The Whisky Shop “Be the first to try The Laphroaig Lore” – Scotch Whisky News
Be the first to try the Laphroaig Lore
Introducing the new and delicious Laphroaig Lore. Created by John Campbell (The Laphroaig distillery manager), Laphroaig Lore is billed the richest ever Laphroaig. Lore: meaning the passing of a skill or tradition through word of mouth..
Rich and deep with distinctive smoke, peat and seaside minerality – this expression is unmistakably Laphroaig. This is a result of liquid being drawn from a selection of casks including first fill sherry butts, smaller quarter casks and their most precious stock capturing the timeless passion and very essence of the Laphroaig Distillery..
Laphroaig 25 year old
Laphroaig 25 Year Old is a wonderful marriage of sherried, oaky flavours from the European Oloroso Sherry Casks and the soft, velvet rich flavours from the ex-American Bourbon Barrels. The Oloroso Sherry Casks and ex-American Bourbon Barrels were filled with newly distilled Laphroaig spirit from day one. Bottled at Cask Strength this rare classic is getting harder to find. Available while stocks last!
Laphroaig 10 Year Old Douglas of Drumlanrig
This Douglas of Drumlanrig Laphroaig 10 year old was distilled in September 2004 and bottled in March 2015. Limited to only 395 bottles. Very pale in colour: almost tarnished silver. The nose is natural (sea-breeze), maritime (seaweed, iodine), medicinal (carbolic, coal tar, public swimming bath) and lightly smoky (charred sticks); the taste surprisingly sweet, salty and big-time smoky in the finish. Surprisingly spicy for its strength. Water flattens the flavour considerably.
NEW AND LIMITED FROM LAGAVULIN AT THE WHISKY SHOP – Scotch Whisky News
NEW AND LIMITED FROM LAGAVULIN
LAGAVULIN 8 YEAR OLD 200TH ANNIVERSARY LIMITED EDITION
2016 marks the 200th anniversary of one of whiskies most loved distilleries – Lagavulin. To celebrate this remarkable milestone Lagavulin have launched a delightful limited edition expression which is now available to order with The Whisky Shop. Inspired by a visit to the distillery 200 years ago by the world famous Alfred Barnard who fell in love with the 8 year Lagavulin all those years ago. Matured using a combination of European and American Oak casks and bottled at 48% volume, Available while stocks last.
LAGAVULIN 12 YEAR OLD 2015 LIMITED RELEASE
A limited edition, natural cask strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Lagavulin – the 15th in the series, limited to a few thousand bottles worldwide! An expressive, energetic and self-assured Lagavulin with a straightforward aroma and a direct, full-on Islay flavour: classic, pleasantly relaxed and cleanly structured with a fine balance of cereal sweetness, appetising sharpness and dry, volcanic smoke, all adroitly set off by citrus and mint.
LAGAVULIN DISTILLERS EDITION
Each Lagavulin Distillers Edition expression undergoes a second, or double, maturation in casks that have previously held a fortified wine. This is the 1997 vintage, which used Pedro Ximinez sherry casks for the second maturation period. A really distinctive and distinguished dram, full of peat while the Pedro Ximinez sherry wood naturally has a big say; A more mellow Lagavulin, not quite as deep or intensely flavoured as the 16 year old.
LAGAVULIN 16 YEAR OLD
An Islay Malt, this is from one of Scotland’s ‘essential’ distilleries, on a cramped, chaotic, wildly romantic site. Demand heavily exceeds supply. The intense character comes from their own richly peaty water supply; the heavily peated barley; the unusually long fermentation – up to 75 hours; and the slowest distillation of any Islay malt.
The Whisky Exchange “Corsair – southern style” – American Whiskey News
Corsair – southern style
‘If it has been done before, we are not interested in doing it.’ An apt motto when you learn that it comes from Corsair, the US-based distiller that has turned more than a few heads with its unconventional releases using diverse ingredients such as pumpkin, quinoa and vanilla beans.
Based across two sites – one in Nashville, Tennessee and the other further north in Bowling Green, Kentucky – Corsair was founded by childhood friends Darek Bell (a graduate of the now-defunct Bruichladdich Distilling Academy) and Andrew Webber. They began by brewing their own beer and making their own wine, and after running into problems while working on a biodiesel plant, they changed course and decided to create spirits instead.
We tried a good selection of Corsair spirits recently; this is what we thought:
OLD PUNK, 46% ABV
Nose: Rich, rooty sweetness from the pumpkin, plus tempting aromas of carrot cake, then clean, pure notes of ripe pears.
Palate: Very clean, bright fruit, with more ripe pears, plus squeaky-clean grapefruit citrus and subtle spicing of black pepper and clove.
Finish: Clean and fruity.
SMALL BATCH TRIPLE SMOKE SINGLE MALT WHISKEY, 40% ABV
Nose: Rich, deep and dark, with aromas of stewed fruits and cherry compote. Heavier notes of dark chocolate, mocha and damp earth rise from the glass.
Palate: Smooth mouthfeel with cherry-liqueur and Black Forest gateau notes. No sharp edges, although soft smoke arrives late on.
Finish: The rich dark fruit lingers, then the peppery smoke takes hold.
RYEMAGEDDON RYE WHISKEY, 46% ABV
Nose: Appealing spicy aromas, with cinnamon-infused dark chocolate, nutmeg, malt and toasty oak. There’s some juicy fruit in there, too – cherries and orange peel.
Palate: Rich, dark chocolate cake laced with fennel and caraway seeds, joined by Christmas-cake spices: cinnamon and nutmeg.
Finish: Rich and spicy.
QUINOA WHISKEY, 46% ABV
Nose: Strong emphasis on nutty spiciness – cracked black pepper, caraway seeds – as well as red fruits, dry straw and honey.
Palate: Simple, well-defined flavours of roasted nuts, black pepper and honeyed fruit. Clean, with a pleasing texture.
Finish: The toasty, honeyed fruit lingers.
This was my first taste of Corsair’s spirits, and it was a fascinating trip through all manner of flavours. My favourites were the Triple Smoke and the Ryemaggedon – both big, brooding beasts that delivered plenty of rich, spicy fruit. Keep an eye out for more Corsair bottlings on The Whisky Exchange website!
Rare Whiskeis at Loch Fyne Whiskies – Scotch Whisky News
This expression represents the third generation of the Grants of Glenfarclas and is the latest addition to this special collector’s series. The Glenfarclas 50 Year Old has been matured in typical Glenfarclas style – predominantly using ex-Oloroso Sherry Casks, producing 937 bottles to be sold worldwide. A non-chill filtered bottling at 41.1%.
The rich, ruby whisky distinguishes this as a classic Macallan, and it is the interaction of spirit and wood which delivers this vibrant colour. It has been crafted only from sherry seasoned Spanish oak casks, which are amongst the most precious and scarce in single malt whisky. The intensity of Rare Cask’s character was developed by The Macallan’s Master Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgemo.
A unique blended malt containing whisky from two closed distilleries, Inverleven and Ladyburn, which were mothballed in 1991 and 1975 respectively. This is the first release of the series from William Grant & Sons, and this particular expression is unrepeatable making it extremely rare.
Gordon & MacPhail Scapa 2001at Abbey Whisky – Scotch Whisky News
Scapa 2001 / Bot. 2016
A 2001 vintage Scapa, filled from cask in 2016 by Independent bottlers Gordon & MacPhail. Previous bottlings have been very good, expecting more of the same from this release, bottled at 43% vol.
The New Lagavulin 8 Year Old – Now Available To Order at Loch Fyne Whiskies – Scotch Whisky News
Lagavulin 8 year old 200th Anniversary Limited Release
200 years ago Lagavulin began legal distillation. Fast forward to 2016 and the world renowned distillery is still producing whisky of the highest standard. In the 1880’s Alfred Bernard tasted and fell in love with a remarkable 8 year old whisky which he described as “exceptionally fine”.
