A new release to the Ben Nevis range for 2021. Non-age statement whisky named after a scenic region and route up the famous Ben Nevis mountain.  Ben Nevis Coire Leis Highland single malt Scotch whisky from the distillery in Fort William. A big full bodied highland malt.

Nose: a rich and warming character with toffee and honeyed vanilla, a light woody aroma finishing with barley sugar sweetness.

Taste: initial notes of fresh apricots followed by a malty sweetness leading to a smooth, creamy and woody finish.

BEN NEVIS SINGLE MALT WHISKY

Ben Nevis Distillery is a Highland malt whisky distillery established by John McDonald in 1825 at Inverlochy just north of Fort William and rests at the foot of Ben Nevis, Scotland’s highest mountain. A Coffey’s Still was installed in in 1955 and both malt and grain whiskies were produced simultaneously until 1981. The core range comprises Ben Nevis 10 Year Old, McDonald’s Traditional and single cask bottling are released from time to time. The distillery is owned by Nikka of Japan.

Glenglassaugh’s oldest release in their history, surviving its slumber all through the years of distillery closure and revival!

This is an extremely special and rare whisky aged for half-a-century and limited to 264 bottles at a strength of 40.1% abv. The elegant finish in Andalucían Pedro Ximénez casks adds a deep fruit and spiced oak complexity of fig and blackberry paired with a seductive sweetness on the palate of caramelised pear, cherries and almonds. The experience finishes up with refined oak, tropical notes and a gentle coastal breeze. If you’re looking for a spectacular whisky of a great age then look no further!

It’s not every day you get to announce a 50 year old single malt, never mind one of the rarest expressions to ever arrive from the distillery. This Glengassaugh is exactly that. Only 264 bottles have been made, and it has been bottled at 40.1% abv. The expression has spent 50 years maturing in the distillery’s warehouses and has even survived the distillery closing down!

Thankfully its rest was undisturbed, and it got its due reward by being finished in none other than Pedro Ximénez sherry casks from Andalucía, Spain. Now that’s what we call ending with a flourish! A special whisky from one of the most outstanding Highland distilleries, each bottle of this will have world-wide attention put toward it.

Rich vanilla aromas give way to sultanas and cured meats on the nose. The palate has black pepper intertwined with red apple and dark chocolate. A long and smoky finish with lingering citrus awaits in this wonderfully sherried dram reserved to 612 bottles at a strength of 59.6% abv.

Connoisseurs Choice rarely disappoints. Independent bottlers Gordon & MacPhail are experts at picking up rare casks, and this 20-year-old single malt certainly no exception. From the Caol Ila Distillery, this cask strength whisky was filled into a first fill sherry butt back in the year 2000. It was bottled in 2021 and has yielded 612 bottles. Free from chill filtration, this has a natural cask-imparted colour and arrives at a warming 59.6% abv.

Rich vanilla aromas give way to sultanas and cured meats on the nose. The palate is one of black pepper, intertwining with red apple and dark chocolate. A long and smoky finish with lingering citrus awaits in this wonderfully sherried dram. An Islay that is just waiting to be enjoyed.

Springbank Distillery was established in 1828 in Campbeltown at the foot of the Mull of Kintyre on the west coast of Scotland. Springbank produces three different types of single malt whisky Hazelburn which is non-peated and triple distilled, Longrow which is highly peated and double distilled and Springbank which is medium peated and partially triple distilled having been distilled two and a half times. Barley is spread across traditional malting floors at Springbank where it germinates and is then dried on the perforated floor of the malt kiln. The Springbank 10 Year Old, 15 Year Old Local Barley and Springbank 21 Year old annual release are very popular whiskies.

2002 Linkwood 18 Year Old “Hepburn’s Choice” K&L Exclusive Single Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

The splendid Linkwood Distillery is truly the unsung hero of the Diageo portfolio. While we wonder desperately why they won’t bother to sell it regularly as a single malt, we’re constantly reminded that the core blends represent the vast majority of their profits and this is such a crucial element in those products that risking their integrity by marketing a single malt version is not good business. We luckily have access to the occasional barrel from our sources in Scotland and we rarely say no to Linkwood. The distillery was founded in 1821, but didn’t start production until 1825. In 1971 a second distillery was built and operated on the same site and dubbed Linkwood “B”. The two distilleries operated concurrently until the late 80s when one or both were mothballed, but by the early 90s they were each running again. Both operated via steam heat together have a capacity of close to 2.5 million gallons per year. It seems that both distilleries continue to operate in tandem, with a total of 6 stills (3 wash and 3 spirit). Expect the classic Linkwood character, full of fruit, pure maltiness and the tiniest tingle of peat. Drops of licorice, heather, honey, citrus are welcome. At full strength it’s great, but could still stand to have a drop or two of nice spring water added to open up the rich inviting aromas of this special malt. INTRODUCING TALES OF THE MACALLAN VOLUME I –

THE STORY OF AN EXTRAORDINARY WHISKY-MAKING LEGACY

The Macallan has unveiled Tales of The Macallan Volume I, the first limited edition whisky in a new series of single malts which tells the story of The Macallan pioneers and their whisky-making legacy.

Tales of The Macallan Volume I, The Laird of Easter Elchies (1659 – 1715), is an homage to Captain John Grant, who in 1700 realised the potential of Easter Elchies Estate, the site of The Macallan whisky distillery since 1824. He set new standards of excellence, and his story reflects The Macallan’s heritage, craftsmanship and pursuit of uncompromised excellence for nearly 200 years.

Born in 1659 in a remote location on the banks of the River Spey, John Grant had a military career in his youth, became a captain and fought in the war. The Grants had owned the land since 1543, but it was on John’s return from war, that he transformed the wild landscape he had inherited into the ‘garden of Elchies’, the birthplace of The Macallan. A natural farmer, John worked the land to create the perfect conditions for growing barley and his labours helped to sustain a small farming community that would one day use its crops to distil whisky. In 1700, he extended and refurbished Easter Elchies House which is now The Macallan’s Spiritual Home.

Tales of The Macallan Volume I is crafted by Lead Whisky Maker, Sarah Burgess, to honour John Grant’s legacy. Distilled in 1950 and bottled in 2021, it is a distinctive and rare expression with exceptional flavour and character.

Each of these people left their mark on The Macallan with their unique contribution and legacy alive in our brand’s DNA and in every drop of our whisky to this day.

“Tales of The Macallan Volume I is a tribute to Captain John Grant, who paved the way for The Macallan and brought the influence of nature and community spirit. As custodians of the Estate, we are continuously inspired by our environment, upholding our responsibility to nurture and protect the wonderful natural habitat that is home to our distillery.

“Just like The Macallan Estate and Easter Elchies House, this precious whisky echoes of a very old tale. Wood spices, sweet wood smoke and antique oak are omnipresent and make a perfect liaison with the delicate symphony of ripe fruits and spices.”

Encased in a handcrafted Lalique crystal decanter, this single malt is concealed within an extraordinary almanac book. A work of art, each chapter tells the story of John Grant and features illustrations by Andrew Davidson. United by a dedication to craftsmanship and creativity, The Macallan collaborated with the illustrator, renowned for his traditional print techniques using wood engravings, to create a collection of hand-crafted illustrations depicting Captain John Grant’s story.

The Macallan also combined the skills of master craftsmen in crystal, leather and paper to create the unique packaging. Long-standing partner Lalique fashioned the flawless crystal decanter etched with one of Davidson’s illustrations. Attracted by a shared sense of heritage, craftsmanship and creativity, Lalique and The Macallan first came together in 2005 and since then have collaborated on a range of exquisite decanters and products. Tales of The Macallan marks the next chapter in this long-standing partnership and is a testament to the two houses’ shared quest for excellence.

Traditional London-based bookbinders, Shepherds, Sangorski & Sutcliffe and Zaehnsdorf, created the unique book, hand-crafted using luxurious leather and 24ct gold leaf, to conceal the decanter within its pages, and artisan printer, Imprimerie du Marais in Paris, expertly printed each individual page. 

An animation featuring some of Davidson’s illustrations and set to an original piece of music composed by Nicola Benedetti has been created to bring to life the story of John Grant.

Limited to 350 decanters worldwide, Tales of The Macallan Volume I has an RRSP of $80,000 / £60,000 / €65,000 and will be available at The Macallan Estate, The Macallan Boutiques and premium off-trade retailers from August 2021.

ABV: 44.6%

Nose: Grapefruit zest, antique oak, vanilla, melon, wood smoke, nutmeg, ripe plum and almond.

Palate: Peach and apple, wood spice with ginger and hints of clove, sweet wood smoke and Yuzu.

The Hart family have been licensed victuallers and publicans in Paisley on the outskirts of Glasgow since the 18th century, but it was in 1964 that brothers Iain & Donald Hart incorporated the company as Wine & Spirit Wholesalers and Scotch Whisky Blenders. Alistair Hart, who still selects casks for this special line today, came on as Chief Blender in 1975. His charge at the time was to secure and select the finest casks of single malt that were not readily available to the market. Their commitment to excellence is second to none in the industry and they’ve built a reputation for acquiring high quality stocks and bottling exceptional single casks. The wonderful Glenallachie distillery has come into focus after its recent sale to industry veteran Billy Walker. This lovely cask was bottled in 2015 before the change in ownership without chillfilteration or coloring at a cask strength of 56.7%. This is listed as aged for 19 years in American oak, but there are obvious sherry flavors here. A gorgeous chestnut color with a nose of dark cocoa, medium roast arabica, bright stone fruit and mint. A powerful palate of spicy oak, dark red fruit and a slight nuttiness. Definitely on the drier side of sherried ‘allachie, but overtly delightful and an absolutely exceptional price point for the quality and rarity of barrels this age. Only 180 bottles available of this excellent cask.
