Blended malts offer the best of all worlds: the complexity that comes with multiple distilleries, and the bold intensity of malt whisky. Dirt Turf is one from independent bottler Curious Spirits that adds an extra wave of interest: all the malts were distilled on Islay. It’s a smoky powerhouse, with charred peat and maritime air notes giving way to a honeyed sweetness. It’s as evocative as it is intense – and delicious, too.

Tasting notes:

Nose: Sea spray, peat smoke, honey, citrus
Palate: Smoky warmth, brine, sweet malt
Finish: Long and exceptionally peaty.

The wonderful Craigellachie distillery remains underappreciated outside of core group of diehard fans. It’s oily rich character can be exceptional both in sherry and when aged in fresh bourbon barrel like this one. The old home of Dewar’s, this distillery isn’t Speyside’s prettiest but it is one of its best. Just across the river from the Macallan on the road to Dufftown, the old plant continues to produce full flavored rich malt of the highest quality. This little barrel was distilled in 2008 and filled into a fresh bourbon barrel for 15 years before being bottled at full cask strength without chillfiltration or coloring of any kind. Expect a fruity fragrant side of Craigellachie -Peaches, apple, and fresh fragrant floral aromas. The palate is full of spice, pears and fudge.

Crafted exclusively from single malts matured in ex Oloroso sherry casks, it reflects the rich character that defines the series.

Velvet Fig 12 Year Old is created from a careful selection of single malts chosen for their natural richness and structure. Extended maturation in ex Oloroso sherry casks develops layers of ripe fig, dark berries, chocolate and warm spice, all brought together in a naturally rich, velvety texture.

A very special bottling to mark the 80th anniversary of the world-renowned Philharmonia Orchestra, this sumptuous, single malt Macduff has been aged for 16 long years in a third-fill sherry butt. The result? An exactingly balanced yet elegantly expressive dessert-like Highland Scotch. A celebration of the harmony shared by music and whisky, it’s a decadent, satisfyingly full-bodied bottling perfect for the convivialities. We’re proud to partner with the Philharmonia on this release, which, with 80 years celebrated as an oak anniversary, feels especially fitting.

Tasting note:

Nose: Initially quite light and bright, with fruity cereal notes soon emerging. Raisins, fig rolls, toffee apples and pastries bring richness, while lemon sherbet sweets and cut grass contribute a more aromatic quality.

Palate: A bold, round palate sees milk chocolate combine with fresh fruit, pain au chocolat pastries, Eccles cake, butterscotch, toasted hazelnuts, milk chocolate and cumin.

Finish: Long and lingering, with drying oak spices, cocoa nibs and earthy tones.

Rare Character has consistently offered K&L some of the most exciting and intriguing barrel picks over the last several years. The small blender and bottler has expanded its reputation exponentially by offering a huge array of extremely high quality offerings to stores, bars, and clubs through the country. Each lot of barrels is hand selected for its quality and unique character. This could be the very best we’ve had yet. Drawn from the top floors of the undiclosed distillery from where it came, this lot as been dubbed “High Floors” or HF, each aged for over 8 years in the hottest most intense part of the warehouse. The mashbill is a classic 13% rye with 78% corn and 9% malted barley and while the distiller isn’t disclosed, many will try to guess the profile based on the mashbill and be very wrong. Dense charred sugar and raisinated fruit, with huge leather-y savory notes to balance the intense sweetness. This is some of the biggest juice in the bottle right now and the custom art was made by an actual artist – not a computer.
