pioneer in the art of maturing whisky in quality casks – would have approved of. With the Ballantine’s 21 Year Old Signature Oak Editions, I wanted to pay tribute to our founder and release expressions that demonstrate to consumers how cask maturation and oak influence transform our whisky. Providing a rich taste profile, the European oak has enhanced the notes of raisin, fruitcake, sherry and spice within the 21 Year Old blend so I am certain that it will become a must-have addition to the cabinet of selective whisky collectors.”
Peter Moore, Global Brand Director for Ballantine’s, added: “The Signature Oak Editions will engage consumers with an interesting journey across different types of cask maturation. Supporting the launch of the Ballantine’s 21 Year Old Signature Oak Edition – European Oak, our Global Travel Retail displays will highlight different elements that consumers can relate to. We will focus on colour, taste and smell to showcase how European oak casks produce a very specific effect on our selected malts, enhancing the quality and personality of our whisky.
“Consumers purchasing through Global Travel Retail are looking for innovation and uniqueness beyond what they can buy in domestic markets. I’m confident that Ballantine’s fans and whisky connoisseurs alike will enjoy the Ballantine’s 21 Year Old Signature Oak Edition – European Oak and look forward to our next launch to complete this special collectors’ set.”
Available in Global Travel Retail, the Ballantine’s 21 Year Old Signature Oak Edition – European Oak is bottled at 40% ABV and available to purchase at an RRP of $225 USD. The release of the Signature Oak Editions builds on the success of the Ballantine’s 17 Year Old Signature Distillery Editions, launched in 2012, which paid tribute to four key signature malts in the 17 Year Old blend and the distilleries that produce them.

Sweet vanilla aromas with beeswax polish, green apple, pear and a touch of lime. Intially grapefruit, mango and banana flavours, complemented by a milk chocolate finish.
Glenlochy Distillery was established at Inverlochy on the north-eastern side of Fort William in 1898 with a railway siding connecting to the newly opened Fort William railway line. Glenlochy Distillery obtained its water from the slopes of Scotland’s highest mountain. The only official release of Glenlochy single malt whisky was in Diageo’s Rare Malts range. Closed in 1983 and dismantled in 1986 however a number of Glenlochy Distillery buildings are still standing having been converted to private accommodation.
