Laphroaig Launches Exquisite New Single Malt – Laphroaig Lore. “The richest of the rich” – Scotch Whisky News

Laphroaig launches exquisite new single malt – Laphroaig Lore.

“The richest of the rich”

Tuesday 22 March 2016: To celebrate a legacy of producing the world’s most richly flavoured single malt, Laphroaig announces the highly-anticipated launch of Laphroaig Lore, known as the richest of the rich.

Lore

A body of traditions and knowledge on a subject or held by a particular group, typically passed from person to person by word of mouth.

Distributed by Maxxium UK and crafted by Laphroaig Distillery Manager John Campbell, Laphroaig Lore is drawn from a variety of casks including first-fill Bourbon barrels, quarter casks and Oloroso Sherry hogsheads to create a unique richness.

As the name suggests, this new expression is inspired by traditions and tales passed down from generation to generation of Laphroaig’s Distillery Managers since 1815.

Legend has it the Laphroaig lore began around 1800 when brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston invented and crafted a recipe for an extraordinarily rich single malt, even before the Laphroaig distillery officially existed in 1815. The recipe was further developed and refined in the 1920s by Laphroaig Distillery Manager, Ian Hunter, who pioneered the use of ex-Bourbon casks. Further chapters were added by the 20th century’s only female Scotch whisky distiller, Bessie Williamson, and by luminaries such as Iain Henderson.

Campbell comments: “Over the generations, distillery managers like me have made their own contributions to the quality and character of Laphroaig. From the founding of Laphroaig, these custodians have each made their own mark, whether it was drying the malting barley at lower temperatures than most, using two sizes of spirit still, pioneering the use of ex-Bourbon barrels, or reintroducing the quarter cask to Scotch whisky-making. Each of these decisions have made Laphroaig the unique, premium whisky it is today. We make the whisky we make because of what has been passed on down to us.”

Campbell adds: “Laphroaig Lore is the story of Laphroaig itself. It’s a massive whisky, as bold as it is deep, and one that I sincerely hope does justice to the many generations of Laphroaig distillery managers. It’s our story, bottled, the richest of the rich.”

Tasting notes:

COLOUR: Deep mahogany.

NOSE: Rich and smoky with seaside minerals and a hint of ash and bitter chocolate drops. Vanilla follows with oily unroasted chestnuts and a hint of fudge with a malty sweetness. A drop of water adds a creamy clotted cream note with fruit appearing in the form of unripe citrus in a flan glaze.

PALATE: Richly peaty with a spicy chilli bite.

FINISH: Short dry finish and a long sweet aftertaste.

This finest of Scotch whiskies is bottled at 48% ABV and will be available in luxury retailers and whisky specialists including Hedonism and The Whisky Exchange from 22nd March 2016 (700ml) priced at £85 (RRP).

Notes:

  • Laphroaig is the No.1 selling Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky globally
  • Unmistakably peat-smoke flavours are delivered by burning local Islay peat, containing unique traces of sea-weed and heather.
  • One of only a few distilleries that still uses traditional malting floors and dries and infuses its own malt with the thick blue smoke from old peat-fired kilns.
  • The Friends of Laphroaig programme keeps fans of the brand up to date with special offers and news from distillery manager, John Campbell. On signing up, members are allocated their own square foot of land on Is-lay, and their names are added to the members’ book in the friends lounge at the distillery. Members who visit the distillery are invited to collect their ‘rent’ – a dram of Laphroaig. The community comprises more than 700,000 like-minded Scotch fans.

HIGH WEST RELEASES DISTILLERY EXCLUSIVE 14-YEAR LIGHT WHISKEY – American Whiskey News

AA Highwest

HIGH WEST RELEASES DISTILLERY EXCLUSIVE 14-YEAR LIGHT WHISKEY

Don’t Be Fooled by the Name—This Limited Edition is No Lightweight

PARK CITY, Utah (March 17, 2016) — Come see the light! High West Distillery, Utah’s first legal distillery since 1870, releases a limited edition 14-Year Light Whiskey. Beginning March 19, this special bottling is available exclusively to visitors at the High West Distillery at Blue Sky Ranch, followed by a roll out at the High West Saloon & Distillery in historic Old Town Park City on April 16.

“At High West, we believe education leads to appreciation so we wanted to shed some light on this rarely discussed type of whiskey,” says High West founder David Perkins. “This is a spirit that’s not likely to be available again for a long time.”

Light whiskey denotes a grain spirit that’s been distilled at a higher proof than a straight whiskey — between 80-95% alcohol by volume (ABV) versus less than 80% ABV respectively. It’s typically used as a component in about 95% of the world’s blended whiskeys. In the U.K., what they call grain whiskey is essentially the same thing as light whiskey.

“This whiskey was distilled at a higher proof on the still, which reduces the heaviness of the flavors, and reveals more floral and fruit subtleties,” said High West master distiller Brendan Coyle. “It was aged in used barrels, as opposed to first-use charred barrels, which lends more elegant complexities with a spirit-forward character.”

High West discovered 100 stunning barrels of light whiskey at MGP made from corn that was distilled between 1999 and 2001, aged in second-fill barrels. That wood aging imparted a traditionally light spirit with lovely vanilla and white chocolate notes, and an intriguing Concord grape overlay—to anything but typical results.

High West encourages you to indulge in this special offering all on its own—neat, with a touch of water, or on the rocks. The 14-Year Light Whiskey will retail for $99.95.

BenRiach is Delighted to Launch The Very First Edition of its New Cask Strength Release – Scotch Whisky News

AA BenRiach Cask Strength Batch 1

BenRiach is today (17 March 2016) delighted to launch the very first edition of its new Cask Strength release.

Like the critically-acclaimed GlenDronach Cask Strength batches which have been eagerly snapped up by whisky enthusiasts worldwide, BenRiach plans to regularly release new batches from its award-winning Elgin distillery.

The whisky chosen for Batch 1 is classic BenRiach in style. You will be treated to a voluptuous sweet taste of honey, soft fruits and gentle spices – but at a cask strength of 57.2% ABV, it packs a real punch!

Master Blender Billy Walker’s tasting notes show that the whisky chosen as the Batch 1 Cask Strength is absolutely outstanding.

Colour

Gleaming harvest gold with a burnished copper edge.

Nose

Sweet toasted oak spices are interwoven with roasted orchard fruits and dusted with cracked barley. Black vanilla pods, desiccated coconut and a gentle floral note add complexity to the ripe, fruit-laden nose.

Palate

An excellent example of the delicious BenRiach character. Creamy heather honey pours over a medley of apples, pears and apricots. Subtle notes of candied peel and fresh ginger give a delicate warmth and lead to a classic combination of vanilla, toasted coconut and sweet barley in the luscious, velvety finish.

Sales Director Alistair Walker said: “Cask Strength Batch 1 is another momentous and exciting “first” for the BenRiach distillery.

“This stunning Speyside whisky, with all its classic BenRiach characteristics, is the first Cask Strength expression to be added to our core range, allowing us to showcase the true BenRiach style in its most natural state – straight from the cask to the bottle, non-chill filtered and at its natural colour, allowing the distillery’s unique spirit to shine through.

“It is an incredibly fine dram and I am confident it will prove as successful as our wonderful GlenDronach batches.”

The BenRiach Cask Strength Batch 1 is available from specialist whisky retailers soon.

Keep an eye on our website (www.benriachdistillery.co.uk) and Facebook pages over the coming weeks for more information on the BenRiach Cask Strength Batch 1, tasting notes and exclusive product photography.

K&L Exclusive 13-Year Old Irish Whiskey – Irish Whiskey News

KL-emailheader

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day comes a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! Our buyers located the sister cask to one of the most highly-rated Irish whiskies in modern history—a Madeira-finished, cask strength delight that highlights all of the soft vanilla and easy-drinking character that makes Irish whisky such a wonderful spirit. 380 bottles were captured from this wonder of a barrel, all exclusively bottled for K&L. You could drink a glass of Jameson to celebrate the occasion, or you could show up to the party with this bespoke bottle from the Exclusive Malts – easily the most dynamic Irish whisky selection on our shelf.

AA KL Irish

2002 Irish Malt Whiskey 13 Year Old K&L Exclusive “Exclusive Malt” Single Madeira Cask #20024 Strength Irish Whiskey (750ml) ($129.99)

Here is a fun one from our friends at the Creative Whisky Company. They made waves last year by bottling a single barrel of Irish Malt at full strength and 13 years of age. While those details are unusual without a doubt, what shocked the whiskey world was that very humble cask (#20012) received a WHOPPING 96 points from the Whiskey Advocate. While we’ve become accustomed to seeing high scores in the wine world, this type of score is reserved at WA for the most special offerings and is never doled out lightly. The list of whiskies scoring above 95 points is short and reads like a list of legends. Needless to say we were sad to only acquire a few bottles of that spectacular whiskey. Luckily our good name and strong ties put us first in line when Mr. Stirk offered up a sister cask for sale in its entirety. This special cask #20024 is unique, yet very reminiscent of that special beauty. The third fill Madeira casks has still done wonders to the this already spectacular malt. This is bottled at full strength and only 380 bottles were made despite the large size of the cask.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 16, 2016

This is a massive score for K&L and our first cask strength Irish Single Cask Single Malt that we’ve ever bottled exclusively. This special whiskey was distilled at the exceptional Cooley distillery now owner by Jim Beam and is truly one of a kind. Last year, a bottling from this lot was named the top bottling in Whisky Advocates Fall issue. That whisky, garnering an astounding 96 points, disappeared almost instantly. This one will last a little long, but not by much. The subtle influence from the refill Madeira cask has added incredible depth and complexity, but also a wonderful liveliness not typical for Cooley. Expect vibrant green apples, salted oats, galangal sizzling in a hot wok, nutty richness, and the finest floral honey. Slightly deeper and more saline than its sister, the palate has a rush of sweetness before opening to a long, candied apple finish. Absolutely spectacular! This is top tier Irish malt is one of the best the Emerald Isle has ever sent our way.

Andrew Stevens | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: February 27, 2016

Wow, this is simply a stunning whiskey that David has procured for us. Clean, light, and bright, there is a wonderful core of apple, dried fruit, and lemongrass with hints of soft vanilla and spice. Super elegant, this whiskey still manages to show a good complexity and has medium heat on the finish. Everyone who I have spoken to who tried it has enjoyed it, as did I.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: February 29, 2016

This has beautiful, expressive aromas with seductive sweet floral and fruity notes. In the mouth it is soft and delicate, with the fruit flavors dominating. There is a nice long finish.

Port Ellen 1980 Rare Old (2015) by Gordon & MacPhail at the Whisky Barrel – Scotch Whisky News

AA port-ellen-1980-rare-old

Port Ellen 1980 Rare Old (2015)

Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Port Ellen 1980 Rare Old Islay single malt Scotch whisky. Lot #RO15/12 bottled 2015 by Gordon & MacPhail for the Rare Old series. 236 bottles. Nose: Smoky and liquorice influences with fruity undertones and hints of pear. A fresh sea breeze aroma.Taste: Sweet, with peat smoke elements emerging followed by hints of aniseed. Some hints of kippers linger.Port Ellen Distillery was established by Alexander K. Mackay on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay at Port Ellen in 1825. Port Ellen was a malt whisky distillery but closed in 1983 and whilst the distillery buildings remain Port Ellen drum maltings occupy part of the site and participates in Feis Ile, the annual Islay Festival of Malt and Music. Most recent official bottling of Port Ellen single malt whisky was the Port Ellen 11thRelease. During the winter of 1823-24 James Fox tested his newly designed spirit safe at Port Ellen Distillery prior to its introduction in all Scottish licenced distilleries by 1825 in order to comply with enactment of the Excise Act of 1823. Thus Port Ellen Distillery was the first Scottish distillery to install a spirit safe and James Fox was paid £428 for his work.
