Announcing Tamdhu 50 Year Old, Celebrating Tamdhu’s 120th Anniversary! – Scotch Whisky News

Tamdhu Marks Anniversary with 50 Year Old  Release

Tamdhu Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky has unveiled its oldest ever bottling – Tamdhu 50 Year Old – to coincide with the distillery’s 120th anniversary.

Matured in a first-fill European Oak Sherry Butt for five decades, just 100 bottles of Tamdhu 50 Year Old will be made available globally. This single cask release will retail at $20,000 per bottle.

This rare whisky is presented in an exquisitely-designed decanter, created by a team of traditional British craftsmen and women including glass designer Katy Holford, crystal experts Royal Brierley, and the silversmiths at renowned jewellers Hamilton & Inches.

“What makes this whisky really special to us is that it represents the rebirth of the distillery. There was a time, before we bought and reopened Tamdhu, when some thought it was gone forever. This cask, which may never have been released had the distillery remained closed, can be now enjoyed and savoured, and that is something we want to celebrate.” ~ Leonard Russell, Managing Director of Ian Macelod Distillers, who owns Tamdhu

A first for Speyside as whisky caching offers liquid treasures to Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival goers – Scotch Whisky News

SOSWF Whisky Galore Small

Chart your way to Speyside for a whisky caching experience, in what is a Festival first – and possibly a UK first, offering routes on which secret drams can be discovered.

A first for Speyside as whisky caching offers liquid treasures to Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival goers

Treasure seekers will be hunting out secret stashes of the amber nectar during the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival as the five-day whisky celebration offers its own take on the worldwide craze for geocaching for the very first time.

In a dramtastic twist, the popular outdoor pursuit comes to the Festival and will reflect the global obsession with geocaching, often referred to as a modern-day treasure hunt.

A trail of three caches is being set out by Angels’ Nectar Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, which will provide an initial 200ml bottle, perfect for sharing, in each location. Thereafter whisky cachers are asked to replace the dram they take with a miniature of their choice to be discovered and enjoyed by the next cacher.

Festival chairman James Campbell says, “We are always keen to add new and dynamic offerings that will appeal to our visitors who travel from all over the world to enjoy the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival.

“There’s huge interest in geocaching and we expect the same to be true for whisky caching which is being offered for the first time this year. It is certainly something different and an attraction that we expect will generate considerable curiosity, as we suspect this could be the first dedicated whisky cache trail in the UK, and one which will only be in operation during the Festival.

“What could be better than the chance to explore the great outdoors, soaking up the beauty of Speyside with the prospect of discovering a hidden dram along the way? These may be secret routes, but they will follow picturesque paths, be relatively easy for people of all abilities to enjoy and of course have the lure of discovering a special dram.”

Sometimes referred to as a high-tech treasure hunt, geocaching has become a global phenomenon and there are more than 2 million geocaches worldwide. It is done in towns, cities and rural locations with geocachers using a GPS device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers called caches which contain a logbook with a pen or pencil.

Geocaching appeals to all kinds of people, including those who enjoy technology, competitive people seeking to be the first to find the cache; and older people who want to add a different aspect to enjoy the great outdoors.

Speyside’s whisky version does not require GPS, as clues to guide the route to the cache will be issued on registration, but outdoor footwear and sensible outer clothing are required. As well as recording the visit in a logbook, participants are asked to share their experience, and tasting notes, on social media.

Whisky caching will be offered daily throughout the Festival and participation is free and tickets can be reserved on the Festival website. Once registered the first ‘clues’ will be given out.

It’s one of almost 500 events that make up this year’s Festival programme which takes place from April 27 to May 1.  It includes everything from tours and tastings to heritage walks, whisky and food pairings, river canoe trips, ceilidhs and crafts workshops, all celebrating Speyside’s most famous product.

Based in the heart of Scotland’s malt whisky country – home to more than half of all of Scotland’s distilleries – Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival has events from Kingussie in the south to Forres in the west and Buckie in the east.

Situated directly between the cities of Aberdeen and Inverness, Speyside is the base for many high-profile international brands.

More information about the event is available at http://www.spiritofspeyside.com/ and tickets are also available to buy on the website. The Festival is active on social media – facebook.com/WhiskyFestival and @spirit_speyside on Twitter and Instagram. Use the hashtag #dram17.

Global Whisky Auctions 3rd Auction Live in April – Whisky News

Global Whisky Auction

With our second auction finished, in which we had some frantic and phrenetic bidding thanks to buyers from all over the globe, we now look forward to the April auction with anticipation. However, we will look back on the wonderful, collectable bottles that compelled many keen bidders to part with some hard-earned cash and buy their bottles of choice in the March Global Whisky Auction.

First up was the Macallan 1979 Gran Reserva which is the first and considered the best of the three Gran Reserva releases, this bottle achieved a hammer price of £1400 and is now winging its way to France for the lucky winner of the lot.

We had a couple of bottles from the highly collectable and drinkable closed distillery, Port Ellen. First up was the third bottling from the Diageo Annual Releases from the distillery, which sold for £950. Another bottling from this much-missed distillery was an independently bottled release from Hunter Laing, this being a 35-year-old 1978 vintage that settled on a hammer price of £800.

Another closed distillery bottling, which also made a good return for its seller, was from the Highland distillery Brora. This bottle came from the Rare Malts Selection series and was a 24-year-old distilled in 1977 and sold for £650.

So onward we go to the April auction and already we have some great bottles to pique your interest. Firstly, a couple of bottles from the Orkney Isles are also represented in our third auction, with two whiskies from Highland Park. The first being the 1978 distillation from the Vintage Collection (lot 388) which was only available to buy from travel retail outlets and the second the limited release 1967 Vintage (lot 411).

A couple of bottles from the south coast of the Island of Islay are also ready to go in our next auction. We have the 2016 release of Lagavulin 25-year-old which marked the 200th anniversary of the distillery with a limited-edition release. This bottling was a recognition of the contribution the Lagavulin distillery managers have made in crafting Lagavulin across the years. We also have a limited-edition release from Ardbeg. This whisky was distilled in 1977 and was released in small batches in the early 2000’s perfect for drinking or collecting.

Already we have some wonderful bottles lined up, but there is still time to enter your bottle or a collection of bottles into the April auction. For further details on how to enter your bottles into the auction, please contact info@globalwhiskyauctions.com or call 0141 248 7283.

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Johnnie Walker Blue – Scotch Whisky News

phil

Well, well, well. It’s come to the time where we review and shine light on one of the most talked about bottles of whisky on the planet, Johnnie Walker Blue Label. From the outset I will say one thing, this whisky does deserve respect. Whether or not you like blends or the brand itself, something that is crafted to this degree for consistency is genuinely remarkable. Only around 16 whiskies, both grain and malt go into making this fine and prestige product, some of my favorite’s among them are; Royal Lochnagar, Mortlach, Talisker, Caol Ila, Clynelish, Dailuaine, Cambus,  etc. etc. This is certainly something that all whisky drinkers should try at some point in their lives, the price and experience is the tricky part. Enjoy!

Oban: West Coast Whisky Feis – Scotch Whisky News

Oban: West Coast Whisky Feis

A new whisky festival to be held in Oban, written by Paul McLean of MCLEANSCOTLAND

Gather your strength and gather your pennies … there will be a superb new whisky festival in Oban this July, we will be there and it would nice to see as many friends as possible, to support this new festival.  So where? When? What? And Who?

Where? My hometown, Oban, gateway to the isles and the capital of seafood in Scotland.  It’s only a few hundred yards from Oban Distillery, where you are surrounded by great pubs, food outlets, shops and of course – accommodation, our advice, stay the night, or like Liz and myself, make it a weekend! Just over the water on Mull is another distillery; Tobermory, with an excellent pub within spittin’ distance, owned by a pal of ours, Macgochans Bar.

When? From 12pm – 6pm on Saturday, 22 July, at Oban’s Skipinnish Cèilidh House.

What?  West Coast Whisky Feis, the brainchild of local drinks retailer, Oban Whisky and Fine Wines, good pals of ours by the way (I think everyone in the drinks industry are friends!).  Skipinnish Ceilidh House will host a range of exhibits from west coast distilleries and food stalls highlighting local producers.

And who? Scotland’s west coast distillers. Distilleries such as Isle of Arran, Caol Ila and Ben Nevis. The local Diageo-owned Oban Distillery will also hold on-site master classes a couple of hundred yards away, based around their world famous whiskies.

Euan Finlayson, owner of Oban Whisky and Fine Wines, said, “We wanted to create an event that shows off the incredible whiskies that the west coast has to offer. The aim is to offer a range of whiskies and master classes that can appeal to newcomers and aficionados alike.”

Ticket holders will receive a dram glass and will be able to take samples from all of the exhibitors. There will also be a nosing competition where attendees can attempt to identify various whiskies by smell alone, with a bottle of single malt whisky up for grabs. Samples are included in the event ticket price and master classes are available for an additional fee. Tickets cost £30, available; www.westcoastwhiskyfeis.co.uk/ – the official website, go and soak up the aromas of this new dramfest. The good news just got better, they are offering subsidised UK & worldwide shipping from the Fèis shop within the venue, so no need to be stuck carrying bottles around with you when the shows over.  www.whiskyfix.com/  Whisky Fix is a company specialising in single malt scotch whisky, for whisky lovers, connoisseurs and collectors alike. Working closely with distillery partners to offer very rare and collectable whisky along with your everyday whisky needs. So if you have been looking for a certain bottle to complete that collection, get in touch, you never know.

For any help with this new fest or interested in whisky tours around Scotland and Ireland,

ask Paul and Liz; info@mcleanscotland.com  We can certainly assist with add on dates before/after this event.
