LIMITED-EDITION WHISKY’S SPECTACLE OF FLAVOURS BRINGS THE SPIRIT OF THE CIRCUS TO ARDBEG DAY – Islay Scotch Whisky News

LIMITED-EDITION WHISKY’S SPECTACLE OF FLAVOURS
BRINGS THE SPIRIT OF THE CIRCUS TO ARDBEG DAY

First Ardbeg aged in port casks sets the stage for a show stopping celebration in 2024-

Held annually on the final Saturday of Islay’s Festival of Music and Malt (Fèis Ìle), Ardbeg Day is a global celebration of all things Ardbeg. This year, festivities will take a show-stopping turn at the Distillery and around the world on Saturday 1st June, as Ardbeg marks the occasion with one of its most eclectic experiments to date – Ardbeg Spectacular.

The Distillery’s first whisky aged in port casks, this avant-garde limited edition showcases a spectacle of flavours never before tasted at Ardbeg. Vaulting on to the shoulders of classic bourbon-matured Ardbeg, whisky wholly matured in these port barrels brings a tumbling richness and an acrobatic twist of colour to the Islay malt. Dark chocolate cartwheels across the palate, mint walks the high wire, while aromas of candied fruit, incense candles and smoked pecans swing by on the trapeze.

Taking inspiration from the whisky’s deep, dark cavalcade of flavours — as sensational as any carnival act — the Islay single malt is inviting fans to join its very own “Dark Circus” on Ardbeg Day. For one day only, at the Distillery and at local events across the globe, whisky fans can delve into an offbeat and smoky Ardbeggian take on the circus, through intriguing tastings, outlandish games and an extravaganza of peaty delights.

Gillian Macdonald, Ardbeg Master Blender, said: “Ardbeg Spectacular is a high-flying spirit, very befitting of Ardbeg Day. Its years in bourbon and port casks create a spectacle of flavours, the like of which Ardbeggians will never have tasted before. We invite fans to roll up and feast their palates on its peculiar notes of mint chocolate, incense, lavender and smoked nuts, set off by a daring double act of salted caramel and tar. Like the finest performances in the circus ring, this is a whisky not to be missed.”

Jackie Thomson, Distillery Visitor Centre Manager and Ringmaster Extraordinaire, said: “This Ardbeg Day we will celebrate our whisky in the most spectacular style – from this new limited edition, to our core range favourites like Ardbeg Ten Years Old. I’m looking forward to entering into the spirit of the circus with fans at the Distillery, online and across the globe on 1st June, as we come together to juggle big, bold smoky flavours and marvel at the phenolic phenomenon that is Ardbeg!”

Ardbeg Spectacular will be available in the UK and on Ardbeg.com from 23rd April, RRP: £110. It will then be available in other markets from late April onwards.

Ardbeg Spectacular Tasting Notes:

ABV:                46%

Colour:           Sunset Orange

Aroma:           Curiously perfumed and aromatic, a big top note of fragrant lavender tumbles into vetiver and incense candles. Down below, deeper notes of leather and wax dance alongside a rich almond nuttiness. A splash of water reveals gentle wisps of woodsmoke and damp peat moss. Hints of menthol hurl headlong into rich antique leather.

Taste:              A viscous mouthfeel bursts forth to introduce a sparkling array of salty, sweet, and savoury flavours. Peat smoke, eucalyptus oil, minty chocolate and toffee mingle with smoked pecans, creosote, and tar. Subtle sweet pear crumble and fudge lurk in the background.

Finish:              Finally, a long and lingering finale of salted caramel and cooling menthol brings this show stopping spectacle of flavour to a close.

Ardbeg

Ardbeg prides itself on being The Ultimate Islay Malt Whisky. Established in 1815, Ardbeg is revered by connoisseurs around the world as the peatiest, smokiest and most complex of all the Islay malts. Despite its smokiness, Ardbeg is renowned for its delicious sweetness, a phenomenon that has affectionately become known as ‘the peaty paradox’. During the 1980s and 1990s, Ardbeg suffered from an uncertain future, and it was not until the brand was purchased by The Glenmorangie Company in 1997 that the Distillery was saved from extinction. Since then, the Distillery has risen like a phoenix and today Ardbeg is well-established as a niche, cult malt, with a passionate following. Today, Ardbeg is one of the world’s most highly awarded smoky single malt whiskies.

The Ardbeg Committee

The legacy of the whisky was safeguarded in 2000 by the formation of the Ardbeg Committee.  The Committee is made up of thousands of Ardbeg followers worldwide who are keen to ensure that “the doors of Ardbeg never close again”. Today there are more than 180,000 members of the Ardbeg Committee in over 130 countries.  Committee Members are regularly consulted on new bottlings and expressions and are offered exclusive Committee bottlings.  Members also receive invitations to special gatherings, tastings and events.  The Committee, chaired by Jackie Thomson, is free to join at ardbeg.com.

J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery Releases Commemorative Military Bottles to Kick Off New Sunday Hours and Expanded Tasting Experience

J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery Releases Commemorative Military Bottles to Kick Off New Sunday Hours and Expanded Tasting Experience

Combat Infantry Badge Bottles Support Forgotten Coast K9

FRANKFORT, KY (April 18, 2024) – J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery, created by Jeff Mattingly, a descendant of distilling pioneer John Graves Mattingly, is releasing its highly anticipated Combat Infantry Badge (CIB) Bourbon this Sunday, April 21st, as it kicks off new Sunday visitation hours.  Also making its debut is an additional tasting experience which includes tastings straight from the barrel.

The CIB Bourbon is the latest bourbon release in J. Mattingly 1845’s CIB series.  Combat Infantry Badges are awarded to Army enlisted infantry or special forces officers in the grade of Colonel or below who were engaged in active ground combat.  Each year J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery donates a portion of the sales of the CIB bottles to a military-related nonprofit.  This year’s recipient is Forgotten Coast K9, a nonprofit organization that helps provide service dogs to veterans and first responders with the mission to stop suicide in those communities by getting them the service dogs they need.

The 2024 CIB bourbon was aged for six and a half years and bottled at 116 proof.  It has a smokey, brown sugar and banana nose with hints of sweet tobacco and baking spices.  On the palate, expect banana, oak and brown sugar forward, with leathery oak on the mid palate and a finish of sweet tobacco and baking spices.

J.Mattingly 1845 Distillery has not released a CIB bourbon since 2021, and historically the bottles have sold out quickly.  The first initial 50 bottles of the 2024 release were released during its National Pet Day Festival on April 13 and were met with eager anticipation.  The remaining 450 bottles will be available upon opening on Sunday, April 21st at noon.  Suggested retail pricing for a 750 mL of CIB is $155, with $30 of each bottle sale going to Forgotten Coast K9.

In addition to new Sunday hours, guests can now enjoy a new tasting experience allowing them to taste whiskey straight from the barrel.  Now, guests have three different tasting opportunities when visiting J. Mattingly 1845:

  • Heritage Tasting Experience – taste up to six different whiskies from J. Mattingly 1845, including the 90-proof and 100-proof bourbons that started it all, and the latest proprietary blends.  But if you like something, you better grab a bottle of it, as the proprietary blends are made in very small batches and are custom creations by the in-house blending experts, never to be repeated.  The cost of the Heritage Tasting Experience is $20 and it lasts about 20 minutes
  • Single Barrel Tasting Experience  – This is the newest addition to the J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery guest adventure and it allows visitors to taste straight from seven of barrels.  Each barrel selected for the tasting has been carefully vetted by the expert blenders at J. Mattingly 1845, and has undergone the proprietary double-staving process, which adds charred staves to aging bourbon barrels twice during the blending process to create unmatched flavors.  The cost of the Barrel Tasting Experience is $55 and it lasts a half hour.
  • VIP Custom Bourbon Blending Experience – A bourbon connoisseur’s dream – allowing you to become a master blender for a day, choosing your own blend, bottle shape, custom label and even the wax color on the top.  Starting with four pre-selected barrels, you will mix and blend the flavors under the expert guidance of the J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery team, then choose the other elements in the packaging and leave that day with your unique creation. No two bottles will ever be the same.  The VIP Custom Blending Experience is $175 and takes approximately one hour.  Additional bottles of your custom blend may be purchased for $120.  Reservations are recommended for this experience.

“Throughout the year we have special releases that benefit many worthy nonprofit organizations,” said Jeff Mattingly, chief executive officer and founder, J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery.  “The CIB release is always one of my favorites, as it honors Army veterans who saw combat on the ground, definitely heroes in my book.  And to partner with Forgotten Coast K9 to help provide service dogs to military veterans and first responders just makes the release even more special .”

The CIB Bourbon will be available on-site at the Distillery and also online, with shipping to 45 U.S. states.  J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery’s operating hours are Monday – Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday Noon – 6 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome for the tasting experiences, but reservations are suggested for the VIP Custom Bourbon Blending Experience.  The Distillery is located at 20 Reilly Road in Frankfort, Ky.

HATOZAKI WHISKY ANNOUNCES NEWEST ADDITION TO LIMITED “OMAKASE” SERIES: HATOZAKI OMAKASE RYE THIRD EDITION MIZUNARA CASK FINISH – Japanese Whisky News

HATOZAKI WHISKY ANNOUNCES NEWEST ADDITION TO

LIMITED “OMAKASE” SERIES:

HATOZAKI OMAKASE RYE THIRD EDITION MIZUNARA CASK FINISH

Exclusive to the US market, the latest innovation is finished in Japanese Mizunara casks hand-selected by Master Distiller Kimio Yonezawa

New York, NY –  (April 12, 2024)Hatozaki Whisky is pleased to announce the third and latest addition to its “Omakase” Series – Hatozaki Omakase Rye Third Edition Mizunara Cask Finish. Now available in the US for a suggested retail price of $95 (750ml), the new limited-edition expression showcases the profound aging and finishing techniques of Kimio Yonezawa, 4th generation Master Distiller & Blender.

Produced at the Kaikyō Distillery on the shores of the Seto Inland Sea, the Hatozaki Omakase collection was born of Yonezawa-san’s vision to create elegant and genuine whiskies that reflect the character of his family distillery’s unique terroir and maritime influences. Honoring the age-old Japanese concept of “Omakase,” known as “chef’s choice” in Japanese dining, the “Omakase” collection mirrors the idea of trusting the maker’s intuition – allowing for delightful experimentation of flavors and new exploration.

“I am honored to introduce the newest blend in our Omakase Collection to the US market,” says Yonezawa-san. “I was excited to experiment with the flavors of rye, a popular category with American whisky drinkers, and see how they would respond to native Japanese oak influence. We are thrilled with the final blend and confident it will be a surprising and rewarding choice for the seeker of exciting new whiskies to try.”

In that spirit, Kimio Yonezawa presents an innovative new blend consisting of rye whisky, that is aged in new charred oak and then finished in Japanese Mizunara casks, the rare Japanese white oak sourced from the Hokkaido and Tohoku forests. This expression will be limited to less than 3,000 bottles, each numbered and sold exclusively in the US market.

Hatozaki Omakase Rye Third Edition Mizunara Cask Finish is a testament to the seasoned artistry of the Yonezawa family aging tradition, crafted in small batches of no more than 10 casks. The blend, consisting of at least 51% rye, is aged in new charred oak and then finished in traditional Mizunara casks. This dual maturation allows the Mizunara to impart its distinctive character, resulting in notes of sandalwood, coconut, and Japanese incense – a refined encounter with Japanese elegance.

The new product joins Hatozaki’s core range including: Hatozaki Finest Whisky ($45.99 ,750ml. bottle, 40% ABV) a blend of premium malt whiskies aged for up to 12 years in imported bourbon casks, imported sherry casks and native Sakura casks, the Japanese cherry wood; and Hatozaki Small Batch Whisky ($65.99, 750ml., 46% ABV), a vatting of 100% malt whiskies aged in imported bourbon casks, imported sherry casks, and native Mizunara oak barrels, yielding a rich profile of sweet cereals and malty dried fruit, with a light touch of smoke and honey on the finish.

HATOZAKI OMAKASE RYE THIRD EDITION MIZUNARA CASK FINISH, 42% ABV:

Color: Amber

Nose: Immediate rye cereal notes lead, accompanied by fresh oak spice and a hint of menthol. Develops with honeycomb, sawn wood, and tropical fruit. Concludes with yeasty bread and oak.

Mouth: Soft entry with a tickle of fire, mint, and black pepper. Transforms into a robust oaky flavor, soft spice, and a rounded finish. Lingering hints of coconut, orange peel, and cloves.

Style: Harmonious, full-bodied palate with nuanced layers of flavor.

Keeneland and Maker’s Mark® Announce New Series: “Greats of the Gate” Bottle Series Will Honor the Greatest Thoroughbreds of All Time Beginning with Man o’ War

Keeneland and Maker’s Mark® Announce New Series: “Greats of the Gate” Bottle Series Will Honor the Greatest Thoroughbreds of All Time Beginning with Man o’ War

The 10-Year Commemorative Bottle Series will Support Kentucky Nonprofits; Kentucky Harvest, Art Center of the Bluegrass & Blue Grass Farms Charities Named First

LEXINGTON, KY – Thursday, April 11th 2024 – Keeneland Race Course and Maker’s Mark® Kentucky Bourbon today announced a new chapter in their longstanding partnership with the launch of “Greats of the Gate,” a 10-year commemorative bottle series celebrating Thoroughbred racing’s most iconic horses – featuring a different horse each year.

Arriving this year in October exclusively at select Kentucky retailers, the inaugural bottle will honor the legendary Lexington-foaled Man o’ War, who competed from 1919 to 1920, winning 20 of 21 races, including the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, while establishing seven track records for speed over various distances.

“Keeneland and Maker’s Mark have a rich history of working hand-in-hand to support organizations making an impact in Kentucky,” said Rob Samuels, Managing Director of Maker’s Mark and eighth-generation whisky maker. “We’re honored to partner each year in such a meaningful way, dating back to when Keeneland was our first customer serving Maker’s Mark in the 1950s and setting the stage for decades of collaboration to follow.”

The limited-editon bottle features an illustration by Kentucky artist Tyler Robertson with artwork wrapping around the bottle in yellow and black – the racing colors for Man o’ War. The horse is shown on both sides of the bottle in streaks of yellow to connote him coming around the final turn and heading down the stretch to the finish. The bottle’s crown will be dipped in bright yellow wax and topped with a black silk ribbon. This bottle will be available in October exclusively at select Kentucky retailers that sell Maker’s Mark.

Proceeds from each year’s “Greats of the Gate” bottle will benefit nonprofits that support Kentucky culture, including the horseracing industry, hospitality and the arts. Over the course of the 10 years, Keeneland and Maker’s Mark are committed to raising $4 million for various Kentucky nonprofit organizations through this bottle series.

“Keeneland is proud to continue our longstanding partnership with Maker’s Mark to benefit both the Thoroughbred industry and our local communities,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “Keeneland and Maker’s Mark share a mission of service and philanthropy, and the commemorative bottles have been a fun way to engage our fans and support deserving organizations through the years.”

For the first three years of the 10-year series, the “Greats of the Gate” bottle will support Kentucky Harvest, Art Center of the Bluegrass and Blue Grass Farms Charities.  The Art Center of the Bluegrass connects people to art, culture, and creativity through exhibits, hands on art making, arts appreciation, and cultural experiences, while the mission of Kentucky Harvest is to end local hunger by connecting with food donors and engaging volunteers to rescue excess food and move it from those who have it to those in need.

Blue Grass Farms Charities (BGFC), which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, provides health and human services to those who work in the Central Kentucky Thoroughbred Industry, including a much-needed food assistance program. Proceeds from the Man o’ War bottle will support construction of a new food pantry located at The Thoroughbred Center (TTC) on Paris Pike, Keeneland’s year-round training facility, making it accessible to the greatest number of industry workers. BGFC continues to serve Fayette, Bourbon, Woodford, Scott and Jessamine area farms and facilities.

About Maker’s Mark® Kentucky Bourbon
In 1953, in Loretto, Ky., Bill Samuels, Sr., fulfilled his dream to create a handmade and delicious bourbon. He decided to make his whisky in small batches, using soft red winter wheat to enhance the softness and sweetness. He then rotated each barrel by hand for consistency and, finally, aged each barrel to taste.
