K&L Direct Import Feature: Hepburn’s Choice Single Malt Scotch Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

K&L Direct Import Feature: Hepburn’s Choice Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Now that we’re into September and there’s the slightest semblance of Fall in the air, we can start thinking about peat; specifically Islay whisky. After spending the last month and a half getting you acquainted with some of our lighter, easy-drinking, and substantially well-priced Highland offerings, our palates are now craving something different. As the leaves start to change color and the evenings begin just a bit earlier, that heartier, smokier, unique Islay character becomes all the more desirable. It entices our imaginations: a roaring fire, the cold night outside, a glass of Scotch in hand to sip as we spend more time in doors.

aa-kldrirect2

Now that we’re transitioning into that mindset, it’s time to show you our first two peated Islay selections from Whisky Season 2016, still very much value-driven as has been the case with all our offerings thus far. A young Caol Ila, this time from a sherry hogshead, that offers punch as well as precision. A dark and heady Bowmore that reminds us of how rich and quintessential the iconic distillery’s character truly is.

2009 Caol Ila 6 Year Old “Hepburn’s Choice” Single Sherry Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($49.99)

On the strength of the previously popular young, peated whiskies we’ve been importing, we went back to the well again this year. This time, however, we asked the folks from Hepburn if they had any of that same fiery Caol Ila aged in sherry cask. Luckily they did and it’s that little highlight of sweetness that makes all the difference between this year’s selection and older editions. The classic elements of Islay are at play, of course: smoke, peat, earth and sea salt, but they’re accented by a richness from the sherry. There’s a nice little coating of cakebread and cocoa around that core of Caol Ila, rounding the edges and tempering the bold 58.9% cask strength character just the slightest bit. The best part, however, is the price. We managed to keep the cost right at $49.99, despite the extra year in barrel and the added bonus of the sherry. For the money, you’d be hard pressed to find a more potent Islay value anywhere.

A beautiful cask of Caol Ila . The thing that I think sets this cask apart is the balance between all of the different flavors. In the nose there are light smoke aromas. In the mouth it is bright , creamy and complex, with a light peat influence. It is easy to drink and has a wonderful long finish with all of the flavor profiles working together.

David Driscoll | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: September 17, 2016

Young peated whisky is the new hot thing around these parts. In the case of this precocious Caol Ila 6 year, imagine the best parts of the Kilchoman sherry-finished whiskies, but at full proof and half the price! I’m hoping folks don’t sleep on this one because I’m imagining hoards of customers coming back, looking for a second bottle, only to be dismayed by its limited quantities.

Andrew Stevens | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: September 17, 2016

Not too long ago we brought in a Caol Ila 5 year from Hepburn and I thought it was good and fun for a young Scotch. I was expecting much the same when I went to taste the new young Caol Ila David bought this trip and was astounded by how much more I enjoyed it. Something about that extra year, or more likely the sherry hogshead it was aged in, added a complexity and helped this whiskey truly come together. Like the 5 year this beautiful bottle has light dense fruit with plenty of peat and iodine, however, the mid-palate is balanced and all of the parts work together. This is still a very young smoky and peaty Scotch, but it is worth getting into.

2001 Bowmore 14 Year Old “Hepburn’s Choice” Single Sherry Butt Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) ($82.99)

While Bowmore seems to play second (or even fourth) fiddle to the Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig selections on our shelf, we’ve always been enamored with Islay’s most historic distillery. We’ve never let popular whisky culture or changes in the portfolio diminish the fact that Bowmore tastes pretty damn good in a number of iterations. While tasting through single-cask selections this year, we found a 14-year-old sherry butt that was so dark and so soft we couldn’t pass it up. The best part about this particular expression was the texture; it mirrored the most popular Bowmore edition we sell: the 15-year-old “Darkest,” albeit at full proof and from one concentrated cask (and despite the fact this was supposedly a “refill” barrel). The flavors are dark and rich, brooding and slow-moving over the palate. Dark chocolate accented by a beach bonfire oozes over the tongue, buoyed by toasted almonds and earthy peat. The nice part about sherry butts is that they hold more whisky! In the case of this 14-year-old Bowmore, we figured we were going to need every drop. We expect this to be one of the most popular K&L casks of the fall season; while it lasts, of course.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: September 18, 2016

The color of this wonderful cask is a dark brown reflecting the sherry barrel aging. In the nose there are inviting light smoke aromas. In the mouth it is rich and round, showing the influence of the sherry. The sherry barrel did not make this Bowmore overly sweet but added complexity and helps make this single malt so good and easy to enjoy . There is a nice long finish.

An absolutely delicious smoky whisky that should please any fan of the genre. This has everything: smoke, peat, sherry, campfire, earth, chocolate, toffee, and even a nuttiness that finishes with poise and presence. I’ll be recommending this to everyone looking for something beyond Lagavulin 16.

Unique sea journey recalls bravery of single malt’s earliest distillers – Scotch Whisky News

Unique sea journey recalls bravery of single malt’s earliest distillers

Atlantic row marks finale of the world’s most daring whisky challenge

Competitors in the world’s most daring whisky challenge yesterday recalled the bravery of Ardbeg’s earliest distillers. With casks of Ardbeg’s award-winning single malt nestled in traditional wooden skiffs (boats), they set off into the Atlantic from the whisky’s remote Scottish island home of Islay, just as the original distillers might have done. The gruelling row, in driving wind and rain, was the finale of the Ultimate Ardbeg ARDventurer Challenge, which brings to life the untamed spirit of Ardbeg, the world’s smokiest, peatiest Islay malt whisky.

The Ultimate Ardbeg ARDventurer Challenge has taken ten contestants from around the globe on an odyssey into essential Islay, as they vied to become the Ultimate ARDventurer. A triumphant winner was declared at the end of their three-day quest over the rugged coastline, wild peat bogs, mist-capped hills and brooding lochs, which inspire Ardbeg’s whisky.

Throughout its 200-year history, the Ardbeg Distillery has depended on the sea to transport its renowned single malt beyond the island’s shores. In bygone days, distillers are thought to have rowed casks to sea to meet small ships, which would spirit the whisky away to the mainland. Yesterday, as the contestants’ odyssey came to the end, they followed in the wake of the original Ardbeggians, by transporting a cask of Ardbeg through the perilous waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Last night, Keishi Iwata, of GQ Japan, was named the Ultimate Ardbeg ARDventurer, chosen for the title from ten ARDventurers from countries including Canada, Germany, the UK, U.S. and Sweden. He had been ranked alongside his fellow contestants for Ardbeggian qualities such as survival spirit, endurance and resourcefulness, by the ARDventurer hosts, including Mickey Heads – Ardbeg’s Distillery Manager – and survival expert Monty Halls. The ARDventurers’ challenge had begun with an apprenticeship at the Distillery and an arduous trek to Ardbeg’s water source Loch Uigeadail. They camped at the loch, then spent a day cutting the peat which lends The Ultimate Islay Malt its smoky character, before camping again and then embarking on their challenging row.

Mickey Heads said: “Keishi really is our Ultimate Ardbeg ARDventurer. He went about things in his own quiet way, but he has really embodied Ardbeg’s spirit. Keishi was more than a match for Islay’s untamed landscape. He never complained and one night cooked singlehandedly for 16 in camp. Even more impressive, he must have been the only ARDventurer not to have fallen in a bog…”

K&L California “Compass Box Has Arrived!” – Scotch Whisky News

aa-kl

Our first offering of limited edition whisky from Compass Box has arrived! For those of you who missed out on four of last year’s most coveted, celebrated, and revered Scotch whiskies, this is your chance to right those wrongs! The Flaming Heart, Lost Blend, Hedonism Quindecimius, and “This is not a Luxury Whisky” releases were mostly purchased by our staff members back in 2015 and few of these bottles actually made it on to the sales floor. For the time being, however, we have limited quantities in stock. There is a strict one bottle limit for each expression, but the inventory is live for as long as it lasts!

COMPASS BOX HAS ARRIVED!

Compass Box Flaming Heart 15th Anniversary Limited Edition Malt Whisky $119.99

The Flaming Heart series is about as close as we can get to peated Brora these days, and in some instances it can be just as heavenly. This is one of those instances. While insiders have always loved Glaser’s Clynelish/Caol Ila marriage, it doesn’t get nearly the fanfare some of the other rare malts do. Made from: 27.1% 30 year old Caol Ila; 24.1% 20 year old Clynelish; 10.3% 7 year old Teaninich aged in new French oak, and 38.5% 14 year old Caol Ila. The whisky is almost perfect, in my opinion. It starts with a bit of malt, then the smoke comes in, and then comes the finish. This whisky is ALL ABOUT the finish. It’s sweet vanilla mixed with campfire smoke, with butterscotch covered all over it. The oiliness of the Clynelish kicks in ten seconds later, and five minutes after your first swallow you’re still getting feedback from the Flaming Heart satellite. Incredible, pure and simple. If I didn’t have a one bottle limit on this I’d tell you to buy six.

Compass Box Hedonism Quindecimus 15th Anniversary Limited Edition Scotch Whisky $179.99

A veritable super blend of North British, Port Dundas, Dumbarton, and another unnamed mystery component, the Hedonism Quindecimus is always one of the most anticipated releases of the year with its creamy, oak dominated, rich and supple profile and smooth, butterscotch finish. Very limited.

Compass Box “This Is Not A Luxury Whisky” Limited Edition Scotch Whisky $189.99

Our absolute favorite whisky of 2015 is back for another extremely limited run. Complex, rich, lightly smoky, and opulent with notes of sweet sherry, cocoa, and a creamy coconut character. Composed of 79% sherry aged Glen Ord (just like our 5th & Harrison release), 10.1% Strathclyde, 6.9% Girvan, and 4% Caol Ila. This is like a super high end version of Johnnie Blue but with much, much more single malt as the base. Those looking for utter elegance and polish, look no further.

Compass Box “The Lost Blend” Blended Malt Whisky $104.99

Inspired by The Lost Blend, a short story written by O. Henry in 1907, this is an elegantly complex union of two fruity Highland single malts from the Clynelish and Allt-A-Bhainne distilleries and a peaty Islay single malt from the Caol Ila distillery. The style is a homage to our own Lost Blend, Eleuthera, that we sadly retired in 2004. It has a sweet, ethereal fruit and herbal character buttressed by an underlying smokiness.
