anCnoc 2009 Vintage unveiled for global market – Scotch Whisky News

anCnoc 2009 Vintage unveiled for global market

This special limited-edition expression proudly showcases the heritage and skill of Knockdhu’s small distillery team in creating a distinctive yet approachable whisky, with passion, tradition and craftsmanship distilled into every bright golden drop.anCnoc Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky today (26th October) celebrates the latest release from its acclaimed vintages collection with the unveiling of anCnoc 2009 Vintage.

A delicate spicy, woody nose combines with anCnoc’s classic honey and citrus notes, demonstrating the time that this beautiful malt has spent quietly maturing in a combination of first-fill Spanish oak butts and ex-bourbon American oak barrels. With each sip, drinkers can look forward to delicious flavours of rich spice, sweet green apple, dark chocolate and butterscotch, with a smooth finish.

Vintage 2009 comes with anCnoc’s stylish, contemporary packaging, with touches of electric blue added for the new expression. It is non-chill filtered with natural colour and is available from specialist retailers only – with the release perfectly timed for whisky drinkers looking for a new, beautifully crafted dram to enjoy or gift over the festive season.

anCnoc is crafted at Knockdhu Distillery in the small village of Knock, by Huntly in Aberdeenshire, where Distillery Manager Gordon Bruce and his long-standing team dedicate themselves to the traditional craft of making excellent whisky.

Gordon commented: ‘We’ve been waiting twelve years for this vintage and it has definitely been worth the wait. This is a dram that has all the light, fresh qualities of anCnoc that are so loved by our drinkers, but there’s also a rich spiciness and complexity from its time in the casks.

‘It’s always a joy to release a new whisky out into the world. I’m particularly proud that the character of this new vintage captures the way we do things at Knockdhu, and the traditions we hold dear, yet it still tastes like a very modern single malt.

anCnoc 2009 Vintage will be a real treat for whisky drinkers looking for something a little bit different to explore, or as a special addition to the Christmas list of anyone who appreciates a well-crafted single malt’.

anCnoc 2009 Vintage is bottled in 70cl at 46% ABV, non-chilled filtered and with natural colour. Only 1,320 cases are available for UK and global markets, sold through independent and specialist retailers and whisky shops from today, RRP £50.

ABOUT ANCNOC

anCnoc is produced at Knockdhu Distillery, which sits in the shadow of the ‘Black Hill’ (Knockdhu in Gaelic) near Huntly in Aberdeenshire. It was established in 1894 by the pioneering John Morrison, after he spotted an abundance of the natural resources needed to make fine malt whisky in the area: pure spring water and plentiful supplies of peat and barley.

Today, Knockdhu is known as one of the smallest and most enchanting distilleries in the Scottish Highlands, producing a refreshingly modern single malt whisky with the most traditional skills and processes. The Black Hill continues to supply pure water for the whisky making process. The distillery’s two copper pot stills replicate the original 1894 design, their bulbous bases giving anCnoc its light, fresh, fruity flavour. Old fashioned worm tubs are used to condense the vaporised alcohol. And Distillery Manager Gordon Bruce, and his team – known as the ‘Men of Knock’ – make up one of the smallest workforces in any distillery (including two dogs!)

anCnoc’s first foray into peated whisky began back in 2014 with the launch of a new ‘Peaty’ range, inspired by the whiskies made early in Knockdhu’s history using local peated barley.

Scotch Malt Whisky Society JOIN THE REVELATION – Scotch Whisky News

JOIN THE REVELATION

Every cask bottled by the Society is unique, but every so often, a cask or two come along which stray even further from the ‘norm’.

One such example came from distillery 16, with spirit which had fully matured in a port pipe – an extremely active cask that gifted the whisky an intensely rich flavour and colour over the 18 years it spent there.

Despite this being unusual, the Society’s spirit of curiosity was still not satisfied, so we decided to experiment a bit further. Our understanding of maturation led us to believe that this whisky would lend itself well to time in sherry wood, so we divided up the liquid and moved some to an oloroso cask and the rest to a PX hoggie.

The different character of those two sherries have made their own mark on each whisky, meaning that each cask has further developed in different and interesting ways, despite the whisky’s shared origin. We’ve now bottled both of these casks and are making them available as an exclusive pair, so that you can enjoy exploring the similarities and contrasts between them. Get ready – you’re about to experience a flavour revelation.

KENTUCKY DISTILLERS’ ASSOCIATION WELCOMES AUGUSTA DISTILLERY AS NEWEST CRAFT MEMBER – American Whiskey News

KENTUCKY DISTILLERS’ ASSOCIATION WELCOMES AUGUSTA DISTILLERY AS NEWEST CRAFT MEMBER

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky Distillers’ Association today announced that Augusta Distillery in Bracken County is the newest and 48th member of the nonprofit trade group that unites and leads Kentucky’s signature Bourbon and distilled spirits industry.

The Augusta Distillery sits on the limestone banks of the small Kentucky river town for which it is named. The city is widely known as the hometown of actor George Clooney and his famous family. The county dates to the 18th century and was named for explorer William Bracken, a contemporary of Daniel Boone.

Augusta Distillery’s historic 35,000-square-foot building, built in 1883, originally served as a carriage manufacturer. The distillery received its Class B distiller’s license in July and is currently under renovation at 207 Seminary Avenue, just blocks from its sister restaurant, the Beehive Augusta Tavern.

A full-service restaurant, event center, gift shop and tasting room is expected to open in fall 2022.

The company’s debut product is Buckner’s Single Barrel Bourbon, a limited 13-year-old cask strength release named for Revolutionary War hero Capt. Philip Buckner. Following his years of service in the Virginia Militia, Buckner was awarded 7,000 acres along the Ohio River that ultimately became the city of Augusta.

“Augusta Distillery is excited to be a part of the KDA, whose members represent most of the Bourbon produced in the world. Our hope is to bring the Bourbon expansion to our small historic Augusta community while showcasing our beautiful section of the Ohio river,” said Ryan Edwards, Head of Operations for Augusta Distillery.

KDA President Eric Gregory said Edwards and the Augusta team are developing an ambitious and impressive distilling and tourism campus that will be a “can’t miss” stop in Northern Kentucky and The B-Line experience.

“Augusta is one of the most charming towns in Kentucky, and its namesake distillery is building on the community’s deep roots and legacy of hospitality,” he said. “We proudly welcome them to our growing family of Kentucky’s finest distillers.”

Learn more at www.augustakydistillery.com.

Augusta Distillery is the KDA’s 28th Craft-level member, aging less than 10,000 barrels a year. Augusta is now home to two KDA member distillers, with nearby B. Bird Distillery’s site that dates back to 1797 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Founded in 1880, the KDA is the voice for Bourbon and spirits issues. Its diverse membership produces the overwhelming majority of the world’s Bourbon, from legendary, global brands to emerging micro distilleries that are building the next generation of the timeless craft.

Kentucky Bourbon is one of the Commonwealth’s most historic industries, a thriving $8.6 billion economic and tourism engine that generates more than 20,100 jobs with an annual payroll topping $1 billion each year, and accounts for over $300 million in local and state taxes and $1.8 billion in federal alcohol taxes.

A key export, the iconic industry is currently in the middle of a $5.1 billion building boom, from innovative new tourism experiences to expanded production facilities, bottling centers and aging warehouses, all to meet the growing global thirst for Kentucky Bourbon.

Kentucky now boasts more than 10.3 million barrels of Bourbon aging in warehouses across the Bluegrass, the most in its revered distilling history. Distillers filled more than 2.4 million barrels last year alone, the third year in a row that production topped the two million mark.

Attendance at the KDA’s Kentucky Bourbon Trail® and Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour® distilleries has skyrocketed more than 300 percent in the last 10 years. Total attendance in 2019 was nearly two million, the most since KDA founded the tours in 1999 and 2012, respectively.

The Kentucky Distillers’ Association is a 501(c)(6) non-profit trade association that passionately unites, promotes, protects and elevates the Commonwealth’s signature Bourbon and distilled spirits industry. Johnnie Walker Ghost & Rare Pittyvaich at The Whisky Exchange – Scotch Whisky News

The fourth release in this much-loved series is here – Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost & Rare Pittyvaich.

Crafted by master blender Jim Beveridge and his team, this limited-edition bottling is focused on Pittyvaich in Speyside, which closed in 1993, as well as the lost grain distilleries of Port Dundas and Carsebridge. Along with the ghost distilleries, the team also brought in whiskies from Auchroisk, Cragganmore, Mannochmore, Strathmill and Royal Lochnagar to reinforce Pittyvaich’s uniquely funky and fruity style.

The result is a whisky that combines the autumnal character of Pittyvaich with the delicate sweetness and spice of well-aged grain whiskies – a fruity palate of fresh apples and berries supported by notes of vanilla, honeycomb and cinnamon. A must for Johnnie Walker fans and an excellent continuation of this sought-after series.

Legends Reimagined – Introducing Bowmore® No Corners to Hide – Scotch Whisky News

Legends Reimagined – Introducing Bowmore® No Corners to Hide

The first in a new series pairing the artistry of graphic illustration – from acclaimed artist Frank Quitely – with whisky making to reinterpret an ancient Islay myth

October 11, 2021 – For over 240 years, Bowmore Distillery has been capturing the essence of Islay from the shores of its remote island home. But the island itself has a far-reaching history peppered with the most intriguing of myths and legends. Rich stories tell of a bygone era that are no less captivating now, as they were then. Today, in an all-new series, Bowmore celebrate this legacy and the rich legends of its hometown with the unveiling of two new whiskies in the first release of Bowmore No Corners to Hide. An intriguing collaboration between acclaimed graphic artist Frank Quitely, who has illustrated for Marvel and DC Comics, and Bowmore’s Master Blender Ron Welsh, to create a visual and sensory masterpiece.

Taking inspiration from this ancient Islay myth, each bottle in the collaboration features exclusive designs and artwork from Frank Quitely, illustrating the story from Bowmore’s island home and embodying the artistic expression of Bowmore’s style. The limited-edition series features two stunning single malts  aged 23 and 32 year old, which are exclusively available in selected travel retail destinations.

The Whisky
The 23-Year-Old began its journey with 21 years nurtured in ex-bourbon American oak hogsheads, to create the signature style of Bowmore. Two years of further maturation followed in Essencia® barriques creating a distinctive character alluding to, and conjuring up, a sensory exploration of this definitive tale combines. This captures a hint of beeswax, a scent of incense and a struck match to transport the senses to Bowmore’s round church.  Whilst sweet flavours of golden syrup, acacia honey and marzipan combine with the unmistakable subtle peat smoke, adding tingling medicinal and spice to the nose. Each bottle is decorated with illustrations and sketches from Frank Quitely, further bringing the story to life.

The 32-Year-Old captures a moment in time; a story as captivating as the myth it celebrates.  An initial 30 years of maturation in ex-bourbon American oak hogsheads reflects a timely occupation in cask, much like the devil’s own alleged escape, followed by two further years in Essencia® barriques to bring an unusually distinctive character to the fore, again combining beeswax, incense and struck match.  Evolving to Seville orange peel merged with the aromas of an old cigar box, but with sweet and floral interjections end finishing with a touch of liquorice and iodine, intriguing and ingenious in equal measure. Each bottle comes complete with a signed print from Quitely, alongside original sketches and notes from the whisky making process.

On the whisky making process Master Blender Ron Welsh said “Much like the devil, both aged spirits took their own particularly unusual defining journey in Essencia® barriques, a peculiarly rare ‘Rose Oak’ dating back to the 1830s. The tasting notes reflect the notes from the story and in each sip transport you to that cold winter’s night.”

The Myth
Through his inspiring creative lens, Frank reinterprets this story; paying homage to a legend which has shaped the village of Bowmore and our distillery home.  As the story goes, back in 1837, on a clear winter’s evening, the devil visited the church in Bowmore. This is no ordinary church.  Strikingly round in shape, purposely built, in preparation for such a visit as there were no corners in which the devil could hide.   Despite the best efforts of the local congregation who chased the devil from the church to the Bowmore distillery where they bolted the gates and locked the doors,  the search proved fruitless and the devil had vanished. That night, The Maid of Islay, a small paddle steamer used for transporting Bowmore whisky, was loaded with casks for the mainland. The devil was never found, but it’s believed that he hid himself in a cask, where ironically, there too are no corners to hide.

Calling on his earliest memories of Scottish folklore, Quitely is no stranger to the role of the devil in many an epic tale. Today thirty years since his creative journey began, his status as a master storyteller is cemented in the world of graphic illustration and his accolades are themselves awe-inspiring.  “To get the call from Bowmore, a legendary icon in the world of whisky, was offering me the opportunity of retelling the Islay Legend No Corners to Hide was hugely exciting” says Quitely.  He continues, “And to do this in a single image would prove massively challenging but taking inspiration in the Devil himself, it’s all in the detail.”

Bowmore No Corners to Hide is available exclusively in select Global Travel Retail outlets including Heathrow, Amsterdam Schipol, Dubai and Singapore Chaingi at an RSP of $400 23-year-old and $2,995 32-year-old. Today marks the first release in the collaboration and will see a number of stories come to life over the coming years, regaling tales from Bowmore’s legendary past.

ABOUT BOWMORE®
For over 240 years, the Bowmore Distillery has been capturing the essence of Islay from the shores of its remote island home. Shaped by centuries of skill and tradition, Bowmore’s single malt harnesses the power of this time in every single drop, defined by the past and savoured in the present.

Time is defining at Bowmore® and we tirelessly harness the power of time to shape our whiskies. Our distillery’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of our fruity and smoky single malts. Today, we are amongst one of a few distilleries which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by a traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery.  Water for the whiskies is specially drawn from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones – the same Islay peat that fires the malt-drying kiln.

Bowmore® Distillery’s proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of its spirit and gives a hint of sea air to the character. The legendary Bowmore® No. 1 Vaults is where most of the whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault’s sea-facing wall.

Matured in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry, or claret, over time developing rich and mellow flavours until the expertise of our whisky makers deems them ready for bottling.  It is this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people, and tradition that makes Bowmore the exceptional single malt it is today.

Time is marked on each and every bottle of Bowmore, proudly and boldly as a marker of where and when each one’s journey began.  This is our story of time. This is Bowmore; the Art of Time since 1779.

Wyoming Whiskey releases Single Barrel Bourbon – American Whiskey News

Wyoming Whiskey releases Single Barrel Bourbon

KIRBY, WY (October 20, 2021)Wyoming Whiskey’s Single Barrel Bourbon is available once again. This highly anticipated and exclusive release is the first batch since it last sold out in November 2020. Single Barrel represents the top 1% of bourbon barrels sampled each year by Wyoming Whiskey.

Single Barrel is a rich, medium to full-bodied spirit defined by its western terroir. As a wheated bourbon, it delivers a flavor profile that is soft, yet complex, which sets it apart from more common rye-flavored single barrel products. The superb flavor profile, and limited availability, create a truly rare experience.

“Once in a hundred barrels, or so, something very special presents itself,” said David DeFazio, Co-Founder of Wyoming Whiskey. “These barrels are selected for their exceptional aromatic profiles, complex flavor, maturity, and overall balance.”

Crafted from grains grown right in the Bighorn Basin, Single Barrel’s terroir reflects what the West is made of: intense elements, severe temperatures, and the rich history of Western pioneers. Each barrel of Single Barrel experiences extreme temperature variations common in the high basin between the Absaroka and Bighorn Mountains as it matures. Temperatures reach 135° at the height of the warehouse during the summer and fall precipitously to 5° degrees in the depths of Winter. In the summertime, warehouse temperatures can swing 20 – 30 degrees and facilitate greater whiskey and wood interaction.

Each hand-selected barrel is bottled at 96 proof to maintain the character which defines it. Aged for a minimum of five years in char #4 oak barrels, no two barrels are alike in flavor. Chosen from six rickhouses for its singular character and taste, each barrel yields approximately 220 bottles that capture this unique bourbon and moment in time, both of which will never happen again. Cheers to those who are lucky enough to cross its path.

Tasting Notes:

  • Color: Deep copper to mahogany

  • Nose: Bittersweet dark chocolate, roasted almonds, and browned butter range to dried dates with orange citrus blossom

  • Palate: Cinnamon, dark chocolate, dried date, fig, and raisin range to a buttered pastry and orange citrus

  • Finish: Long, smooth and eloquent finish with flavor notes including dark dried fruits and candied orange peel

Wyoming Whiskey Single Barrel specifications: 48% ABV, MSRP $99, aged for a minimum of 5 years

Single Barrel may be found at local retailers in twelve U.S. markets, including: Wyoming, Illinois, California, Colorado, New York, Georgia, Arizona, New Mexico, Maine, Idaho, Florida and South Carolina. It can also be purchased nationally through WyomingWhiskey.com or other online retailers, including Reserve Bar, Flaviar and Caskers. About Wyoming Whiskey

Born on the land where the Bighorn River carves out the Big Horn Basin, the Mead Family Ranch proudly distills Wyoming Whiskey. Crafted from corn, barley, and wheat and shaped by the harsh elements of the West, six rickhouses house the oak barrels, aging the spirits to exceptional levels.
