New Gordon & MacPhail whiskies – exclusive to The Whisky Exchange

December has arrived, and with it a new pair of whiskies exclusively available at The Whisky Exchange. Bottled for us by Gordon & MacPhail as part of the Connoisseurs Choice range, we’re proud to introduce our Glenlivet 2003 and Glenturret 2004.

Gordon & MacPhail

Founded in 1895, Gordon & MacPhail started as grocer in Elgin in the heart of Speyside – the shop is still open at 58-60 South Street. John Urquhart joined the business shortly after and worked with James Gordon as a buyer, including purchasing whisky from the local distilleries. However, both James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail passed away, and in 1915, John Urquhart took over as senior partner. His familly still runs the company more than a hundred years later, with the fourth generation now in charge.

Connoisseurs Choice

We went for a pair of whiskies, bottled at cask strength as part of the Connoisseurs Choice range. A famous whisky label, it launched in 1968 and is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year – we’ve just squeaked in under the wire to join in the celebrations.

Connoisseurs Choice is a range of single malts drawn from the extensive G&M warehouses – the family have been working with distillers for more than 100 years, and have picked some impressive casks over the years.

Earlier this year, G&M revamped the entire range in honour of the anniversary, and these are our first exclusive whiskies in the shiny new livery.

TWE1

Glenlivet 2003, 15 Years Old

The first of our new pair of exclusive whiskies, this was aged in a single refill bourbon barrel. We like our Glenlivet to taste of Glenlivet, and this definitely does that:

Buy now >

Nose: Apple Danish pastries and Portuguese custard tarts. Grapefruit and orange peel develop, with tangy touches and soft spice. The spice becomes bready, with whipped cream and a dusting of icing sugar. A decadent breakfast.

Palate: Juicy fruit and spice explodes across the palate. Sweet pineapple and pear are joined by sharp cinnamon-spiced apples and singed tart-tatin pastry. There’s a hint of liquorice and barrel char underneath, with wax-polished oak pushing through the middle.

Finish: Polished oak and meadow flowers fade to leave digestive biscuits and a pinch of anise.

Comment: An excellently fruity Glenlivet, with soft creaminess and just the right amount of spice.

TWE2

Glenturret 2004, 14 Years Old

Glenturret has a fairly solid claim to being Scotland’s oldest distillery, even if it has spent a good few decades closed since distilling started in 1775. This second exclusive pick is very much the opposite of the Glenlivet, and was matured in a pretty active refill sherry hogshead. It’s not as much of a sherry bomb as some of our recent exclusives (including a super-sherried Glenlivet 2007) but is still packed with dried fruit and spice.

Buy now >

Nose: New leather, Eccles cakes and stewed prunes. Buttery pastry disappears under an onslaught of fruit, with baked apples, dates and figs piling on. Candied notes develop – aniseed twists and blackcurrant boiled sweets. Hiding at the back are darker notes of tar and barrel char.

Palate: Rich and thick. Raisins, fresh plums and prunes lead to a pool of cherry and berry jam. The sweetness starts to diminish as dark chocolate and a hint of liquorice roll in. Rich at the back, raisin jam and charred oak are joined by cinder toffee and a hint of tar.

Finish: Boiled sweets and real Maraschino cherries linger.

Comment: Big and bold, but not all consuming – look behind the sherry cask fruit and there’s still Glenturret at the core.

These two exclusive releases are available now from The Whisky Exchange website – Glenlivet 2003 Connoisseurs Choice and Glenturret 2004 Connoisseurs Choice.

Whisky for Christmas with Isle of Raasay Distillery – Scotch Whisky News

raasay-while-we-wait-2018-release

Raasay While We Wait 2018- £53

Raasay Distillery has now launched Raasay While We Wait 2018 – the fourth expression to date of the brand’s independently bottled single malt – which was created as a representation of the flavours that drinkers can expect from future Raasay scotch whisky. The release of Raasay While We Wait 2018 begins the countdown to 2020 when the first ever Raasay single malt in Scotch whisky history will be released.Designed as a peaty and fruity single malt, each iteration of Raasay While We Wait has been crafted through the vatting of two malts from a single Highland distillery – heavily peated at 45ppm and unpeated – matured in bourbon barrels and finished in Tuscan Montechiari wine casks. The team at Raasay Distillery are keen to push the boundaries of the spirit, exploring the effect that different finishing times and casks have on the flavour profile of the spirit.

 tweeddale-grain-of-truth

The Tweeddale: Grain of Truth – £50

Heritage brand The Tweeddale has now added a new single grain whisky to its repertoire – Grain of Truth. The Tweeddale was first blended in 1820 in Coldstream in the Scottish Borders, and later continued by Richard Day from 1895 to 1940. In 2009 Alasdair Day – great-grandson of Richard Day – decided to recreate The Tweeddale and to continue Richard Day’s eminent legacy. Grain of Truth represents Alasdair Day’s latest effort to create a memorable, rich and complex single grain whisky, based on traditional Victorian craftsmanship with innovative maturation techniques. Grain of Truth possesses an uncommon composition of 50% wheat and 50% malted barley. The spirit was matured in bourbon barrels and finished for nine months in fine Oloroso sherry hogsheads imbuing the whisky with rich and warming honey and orange notes on the nose. This evolves into touches of dark chocolate and cognac on the palate, which is balanced by Oloroso, orange and dark chocolate notes, with a dry and spicy finish. Grain of Truth is delicious neat, on the rocks or with a mixer.

Berry’s 25 Year KWM Single Barrel Blend – Our first exclusive cask of Blended Scotch Whisky, bottled for our 25th Anniversary. Andrew sampled 6 different single casks of 25 year old Blended Scotch Whisky in May of 2016. The whiskies had been blended, put back into barrels to marry, and then forgotten. Andrew selected cask number 46572 to be bottled exclusively for KWM, as a 25th Anniversary bottling. The whisky was acquired by Berry Bros. & Rudd in barrel, and beyond the age, the contents remain a mystery… Bottled at 46%. Just 222 bottles. – Regular: $200+gst – Save 25% – Now: $149.99+gst (only 9 left)

Cadenhead Dailuaine 2004 KWM Cask – Our 1st ever KWM exclusive single cask of Dailuaine and our 2nd cask from WM Cadenhead. The whisky has been bottled at 55.9% after maturing 12 years in a very active Refill Hogshead. This whisky was featured on Day 1 of our 2017 Whisky Advent Calendar. – Regular: $120+gst – Save 20% – Now: $95.99+gst

Cadenhead Glen Moray 1992 KWM Cask – One of the most exciting 25th Anniversary releases we’ve received… the whisky is both 25 years old, and distilled in 1992, the year we opened. The whisky was matured in a refill American oak hogshead, bottled at 51.1%. The cask yielded 246 bottles, only available at Kensington Wine Market! – Regular: $205+gst – Save 20% – Now: $163.99+gst

Cadenhead Small Batch Speyside 1991 – Only 18 bottles of this old single malt are coming to Canada, exclusively to KWM. The whisky is from the Speyside Distillery, which now goes by the name Spey, to avoid being confused with the Speyside Region. The whisky is the product of 2 Bourbon Hogsheads bottled at 50.5% after 24 years. – Regular: $230+gst – Save 25% – Now: $172.49+gst (Only 4 left!)

Cooper’s Choice Ardmore 2001 – 30 bottles of this 16 year old cask strength Ardmore are coming to Alberta, exclusively to KWM. Bottled at 51.5% after maturing in an Ex-Bourbon cask. – Regular: $145+gst – Save 25% – Now: $108.74+gst

Cooper’s Choice Skara Brae –  A mystery Orcadian malt with gentle peat, wonder which distillery it is from? The Cooper’s Choice Skara Brae is exclusive to KWM, bottled at 46% after maturing 12 years in a Bourbon cask. We think it is Highland Park, but that is speculation… Skara Brae is the name given to an ancient archeological site on the Orkney mainland, famous for the 8 stone dwellings found there which date back to before 3000 BCE. – Regular: $110+gst – Save 25% – Now: $82.49+gst

Brora Distillery’s copper stills gently reawakened after 35 years of rest – Scotch Whisky News

Brora Distillery’s copper stills gently reawakened after 35 years of rest

In October 2017 we announced a major investment to revive two iconic “lost” distilleries, Brora and Port Ellen. Just over a year later the copper stills from the Brora distillery have been transported for refurbishment.

The beautiful copper pot stills of the Brora distillery, which have lain at rest since the distillery closed its doors in 1983, have begun the first stage of a journey that will see them once again making the finest single malt Scotch whisky.

Copper stills are the beating heart of any distillery and the original stills will once more be the centrepiece of the Brora Distillery as it is brought back into production over the next two years.

The pair of stills were carefully removed from the distillery before being transported 200 miles to Diageo Abercrombie coppersmiths in Alloa where they will be meticulously refurbished by highly skilled coppersmiths.

Brora stills being transported for refurbishment

Diageo Abercrombie has the richest heritage of crafting copper stills in the industry, with over two centuries of history dating back to 1790. Today the coppersmiths combine the age-old craft skills with modern technology to produce the highest quality handcraft engineering.

Although in good condition the stills require refurbishment to prepare them to return to fulltime distillation. The team at Abercrombie will refurbish Brora’s stills by hand and prepare them to once again produce the outstanding liquid that has made the distillery’s Scotch world famous.

Senior Chargehand Coppersmith Jim McEwan, who oversaw the moving of the stills, said:

“Abercrombie coppersmiths last worked on these very same stills in the early 1980s before the distillery closed its doors, so it’s a great priviledge for us to work on them now and to get them ready to produce spirit again.

“They are beautiful stills and they are actually in really good condition, but after 35 years of rest they do need a bit of loving care to get them ready to distill again. It will be a real pleasure to work on these stills.”

Stewart Bowman, Brora Distillery Project Implementation Manager, said:

“This is another important milestone in our journey to bring Brora Distillery back to life.

“Work is now well underway to meticulously restore the distillery buildings back to their former glory, and it is quite an emotional moment to see the stills beginning their journey back to fulltime spirit production.”

The restoration of Brora Distillery is part of a £35million investment programme that will also see the iconic Port Ellen Distillery on Islay brought back into production.

Diageo sells portfolio of brands to Sazerac

Diageo has agreed the sale of nineteen brands in an agreement with Sazerac for an aggregate consideration of $550 million. The net proceeds of approximately £340 million, after tax and transaction costs, will be returned to shareholders through a share repurchase following completion, which will be incremental to the previously announced programme of up to £2bn. The transaction, which is subject to regulatory approval, is expected to complete early in 2019.

Ivan Menezes, Chief Executive of Diageo, said: “Diageo has a clear strategy to deliver consistent efficient growth and value creation for our shareholders. This includes a disciplined approach to allocating resources and capital to ensure we maximise returns over time. Today’s announcement is another example of this strategy in action. The disposal of these brands enables us to have even greater focus on the faster growing premium and above brands in the US spirits portfolio.”

Further Information

  • The brands included in the transaction are Seagram’s VO, Seagram’s 83, Seagram’s Five Star, Myers’s, Parrot Bay, Romana Sambuca, Popov, Yukon Jack, Goldschlager, Stirrings, The Club, Scoresby, Black Haus, Peligroso, Relska, Grind, Piehole, Booth’s and John Begg.
  • The transaction is approximately 1.9 pence per share dilutive to pre-exceptional eps in the first full financial year.
  • The transaction is expected to generate an exceptional gain on disposal of approximately £110m.
  • Diageo has also agreed to enter into long-term supply contracts with Sazerac on completion for five of the brands each for a period of ten years. Supply of all other brands will transition to Sazerac within a one year period from completion.
  • Further details with respect to the execution of the additional share repurchase will be made available following completion of the transaction and aligned with the execution of the remaining tranches of the previously announced programme of up to £2bn.

Diageo makes progress to close gender pay gap; announces STEM scholarships for female students – Scotch Whisky News

  • Diageo Great Britain median pay gap of -12.6% (2017: -9.8%)
  • Diageo Scotland median pay gap of +18.0% (2017: +16.7%)

Today, Diageo publishes its second Gender Pay Gap Report showing an improvement in the median pay gap to +5.4% (2017: +8.6%) for Diageo employees across all legal entities in Great Britain and Scotland. The mean pay gap also improved this year across these businesses to -3.5% (2017: +0.6%).

We know that achieving our ambition of closing the gap will take time. We have made good progress against the initiatives we outlined in 2017 and have introduced new initiatives to support change in our business.

We have announced the creation of two new scholarships in partnership with Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. The Diageo Scholarships aim to encourage more female students into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers and provide a pipeline of talent for the future in areas specifically related to our business.

1. Diageo’s combined gender pay figure includes all employees across all legal entities in England, Scotland and Wales.

“We aim to be the best employer for women in the UK and are actively working to ensure we have a strong pipeline of female talent, across the broad variety of roles in our business. While there is more work to do, we are proud that our work on inclusion and diversity is making Diageo a stronger company and I am pleased with the progress we have made this year towards closing the gender pay gap across our combined businesses in Great Britain and Scotland.”
