Pinhook 2018 Bourbon release

Each fall, Pinhook releases a new bourbon connected to a promising young thoroughbred horse. The whiskey in each release is the best expression of their barrels at that moment in time. They blend and proof each release to be as unique as the horse on the label. The result is an annual vintage of Pinhook Bourbon that become instant collectibles. While it is impossible to know if the horse on the bottle will go all the way to the Kentucky Derby, there is no gamble on the quality of what’s inside. “Bourbon Country” is the 8th release. It’s been aged more than 3 years at Castle and Key Distillery in Millville, KY . Notes: A vibrant burst of ripe pear and baked apricot up front seamlessly give way to toffee, dates, and vanilla bean. A lingering and lifting finish of cinnamon, cedar, and peppercorn round out this complex, and exceptionally balanced expression.

PRICE: $55/btl

Boone County Distilling Co. 12 Year Old

“Boone County, once the largest producer of bourbon in Kentucky, has resurrected local distilling under the name Boone County Distilling Company and the launch of “Eighteen 33″- a 12 year-old straight bourbon whiskey. It has been profiled as rich and full bodied in the mouth with an almost everlasting finish, notes of aged oak, vanilla, caramel, and a hint of cinnamon.”

Corsair Ryemageddon

Corsair Ryemageddon American Rye Whiskey is distilled from a mash of 80% malted rye grains and 20% chocolate rye grains. After the grains have been harvested by local farmers, they are mashed and fermented before being twice distilled, first through an antique wash still and then again through a 240-gallon copper-pot still. It has an aroma of milk chocolate and peanut butter, along with notes of fresh rye toast, baking spices and buttered bread on the palate. The flavors lead gently to a warming finish with a touch of fruit, butter and vanilla.

PRICE: $53/btl

Westward American Single Malt Whiskey to Join Distill Ventures Portfolio – American Whiskey News

Westward American Single Malt Whiskey to Join Distill Ventures Portfolio

Award-winning leader in rapidly growing American single malt whiskey category joins with Diageo-backed accelerator, Distill Ventures

Westward Whisky

Westward American Single Malt is a celebration of the American pioneer spirit, inspired by the best of the American craft beer and whiskey traditions. Brewed and distilled using locally malted Pacific Northwest barley and ale yeast, perfected by years of maturation at the distillery’s rack house, and mingled in small batches, Westward is the culmination of a quest to produce a whiskey that embodies the spirit of the Pacific Northwest and draws inspiration from Oregon’s deeply-rooted craft brewing culture.

Founder Christian Krogstad began distilling American single malt whiskey when he founded House Spirits Distillery nearly 15 years ago. A promising North American whiskey category, American single malts grew 131% from 2014-2017, according to IWSR.  In 2015, under the direction of CEO and Co-Owner Thomas Mooney, Westward became the largest independent distiller of American single malt whiskey when it built its new Portland, Oregon distillery. On a typical day, the distillery team brews 3,000 gallons of pale ale whiskey wash, which is double-pot distilled to produce enough whiskey to fill five to six new barrels of Westward American Single Malt whiskey.

The investment by Diageo through Distill Ventures includes both the current distillery in Portland and the Westward American Single Malt brand and inventory. Enabling capacity expansion of nearly 40 percent next year, the investment will allow the Westward brand to continue to meet growing demand using only whiskey that is produced from scratch at its Portland facility, as it has done from the start.

Founded in London in 2013, Distill Ventures is the world’s first accelerator dedicated to spirits, with the mission to support entrepreneurs on their quest to establishing and scaling brands for future generations of consumers. The company is active in both traditional spirits categories and emerging drinks categories across Europe, Asia and, for the past two years, North America.  As is customary with all companies that work with Distill Ventures, the founders and current investors of Westward whiskey will retain majority ownership and continue to run the business independently as the company continues to expand and introduce the brand to a broader global audience.

Thomas Mooney, CEO and Co-Owner of Westward American Single Malt whiskey, said: “We are thrilled to bring our Westward American Single Malt whiskey into the Distill Ventures family, an exciting and logical next step as we expand our brand across the United States and into export markets around the world. This strategic partnership with Distill Ventures and Diageo brings deep production expertise, an enhanced route to market, and the capital that we need to realize the full potential of our Westward American Single Malt whiskey program.”

Gonzalo de la Pezuela, Managing Director, Distill Ventures North America added “The Distill Ventures model offers the best entrepreneurs the opportunity to scale and grow their businesses independently with specialized acceleration resources on a global basis.  Our team is deeply committed to working with strong founders like Westward’s Thomas Mooney and Christian Krogstad, who deliver on innovation and excel at brand building.  Westward American Single Malt whiskey is an unparalleled spirit that perfectly delivers on the vision of placing a US brand amongst the world’s most coveted single malts.

Eugene Khabensky, Ventures Director, Diageo, said: “As a global spirits leader, we are thrilled when a high quality brand like Westward joins the Distill Ventures family. As a company built from founder-led brands, we are excited to support two great new entrepreneurs, Thomas Mooney and Christian Krogstad, as they accelerate Westward to the next level. We believe this brand has the potential to thrive in the emerging American Single Malt whiskey category.”

The Macallan 12 Year Old Sherry Oak 2018

This is the modern interpretation of the Macallan style for which the distillery is so well known – refined, rich, and rounded with plenty of sherry cask influence. Very definitely a dram to be enjoyed with friends. Fresh fruit salad and cloves on the nose, dark fruits, Christmas cake and rich almonds emerging in the palate, before stewed apples and sweet prunes in the finish.

Canada Distils

a new book from

CWN1

After what seems an eternity of planning, traveling from coast to coast, and writing, Blair Phillips and I are overjoyed that our forthcoming book, called Canada Distils, will be published on the Appetite by Random House imprint of Penguin Random House Canada. Thank you to everyone who has helped and hosted us in our travels so far. We’re not done yet, so don’t be surprised if we call or drop by looking for information.

The book profiles of all of Canada’s operating distilleries, large and small, along with little-known details for visitors and armchair visitors alike. There is so much more between the pages, but you’ll just have to be patient to find out what.

The Strath / Shelter Point exclusives

Two new Shelter Point whiskies, both exclusive to The Strath liquor store in Victoria are well worth hunting down. Shelter Point is really coming into its own and The Strath has picked two of its honeyest honey barrels to release as single-cask whiskies. A Classic Single Malt distilled in 2011 and an Avant-Garde Barley from 2013 are both bottled at 57.3%.

Look for typical lush malty notes in the Classic, underscored by baking spices, citrus fruit and fresh bread. Avant-Garde Barley matured in a Vancouver Island blackberry wine barrel, bursts with jammy fruit, toasted grain and citrus hints.

CWN5

Yukon’s Two Brewers

Meanwhile, in Whitehorse, Two Brewers continue to impress with their latest whiskies including Release 10, their first cask-strength whisky to date. Bottled at 58%, its grassy notes, sweet tobacco and cereals bask in a gentle bed of Werther’s caramel.

A Pedro Ximinez finish adds sweetness and ripe fruity tones to Release 9, which is bottled at 46%.

CWN6

Canadian Rockies 17 Year Old

All the excitement about the recently released Canadian Rockies 21 may have overshadowed another real gem of a whisky. Sourced from Highwood Distillers in Alberta, Canadian Rockies 17 year old is one more example of the glories of slow maturation. Canadian Rockies 17, bottled at 50% abv, delivers all the spiciness, luscious corn and crisp clean woody notes we’ve come to expect in well-aged corn whisky.

CWN7
