NEW JAMESON CRESTED X EIGHT DEGREES BREWING COLLABORATION UNVEILED – Irish Whiskey News

NEW JAMESON CRESTED X EIGHT DEGREES BREWING COLLABORATION UNVEILED

Irish Distillers, makers of some of the world’s most enjoyed whiskeys, has joined forces with Eight Degrees Brewing to create a second experimental limited edition of the beloved Jameson Crested.

Launching this month, Jameson Crested Finished in Devil’s Ladder Belgian Tripel Barrels is the next step in an exciting collaboration between Irish Distillers and its Co. Cork neighbour, Eight Degrees.

Making the most of their close relationship, in 2020 Eight Degrees finished their Beligian Tripel craft beer in Jameson sherry casks. Named Devil’s Ladder after the best-known hiking route up Ireland’s tallest peak, the beer truly takes taste to new heights.

Always seeking an opportunity to innovate, Jameson returned the compliment by selecting a special whiskey to mature in the beer-soaked barrels. After four months of maturation, the result is a stunning evolution of Jameson Crested, with abundant spices, floral hops and sweetness, while the oak and malt work in tandem to add a toasted cereal character.

“It’s no secret that the flavours found in beer and whiskey complement each other,” explains Irish Distillers’ Blender Dave McCabe.

“We are delighted that in recent years our relationship and indeed proximity to Eight Degrees Brewing here in Cork has created a canvas for collaboration and experimentation in this space, both as part of the Jameson Caskmates Series and beyond.

“The Belgian Tripel beer finish brings a balanced contribution to Jameson Crested, accentuating elements such as sweetness in the form of vanilla and brown sugar, as well as a roasted malt character and elevated clove notes,” adds McCabe.

Daniel O’Shea, Head Brewer at Eight Degrees Brewing adds: “It was in the spirit of innovation that we decided to rest Devil’s Ladder in Jameson sherry casks, adding sweetness and Christmas cake notes to our Belgian Tripel. We are thrilled that the story has now come full circle, with our beer imparting a delicate hoppy character to this iconic Irish whiskey.”

A limited-edition release of fewer than 6,000 bottles, Jameson Crested Finished in Devil’s Ladder Belgian Tripel Barrels will launch in O’Brien’s Wines from 23rd April, specialist retailers off licenses from 26th April, and select markets through Jameson’s online shop at jamesonwhiskey.com from 28th April priced at €50 (70cl)[1].

Notes:

Jameson Crested Finished in Devil’s Ladder Belgian Tripel Barrels Tasting Notes, by Dave McCabe, Blender, Midleton Distillery

Nose: Initial notes of clove spice and cinnamon along with rich caramelised brown sugar and a roasted malt character that complements the sherry casks’ influence of toasted oak and dried fruits.

Taste: Round with abundant spices and a delicate floral hoppy character. Vanilla sweetness comes to the fore with a soft fruit note lingering in the background while the oak and malt work in tandem adding a toasted cereal element to the whiskey.

Finish: Lingering with the spices slowly fading, allowing the sweet nature of the oak and malt to remain until the very end.

How to Drink:

Enjoy neat to get the best of this liquid or pair with a craft beer (Eight Degrees Devil’s Ladder Belgian Tripel). For something mixed try:

An Chéad Chéim / The First Step

Ingredients: 35.5ml Jameson Crested X Devils ladder, 150ml freshly squeezed Apple Juice (or store-bought cloudy apple juice), 3 dashes of cardamom bitters.

To Make: Fill Glass with ice. Pour whiskey. Add apple juice. Add 3 dashes of bitters, quick stir. Garnish with apple fan or wedge, serve.

New Exclusive: Caol Ila 2005 15yo Refill Sherry Cask #301507 Connoisseurs Choice at The Whisky Exchange – Scotch Whisky News

New Exclusive: Caol Ila 2005 15yo Refill Sherry Cask #301507 Connoisseurs Choice

We’ve spent the past year lining up great exclusive releases to appear over the coming months, and the latest bottle has just landed: a specially selected refill-sherry cask, bottled for us by the team at Gordon & MacPhail – Caol Ila 2005 15yo Cask #301507.

Connoisseurs Choice

Gordon & MacPhail is one of Scotland’s oldest independent bottlers. It started in 1895 as a grocers in Elgin in the heart of Speyside and have been laying down stocks of great whisky ever since. It moved into the hands of the Urquhart family in 1915, and ever since they have been working to ensure that there’ll be interesting whisky in the warehouse for future generations.

The Connoisseurs Choice range (no apostrophe) appeared in 1968 and was a ground-breaking range of single malts in a sea of blended whisky. It was curated by George Urquhart, the second generation of the family to run the company, who helped lay the foundations of the Gordon & MacPhail’s incredible stocks and brought single malt to the world.

We’ve been working with G&M for years, and are very pleased that they let us have this single cask release of Caol Ila, bottled exclusively for us as part of the Connoisseurs Choice range.

Caol Ila 2005 15 Year Old Refill Sherry Cask

The mixture of peat smoke and sherry used to be very rare in the whisky world, although the past few years have seen more casks hit the market. It’s a difficult combination to get right, but when it works it can be an excellent marriage. When a sample of this whisky landed on TWE boss Sukhinder Singh’s desk, it was an immediate yes.

Distilled at Caol Ila, the whisky was filled into cask in 2005 and bottled on 6 January 2021 at 15 years old. It spent the intervening years in a refill sherry hogshead, which is a great combination: the more subtle – but definitely still obvious – sherry influence works well with the fruity and smoky Islay spirit, complementing rather than swamping it.

Nose: Singed fruit cake and liquorice sticks lead, with sea-side ozone, breaking waves and cold cast-iron stoves to follow. Burning leaves build along with buttered toast, tar, lime, sweet and spicy baked apples.

Palate: Rich and thick, with mint, raisins and cherry slowly enveloped by damp peat smoke, dark chocolate and lime jelly. Leafy notes develop – freshly fallen pine needles and autumnal forest floors. Spiced shortbread, fiery aniseed balls and tarry liquorice linger.

Finish: Mint and lemon jelly, chocolate lime sweets and tingling spice slowly fade.

There are only 266 bottles of this Caol Ila and we’ve already opened one to taste ourselves. If you want one of the remaining 265, head to The Whisky Exchange website or drop by one of our London shops – make sure you check the opening hours before heading down and give them a ring to check they still have some bottles left.

Introducing our new Hearts & Crafts expression

We’re delighted to announce the launch of our limited edition Hearts & Crafts Pineau De Charentes Cask Single Malt Whisky which is now available to purchase on our website. As one of our Club members, we are offering you the chance to buy a bottle before it is made available to the general public.

Our Pineau de Charentes Cask is the second expression in our Hearts & Crafts collection. This yearly limited edition series celebrates the Arts & Crafts movement which flourished here in the Cotswolds and stood for the importance of traditional craftsmanship – the same values upon which our beautiful rural distillery was built.

For this release, we’ve selected a small parcel of premium French oak ex-red wine casks seasoned with white Pineau de Charentes – a wonderful blend of fresh grape juice and Cognac.
