2004 Old Pulteney 13 Year Old “K&L Exclusive” Single Cask No. 231 Cask Strength Highland Single Malt Whisky 750ml (ships as 1.5L) ($109.99)

This exceptional cask from the gorgeous little distillery in Wick is the first we’ve ever had directly from Old Pulteney. Distilled in late 2004 and filled into and ex-bourbon barrel, the whisky was bottled at the end of last year without any dilution or filtration of any kind. Old Pulteney, despite wining nurmerous accolades, remains one of Scotland’s great unsung heros in the Highlands. Built in 1826, it was not easily accesible until much later. Barley would have been shipped in on fishing vessels and whisky shipped out. While Wick was once known for their herring, it’s claim to fame is this wonderful malt that was once the most northerly distillery on mainland Scotland. The Pulteney Distillery has an extremely unusual lyne that slop sharply down into the condenser. The spirit is full bodied and packed with flavor and nearly 14 years in the cold damp warehouse near the distillery has given this whisky tons of oceany character. These nose is intense combo of rich toffee, vanilla, purple stone fruits and aged wood. The palate tingle with salty maltiness, seville orange peel, bold orchard fruit and salted dark cocoa. Creamy and textured building toward a long spice driven finish.

Old Pulteney is one of those under the radar distilleries that the geeks hate to talk about. No one was happy when Jim Murray named their now discontinued 21-year-old Whisky of the Year and rightfully so as it’s become nearly impossible to acquire at the original price. Despite the awards and good will from the cognoscenti, Pulteney has remained a background player in the single malt world. Current owners, ThaiBev, however are looking to establish the Old distillery in the very north of Scotland in its rightful place as one of the highlands most well regarded malts. Part of that process is changing from the off-year expressions to the more familiar age offerings (12, 18, 25), but also by launching seemingly secret single barrel program. Only a handful of shops have jumped on the opportunity to own a cask strength single barrel from the odd little distillery in Wick. We’ve been lucky enough to be one of them. As with many Pulteney, the nose is pure salt, malt, herbal tea and cardamom. The palate is deep with the roasted cocoa, fudge, touches of anise, fennel and vanilla. But of course, with water this thing erupts. Now on the nose the ripest Bartlett pears – smashed, lemon peel, Mirabelle, dried apricot, salted butter on toast. The anise moving much more toward mint and fennel flavors and a long creamy texture is pointed with cotton candy, lemon oils and the tiniest hints of diesel smoke. Staunchly pleasing due to its exceptional purity and straight forwardness. The in

Nosing this and I immediately recognized the danger. I immediately was reminded of Sierra Mist soda, pears and dried, candied ginger. Sipping it and the spirit was full bodied, and surprisingly silky given its age; notes of candied pears and spiced caramel apples dominated while there was just a slight hint of pencil shavings. The finish was a bit quick but pleasant as spiced pears and oak rounded this dram out. If not careful, this bottle could disappear in a hurry.

This is an elegant and easy to enjoy single malt that should please a lot of people. It is complex with clean and soft malty flavors that are delicate and fine. All of this is enhanced with a creamy mouth feel.

Ardbeg Drum: A Limited Allocation Now Available at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

Ardbeg Drum

A Unique and Delicious Expression of a Special Islay Malt
Ardbeg “Drum” Limited Edition Islay
Single Malt Whisky (750ml)
($109.99)

Every year the whisky world waits with bated breath for the release of Islay’s Ultimate Whisky. This malt at the end of the road just a mile before the Cross of Kildalton has been reborn over the last two decades. What was once almost certainly destined to become a living relic of a different era in Scotch production has transformed into one of the most exciting, dynamic, and sought-after malts. Yet, we don’t see a huge amount of new releases or unique expressions from the famed distillery, instead they release just ONE experimental batch a year. The Limited Edition is Ardbeg’s chance to offer its loyal followers a new take on this peaty monster. Each year, its esteemed Whisky Creator Dr. Bill Lumsden and Head Distiller Mickey Head join forces to find a new way to present this magnificent malt. Each year we receive a small allocation of the unique collaboration, which sells out without questions and becomes a must have for collectors, but also represents some of the most interesting Islay Malt we sell.

This year’s release is no less intriguing than ever before. Finished in fresh rum casks, the resulting whisky has the heady brine and deep smoke you’d expect from Ardbeg, plus a bountiful treasure of dense tropical fruits and Islay spices. We love the confluence of two very distinct and disparate Islays coming together in this magical product. Once this dram of Drum is done, we’ll have another one.

Ardbeg “Drum” Limited Edition Islay Single Malt Whisky (750ml) ($109.99)

The wonderful Limited Edition Ardbeg gives us a reason to celebrate the impending arrival of summer when the bottles are released on Ardbeg Day—June 1st. The Limited Edition bottling is one of the most-anticipated offerings every year and this year’s “Ardbeg Drum” has taken the line to a whole new level. Matured in ex-bourbon oak for presumably 10 years before being transferred entirely to ex-rum casks sourced from somewhere in the “Americas,” the Ardbeg Drum is a totally new expression of the unique flavors of Islay’s Ultimate Malt. Instead of the typical fresh lemon peel, we get ultra-ripe banana and zippy fresh pineapple. On the palate, Ardbeg’s rich briny smoke is pointed with spicy ginger, sweet vanilla bean, and deep baking spice. These extremely limited expressions always sell out, but we’re hoping these don’t end up sitting in the back of a collector’s cabinet because it’s such a unique and delicious expression of this special Islay malt.

Drioglann Cléire – Cape Clear Distillery

Site Progress

The last two months have seen accelerated progress with all the matters highlighted in the last update well in hand. The new external door and window to the bottling room are in place, as is the sink unit and some shelving. Very effective cleaning has seen the former cold room restored to a pristine clean condition. The tiling in the future fermentation room looks good, concrete floors have been painted, and a reinforced door installed for the storage area. The office area is ready for occupation and the washrooms are almost fully restored. The immediate environs of the building have seen the former raceway covered with slabs and a small (temporary) structure erected for the water treatment system which is currently being installed.

Sweat Investors

We are delighted at the support from some of our local ‘sweat investors’ which have led to various savings on our stated budget including useful economies made on the water treatment system, the restoration of the bottling room, and the nature and quality of some of the other works implemented. Go raibh maith agaibh go léir.

Customs and Excise License

We received our penultimate visit from the Customs and Excise people (responsible for licensing) on  28 May and they are happy to recommend the issuing of the license. With the formal paperwork now completed and the bond already paid, focus shifts to the practical items outstanding such as some internal templates which need to be modified for their final visit in about 2 weeks’ time and, of course, the completion of the outstanding works.  We are happy and relieved to be now within reach of this crucial goal.

Atex Wiring

The wiring to Atex standards is underway in the largely complete but yet unfurnished building. Some further adjustments needed to be made in the layout to facilitate the electrical installations and these were all achieved within the time frame. The wiring will also include fire and burglar alarms and CCTV cameras.

Bottling Plant

Our bottling plant has been specified and ordered. All the major items for Phase 1 are now on site or on the way.

Budget

It is not possible to ascertain the final costings until the final items have been completed and invoiced; nevertheless with savings incurred in some areas we remain within the original budget so far.

CCD4

Merchandise – Glassware

We have ordered a range of quality bespoke glassware bearing our logos which we expect to arrive mid-July. These will initially be available in the island tourist office / craft shop and later at the distillery site.

CCD5
We show a photo of team members Noreen and Ruth Court with Geraldine Ó Mealóid and Niamh Ní Drisceoil. Thanks also to Debbie Stone for her input.

Staffing

We have our first distillery staff ready to start from mid-June. While we may not be quite ready to produce gin at that stage, we will welcome their help in the myriad of pre-operation tasks that will need to be performed.

CCD6

Other Matters

Insurance has been arranged and an Operational Health and Safety Statement have been commissioned. Focus shifts towards the ongoing operation of the distillery with sourcing of stocks, supplies, and labels etc, which are now a priority.  Focus also shifts to near and long term marketing strategies as well as the overall development of our outstanding site.

Looking Forward

We look forward to creating a new and exciting phased approach towards our long term goal of whiskey distillation and are currently breaking this task down into another sequence of achievable steps.
