Scotch Malt Whisky Society of America “New Society Offerings – Holiday Outturn” – Scotch Whisky News

Leather armchairs and old wardrobes

Cask No. 16.32                                  $95

Highlands, Eastern Highlands

The nose was certainly savoury (salty bacon, roast parsnips, beef in red wine reduction) but also sweet (buttery croissants, marmalade, toffee) with hints of coke embers, engine rooms, tobacco, struck match, floral notes and ‘old wardrobes’. The palate was rich and substantial, oozing unctuous sweetness, but with balancing spiciness – maple syrup, treacle and a Jamaican Christmas cake. The reduced nose offered zesty citric peel, candied fruits, salty toffee, leather armchairs and coffee. The reduced palate was an amazing dessert, combining lemon meringue pie, sticky toffee pudding and icing sugar-dusted biscotti dipped in espresso. The distillery houses the Famous Grouse Experience.

Drinking tip: A kitchen table dram – perfect reward for all that cooking and baking

Colour: Light, orangey gold                                  Date distilled: March 2001

Cask: Refill port pipe                                             Alcohol: 57.2%

Age: 10 years                                               USA allocation: 120 Bottles

Poire et poivre

Cask No. 25.63                                  $145

Lowlands, Central Lowlands

The nose suggested fermenting beer – still life on the lid of a washback – green apples, a pear, a peach, some lemon puffs, a stone bowl containing sweet pipe tobacco and a bunch of fresh spring flowers. Pears again on the palate (riper now), also some fizzy fruit (sherbet lemons), more flowers (this time from high summer) and definite peppery spice (‘poire et poivre’). The second nosing had mild liquorice (sherbet dib-dabs) tobacco leaf and pear and nettle sorbet. The reduced palate gave light, pleasant flavours of bergamot and floral perfumes; a mild tingly finish. From Falkirk’s sadly now defunct distillery.

Drinking tip: Summer-time dram – perhaps to accompany tea in the garden

Colour: Winter moonbeams                                 Date distilled: November 1990

Cask: Refill hogshead                                           Alcohol: 59.8%

Age: 21 years                                               USA allocation: 108 Bottles

Bottled essence of summer

Cask No. 106.18                               $175

Highlands, Speyside

Our noses found poignant floral perfumes, shrubberies and pine tree freshness. We also detected ripe fruits (apple, mango), candles, cinnamon, clove and honey on buttered toast. The palate was chewy and delicious; fragrant wood, flowers and tropical fruits (lychee, apricot, passion fruit) mingled with sweet toffee flavours to draw sighs of contentment from the panel. The reduced nose, with tutti-frutti ice-cream, lime, sawn wood and aromatherapy oils made us think of warm summer nights. The palate now carried rose and lemon-flavoured Turkish Delight with stem ginger spicy warmth in the tail-flick. The distillery houses the spiritual home of Johnnie Walker.

Drinking tip: Perfect dram for the first day of your holiday

Colour: Yellowish amber                                    Date distilled: November 1984

Cask: Refill hogshead                                           Alcohol: 52.6%

Age: 27 years                                               USA allocation: 78 Bottles

Chestnut puree and new hiking boots

Cask No. 128.3                                  $85

Welsh

The nose was sweet and fruity – macerated raspberries, Kirsch, cherry jam, Dr. Peppers, chocolate-coated cranberries and Haribo mix, but with fudge, toffee, hints of swimming pools and ‘brake pedals in an ambulance’. The palate held something deeply rewarding but hard to describe – sweet woodiness; hot, but also smooth – sumptuous flavours of vanilla slice, banana ice lollies (right to the stick) and milk chews. The reduced nose had evident vanilla, Berwick Cockles, prunes, plums, peaches, chestnut purée and new hiking boots. The palate now delivered exotic fruits (passion fruit, star-fruit) like some long-matured single malts. From the only distillery in Wales.

Drinking tip: A bit of a surprise dram – use it to create a stir

Colour: Vibrant yellow gold                                  Date distilled: October 2006

Cask: First-fill barrel                                               Alcohol: 61.3%

Age: 5 years                                                USA allocation: 78 Bottles

A Smoky, Peachy, Yoghurt of Loveliness

Cask No. 129.1                                  $85

Islay

Your speed boat rockets out of Leith; you’re heading for 60 knots; the city disappears behind; the clouds part. The noise of traffic dies down; the hubbub and stress are left behind; your mind floats to aromas of barley fields and eucalyptus in rainforests; the only sound is the ticking of the engine; the dominant flavours are the Arbroath smoky, butter beans and tzatziki on the sandwiches you packed. Think of incense, forget the rat race, cut the engine… and enjoy the finish of the smoky, peachy yoghurt of loveliness as you float into open water.

Drinking tip: Day or night; come rain or shine; with friends or alone

Colour: Olympic gold                                       Date distilled: June 2006

Cask: First-fill barrel                                               Alcohol: 60.2%

Age: 5 years                                                USA allocation: 114 Bottles

Tasting Notes for OLD & RARE:

OAR0182 St Magdelene 30 year old
On the nose detect a clean – fresh and herbal style which warms to barley , caramelised fruit (particularly peaches) and crème anglaise/ vanilla custard. Palatewise it is still sweet and herbal – being distinctly fruited, now in a macerated style, and carries warming spices together with toffee/fudge flavours. The finish remains fruity with that same peachy style plus molasses and demerara sugar- showing a late butterscotch and cereal based style. (F) – PLEASE NOTE – THIS ALSO HAS A MID NOVEMBER RELEASE

OAR0179 Port Ellen 35 year old
Opens in a softly subtle – yet self evidently Islay – style, then anticipate smoked barley-mocha-peat and a leathery belt combination. Palatewise it is initially light – but holding it opens it to soft tar, bonfire ash with more coffee and chocolate flavours which all run to a finish which is now more tarry – citric – sooty and phenolic. (F)

OAR0136 Bunnahabhain 37 year old Sherry
The nose is rich and heavily spiced and carries a marinated plums character with a polished oak quality. Still massively spiced on the palate, it now develops to dried fruit & nuts with an attractive oceanic style – lightly salted and softly peated. The finish is long, carries a dark chocolate quality and remains spicy with a ginger and pepper quality. (J)

CLAN DENNY Tasting Notes:

DEN0091 Port Dundas 34 year old
Burnt orange plus Scotch tablet sweet as the nose opens – detect also some soft oak and perfumed spices. Palatewise anticipate mouthcoating sweetness – in the style of sugary fudge, flambéed banana and sherbet – running to an equally all combining sweet finish with soft spices and floral notes off setting it. (F)

DEN0090 North of Scotland 38 year old
Screams Bourbon initially on the nose – it is so sweet and very vanilla’d – distinctly toffee’d and coffee’d in style. Early oak gives way on the palate to creamy and vanilla flavours – maybe even some citric pineapple and more toffee – then its (all too short finish) is candied, still creamy, softly spiced and buttery (F).

DEN0070 Dumbarton Bourbon 46 year old
Massively and sweetly spiced early on the nose – it then softens to a truly fruity mixed bag – beyond which detect sugar and light oak. The palate is BIG, still fructiferous but carries black coffee, sweet spices and vanilla flavours – all neatly (and too swiftly) replicated on the finish. (F)

That was a busy 6-7 weeks of tastings for Mr Fred – but he believes there are some real value-for-money younger, quality driven PROVENANCE bottlings – allied to some top end Malts, too many to itemise from OLD MALT CASK/DIRECTOR’S CUT and OLD & RARE … but they are – we believe – self-evident!

Yours faithfully

Top Picks, Back in Stock & New Arrivals at K&L California – Whisky News

Top Picks

Johnnie Walker Green Label 15 year old Blended Malt Whisky 750ml ($55.99)
94 points Wine Enthusiast: “This maple syrup-toned spirit is a blend of Islay and Speyside malts, with no grain whisky added. The result is an effortless mix of lightly smoky and oaky caramel notes, and a smooth, velvety feel. A splash of branchwater amps up the peat quotient.” (09/2011) 89 points Whisky Advocate: “Just as complex as Johnnie Walker Gold, but fuller and more richly textured. (Not surprising, given that there are no grain whiskies in Johnnie Walker Green.) This is one of the finer vatted malts on the market. Its flavors are well-integrated. You’ll find creamy toffee and nougat at its core, which is then layered with notes of vanilla, mint, fresh brine, and even a hint of mustard seed. Excitingly fresh and vibrant on the finish. A whisky for both the blend and single malt drinker. (Vol. 14, #2) ” K&L Notes: Special order items are not in stock and are dependent upon quantity available from distribution. All special orders are final and non-refundable. Top Blended Whisk(e)y – 2006 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The preliminary aromas are an interesting mix of paraffin, toasted cereal and dried tobacco leaf; more minutes resting in the copita stimulate fragrances of summer grass, vegetable oil, light toffee and oak. Palate entry is off-dry and a touch toffee/nougat-like; at midpalate the oiliness/oakiness noted in the latter stages of nosing come to the fore as tastes of sweet butter, oleo margarine and black pepper vie for flavor dominance. Finishes chewy and a tad honeyed.

Scotland – Single Malt Scotch

Bowmore Legend Islay Single Malt Whisky 750ml ($23.99)
The Bowmore Legend is an absolutely delicious Islay whisky. It’s got the perfect amount of smoke and the right amount of richness. At this price, we had to taste it against Johnnie Black and there’s really no comparison. The Walker Black, being a blend, is tasty enough, but it thins out at the back when the malt turns into grain. The Bowmore Legend being 100% single malt whisky is simply more exciting and smoother on the finish. Being someone who loves oily, smoky, and fruity flavors in my malt, I can’t think of a better deal for a bottle of whisky since I started working at K&L. This is cheaper than Glenfiddich 12!!! Kudos to Morrison-Bowmore for finding new ways to work with retailers and bring consumers some financial relief. (David Driscoll, K&L Spirits Buyer)

1995 Mortlach 17 year Duncan Taylor Dimensions Single Malt Whisky 750ml – 4 available ($134.99)
This meaty Mortlach comes from Duncan Taylor’s high quality “Dimensions” line. It exemplifies this rare and wonderful distillery perfectly. Bottled at cask strength, availability will be very limited.

United States – Bourbon and Rye

2002 Evan Williams Single Barrel #726 K&L Exclusive Bourbon 750ml ($26.99)
Our first ever Evan Williams exclusive barrel is here. Enchanting as it is affordable, Evan Williams is one of America’s great whiskies. Here we have a single barrel that we selected after combing through countless samples. While the standard Evan Williams is great and bottled one barrel at a time, occasionally you get a bottle that just out shines the rest. Trying to find another bottle from that same cask is next to impossible. What we have is an entire cask of this superior quality, one that will certainly be compared to the best offerings from this famed brand to date. It’s extremely limited yielding less than 16 cases. This is one of the more elegant Evan Williams, I’ve come across. Easy and approachable, but with tons of depth. Some tropical citrus flavors, mark the overal honey and spice. The palate shows great depth, although it’s not one of these sticky bourbons. The sweatness is balanced by a lovely exotic tea element, not bitter, but a bit tanni c. It all come together with a lovely drinkable balance and a totally lack of any heat at all. This is painfully easy to drink. Be very careful!

Smooth Ambler Old Scout 11 Year Old Bourbon 750ml – 6 available ($69.99)

BACK IN STOCK… (items we’ve carried in the past that have just arrived again)

Bourbon and Rye

Old Potrero Single Malt 18th Century Style Whiskey 750ml – 2 available ($69.99)
The fascinating spirit represents Anchor Brewing Company’s attempt to re-create the original whiskey of America. This release was distilled in a small copper pot still at Anchor’s distillery on San Francisco’s Potrero Hill, from a mash of 100% rye malt. Rye was the grain of choice for America’s first distillers, and using a mash of 100% rye malt produces a uniquely American whiskey. Aging in handmade oak barrels–lightly toasted in the traditional manner–imparts a wonderfully subtle flavor to this 18th-century-style American whiskey. (In the 18th century, barrels were made by heating the staves over a fire of oak chips, allowing them to be bent and formed into a barrel shape. During this process, the inside of the barrel would become toasted–but not charred.) For aging, Anchor chose several uncharred oak barrels–both new and used–to achieve the balanced complexity that complements this whiskey’s unique heritage.

Scotland – Blended Scotch

Black Bottle Blended Islay Scotch Whisky 750ml – 11 available ($19.99)
Black Bottle is the staff favorite for a peaty style blended whisky. Seven Islay distilleries all in one bottle, how can you go wrong and for this oustanding price! In 1879 Gordon Graham of Aberdeenshire created Black Bottle whisky for his own pleasure. It almost immediately changed his life. Not only did he now have a splendid blend to enjoy in his evenings, it was so outstanding that he became famous throughout his village, and then Scotland. He soon abandoned his regular tea making and blending business to concentrate on fine whisky. Black Bottle is a unique and accessible tribute to the much-revered Islay malts bustling within it. Smooth, bold and balanced, it is uncompromising and flexes its rich credentials at every sip. And its muscular physique hasn’t gone unnoticed: Black Bottle has been described as having a “quite brilliant array of Islay-iodine and smoke notes”, in Jim Murray’s Classic, Blended Whisky. Color: Rich gold Nose: Warm, smoky and peaty Body: Clean and round with profiles that marry the nose. Finish: Intense Peatiness – 5 Sweetness – 7

Johnnie Walker Gold 18 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky 750ml ($75.99)
93 points Wine Enthusiast: “This amber blend of 15 whiskies, each aged at least 18 years, yields a mellow, balanced mix of sweet caramel, raisin and smoky notes, all lingering and pleasing.” (09/2011) Whisky Advocate: “An example that older, more expensive isn’t always better, this 18 year old gem is as good as many blends twice its price. The foundation of Johnnie Walker Gold is delicate, clean, and honeyed, along with a fresh sea character (from Clynelish?) that provides a youthful zing. Notes of vanilla, shortbread, tropical fruit, freshly cut hay, marshmallow, and even a hit of peat, round out the palate. Its finish is subtly complex and nicely balanced. The blend has improved nicely over the past several years. (Vol. 15, #2)”

 Scotland – Single Malt Scotch

Tobermory 15 year old Unfiltered Island Single Malt Whisky 750ml – 6 available ($129.99)
Tobermory 15 Year has the prestigious distinction of being the only single malt ditillery on the Isle of Mull, 70 miles north of Islay on Scotland’s west coast. The name Tobermory is a Gaelic word meaning “well of Mary.” The distillery was built in 1798 in an area known as “Ledaig” (pronounced “Lechig”) which means “safe heaven.” This new release is produced from Scottish unpeated malted barley, un-chill filtered, natural colour and 46.3% alc/vol. 90-95 points and Highly Recommended Wine Enthusiast: “Fragrances of butterscotch, brown butter, toffee, dried pears and apple, as well as salt and old oak notes. Palate entry is toffee and butterscotch laden; midpalate is concentrated, toasty, buttermilk-like and full-weighted. Ends up heavily in the marzipan/light caramel/toffee “sweet zone” which, while not for everyone, works for me.” (12/09)

United States – Bourbon and Rye

Michter’s 10 Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon 750ml – 5 available ($89.99)

The Bunnahabhain 40yo is a one-off release of 750 individually numbered, hand signed bottles presented in bespoke packaging. Palate – A rich and complex balance of heather honey, ginger chocolate and sweet fruits.
Finish – Teasingly long with lightly spicy nutty notes and a hint of sea salt. 41.7% vol. Un-chillfiltered

K&L California – 1982 Port Ellen 30 Year Old “K&L Exclusive” Sovereign Single Barrel Cask Strength – Scotch Whisky News

• 1982 Port Ellen 30 Year Old “K&L Exclusive” Sovereign Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml (Pre-Arrival) ($599.99)
Whoever said that persistence pays off was so freakin’ right. The only reason we ever got a hold of this baby was that we’ve built some great relationships in Scotland. So when we asked at Sovereign, again, eyebrows raised, “Do you have anything you could offer us?” They offered. We tasted. We loved. They bottled. And it’s a true glory. The nose shows soft, earthy peat and struck match igniting pipe tobacco. The palate is all weathered leather tempered by sweet, mellowing dark wood. This long and powerful malt turns the phenols back up to 11 for a spicy, peaty finish. We’re not sure we’ll see another one of these. Diageo has been buying the few remaining casks back from bottlers well above market price for their 12th annual Port Ellen release, which retails for over $1,000. They bottled nearly 3,000 of those; there will only be 150 of ours. (David Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer)

Black Dirt Bourbon

Three year old Black Dirt Bourbon takes its name from the dark, fertile soil left by an ancient glacial lake that once covered Thousands of acres in upstate New York. Perfectly suited for growing crops such as corn, this Black Dirt has never been used for Bourbon production – until now. Hand-crafted in Warwick, NY. Our Price: $40

Brenne ~ French Single Malt Whisky

Brenne starts in new Limousin oak barrels before being finished in Cognac casks, giving Brenne a hint of perfumed fruit that sets it apart from other whiskies. Each bottle of Brenne comes from a single barrel selected at its peak. They don’t blend barrels. Using cool fermentation and small batch production, Brenne is twice distilled in copper alembic stills for a smoother finish. Brenne also uses 100% organic barley grown and harvested by their third generation distiller. Bottled at 40% abv (80 proof) Our Price: $56

Lost Spirits: Leviathan 1 Bourbon

Lost Spirits is a small distillery dedicated to making expressive whiskey – inspired by Islay. In making whiskey, they bottle at cask strength, release only single cask bottlings, and do not chill-filter. At 110 ppm, Leviathan I is by far the most heavily peated whiskey ever made outside Islay. The Late Harvest Cabernet casks used to mature Leviathan I came from a spectacular family winery located on the Silverado trail in Napa. The botrysed dessert wine was soaked into the walls of the French oak before they added the new make whiskey. The wine soaked wood intensifies the chocolate notes from the peat and sweetens the fruity/caramel opening of the distillate. The French oak adds just a touch of spice to the mix. Each release is bottled at cask strength so you can experience them as nature intended (usually between 54 – 57%). Our Price: $58

Hillrock: Solera-Aged Bourbon
(Estate Barrel #1)

Hillrock Estate Distillery is located in the heart of the historic Hudson Valley, two hours north of New York City, overlooking the distant Berkshire Mountains. Prime farmland, crystal clear water, and a favorable climate create a unique terroir which is profoundly expressed in Hillrock’s artisanal whiskey. Proud to be one of the few “field-to-glass” whiskey producers in the world, Hillrock is also the first U.S. distillery since before Prohibition to floor malt and hand craft whiskey on site from estate-grown grain. Led by Owner Jeffrey Baker and renowned Master Distiller Dave Pickerell, Hillrock’s commitment to quality embodies the rich history of craft distilling in the Hudson Valley. Tasting Notes for the world’s first Solera Aged Bourbon:

COLOR: Golden Amber

NOSE: Sweet caramel and vanilla, floral and fruity notes,
oak, spice (slight cinnamon notes)

TASTE: Sweet, yet slightly spicy. Full bodied. Warm with maple syrup, brown sugar, molasses, rock candy and toffee. Spicy notes include clove and cinnamon. Well balanced with roasted corn, toast and raisin. The sherry nose and taste are in perfect balance.

FINISH : Medium to long warm finish with sweet caramel and butterscotch. Characteristic Oloroso sherry flavors of walnut, fig and candied fruit balance the spicy rye undertones.

Our Price: $82

The story goes like this~ “John E. Fitzgerald’s weakness was fine Bourbon and he faced temptation every day. As a treasury agent with the only set of keys to the rickhouses, taking from barrels was easy. But, he didn’t just take from any barrels, he took from the best barrels. Some say he was a thief. Others claim he was a man of great taste. This is the legend of Larceny. Unlock the smoothness and decide for yourself.” Bottled by Old Fitzgerald – from Heaven Hill Larceny Bourbon continues the Old Fitzgerald tradition of using wheat in place of rye as the third or “small” grain in the whiskey’s grain recipe, or mashbill as it is commonly known. The use of winter wheat replaces the spicier, fruitier flavor notes that rye provides with a softer, rounder character that is the hallmark of Old Fitzgerald & other “wheated” Bourbons such as Maker’s Mark & the Van Winkle line. Hochstadter’s “Slow and Low”
~ Rock & Rye ~

Rock and Rye is almost as old as the country it was born in and its history is just as vast and curious. Its humble beginnings can be traced back to the saloons of the burgeoning nation, where stern-faced bar-keeps would pour a shot of rye and let the customers add their own rock candy, thereby creating a drink similar to the granddaddy of all cocktails: the Old Fashioned.  As a pharmaceutical drink, it was used to snuff coughs, colds, sore throats, bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia and many other ailments. Later, as men reacquired a taste for it and began drinking it for pleasure again, it became an American standard, prepared and bottled by distillers and bootleggers alike as it migrated back from the pharmacy to the bar.
Slow and Low was inspired by the original Hochstadter’s Rock and Rye recipe and a few other 19th century recipes we happened to unearth. It’s made strong; using the best aged whiskey and matured slowly. Our exclusive 6 Year-Old Straight Rye Whiskey is then macerated to perfection with three citrus peels: lemon, grapefruit and orange, pure cane rock candy, honey and a hint of horehound. (From the Hochstadter’s website.) Our Price: $31
