The worlds most heavily peated whisky. This is the 6th edition of the uber-experimental cult Octomore.
Titanic amounts of peat but with a light, delicate complexity and a beguiling finesse.
Magnificently muscular.
As the spirit breathes in the glass a subtle change takes place. Rising steadily comes the crisp, malted barley then the sweet oak, giving notes of vanilla toasted rye bread and walnuts. Add a burst of fresh lime, poached apple and pear from distillation whilst always in the background the steady rhythm of the sea painting pictures in your mind of a people and place who know that single malt is the stuff of life, sustaining them for generations.

Tasting notes
Rich and honeyed aromas with golden syrup and dried apricots followed by melon, mango and a dry, crisp apple note. It has a soft creamy texture and flavours of marshmallow and candied lemons then finishing with a distinctive ash and smoke note complimenting the fruits and adding a bit of spice. The nose glides from paint to sensual exotic fruits (cherry, mango, blackcurrant, jelly beans) plus toffee and geranium; more perfumed and herbal with water. The palate boasts espresso dregs, tobacco, cinnamon, orange, perfume, leather and waxed jackets.

Beeswax, tangerines, eucalyptus and cardamom on the nose. The taste is sugar on caraway bread and waxy like candle dipping just before Christmas. With water, pancakes with maple syrup and eggs sunny-side up. The taste now velvety, orange and vanilla oil, nut brittle and cornbread.

14 years old; refill sherry gorda; 57.9%abv
Creme brulee, mandarin fondant chocolates, Russian caramels; satin and velvet swags, soft leather and polished furniture, faded roses. A sweet taste with Chocolate Creams and champagne truffles; a hint of sulphur with water, and a fizzy effect on the tongue.
Cask No. 4.171 Perfumed and sultry
21 years old; refill bourbon hogshead; 53.7%abv
We were transported to an Irish lochside with pebbles, seaweed and a fresh salty breeze. The taste enhanced the seaweed with salt flakes, ash flecks and masses of umami. A most savoury dram! Water released lemon sponge and vanilla and the palate became sweet, drying, fresh and interesting.
Cask No. 29.129 Leather and lime in a smoky room
22 years old; refill sherry butt; 55.1%abv
In a musky room a smoking jacket drapes over a leather armchair by an open fire. Cigar smoke lingers with smoked mackerel skins. The palate is ashy with tobacco but balanced with lime marmalade. Nutty and peppery with sweet smoke when water is added.

Tasting Notes
The colour of sparkling gold with a nose of burning peat fire with warm vanilla and hints of orange rose petals. Light bodies but with a palate of intense peat followed by ash from the fireplace with liquorice root and fresh black pepper leaving a clean palate with a hint of lingering peat smoke.

MacLean’s Tasting notes: Summer gold in colour. A spicy nose, with vanilla and seaweed, planed oak, iodine and tarred hessian rope – backed by peat smoke. The taste is very sweet to start, with traces of salt and vinegar, and tarry smoke in the finish.
Something old, something new
It’s rare for Scottish distilleries to use new rather than re-fill casks. So with Laphroaig QA Cask – a bottling exclusive to Duty Free stores – you’re in for an uncommonly fine treat. With ‘QA’ signifying for Quercus alba (white oak), the name acknowledges that this whisky has been re-racked from ex-Bourbon into fresh American oak casks for the final months of its maturation. As the active tannins and compounds in new wood can quickly dominate, the duration of this final part of the process is critical. But it’s one Laphroiag has perfected; adding an extra flavour dimension of vanilla and spice to their famously robust spirit.

SPECIALITY DRINKS LTD RELEASE GLENFARCLAS 1953 TO COMMEMORATE THE QUEEN’S CORONATION
Speciality Drinks Ltd will launch their latest bottling today. A very special crystal decanter filled with a single cask 1953 vintage Glenfarclas Single Malt Whisky, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne upon the death of her father, King George VI, on 6th February 1952, and was proclaimed Queen shortly thereafter. As tradition dictated that an appropriate period of mourning should be observed for the preceding sovereign, the coronation was held more than a year later on 2nd June 1953.
To commemorate the 60th anniversary of this historic occasion, we are proud to introduce The Coronation Decanter. With just 60 specially commissioned crystal decanters being released, this is an exceptional, exclusive bottling that reflects the importance of The Queen’s Coronation.
The outstanding whisky has been matured in a single sherry butt at the distillery in Ballindalloch for almost six full decades and has been bottled at its natural strength. Only the natural elements of air, wood and time have influenced the development of its magnificent flavour profile.
Connoisseurs of fine whisky will recognise the rarity of any single malt reaching such a great age; for the whisky to still be in such amazing condition is little short of miraculous. This remarkable sherry cask has yielded a whisky of unsurpassed quality, with an exquisitely refined array of rich and complex flavours.
Tasting notes:
Nose – At first concentrated dark fruit, macadamia nuts and orange liqueur. Baked apples and raisins develop in the glass for a more subtle style of whisky, while shiitake mushrooms, autumn leaves and sandalwood add a wonderful savoury aspect. Spiced cake and dried fruit provide a balancing sweetness.
Palate – An initial launch into clove studded oranges and mulled wine, with fragrant arabica coffee, dark chocolate and umami. The flavours then lighten and lead towards an explosion of fruit – ripe mango and guava are balanced by grapefruit and juicy mandarin. Behind this, gentle honey sweetness and barley sugar combine with ground nutmeg and cinnamon to give a complex and rounded body. Given time, tarragon and cedar wood compliment leafy mint and cooked blackberries.
Finish – Soft orchard fruit and bread pudding linger on the palate, with touches of hazelnut, fresh mint and citrus juice leaving you ready for another sip.
