New Japanese Whisky Releases at K&L – Whisky New

kl_logo_trans

It’s been quite a while since age-stated Japanese whiskies were available in any type of sustainable quantity, especially the super desirable Yamazaki malts from Suntory – whiskies that have seen their prices sky-rocket as a result of their new-found rarity. Yamazaki’s sister distillery – Suntory’s Hakushu facility – meanwhile has seen its prices rise as well, but mainly by default as stocks for the forest distillery’s whisky haven’t been nearly as limited (or desirable). While prices over the past few years have crept up from the mid-sixties to the high-eighties, we’re happy to announce a new deal that will bring the Hakushu back down to a price point not seen at K&L in years: $68.99. I don’t believe there are many retailers offering this whisky for less than $80, let alone $70 right now.

KL12

HAKUSHU

Personally, Ive always been surprised how much more popular the Yamazaki 12 is compared to its sibling the Hakushu 12. To me, the Yamazaki has always been a fine whiskey, but the more dynamic malt is easily the Hakushu, which as pretty much the same delicate and light-drinking flavor profile as the Yamazaki, but with just the faintest touch of smoke. It’s so ethereal straight out of the glass, but I feel like it tastes even better with ice (I know that’s tough for some people to handle). The subtle peat is like a ghost that moves slowly around every part of my palate, brushing it with hints of earth and phenolic goodness after coating it with sweet grains. With our new pricing, this is a can’t miss deal. It’s nice to have some real quantity again!

Suntory 12 Year Old “Hakushu” Japanese Peated Single Malt Whisky (750ml) (Previously $90) ($68.99)

Whisky Advocate: “Although only two years older, this expression of Hakushu the first to be launched in the U.S. shows a fleshier side to the distillerys wares. While it has retained the freshness of the 10 year old, it shows more pineapple and grapefruit on the nose, with a little fragrance of jasmine and osmanthus. On the palate, its fresh and lively with a hint of persimmon and a tickle of smoke. Recommended. (DB, Spring 2012)”

Wine Spectator: “This Suntory distillery is located in a mountain forest in the southern Japanese alps. The whisky has cool, mint/basil, bamboo, kiwi and green melon aromas with the faintest hint of smoke.” (10/2014)

K&L Notes: The newest Japanese whisky to hit the U.S. market is Suntory’s Hakushu–known as the “Forest Distillery.” Built in 1973 as a sister distillery to Suntory’s Yamazaki distillery (previously the only Japanese single malt available in the U.S.), the facility is located at a high-elevation site next to the “pristine waters” of the Ojira River, which are used to dilute the whisky itself. Hakushu distillery uses different styles of oak barrel to age their single malt, but mainly Hogshead, which, according to the distillery, is “suitable to the clear air and cool humid climate.” The 12-year old from Hakushu is lightly peated and very delicate in its flavor profile. The light and fruity style of the whisky is quite similar to the Yamazaki 12, but the smoke really makes up for the lack of richness. Because most of Japan drinks their younger malts with ice and water, the Hakushu is definitely another whisky designed for that purpose, which may turn off some of the single-malt sippers stateside. However, even straight at room temperature, the Hakushu really delivers quality flavors for the price point. Think Talisker, but distinctly less round or supple. So far I’ve really enjoyed tinkering with it in different forms–as a Highball, with an ice cube and just plain neat. This is one of the most enjoyable bottles I’ve purchased in some time. (David Driscoll, K&L Spirits Buyer)

TOKI

In addition to new pricing on the Hakushu, we’ve also lined up a better deal for Suntory’s latest entry level blend: Toki, which uses grain whisky from their third distillery called Chita. When the Suntory Toki first launched at $45, it was a bit of a stretch based on how hot the market was for Japanese whisky. I’m much more comfortable selling this in the mid-thirties, however, and with our new pricing we can do that. While you sip on your bottle of Yamazaki or Hakushu, you pour this one on the rocks, add some soda water, and make yourself a real mizuwari–the great whisky soda that dominates Japan’s drinking culture. The fruitiness on the nose really blossoms with the addition of bubbles, so don’t be shy here. Do Japanese whisky right and drink it how it’s intended!

TOKI

Suntory Toki Japanese Whisky (750ml) ($36.99)

Wine & Spirits: “*Year’s Best Spirits 2016* While it may seem that our world is suddenly awash in Japanese single malts, the fact is that were already in a shortage. Last year, as demand continued to build for its limited stocks, Suntory took the age statement off its Hibiki, suggesting less of the precious older stocks were being used. This year, theyve introduced Toki, a welcome addition to the portfolio. Whereas Hibiki is a burnished, complex sipper, Suntorys latest release, Toki, is a light, bright, perky spirit with a surprising punch of flavorapple, citrus and honey notes backed by a lingering smokiness. It makes an elegant summer whisky served on the rocks, but it also seems destined to usher the return of the whisky highball, which has become the drink of choice in Tokyo these days. Its very refreshing when made as they do, stirred over rocks in a tall glass, then joined with super-bubbly soda water and a lemon twist. (JM)” (11/2016)

K&L Notes: This blended whisky from Japanese powerhouse distiller Suntory is specifically formulated for a classic highball, made by mixing one part Toki with three parts sparkling water and serving over ice. From the distillery: “A vivid blend of whiskies from Suntory’s Hakushu, Yamazaki, and Chita distilleries, Suntory Whisky Toki™ features the quintessential characteristics of a Suntory Whisky blend: exquisite balance, harmony, and oneness. At the same time, its unique pairing of Hakushu American white oak cask malt whisky with Chita heavy-type grain whisky overturns the traditional hierarchy between malt and grain. These seemingly dissimilar but deeply accordant whiskies, together with select Yamazaki malts for additional depth and complexity, gives Suntory Whisky Toki its silky taste, vivid character, and bold inventiveness.”

Andrew Stevens | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: June 19, 2016

I, like so many others, really like a lot of what Suntory has to offer. There are so many wonderful whiskeys they put out, unfortunately many of these have gotten super expensive and rare. Fortunately, they are trying to fill in the gap with a more everyday whiskey, and the Toki is just the product to do that. A lightly fruited nose reminiscent of caramel apple and vanilla leads to a smooth and somewhat fruity whiskey. Baked apple and stone fruit notes are rounded with touches of vanilla and a somewhat creamy mouthfeel. Low heat finish rounds out the delightful little whiskey.

Russell Rye Single Barrel – Hot New Pricing

Since we’re already slashing pricing on great single malt and tasty blended whisky, we might as well continue the trend with new pricing on a great American rye selection. For the last few years-since the inception of the Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel rye-we’ve been selling one of Kentucky’s great high-proof rye whiskies for $70 (when we could get it). Today, however, we’ve managed to get pricing down to $55.99, which makes it only ten bucks more than Willett, but much older in age. Simply put, the Russell’s single barrel rye is one of the most pleasing American whiskies we carry, with flavors of rye bread, pepper, and plenty of oak for a warming finish. I think the seventy dollar price point kept people at bay, but now that we’re closer in line here with High West Rendezvous, this should be your new go-to bottle.

Russell’s Reserve Kentucky Single Barrel Rye Whiskey (750ml) (Previously $70) ($55.99)

Finally, after almost eight years of a serious Kentucky rye shortage, Wild Turkey has given us whiskey fans something to get excited about that we can actually get! Introducing the new Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Rye Whiskey: a 104 proof blast of old-school Kentucky rye flavor, meandering from dill and fresh-baked German rye bread, into a sweeter kiss of toasted oak and soft vanilla. It’s never boring. The palate is rooted in spice and a never-ending tingly sensation on your tongue that completely differentiates it from the Wild Turkey Bourbons. Real, compelling Kentucky rye whiskey is back on the shelf at K&L, available full time. No bottle limits, no raffles, no scouring the internet to track down your allocation.

David Driscoll | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 12, 2015

I remember when I couldn’t even get Wild Turkey Rye 101, but it appears the Kentucky stalwart is now rebounding from the last seven years of shortages. What a comeback! This is single barrel, high proof rye whiskey that tastes like 2008–back when I could find rich and powerful rye whiskies full of peppery notes and classic dill flavor. This is rye in the vein of of what you remember before everything started coming from LDI Distillery in Indiana. It’s like getting to know an old friend again.

Andrew Stevens | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 15, 2015

Very smooth creamy rye from Russell. I was taken aback a little when I first tasted this, with how smooth and well balanced this whiskey is. Definitely a good sipping rye that will please the palate of those just getting into this type of whiskey expression, or already love rye whiskey and want something special for the holidays.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 14, 2015

My favorite Rye in the store now. There are expressive and nice aromas with subtle spice undertones. In the mouth it is rich and round with nice caraway-like spice and a long finish. Since this is a single barrel selection inventory is limited.

1t your booze, don’t miss this one. At 50 bucks — the experience is worth every penny.

Compass Bx Double Single Now Available – Scotch Whisky News

CB

The Double Single – Available Now!

The third release of one of our favourite whiskies poses the question: How many components are required to create true complexity in a Blended Scotch Whisky?  For Double Single, instead of using many tens of component whiskies we have used just two – one single grain whisky and one single malt whisky (hence the name). Both are beautiful liquids in their own right but we believe they are elevated above the sum of their parts when combined in the correct proportions.  We believe that when using components of the highest quality, less is often more. That the interaction between a single grain and a single malt can be every bit as good – better even – than either a more complex blend or the component tasted on its own. The blending of the two component whiskies in The Double Single allows the sweet caramel flavours of the grain whisky to complement the fruity and herbal flavours of the malt, giving the final blend a creamy vanilla character overlaying a delicate ethereal malt whisky character.

Above all, share & enjoy!

KL1

Whisky fans take note as we have once again brokered a deal in which we can bring you exclusive single malt bottlings at significantly discounted prices. We are talking authentic, beautifully crafted selections that cost 40-50% less than what you’d pay elsewhere in the country. By partnering with John Milroy Selections we are now have access to single malts that are every bit as thrilling and temptingly priced as our sensationally popular “Old Particular” exclusives.

1997Ben Nevis 18 Year Old “John Milroy K&L Exclusive” Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) $59.99

1995Tormore 20 Year Old “John Milroy” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) $89.99

1995Glen Garioch 20 Year Old “John Milroy” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) $119.99

With the John Milroy Selections, in addition to the outrageous value you’re also getting access to rare stocks that don’t just show up every day. These casks have been selected by one of the top noses in the business and are notable for their incredible depth and complexity. All of Milroy’s carefully curated selections seek to highlight the incredible quality of the spirit going into the casks which means they’re often going to come from refill hogsheads or bourbon barrels. These types of casks are the distillers’ preferred vessels because maturity is achieved through subtle concentration over decades, thereby truly highlighting the exceptional flavor of the great spirit inside. Great Scotch doesn’t need much more than that to be spectacular. Pick-up a bottle or two of these exceptional finds and find out why we are so excited about these most recent additions to our single malt portfolio.

The wonderful John Milroy’s line of single malt single cask Scotch is finally back, and we’re proud to be the exclusive purveyor of this special brand in California. The legacy of the Milroy’s name goes back to 1964, when John “Jack” Milroy opened a little wine shop at #3 Greek Street in an upscale neighborhood on the West End of London. Over the next 30 years, the Milroys and their talented store manager, Doug McIver, would make the Milroy name synonymous with exceptional single-cask Scotch. Eventually, McIver moved on to become the head of the venerable Berry Bros & Rudd Spirits Department, and Jack Milroy struck out on his own to create the equally well-regarded “John Milroy Selection” brand of single-cask single malts. In 2009, Jack tapped Doug as his pick to take the special line of Scotch into the new century–partnering with Berry’s would ensure that only the very best whisky would be bottled under the Milroy name. Doug takes this spiritual legacy seriously and he’s finally put together a portfolio of exceptional single casks. We’re proud to be his partners in California.

We’re offering today an exceptional Ben Nevis aged 18 years. This special distillery is becoming one of the most sought-after Highland offerings thanks to its robust and full flavored profile. The distillery stands at the base of the highest mount in the British Isles and is owned by the famed Japanese distiller Nikka. Founded in 1825 in the far-flung town of Fort Williams, it’s definitely worth a detour if ever possible as the Western Coast is simply breathtaking. The distillery sells a single cask at 15 years for nearly $200. Retailers in other states who snagged a bit of this before we moved in and are asking upwards of $130! We’re selling the very SAME CASK for $60. It boasts big malty flavors with tons of coastal influence and deep mossy finish. While the Ben Nevis is becoming more popular and more regularly on offer here at K&L, it will rarely be available at such a stupendously low price. Grab this one quickly!

The far-flung and unsung distillery in the town of Fort William is named for the highest mountain in the British Isles, which looms behind the distillery on the rugged west coast of Scotland. Nikka Whisky Distilling Co. acquired the distillery in 1989 and has worked to improve quality ever since. We don’t often see Ben Nevis available, but whisky of this quality and price cannot be ignored!

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 29, 2017

This killer Ben Nevis is one of the best values we’ve seen from the Highland Distillery, which can often command a hefty premium. The nose is almost textbook Highland Malt for me. Big notes of fresh heather, whisps of something fusible (maybe it’s camphor or lamp oil), sweet herbal honey, lump sugar, moss growing up the banks of a babbling brook in a dark forest somewhere. Ok, sorry about that one, but seriously it’s a bit mossy. On the palate, rich malt, slight hints of fresh peat, and a wonderful full bodied texture. This one loves water and some time in the glass. It cleans it out a bit and brings out this wonderful golden fruit, mirabelle, fresh herbs and a old copper coins. Some whiffs of aged white wine. Maybe more some preserved lemon and a gravelly note that pops up on the palate. This one is an absolute cranking for the price.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 27, 2017

This is for people who are looking for a light and clean single malt. The aromas are pretty, light and delicate. This theme continues in the mouth with soft, smooth and subtle malt flavors. There is no smoke and there is plenty of joy in this tasty and nuanced whiskey.

Olivia Ragni | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 30, 2017

This is both soft and easy to put down, with some funky notes of almond skins and sake yet flavors of lemon cake, malt, vanilla and a super creamy mouthfeel. Easy, yet complex, a single malt lover’s paradise.

Keith Mabry | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 30, 2017

One of my favorites in this line-up of John Milroy casks, this is INTENSE stuff. Beautiful toasted spelt on the nose, there are harmonious sweet spices and long vanilla notes on the palate. This finishes even longer in the mouth with a broad and lengthy grain notes. Take into account the quality, the age and that this is well south of $100 and you may have one of the best single malt values in K&L history.

KL3

Finally, the very first cask of Tormore we’ve ever bottled and likely the only Tormore we’ve had in stock this century and it is a real treat. The distillery is extremely beautiful, built in 1958 it’s rather young by Scottish standards. The striking copper roofs are unforgettable, but usually we see them wiz by as we drive the A95 toward Aberlour and Dufftown. The attractive and inviting look of the distillery belies the extremely limited offerings within. Recently released 14 & 16 year old versions are available at the distillery, but not yet exported by parent company Pernod Ricard (Chivas Brothers). A huge majority of the production goes into the blends. IN fact, I’ve only tried one other Tormore in the last decade and it was an 80 proof single cask 16 year old bottling from Signatory that retailed for about the same price as this one. That was 4+ years ago. Tormore is known for its malty fresh style and medium body. This particular cask has some dark gravelly edges to round out by a wonderful fruity floral quality and loves a few drops of water. A fun and different malt driven whisky that’s perfect for summer sipping. I’m assuming this will be a first Tormore for many of our customers.

The very first Tormore to hit our shelves in over a decade and certainly the first single cask we’ve sold. This super easy drinker needs a bit of water, but swims like a charm. Tormore is famous for striking copper roofs and its light floral malt. With some serious age it’s developed a great depth and some fabulous complexity while remaining refreshing and quaffable like few other malts in the store.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 02, 2017

This is the first Tormore we’ve had in the shop in over a decade and it’s a wonderful example of this ultra fresh and light style. The perfect summer malt, and it loves water. For anyone that’s driven around Speyside, you’d recognize the incredibly beautiful grounds and stunning copper roofs of this rare little distillery. It’s not small production, but Chivas lets very little out as it’s a base malt for many of their blends. This light fresh style is exactly what you want on a hot summers night or even GASP over ice. The nose starts strong note of black tea, fresh gravel and peaches. A pointed oakiness develops as we go deeper, fresh pencil shavings, dark roasted malt, lanolin – a slight dusty note. With a nice dollop of water the edginess falls away leaving wonderful pithy citrus, stone fruit skins, sweet malt. The tiniest hint of peat doesn’t show it’s self until the spirit hits the palate. This plays perfectly off the super sweet malt and round fruit. An easy soft let down on the back end. This is real drinkers malt and loves water, so it should be consumed with that in mind.

Andrew Stevens | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 02, 2017

This is one of the richest of the Milroy casks I have tasted so far and a super cool example of how Sherry casking can work. Although there is some richness on the nose, I also get notes of slightly oxidized floral and almonds that you find in Sherry. The palate was creamy and smooth with vanilla, butterscotch, and a warming heat towards the finish. That heat and spice lead to a super long finish and help keep this bottle in your mind as you sip.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 27, 2017

Before this bottling I had never tasted a single malt from Tormore. I am glad that I got a chance to do so because this offering has so much to offer. In the nose there are caramel notes with savory undertones. With a splash of water, it is rich and juicy, packed with concentrated malt and dried fruit flavors that are very delicious. It is complex and interesting and should give joy to fans of single malts. This is the most unique selection of the John Milroy bottlings that are currently in stock.

Anthony Russo | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 28, 2017

Elegance at its best, this 20 year old is a bit lighter on the peat and has soft caramel flavors that provide the structure. Less herbal and grassy, there is an amazing orange zest flavor that make this spirit seem alive.

From the famous stalwart of the eastern Highlands this cask of Glen Garioch represents some of the finest in this style we’ve seen in ages. Glen Garioch produces one of the highest quality distillates in Scotland, historically quite peaty; it’s now a fruity, bready, malty magician. You might liken it to a fuller bodied version of Clynelish. Subtle and brimming with complexity, Glen Garioch is a true BLUE CHIP distillery and we’ve only managed to bottle it exclusively only twice before. Both of those casks were bottled by the distillery and distilled after the 1995 closure. This cask represents some of the oldest stocks of Glen Garioch we’ve seen on the open market and comes from the period right before the distillery was mothballed for several years. A very rare treat indeed! This little single cask Glen Garioch is of such high quality that our out of state competitors feel confident in asking nearly $200 a bottle for this special whisky. It likely is worth at least that, but our price is nearly 40% less. These special casks don’t come around very often and if you know Glen Garioch than you’ll know that you must have this special whisky.

The wonderful historic Glen Garioch is one of the oldest active distilleries in Scotland. Founded in 1797 behind the tiny hamlet of Old Meldrum, it was in the Morrison Bowmore portfolio when it was acquired by Suntory in 1984. Distilled in early 1995, it’s some of the final spirit distilled before its closure. This ultra malty style transports you directly to barley fields of Aberdeenshire.

David Othenin-Girard | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 21, 2017

The first nosing of this stupendous cask takes me right back to Old Meldrum and our first visit to Glen Garioch. Here we have that wonderful Garioch maltiness, that’s almost unmistakable. It could easily be a helping of skirlie ir mealie (oats fried in butter) if it weren’t for that deep gravelly malt note in the background. With a bit of air and a drop of water, the beautiful flinty character of Garioch shines through, almost on the level of the best trocken Rieslings. The nose is vibrant with waxy fruit, grapeseed oil, lemon peel and tiny hints of camphor. The palate is so open, yet wildly complex with the waxy fruit gaining hold culminating in a long finish of herbs and green tea. An absolute treat and a great value for a rare blue chip distillery.

Andrew Stevens | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 02, 2017

There is something really unique that Glen Garioch does that I can almost always identify, yet it is difficult for me to describe. Tasting this bottle I again was pleased to taste this beautiful note that is so quintessentially Glen Garioch to me. What is perhaps even more exciting is that this is what I was always told was old school, classic Highland style that I have rarely gotten to taste. The nose is light vanilla and cut hay with hints of cereal. Sipping it I got oatmeal and light grassy grain notes with a little vanilla and heat. This is light and beautiful whisky, low heat and a little wood spice, truly old school cool.

Olivia Ragni | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 30, 2017

The John Milroy bottling of Glen Garioch is quite elegant and insanely complex. The different aromas and flavors just go on forever. Fresh fennel, candied orange peel and lemongrass jump from the glass while on the palate notes of candied lemon peel, mint and sugar cookie come through. A stunning single malt.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 27, 2017

I tasted this product with and with out water. With no water there is a nice malt undertone but savory notes are somewhat pronounced both in the nose and in the mouth. With the additions of a little water, this Glen Garioch opens up letting the malt flavors come up with the savory notes playing a supportive role. This selection is full of nuance and will be a pleasure to sit down with and think about.

Anthony Russo | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: March 29, 2017

This Scotch is impressively layered and held together with a touch of peat. Flavors of stone fruit, oranges, and caramel all balance each other out, yet individually shine. A “must-have” for drinkers of elegantly structured Scotches.

CASK NO. 64.84  SPRUCED-UP FRUIT SALAD

12 years old; 1st fill barrel; 58.7%; Juicy, oak & vanilla A spruced-up tropical fruit salad of grapefruit, kiwi and pineapple, exotically perfumed and slightly nutty, all ‘dressed up’ with watermelon, agave and Dijon vinaigrette. Diluted, a creamy iced coffee with vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate brittle. The finish, a Mexicana ‘café de olla’ with cinnamon and orange peel.

CASK NO. 85.45  THE LEMON ROCKET SHIP

8 years old; 1st fill barrel; 61.8%; Young & spritely

The giant lemon rocket ship with marshmallow seats and dials made of yellow wine gums was fuelled with bitter lemon, tonic water and cooling menthol and spearmint to prevent overheating. With a chili kick it soared into the stratosphere, destination… the twin planets of rhubarb and custard.

CASK NO. 37.83  AN ODYSSEY OF FLAVOUR

12 years old; virgin oak hogshead, heavy toast/medium char; 57.1%; Juicy, oak & vanilla

Ripe mango, quince jelly and tart black cherries integrating with liquorice cake, treacle tart with short crust pastry and custard. A French polishers toolbox, damp forest floor and sweet balsa wood. Water released dried herbs, fennel and coriander seed. This whisky previously inhabited an ex-bourbon hogshead.

CASK NO. G6.5  CHOCOLATE-COVERED JALAPENOS

35 years old; refill hogshead; 49%; Sweet, fruity & mellow

We entered a carpenter’s workshop with aromas of wood shavings, beeswax and French polish with the addition of the scent of vetiver fragrance. We were offered white chocolate-covered Jalapeno peppers and candied nuts all washed down with an Espresso Martini.

CASK NO. 46.47  MEXICAN BREAKFAST

14 years old; 1st fill Pedro Ximenez butt; 59.8%; Spicy & dry

A ‘huevos rancheros’ on the nose neat; chili tomato stew with fried eggs and cheese wrapped in tortillas whilst on the palate we added coriander and turmeric to the mix. This whisky previously inhabited an Oloroso sherry butt.

CASK NO. 3.245  BIG PERSONALITY (NO PUSSYCAT)

17 years old; refill sherry butt; 56.9%; Peated

A deep, rich nose – tar-covered ropes, wetsuits, sneakers, leather, antiseptic, syrup of figs, Branston pickle, seafood barbecue embers and struck match. The palate has a big personality – salty, smoky and sweet – burnt raisins, bonfire ash, treacle, sherry, anchovies and biltong.

CASK NO. 29.205  TWO-WHEELED BEACH CRUISER

17 years old; refill barrel; 58.8%; Peated

Cycling past an old shipwreck with tar-covered timbers, the smell of sticky pork ribs on a bbq, smoked rhubarb crumble and sweet smoked salmon.
