Three Exclusive Russell’s Reserve Casks—Hand-Picked, Underrated Gems – American Whiskey News

Three Spectacular Bourbons You’ll Only Find at K&L
“The three barrels we ended up taking represent everything we love about the Russell’s barrel program.”
— David Othenin-Girard, K&L SoCal Spirits Buyer

We are back with three more outstanding K&L exclusive casks from one of our favorite bourbon brands: Russell’s Reserve. As our SoCal spirits buyer notes in a recent Spirits Journal post, “They represent some of the final stocks from the Old Ripy/Gould distillery.” This historic distillery produced more than a few inspired bottlings over the years, and the trio featured here is certainly no exception. In the past, notice of Russell’s Reserve was muted, but a groundswell of interest is fast emerging, and with good reason as dollar for dollar they are among the best bourbon buys you’ll find anywhere. Dynamic, expressive, and with all the potency one expects from a powerhouse like Wild Turkey, they deliver precisely the kind of profile whiskey collectors adore. We urge you to scroll down and learn what makes each of these casks so unique. They are easily among the best we’ve had, further buttressing our belief that Russell’s Reserve delivers some of the top values in the realm of collectible bourbon. Our stocks are already disappearing fast, so don’t wait too long to secure your bottles.

Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel “#18-439” (Rickhouse CN A, Floor 4) K&L Exclusive Kentucky Straight Bourbon (750ml) ($64.99)

This delicious cask of Russell’s Reserve is another stunning example of why the Wild Turkey distillery is simply the most underrated distillery in Kentucky. Distilled on December 21st of 2009 at the now-demolished wooden distillery that sat below the current facility. This cask spent nine long years on the fourth floor of Wild Turkey’s Camp Nelson Warehouse A. These warehouses, about an hour’s drive south from the distillery in Tyrone, are well known for putting out some of the distillery’s best casks over the last couple of years. These warehouses were acquired sometime in the last few decades as Wild Turkey’s production has expanded. Camp Nelson tends to have a slightly different character than the Tyrone warehouses, but not nearly as different as the stone warehouses in Frankfurt produced. This excellent cask, one of two distilled and aged identically in this year’s batch, each has an extremely distinct character. Both have a little bit more honey and less spice compared with the Tyrone stocks. Interestingly, this cask was meant to be released in 2018, but someone reneged on the commitment, so it’s spent the last year in Tyrone. We took the opportunity to snatch this top notch barrel. This is one of the most obvious and open Russell’s we’ve ever bottled. The style here is opulent. Expect big sweet and savory wood tones, vanilla bean, pure raw honey and a velvety texture. A perfect example of the heights this special distillery can achieve.

I think people might finally be catching on to these Russell’s. We’ve struggled previously to get people excited about them, but for the first time our customers are getting out ahead of these and picking them off with little to no suggestion on our part. The three barrels we selected this year are truly some of their finest yet and represent probably some of the best bourbon we’ll sell all year, including the old and rare offerings. This awesome cask spent a year aging at the Tyrone warehouses compared to its sister 19-0345 which was distilled on the same day and aged on the same floor at Camp Nelson. The nose is a hedonist’s delight. Sweet muscovado sugar, rich dark cocoa, fine tobacco leaf, expensive spices. On the palate moving toward the baked apple and tingly cinnamon heat without going full on red hots. This is the real stuff right here. The chewy rich texture is what gets me most with this one, borderline syrupy. An absolute bomb by any measure.

Russell’s is one of the best bourbons you probably don’t purchase! That my friend is a shame. Just from the first whiff of the Single Barrel 18 439, it pops with the aroma of blood orange, cinnamon and caramel, to name a few good sniffs. The taste is warm, inviting and coats your mouth with fresh mint, tobacco and butterscotch! This is the perfect cigar bourbon. Sitting outside by a crackling fire, just taking in the slowing down time, finally enjoying the moment in this breakneck pace that we all live in. That is what a great bourbon does.

Another season sees another round of exceptional barrels from the wealth of Wild Turkey’s reserve stocks. In this case, my first impressions conjured cornflower, cherry and tobacco – an altogether pleasant, if straightforward nose. The depths therein, however, are anything but simple. Nutmeg, stewed apple, baking chocolate and a hefty dose of cinnamon take center stage backed up by dark sugar and prominent oak. There’s a lot going on here, and I was glad to revisit it several times throughout the day. This is definitely not one to sleep on.

Shelby Griffiths | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 17, 2019

Out of all of our Russel’s Reserve barrel picks this one stood out to me as the most baking spice driven. The aroma is incredibly warm & inviting with notes of cinnamon, orange peels, fennel fronds, with a touch of anise. I felt like the bourbon was enveloping my palate like it was cozying up in a warm fuzzy blanket on a cold night. Letting the those warm baking spices really come through and giving you the impression of a perfect Autumn night.

Jackson Lee | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 15, 2019

I’ve enjoyed all our Russell’s Reserves private barrel picks but this one in particular was such a fun bourbon to pour into a glass; so many interesting things going on and one of the more, tropical bourbons I’ve come across. On the nose I got cola and sarsaparilla, fennel seed, and then a strong whiff of coconut, vanilla, cherry, and chocolate came through unexpectedly. This is a nose you could contemplate for quite a while as things tended to move around and change. The palate expressed a lot of the cherry that was evident on the nose but added flavors of Hawaiian fruit punch, oak spice, candy coated fennel seed and demerara sugar. The finish was long and left me with a numbness in the center of my tongue, reminding me of how I’ll sometimes feel coming out of the dentists office. Along with the fun tactile ride, cherry notes and baking spices left their footprint on the finish.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 12, 2019

In a few words this barrel is expressive, direct and classic. The nose has vanilla, spice, and caramel aromas. In the mouth it is concentrated, and has a lot of depth and complexity in addition to some honey flavors. With a splash of water, vanilla notes come out in the nose. In the mouth, it is a little lighter bodied and comes across as slightly sweeter, but is still rich, juicy, complex, and classic.

Stefanie Juelsgaard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 11, 2019

The nose on this guy immediately comes across to me as sticky toffee pudding. The butterscotch, date, and vanilla characters are front and center and it feels warming and immediately comforting. The spice notes carry over to the palate, and are punchy and bold in the flavors. This would make for the ultimate after dinner bourbon heading into the cooler weather months as the flavors just scream the holidays to me.

Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel “#19-1108” (Rickhouse CN A, Floor 4) K&L Exclusive Kentucky Straight Bourbon (750ml) ($64.99)

We picked another set of excellent Russell’s Reserve barrels with the wonderful Bruce Russell back in April of 2019. Of the 20 casks we tasted that day, we selected three barrels that stood out as being some of the finest we’d ever experienced from the venerable distillery in Tyrone, KY. That’s saying a lot considering the incredible casks we’ve previously sold, but the bourbon world is starting to wake up to WT and especially these old casks which were distilled at the old demolished distillery down the hill from the current facility. Barrel #19-1108 was distilled on the exact same day as the excellent cask 18-439. It was filled into the same Camp Nelson rickhouse A and the same floor as its sister cask. The only difference in their maturation is cask #18-439 was pulled to Tyrone a year earlier and left there after being selected by someone else, but never bottled. We snatched that up the second we got a snort, but bought this barrel because of its obvious merits as well. It was only after that we realized they’ve been distilled on the very same day and aged in similar places. This cask is probably what most traditional Wild Turkey drinkers are looking for. An immediate rush of cola, big clove, dark vanilla bean, burnt citrus peel, hints of licorice, maple syrup, dried herbs and leaves. The palate is surprisingly supple with classic Red Hots, roasting coffee beans, citrus oil and a sweet caramelized oak. Big, bold and spicy—this is why they call her the Kickin’ Chicken.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 07, 2019

It’s always interesting to taste two casks that were distilled on the same day and lived in the same warehouse, but somehow taste wildly different. Whereas the 18-439 seems to have moved into what might be described as a bit of an outlier profile, this is right where I imagine a great barrel of WT at Camp Nelson for 10 years would be. The nose is that great contrast between the sweet cola, singing citrus peel and the dark earthy spice that we know and love from Turkey. The palate is rich and textured with less cinnamon than its sister and more roasted spices, sweet bark and earthy pepper. The palate is driven and long with the dark green herbs and menthol taking over. A really serious bottle best for an expert palate.

Jackson Lee | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 07, 2019

The WT Russell’s line may be some of my favorite consistent single barrels we’re able to get. This barrel hit a lot of high tones for me. The nose was a bit tight under the proof but I got strong herbal hints of sassafras, fennel bulb contrasted by sweeter notes of brown sugar, maraschino cherry, and green apple skin. The palate was bright and very sweet, with baking spices, caramelized yellow peaches and brown sugar ginger cookies. The textural component was nice as well, it was soft with a light kick and the finish was long and just a touch waxy. A beautiful dram of bourbon I’d be happy to work on through the holidays.

Shelby Griffiths | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 17, 2019

This barrel stood out to me with its friendly, charming quality. Golden apples, dried citrus peels, fresh caramel, sarsaparilla, with a touch of anise. The palate was very approachable, with an endearing sweetness. Uplifting, warm, and cheerful, this bourbon is like that friend that can always cheer you up when you’re having a bad day.

Will Blakely | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 17, 2019

I was first struck by the sweet and sticky nose, which caused me initially to interpret this bottle as the brown sugar beast among the lot. Upon further investigation, though, it unveils an impressive and nuanced array of flavors. The dark syrup is merely an adornment for apricot, sultana, orange zest and crunchy graham cracker. And atop all that, somehow, white pepper and rosemary float effortlessly, providing a compelling counterpoint without creating strife. With exceptional balance and a fascinating finish, it keeps me coming back for more.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 12, 2019

For me this was the barrel that was the most like a good piece of candy. The nose has floral and vanilla aromas, and in the mouth it was sweet, with butterscotch and caramel flavors. A touch of water continues this flavor profile, but opens the bourbon up a little. Although sweet and pretty, this barrel has a certain amount of elegance to it to help make it a delicious treat.

Stefanie Juelsgaard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 11, 2019

The herbs and anise notes jump off the nose as soon as this hits your glass. The aromatics are insanely lively and unique. Tea, pepper, and orange rind come across on the palate, but there is sweetness in the form of toffee and vanilla to give some balance. Any opportunity we get, K&L likes to get our selected barrels bottled at cask strength so the customer can decide how they want to enjoy them. While you do get some heat on the tongue, this one isn’t overwhelming, but has just a high enough proof to make the finish go on and on.

Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel “#19-345” (Rickhouse CN F, Floor 6) K&L Exclusive Kentucky Straight Bourbon (750ml) ($64.99)

This barrel is the outlier among this year’s selection of Russell’s Reserve. Unlike the other two, which were both distilled in December of 2009 and aged in Camp Nelson Warehouse A, this cask was distilled on November 13th of 2009 and spent nine years on the 6th floor of Warehouse F on the Camp Nelson campus. Like cask 439, this one was was bottled on June 29th of 2019. For whatever reason, it shows more of the earthy aromatics than the other casks. Still it remains very balanced, but is neither as sweet as 439 nor a spicy as 1108. Instead, the aromatic profile is very roasty, showing the Turkey’s dark meat a bit here. Expect strong aromas of roasted vanilla and coffee bean, forest floor, sweet charred oak, leather and dried herbs. The palate is long and sweetens up enough to keep it from feeling harsh or austere. Some might argue that this is the best cask of the three, but it is simply a different side of Turkey that we happen to absolutely adore. We don’t see that many casks that show this profile and when we do we snatch them up immediately.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 07, 2019

This gorgeous barrel, aged for slightly longer than the other two, is what I like to call the dark meat. This is that earthy, herbal Turkey that lacks the overt spicy heat of its siblings, but makes up for it in complexity and aromatic depth. The nose of roasted coffee, candied citrus, birch and old leather. On the palate a black tea, more roasting herbs, sweet wild honey and dried plums. Weirdly the easiest of the three to consume despite the slightly more restrained flavor profile. Really damn good hooch here.

Will Blakely | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 17, 2019

This expression proved the most difficult for me to classify, and that might make it the most interesting. Savory and unique, an indelible herbal note sets the tone. A persistent nose of yeast, like fine lees in wine, keeps my face glued to the edge of my glass as I try to discern the secret blend of herbs and spices that causes my mouth to water like this. Banana and its leaves, subtle paraffin, and Brazil nut pair seamlessly with sweet cereal and gentle chamomile. It’s mind-boggling, but an exciting and intriguing challenge. Is that teak wood I smell? Walnut? Just when I think I’ve settled on something, it’s gone, replaced by something equally enticing. I implore you to solve these mysteries for yourself.

Shelby Griffiths | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 17, 2019

I felt like each time I revisted this barrel it kept revealing something new, a deeper layer to me. At first on the nose I found notes of mocha & milk chocolate, that then evolved into a more herbaceous eucalyptus & tea tree character, all while having a subtle note of nuttiness, like Brazil nuts, lingering in the background. The palate was focused and attention grabbing with a sweet peppermint quality that enhanced this already complex experience. Definitely a whisky I would like have at home to have more time with, and share with friends.

Jackson Lee | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 17, 2019

Another wonderful offering from WT. Similar yet different from the other private Russell’s barrels 19-345 hits with purple plums, chocolate covered raisins, vanilla, and sarsaparilla on the nose. The palate starts off a sweet demerara sugar note, with a velvety texture and moves into cherry punch, plums, and purple NERDS candy. The finish presented more of a maraschino cherry note mixed with sweet herbs and lingered for quite a while. Solid bourbon for the price!

Stefanie Juelsgaard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 13, 2019

Creamy vanilla, sponge cake, and candied fruit shine on the nose here. This is rich and luscious, but not heavy, as it has higher tones and brighter notes to it. This would make the ultimate pre-dinner bourbon either alone or mixed with its punchy and fresh flavors.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: October 12, 2019

Another interesting and delicious selection. I tasted this single barrel bourbon with and without water. Without water the nose has caramel notes that lead to an expressive, round, juicy, and concentrated sprite. There are beautiful spice notes that help round out this bourbon. With a drop or two of water, the nose is deep, complex, and interesting. In the mouth, barrel #345 is still concentrated, and the honey and caramel sweetness are expressed more fully. The spice notes are still there, but are a little more subtle.

A Deeply Discounted Price on a Dazzling Rye from Heaven Hill at K&L California – American Whiskey News

A Potent Thrill Ride at an Amazing Price
Pikesville Straight Kentucky Rye (750ml) (Previously $50)
“Sizzling…Crackling…Exciting ride, great ending.” — Whisky Advocate

When we were offered a special, one-time discount on the riveting Pikesville Straight Kentucky Rye, we knew immediately that we had to act. Not only is it one of the better ryes in Heaven Hill’s stable (Old Fitzgerald, Rittenhouse, Henry McKenna, Elijah Craig, etc.), but it was a major force behind the resurgence of Rye in the past few years. Clocking in at a powerful 110-proof, it is not for the faint at heart, but boy does this Rye deliver. Spicy with tantalizing undercurrents of vanilla, caramel, and oak, this whiskey operates on a multitude of levels. We previously had the Pikesville at $50, but we are now offering it at a price so low that we can’t show it here. This is an exceptional opportunity for any whiskey fan and one that should not be missed. You’ll need to act quickly, however, as this won’t be around for long.

Pikesville Straight Kentucky Rye (750ml) (Previously $50) Price: Hidden

92 points Wine Enthusiast: “Look for a rich caramel-maple aroma and spice-forward flavor profile, showing allspice and clove, with a layer of vanilla underneath. Dilution tames this rye to show more vanilla, accented with dry touches of oak, leather and cocoa. Aged at least six years. Sip or mix. (KN)” (07/2016)

Whisky Advocate: “Heaven Hills 80-proof standard Pikesville is a summer favorite, so I was eager to try this. A woody depth to it at 6 years old: 110 proof-hot, stewed plum and horehound candy, and sizzling rye spice behind it. It’s a jawbreaker: full and hot in the mouth, with sweet grassy spice, bitter rye grain as it progresses, and crackling sugar near the end, just before it all smooths into a savory layered finish. Exciting ride, great ending. (LB, Fall 2015)”

K&L Notes: First produced in Maryland in the 1890s, this brand moved to Kentucky after Prohibition and is now operated by Heaven Hill. Whisky Advocate named it “Distillery of the Year” and “at the spearhead of the rye resurgence” in 2011. Tasting notes from the producer: “Dusty cocoa notes with oaky smoke underneath. Dry and spicy, with honeyed rye and cloves. Soft vanilla and baking spices.”

Johnnie Walker Master Blender Dr Jim Beveridge receives an OBE for services to Scotch

Johnnie Walker Master Blender Dr Jim Beveridge receives an OBE for services to Scotch

Johnnie Walker Master Blender, Dr Jim Beveridge, has been awarded an OBE by Her Majesty The Queen for his outstanding service to the Scotch whisky industry.

Dr Beveridge was presented with his OBE medal by Her Majesty during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, in recognition of his remarkable career spanning almost four decades with Diageo.

During his career Dr Beveridge has established himself as one of the most highly respected figures in the industry, renowned for his skill and dedication to quality, as well as his considered and unassuming manner.

The accolade comes as Johnnie Walker, the world’s most popular Scotch whisky, prepares to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2020. Dr Beveridge is only the sixth person in two centuries of the company’s history to have held the position of Master Blender, the first being founder John Walker himself.

Commenting on the receiving the award Dr Beveridge dedicated it to his colleagues across the Scotch whisky industry. He said: “It was a wonderful experience to receive this award from Her Majesty the Queen and it is an honour that I am delighted to receive on behalf of all the people I have worked with in Scotch whisky over the past four decades.

“Scotch truly is a team effort at every step from grain to glass and it is a privilege to work in such a special industry. I dedicate this award to all the women and men in our distilleries, coppersmiths, cooperage, warehouses and bottling halls across Scotland who are all responsible for making Johnnie Walker.”

Congratulating Dr Beveridge on receiving his award, Diageo Chief Executive Ivan Menezes, said: “This is a very special day for Jim and his family and I am delighted to congratulate them on behalf of everyone at Diageo.

“Jim is renowned in the Scotch industry for his dedication to the craft of whisky-making and for the incredible whiskies he creates for Johnnie Walker, but he is also known as an exceptional colleague and friend to the people he works with. This is worthy recognition of an extraordinary career spanning four decades.”

Johnnie Walker Global Brand Director John Williams added his tribute: “Everyone in the Johnnie Walker family is delighted to see Jim receive this recognition for the remarkable contribution he’s made to Johnnie Walker and to Scotch whisky.

“Jim has not just been the guardian of almost two centuries of Johnnie Walker heritage, he has also been a restless pioneer, always learning and always seeking new frontiers of flavour in Scotch whisky.”

Johnnie Walker is at the heart of a £150 million investment programme in Scotch whisky tourism by Diageo, including creating a global flagship visitor attraction in Edinburgh and transforming the company’s 12 distillery visitor experiences around Scotland.

Barbara Smith appointed as General Manager of the Johnnie Walker visitor experience in Edinburgh – Scotch Whisky News

Barbara Smith appointed as General Manager of the Johnnie Walker visitor experience in Edinburgh

One of the UK’s most respected culture, leisure and tourism business leaders has been appointed to run the new global flagship visitor attraction for Johnnie Walker, the world’s leading Scotch whisky.

Barbara Smith will join Diageo as General Manager of the new Johnnie Walker Princes Street visitor experience in Edinburgh and will also be responsible for running the 14 distillery brand homes in Scotland, leaving her current post as Chief Executive of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland.

The Johnnie Walker Princes Street attraction is the focal point of Diageo’s £150 million investment in Scotch whisky tourism, which includes the transformation of the visitor experiences at the distilleries around Scotland.

Ms Smith has over 30 years leadership experience running some of the UK’s foremost leisure and tourist attractions, including Edinburgh Castle, Chester Zoo and Edinburgh Zoo, building a strong reputation for developing major visitor destinations.

Announcing the appointment Cristina Diezhandino, Diageo Global Scotch Whisky Director, said“We are absolutely delighted to have recruited a leader of Barbara’s quality to run our whisky visitor experiences in Scotland.

“She has an exceptional record of leadership at some of the UK’s most successful attractions and we are thrilled to have someone of such capability, experience and vision joining us. We look forward to working with Barbara to deliver our ambition of creating the world’s leading whisky destinations.”

Barbara Smith said: “I am incredibly excited to join Diageo and Johnnie Walker at a time when they are making such a major investment in the future of Scotch whisky tourism, both in Edinburgh with the Johnnie Walker Princes Street flagship and in distilleries around Scotland. I look forward enormously to playing a leading role in delivering this transformational programme.

“I would like to thank my colleagues at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. It is a wonderful organisation and it has been a true privilege to lead them over the last few years. I wish everyone there the very best for the future.”

As well as creating the Johnnie Walker Princes Street global flagship Diageo’s whisky tourism investment will transform four distilleries – Glenkinchie, Cardhu, Caol Ila and Clynelish – that will be linked to the Edinburgh venue, representing the ‘four corners of Scotland’ and the regional flavour variations crucial to the art of making whisky.  Together these sites will create a unique Johnnie Walker tour of Scotland, encouraging visitors to the capital city to also travel to the country’s extraordinary rural communities.

Diageo is also investing over £35 million to restore the iconic lost distilleries of Brora in the Highlands and Port Ellen on Islay, which will take the number of distillery visitor experiences in Scotland to 14.

The cost is just $25 for 8 whiskies including the Berry’s Perspective Series Blends (21, 25 & 35 Year olds). This is our last scheduled whisky tasting at KWM in 2019 with room for registration. Sorry! WI could not publish this in time!

Friday is the start of our Fall Super Sale. This is our biggest and most anticipated Sale of the year. All in-stock whisky, with the exception of most Scotch Malt Whisky Society whiskies, the Whisky Advent Calendar™ and other select new releases, will be 10-35% off in-store and online. I will be putting out a special Malt Messenger Bulletin on Friday morning, highlighting the best deals.

We have a few new whiskies to tell you about as well. Firstly, we have four new releases from Bruichladdich: Black Art 1994 7.1, Port Charlotte 2012 Islay Barley and a pair of Octomores 10.1 & 10.3. We weren’t expecting these whiskies so soon, Christmas has come early.

We are also thrilled to be the only place in Alberta with the Shelter Point Smoke Point, a whisky finished in ex-Laphroaig Quarter Casks. Staying in the Canadian theme, we also have the latest 40+ year old release from Canadian Club, the Chronicles 42 Year. The oldest Canadian whisky ever botttled! And last but not least the Highland Park Valfather has arrived, the most heavily peated Highland Park ever bottled.

I hope this Malt Messenger Bulletin finds you well. Please let me know if you have any comments, questions or requests. As always, in the event of a discrepancy in price, the Point of Sale at KWM will be taken as correct.

Slàinte!

New Whiskies from Bruichladdich

Including a Pair of Octomores

We weren’t expecting this quartet until later in the year or early in 2020. I suppose you could say Christmas has come early for fans of the Laddie!

  1. Bruichladdich Black Art 1994 7.1 – 48.8% – 25 Year – A secret mix of casks selected by Head Distiller Adam Hannet – Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: Unbelievable complexity, each cask that has played a role in maturing this whisky has a presence, the aromas lift from the glass in an almost orderly procession. First a rich marzipan, then walnut, crème caramel, turkish delight, hints of strawberry, violet, and coconut. There is a heavy fruit style with plum, poached pears, raisin and grapefruit and after opening further wood spice, nutmeg, toasted oak, roasted coffee beans, and muscovado sugar. An absolute delight to nose and discover the depth of flavour. Palate: A little sharpness is a nod to the strength but quickly the satin texture covers the palate to give a viscous, round mouthfeel. The oak’s power and poise give a hint of dryness but also waves of coconut, Turkish delight, soft caramel, and spiced orange. The layers of oak and fruit that come through softly melt into one another; each sip brings a new level of discovery within this most complex of assemblages. While on the palate there appears less complexity than on the nose, an important balance, texture, and defined style serves to highlight the aromatic aspect of this whisky. Finish: It seems that this whisky will go on forever, the incredible viscous texture of this whisky extends the finish and it lingers on the palate. Roasted nuts, then tropical fruit, baked pineapple, and butterscotch give a sweetness that is sure to be remembered. Mood: As ever the mystery of its creation serves to intrigue. Black Art 07.1 gives a moment to reflect on the past and to welcome the possibilities of the future.” – $355
  2. Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 2012 Islay Barley – 50% – 6 Year – Barley from 8 different Islay Farms – Peated to 40PPM – 75% First Fill ex-American oak and 25% Second Fill French oak ex-Wine Casks –Producer Tasting Note: “Nose: Initially a fresh linen and sandy sea breeze note stands out. Zesty lemon, a green fruit signature, apple sauce and crunchy pears follow. Floral geranium notes come through with sea pinks and gooseberry. then creamy coconut dipped in chocolate opens up quickly with muddy peat smoke, burnt heather and peach skin. hints of vanilla and toasted malt. The aromas speak of the spirit, the distillation and the barley. Palate: On the lips it’s soft and sweet, texturally there is a thin honey style that slips across the palate. Immediately there is more from the cask here, vanilla, milk chocolate and light cedar and black pepper. Warmed scones and honey from the malt wrapped in earthy smoke and soft apricot. creamy, minty, tablet brings a sweetness and a warm salty sand hint of Islay. Finish: The finish is coconut and peat smoke, mildly iodine-y and hints of almond and geranium. The peat smoke gently fades away. Character: Wonderfully balanced to show the fruity style of the spirit on the nose and the delicate influence of the cask on the palate. The peat smoke weaves its way gently through the whisky highlighting the softer sweeter notes. This 2012 vintage has a freshness and balance that tells the story of the place to which it belongs.” – $90
  3. Bruichladdich Octomore 10.1 – 59.8% – 5 Year – 107PPM – Producer Description: “Distilled from Scottish barley in 2013, Octomore 10.1 is the benchmark of the 10s series. Deliberately stripped back to an ex- American oak maturation, aged just 5 years old, the .1 edition exposes the structure and presence of the Octomore spirit. Combining smoke with a modest maturation, this 10.1 first and foremost demonstrates the true potential of a considered, patient distillation.” – Producer Tasting Note: “Character: Lithe, supple, powerfully confident and a dram more than the sum of its parts. Slow trickle distillation is the hallmark of this muscular, oily spirit. Aroma: Vanilla led, caramel, hints of smoke but tamed back. candied apple, gooseberry and marzipan. Taste: Soft yet powerful and warming on the palate, peppery, barley sugar, smokey – dried earth and hints of rubber. Warm sand, sweetness of charred oak and pineapple. Finish: Sweetness from tablet/fudge and a strong peat smoke and cold marine air combination.” – $145
  4. Bruichladdich Octomore 10.3 – 61.3% – 6 Year – 114PPM – Producer Description: “Distilled in 2013 from the 2012 harvest, the Octomore 10.3 has been brought home by farmer James Brown. Taking on the challenge of growing Islay Barley, he braces the conditions of the wet and wild west coast to combine an exploration of Islay terroir and stratospheric smoke. For the first time, the .3 is matured for six aged years but crucially only in ex-American oak. These top-quality casks have gently coaxed this Octomore spirit into life in Warehouse 16, next to our 10.1 edition. The components of our 10.1 and 10.3 are so similar, the distinct flavour difference must be owed to the barley’s respective growing location.” – Producer Tasting Note: “Character: Marine freshness, Islay air and a deep rooted level of fruitiness from the distillation characterise this release. Aroma: Earthy peat smoke, dry and a little medicinal, lemon drops, and thyme come through and then marine, sea shell notes along with some vanilla and fudge from the oak. Taste: Salt on the lips and more honey and lemon on the palate, then the peat sweeps in with the oak and heat from the high strength. Deeper flavours from the spirit, pear and gooseberry are more defined and richer. Finish: Sweet on the finish initially with pastry and chocolate but then bitter notes of rubbery smoke and spice towards the end.” – $172

Introducing Shelter Point Smoke Point

The First Peated Shelter Point Release

Exclusive to KWM in Alberta, the Shelter Point Smoke Point is the distillery’s first ever peated expression. The whisky was matured 5 years in ex-Bourbon before finishing for 9 months in ex-Laphroaig Quarter Casks. 1044 bottles were produced with just 36 coming to Alberta.

Shelter Point Smoke Point – 55% – Matured 5 Years Before Finishing in ex-Laphroaig Quarter Casks – Producer Description: “Introducing Shelter Point’s first ever peat influenced whisky. This single grain smoky delight has been aged in American oak ex-bourbon casks for 5 years and finished in casks previously used by a famous Islay distillery for 8 months. This special bottling consists of only 1044 hand numbered bottles. The whisky is made from malted and unmalted barley and picks up influences of bourbon from the American oak cask and peated whisky from the ex-Islay casks. Sweet, smoky and complex, this whisky is perfect for a dram by the fire.” – Producer Tasting Note: “Smoke Point whisky is sweet, medicinal and smoky on the nose with barley sugars, iodine and campfire. The palate is sweet caramel, vanilla and sea salt, with peated warmth comforting the soul. The satisfying finish is a delicious combination of creamy pudding and a brand new first aid kit.” – $94

Introducing: Canadian Club Chronicles 42 Year

The Oldest Canadian Whisky for the 3rd Year Running: 40, 41 & Now 42!

Distilled in 1977, this second batch in the Canadian Club Chronicles series is called the Dock Man. Made of corn whisky matured in American Oak barrels. It is the oldest Canadian whisky ever bottled, and in the words of Davin de Kergommeaux, the foremost expert on Canadian whisky, “it is spectacular”.

Canadian Club Chronicles 42 Year – 45% – Producer Description: “With this 2nd release in the CC Chronicles series, we pay tribute to the dock men who operated floating liquor stores & bars aboard their vessels. Despite the presence of many counterfeit makers of CC, savvy bar owners and whisky fans knew they could count on the dock men to provide only genuine Canadian Club®. With this 42-year-old whisky, we celebrate their uncompromising commitment to origin, authenticity, quality and craftsmanship.” – Tasting Note Davin de Kergommeaux: “The Dock Man is a sweet luscious whisky with a deep, complex nose and palate. Fruity and floral notes entwine delicately with Canadian Club’s signature prunes and black raisins followed by tartish apple skins, and apricots. Mild peppery spices evolve into sweetish baking spices, while woody notes are restrained, with soft tannins pulling gently on the cheeks. Dark fruit returns in a long spicy finish.” – $275

Introducing: Highland Park Valfather

The Third & Final Release in the Viking Legends Series

The final bottling in the “Viking Legends” series, Valfather is the most heavily peated whisky ever released by the distillery. Matured exclusively in Refill casks to allow the spirit to dominate the profile. Valfather, or father of the slain, is one of Odin’s (the most powerful Norse God) many names and a reference to his place presiding over the Golden Hall in Valhala.

Producer Description

“VALFATHER – the final whisky in a series of three special edition Viking Legend releases – is inspired by Odin, the mightiest of the Norse gods. The most peated whisky we have released to date, it is matured entirely in refill casks to give beautifully balanced layers of flavour and a character as complex as Odin himself.

“Odin is associated with wisdom and knowledge; with sorcery and poetry; with battle, frenzy and death. The old legends also tell us of the tame beasts who bring him both protection and support – Sleipnir the eight-legged flying horse; the tame wolves, Geri and Freki; and Huginn and Muninn, his loyal ravens – but is at the jaws of the savage wolf, Fenrir, that Odin finally meets his end at Ragnarök.”

Highland Park Valfather – 47% – Matured in Refill Casks – Producer Tasting Note

“Sweet apple | Fragrant pear | Crème brûlée | Toasted cedar wood | Smoked paprika | Aromatic peat smoke” – $104

There is also still stock available of the two previous releases:

  1. Highland Park Vakyrie – 45.9% – First Fill American oak and Ex-Sherry – Producer’s Tasting Note: “Green apples | Sun-ripened lemons | Oriental spices | Vanilla | Preserved ginger | Dark chocolate | Salty liquorice | Warm aromatic smoke.” – $105
  2. Highland Park Valknut – 46.8% – Predominantly Matured in Sherry Seasoned Casks – Producer’s Tasting Note: “Toasted vanilla pods | Cracked black pepper | Oak shavings | Cloves | Aniseed | Aromatic peat smoke” – $105
