Glenmorangie 18 Year Old

Glenmorangie 18 Years Old is a single malt Scotch whisky of serious distinction. Once it has spent fifteen years maturing in American white oak casks approximately 30% is transferred into Spanish Oloroso casks to spend a further three years maturing. Then, when both elements have reached 18 years, they are blended back together to create a whisky with a rich bouquet and full, rounded flavour. A living legacy, rare in its complexity, yet perfectly balanced. Rich and rounded with sweet dried fruits and a complex, floral fragrance. A balanced flavour between honey and malt with a subtle hint of wood smoke, moving on to a tantalising finish, with sweet dried fruits and a subtle dryness from the Oloroso influence.

GLENMORANGIE ALLTA PRIVATE EDITION (10TH ANNIVERSARY)

The 10th relese in Glenmorangie’s award-winning Private Edition series, Allta is the distillery’s first single malt to be created with yeast discovered growing wild on Glenmorangie’s own barley. Taking its name from the Gaelic for wild, Allta (pronounced ‘al-ta’) demonstrates the impact yeast has on the flavour of whisky and is bottled at a strength of 51.2% abv, free from chill-filtration.

The nose has biscuit and yeasty notes with some gentle floral aspects, soft vanilla and sweet orange. The palate has a crisp bite with butter candy, creamy vanilla and orange atop a yeasty note with a touch of mint and sweet chilli. The finish is long and earthy with more orange and peppermint emerging.

Behind the Scenes at The Glengoyne 2020 VIP event – Scotch Whisky News

AA Glengoyne
Glengoyne1

For the first time in the distillery’s 185 year history, we closed our doors on Saturday 16th February to 36 lucky Glengoyne Family members. They had a chance of a lifetime to be involved in our first exclusive Glengoyne Family event – “Behind the Scenes at Glengoyne Distillery“.

It was an all-star cast of Robbie Hughes, John Glass, Stuart Hendry and Gordon Dundas who took guests on a step-by-step journey of the craftsmanship behind our whisky. The day also included sampling whisky straight from the cask and an unforgettable sensory tasting and flavour matching experience, providing an understanding of the distinctive aromas and taste of Glengoyne. The day finished with a delicious whisky banquet and a take home gift of a signed bottle of The Legacy Series: Chapter One.

Glengoyne2

It was such a good day, that’s why we are doing it again in 2020.

We were truly overwhelmed with the feedback from all guests. Everyone felt they got a unique opportunity to get under the skin of Glengoyne and understand its craft in a never before seen way. Thanks to this, we can now confirm that “Behind the Scenes at Glengoyne Distillery” will return on Saturday 29th February 2020.  More information to follow, but we hope to see some more of you there.

Remember you don’t need to wait a year to come and say hello, book your next tour here.

K&L California ~13 Year Old Balbair: An Exceedingly Rare Single Cask, Distillery Bottled Exclusive – Scotch Whisky News

Balblair 1405371x

A Sweet-Spot Single Malt Collectors Will Love
2005 Balblair 13 Year Old “K&L Exclusive” Cask No. 224 Cask Strength Single Cask Highland Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($89.99)

“I was SO excited to hear that Balblair was doing single casks, not only because I typically love their standard offerings, but mostly because we so rarely get anything distillery direct and Balblair at full strength is extremely rare.” —David Othenin-Girard, K&L SoCal Spirits Buyer

Balblair has been quietly crafting some of our favorite Highland malts. Perfectly melding breathtaking complexity with drinkability, Balblair is consistently a go-to brand. The only downside is, rarely do we ever see single cask expressions from them. So when one does come along, it is a reason to rejoice. This 13-year-old expression delights in every way we expected. Citrus notes are joined by accents of honeysuckle, apricot, vanilla, and a subtle wisp of smoke. Perhaps most captivating is how easily approachable it is even at cask strength. Sure, there’s some power here, but everything is so well composed it simply coasts across the palate. If you are a fan of Balblair, this is a must-have bottling, but anyone who enjoys a top-flight Highland malt will be more than pleased with this blockbuster effort.

2005 Balblair 13 Year Old “K&L Exclusive” Cask No. 224 Cask Strength Single Cask Highland Single Malt Whisky 750ml (ships as 1.5L) ($89.99)

The Balblair distillery is still one of the truly unsung heroes of the Highlands. Official record sets the founding in 1790, but illicit distillation was ubiquitous in these far-flung parts of the Highlands long before that. The little distillery just a stone’s throw from Glenmorangie offers some of the prettiest malt in Scotland. The water source, Allt Dearg, has slight peaty character which, although not overtly detectable in the whisky, serves to add complexity to the already layered malt coming from these small stills in Edderton. When the brand approached us with an opportunity to select casks directly we jumped at the opportunity. What really intrigues us about distillery bottlings is the potential to get the highest quality first fill barrels at full cask strength. Like all of Scotland’s distilleries, stocks are relatively tight at Balblair, but they understand that in order to win hearts and minds they need to offer something unique. Long ago the management decided to focus on vintage releases, much like Glenrothes in Speyside. Most distillers are not prepared to augment their production plan to accommodate a few geeks in California and we’re very grateful that our friends at Balblair see the value in offering these special whiskies where it really matters, especially considering their extremely limited offerings. We selected this excellent 13-year-old from a first fill bourbon barrel for its balance and unbridled vibrancy. Be sure to add a splash of water to open it up.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 27, 2019

I was SO excited to hear that Balblair was doing single casks, not only because I typically love their standard offerings, but mostly because we so rarely get anything distillery direct and Balblair at full strength is extremely rare. We tasted through a number of samples, but this cask stood out for its wild nose and very appealing profile. It starts with a gorgeous snappy malt, subtle cracked pepper, ripe grain, whispers of gravelly smoke and yellow plums. The palate is bold and full of zip, with powerful orchard fruits. The American oak is so well integrated with the softest, prettiest tannin to balance the rich malt out. With a nice dollop of water the package becomes much much prettier. Tons of citron, musk melon, apricots, and subtle spice aromatics. The palate shows more creamy butterscotch notes balanced by bold Seville orange, dense dried herbal teas and those tiny hints of smoke popping back up. There’s a lot of whisky in this squat little bottle. We can’t wait to see what else they pull out of the warehouse for us this spring.

Andrew Tobin | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 30, 2019

Distilled in 2005, this 13 year Balblair is something to behold. The nose is fruity and welcoming, with notes of orange, apricot, kumquat, and almond that adds a lovely creaminess to the bouquet. On second sniff you get baking spice and a hint of cleaner. The palate is warm and spicy with a slight hint of peat, malt, and a lovely nutty finish. All I can say is that for $90 this is one Scotch that you can’t go wrong with!

Jackson Lee | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 30, 2019

Beautiful to smell, a joy to drink. The nose was perfumed with sweet clementines, strawberries, dried apricot, nougat, blanched almonds and cedar sawdust. I kept going back to the nose between sips, and also when the glass was empty. If they did make this into a perfume, it could spell trouble for whiskey enthusiasts. The palate shared similar sweet citrus notes, combined with honeysuckle and the lightest bit of vanilla. It starts off smooth on the palate but like a hot pepper, you start to feel the burn kick in towards the end and the spice just adds another warming dimension to the dram. The finish left me wanting to start the whole process all over again. A fun and light Scotch that’s perfect for parties and guests (if you like sharing).

Illya Haase | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 29, 2019

I love bourbon. So it’s rare that I find a Scotch that for me hits that “sweet spot.” Enter the Balblair 13 Year Old “K&L Exclusive” Cask No. 224 Cask Strength Single Cask Highland Single Malt Whisky. It has cracked my code. Aromatically, it opens up beautifully with subtle fruit, banana, toffee, and vanilla, and then the scent of light smoke fills the glass. I haven’t even taken a sip yet! Complex, big, and rich, there’s a complex array of wood, fruit, and spice. The finish is long, warm, and has the right amount of cinnamon and barrel char. This is perfect to enjoy while smoking a good cigar in front of an open fire. It’s also perfect to enjoy on a Tuesday night with a frozen pizza from the oven. What I’m saying is that this is THE Scotch that will enhance ANY night!

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 29, 2019

This single malt is 55.6% abv but is easy to drink out of the bottle. But it is still better with a little water because the water opens the Balbair up and gives it a creamy mouth feel. The nose is interesting and complex, with sweet floral and a touch of vanilla and honey notes. In the mouth it is malty and round. It is not heavy and has a beautiful balance.

Will Blakely | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 27, 2019

Balblair has been a consistent favorite of mine among Highland malts for some time. Even the lower-proof distillery bottlings boast impressive quality and feel very much worth the price they command. This cask strength offering delivers some of the best flavor I have had from their line, and for under $100. Creamy toffee envelops banana, pear and apple, belying a persistent, nutty undercurrent. Ample spice compliments the rich sweetness, with nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla vividly framing the dense flavors and adding dimension. The structure here is immaculate, and even with a splash of water, the flavor remains absurdly dense. This is a truly special bottle, and I encourage any fan of classic Highland Scotch to pick up a bottle for themselves and other connoisseurs in their whisky circles.

WINNER **WORLD’S BEST SINGLE CASK SINGLE MALT WHISKY** AGAIN! – Tasmanian Whisky News

SC1

Sullivans Cove French Oak
World’s Best Single Cask Single Malt Whisky

We’ve done it again!

We are thrilled to share the news that we’ve won the award for World’s Best Single Cask Single Malt Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards for the second year running!

This year, a 10-year-old cask of our French Oak, TD0217, was crowned the World’s Best Single Cask Single Malt, announced at the World Whiskies Awards 2019 dinner in London last night. This follows our award for World’s Best Single Cask Single Malt last year, and our award for World’s Best Single Malt in 2014, making Sullivans Cove the only distillery in the world to EVER win World’s Best Single Cask Single Malt twice and bringing our total for World’s Best awards to three overall.

This cask was bottled and sold last year both in 700ml bottles, and in 200ml bottles that were included in our whisky trio packs, so if you have one, you’re now the owner of this year’s World’s Best!

As always, this achievement would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our dedicated team here in Tasmania, and your support, so

Thank you!

The Whisky Exchange “The World Whiskies Awards 2019 – the winners” – Whisky News

TWE1

The 2019 whisky season has officially started: Whisky Live London kicks off today and last night saw the announcement of the winners of the World Whiskies Awards 2019. While we’ve known who won medals for a couple of months, last night’s dinner and ceremony was all about calling out the best of the best – the whiskies that were top in their countries and categories.

The World’s Best Single Malt

The top of the World Whiskies Awards tree is World’s Best Single Malt. Unlike some whisky awards, the WWAs have been embracing the first W of their name since almost the very beginning, with the World’s Best Single Malt bouncing around the world, although Scotland and Japan have very much been the most popular countries. However, this year (if my memory serves) is the first where Ireland has picked up the award – congratulations go to Teeling 24 Year Old Vintage Reserve.

TWE2

The Irish single malts of the first half of the 1990s have been wowing for the last couple of years. At the time, only Bushmills and Cooley were making single malt, and the general opinion is that most of the whiskey that has been appearing these days is from Bushmills, and the tasting notes for the Teeling 24 Year Old suggest it’s from the same pedigree. A worthy winner.

More thoughts

While watching the awards being announced, a few more stood out as being interesting.

World’s Best RyeStork Club Straight Rye: a German rye? A relatively recent international release, this continues the WWA’s tradition of overturning traditional country stereotypes – Zuidam’s Millstone Dutch rye has picked up the award before, and last year an American whiskey was named Best Pot Still, despite few people realising that anyone else but Ireland was producing Pot Still whiskey.

Best Scotch LowlandsAilsa Bay Sweet Smoke 1.2: Ailsa Bay may be a big distillery that produces huge amounts of malt for William Grant’s blended whiskies, but this award, and the rest of the praise heaped on both Sweet Smoke and the inaugural release, show that being big doesn’t stop you making great whisky.

Best Egyptian – Devlin: another country to add to my list of whisky producers. Unsurprisingly, I’d not heard of Devlin’s whisky before the first round of the awards were announced, but it is now firmly on my to-find list.

Best EnglishCotswolds Founder’s Choice: a year and a bit after its first release and Cotswolds has already risen to the top of the increasingly big English whisky heap. The Founder’s Reserve is an interesting whisky, showcasing the distillery’s STR casks – shaved, toasted and recharred wine casks, a type much-loved by the late Jim Swan, distilling consultant extraordinaire and creator of the Cotswolds style – a punchy type of cask that can overpower whisky when not managed correctly. As the award shows, despite the distillery’s relative youth, Cotswolds know how to make good whisky.
