First core range release from The GlenAllachie Distillery – Scotch Whisky News

The GlenAllachie aged collection

First core range release from The GlenAllachie Distillery

Independent, boutique Scotch whisky distillery, The GlenAllachie has unveiled its first core range of aged single malts, which have been specially selected by Master Distiller and industry icon Billy Walker.

The release from the Speyside distillery all feature age statements ranging from 10-year-old cask strength, the flagship 12-year-old alongside 18 and 25-year-old bottlings.

This is the first core range release from the new company – Billy Walker acquired The GlenAllachie Distillery, with business partners Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson, from Pernod Ricard in October 2017 in a multi-million-pound deal.

Billy Walker GlenAllachie Managing Director and Master Distiller explained:

“The first release of our GlenAllachie core range has been a culmination of months of hard work and a passion to turn GlenAllachie into a very popular and much sought after single malt whisky.  It is an honour to be its custodian and to develop this range of single malts.

“The range of casks we have warehoused is tremendous with nearly 50,000 maturing at our distillery, some of which date back to the 1970’s. Our aim is to nurture this tremendous spirit and for these single malts to be admired both home and abroad.”

Each release is natural colour, non-chill-filtered and bottled at a minimum of 46% ABV:

  • The 10-year-old expression reflects Walker’s desire to showcase a taste of The GlenAllachie Distillery bottled straight from the cask at natural strength. The 57.1% whisky was matured in American oak, Pedro Ximinez, Oloroso and virgin oak casks, and is described as tasting of honey, vanilla, toffee, marmalade with a layer of rose hip and Caribbean spices.
  • The 12-year-old single malt is described by Walker as “the heart of our range.” Matured in Pedro Ximinez, Oloroso and virgin oak casks, the whisky imparts sweet Butterscotch notes on the nose, and a taste of honey, marzipan and bananas, plus further lashings of Butterscotch.
  • The Glenallachie 18-year-old exemplifies the signature style of GlenAllachie – a combination of rich and robust spirit with heather and butterscotch notes, along with subtle hints of dark chocolate.
  • The pinnacle of the range, the 25-year-old, is a beautiful beaten copper colour following its quarter of a century maturing in Pedro Ximinez, Oloroso and American oak casks. This regally rich single malt whisky delivers lashings of sultanas, pineapples and dark chocolate, followed by layers of Christmas cake, marmalade and sweet spices.

The GlenAllachie now has distribution in more than 28 countries including strategic markets – the USA, Germany, Taiwan, China and France. In the UK The GlenAllachie is available from specialist retailers.

All the bottles bear the words ‘From the valley of the rocks’, translating from the original Gaelic name “Gleann Aileachaidh.”

The GlenAllachie Distillery was designed by William Delme-Evans – the architect behind Jura, Macduff and Tullibardine – and was built in 1968 by Mackinlay McPherson, the distilling arm of brewers Scottish & Newcastle.  It sits within a 20-acre estate and uses water sourced from Hangman’s Craig and Black Banks on the slopes of Ben Rinnes. It has four stills but unusually it also has two separate spirit safes, one for each set of stills.

Walker has converted existing buildings on site to dunnage warehousing bringing total to 16 warehouses holding almost 50,000 casks of GlenAllachie. An additional 2 dunnage warehouses will also be built at the distillery along with a bottling line.

The 2018 Kilchoman Loch Gorm and Port Cask Matured Are Here! – Scotch Whisky News

impex1

KILCHOMAN PORT CASK MATURED

This is the second Port Cask Matured expression released by Kilchoman, the first, launched in 2014 being one of the most talked about Kilchoman releases in the distillery’s thirteen-year history.  The 2018 edition is a vatting of thirty ruby port hogsheads filled in 2014, yielding a total of 10,000 bottles.  The distillery’s commitment to full term maturation has continued, with the decision to age only in port casks rather than using such barrels for finishing.  This gives the whisky an added dimension, with layers of red fruits, creamy vanilla and floral sweetness that flood in with the intensity expected of a 50% abv bottling strength.

“Historically our port and sherry matured releases have received a very positive response from the whisky community, I think the 2018 editions are probably the best versions of these expressions we’ve released to date so I’m excited to see the how these latest editions are received”

~ Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder.

Bottled at 50% ABV     ||     RRP: $124.99

Nose:   Red fruits with light citrus, earthy peat smoke and hints of creamy sweetness.

Palate: Redcurrant jam, cinnamon with layers of citrus, floral sweetness and coastal influence.

Finish:  Layers of cooked red fruits, vanilla, peat and lasting intensity.

The Loch Gorm is the only global release from Kilchoman that is matured solely in sherry casks, with its combination of rich sherry notes, cooked fruits and subtle Islay peat, it’s not surprising that this is one of the distillery’s best-selling single malts.

Bottled at 46% ABV     ||     RRP: $109.99

An experiment in innovation… The A. D. Rattray Octave Project – Scotch Whisky News

Bunnahabhain Octave Set - 2 (002)

OctaveProjectLogo (002)

An experiment in innovation… The A. D. Rattray Octave Project

The A. D. Rattray Octave project involved taking a cask of matured whisky from a single distillery, and dividing it between four different Octave casks. The 50 litre Octave casks were crafted from oak staves taken from a larger cask that had previously contained either PX Sherry, Oloroso Sherry, Rioja or Rum. The aim was to investigate the effect of the amplified wood-to-spirit interaction during a short burst of second wood maturation.

Having carefully monitored the Octaves over time, at five months they decided the wood finishes were ready to bottle. One portion of whisky from the original cask was retained to enable a point of comparison.

The experiment, as detailed above, was conducted with an Arran 2011 Bourbon Barrel, Pulteney 2007 Bourbon Hogshead and Bunnahabhain 2002 Bourbon Hogshead.

The Results

The results have been presented in sets containing 5 x 30ml samples including the original Bourbon cask and the 4 Octave finishes – PX Sherry, Oloroso Sherry, Rioja and Rum.

The 3 sets, Arran (£25), Pulteney (£30) and Bunnahabhain (£35), are available to buy exclusively from A. D. Rattray on their new online shop – shop.adrattray.com. Limited numbers of 700ml bottles of each cask finish can also be purchased.

A. D. Rattray have chosen not to comment on their results or to publish official tasting notes, as they want to know what the whisky community think.

Heaven Hill Distillery Announces Limited Edition Release of Heaven Hill 27-Year-Old Barrel Proof Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey – American Whiskey News

Heaven Hill Distillery Announces Limited Edition Release of Heaven Hill 27-Year-Old Barrel Proof Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Less than 3,000 bottles of pre-fire Bourbon available in this one time-release

BARDSTOWN, KY – Heaven Hill Distillery announced today the release of Heaven Hill 27-Year-Old Barrel Proof Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, a rare bottling produced at Old Heaven Hill Springs Distillery before it was destroyed by fire in 1996. Only 41 barrels produced in 1989 and 1990 passed taste testing for inclusion in this limited release that represents Heaven Hill’s heritage of distilling.

“As stewards of the Bourbon movement we take pride in the perseverance that is a hallmark of Heaven Hill’s 83-year history,” said President Max L. Shapira. “We remain committed to an enduring legacy of quality and patience, just as we have since 1935.”

Heaven Hill Barrel Proof Small Batch Bourbon, selected from limited remaining stocks of pre-fire barrels, has been closely monitored and allowed to age for an astounding 27 years. All but five of the barrels in this small batch were aged on the first and second floors, where increased humidity and evaporation caused the proof to drop. When all 41 barrels were mingled for bottling, the natural barrel proof was an unusually low 94.7 proof (47.35% abv). The resulting taste profile begins with an aroma of dried fruits and baking spices, with pipe tobacco notes developing after some time in the glass. A gentle entry is followed by an explosion of vanilla and floral flavor with traces of pepper and clove. After a slow and warming build up, the finish is incredibly long, yet very soft.

This ultra-premium Bourbon will be released in an elegant, tall 750ml bottle placed in a custom wooden box bearing two H’s on each side signifying the Heaven Hill name. The bottle is secured in the box with magnetic closure and sits in a blue satin-lined base. The distiller’s notes label features hand-written bottle numbers, distiller tasting notes, and DSP-KY-31, denoting the Old Heaven Hill Springs Distillery. The one-time release of Heaven Hill 27-Year-Old Barrel Proof Small Batch Bourbon, shipping late fall 2018, will be available in limited markets for a suggested retail price of $399.

The Whisky Barrel releases their latest exclusive single cask bottling – Scotch Whisky News

TWB-Glenlivet-11-Year-Old-2007-Signatory Exclusive label

The Whisky Barrel releases their latest exclusive single cask bottling.

Specialist online whisky shop, TheWhiskyBarrel.com, is proud to release an exclusive single cask malt whisky distilled at the Speyside distillery, Glenlivet.

In November 2017 TheWhiskyBarrel.com released a similar bottling as part of The Whisky Barrel 10th Anniversary Celebrations which received fantastic customer feedback. In March 2018, following a visit to the warehouses of Signatory Vintage, TheWhiskyBarrel.com were delighted to find another cask of Glenlivet maturing in a first-fill sherry cask. Glenlivet 11 Year Old, 2007 vintage was then hand-picked for TheWhiskyBarrel.com.

Glenlivet Distillery sits in a remote glen in Ballindalloch, Banffshire. A fantastic new extension including an extra mashtun, eight washbacks and six stills was opened by the Prince of Wales in 2010.

Glenlivet 11 Year Old, 2007 has been matured in a first-fill sherry cask #900134 and has a lovely deep colour to it. This whisky is very similar to the previous Glenlivet released by TheWhiskyBarrel.com. It has a great level of complexity to it and a certain weight brought about by the sherry influence, but this is well balanced by the sweetness that follows.

Available exclusively from The Whisky Barrel, shipping to customers Worldwide including the United States of America, Canada and Japan.
