New in: Torabhaig 2018 Single Cask – The Whisky Exchange News

Torabhaig 2018 Scottish Oak Single Cask

From Skye’s second and newest distillery – the first built in over 190 years – Torabhaig 2018 Scottish Oak Single Cask is an exclusive release for The Whisky Exchange. Boldly coastal and smoky, it balances maritime intensity with a distinctive elegance. Drawn from a single hand-selected 2018 cask, this extremely limited bottling offers a rare glimpse into Torabhaig’s early character.

On the nose there’s sweet peat smoke and worn leather which lead into baked apples and caramel, layered with coastal notes and damp greenery. The palate brings pepper, lime peel and dark chocolate, finishing long with mint, gentle smoke and grassy freshness.

2008 Fettercairn 16 Year “The First Editions” Single Oloroso Sherry Butt Highland Single Malt ~ Scotch Whisky News

2008 Fettercairn 16 Year “The First Editions” Single Oloroso Sherry Butt Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

$99.99

Fettercairn Distillery was founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay, who converted a former corn mill into one of the earliest legally licensed whisky distilleries in Scotland after the Excise Act made licensed production feasible. He recruited experienced illicit distillers as his first stillmen and sold the estate just a few years later to the Gladstone family, whose son William Gladstone later influenced whisky taxation reforms. A major fire in 1887 led to a rebuild, and the distillery passed through various owners before being acquired by Whyte & Mackay in 1973, the company that still operates it today. Over more than two centuries Fettercairn has combined tradition with innovation, including a unique cooling system for its stills that shapes its light, fruity spirit. This beautiful single sherry butt of Fettercairn is extremely rare on the open market. The distillery is unique in several ways, but most notably due to the cooling ring around the still neck which increases reflux producing a very unique spirit. Finding a single Oloroso sherry butt bottled at Cask Strength of this special eastern highland’s distillery is so unusual, we’ve only once before been able to offer single sherry butt previously in our 40 year history. The style is extremely sherry forward with the dark chocolate, cherry and caramel sauce. Dense and full-bodied expect dark stewed fruits and a long finish of cocoa and sandalwood.

Johnnie Walker Vault x Olivier Rousteing: When the art of couture meets the art of blending – Scotch Whisky News

Johnnie Walker Vault x Olivier Rousteing: When the art of couture meets the art of blending

Acclaimed French creative director Olivier Rousteing announced as first cultural collaborator invited within Johnnie Walker Vault

In the first release of a two-part collaboration, Couture Expression is a collection of four couture blends inspired by a sensorial journey through the seasons

The world’s leading Scotch Whisky1, Johnnie Walker, has announced acclaimed French couture designer Olivier Rousteing as the first cultural partner under the Johnnie Walker Vault platform. Launched earlier this year, Johnnie Walker Vault is a new global luxury platform grounded in blending artistry – uniting bespoke blends, luxurious experiences and collaborations with cultural icons all under one visionary banner.

First Unveiling: Couture Expression

Couture Expression is the inaugural limited-edition release from the Johnnie Walker Vault, co-created by Johnnie Walker Master Blender Dr Emma Walker and Olivier Rousteing. Drawing inspiration from the world of high fashion, the collection elevates blending artistry into new dimensions through a seasonal interpretation, setting a new standard of luxury whisky creation.

Julie Bramham, Managing Director of Diageo Luxury Group, says, “Johnnie Walker Vault is allowing us to make our mark on the world of luxury spirits in an exciting new way, as well as opening the door to a new era of progress for the brand. Through colliding the blending artistry of Dr Emma Walker with the creative genius of Olivier Rousteing we are pushing the boundaries of what a luxury Scotch whisky can look, taste and feel like.”

“This has been an emotional journey,” says Rousteing. “What started as a collaboration to create one special release became a creative exploration of four seasons, just like a couture collection. For me, the seasons bring different energy and emotions – the feeling of rebirth in Spring, the hazy freedom of Summer, the self-reflection of Fall and the coziness of home and family in Winter – that Emma so beautifully captured in the collection.”

Couture Expression Blends

Each of the four blends in the collection begins with the same luxurious ‘heart’, including ghost whiskies from Brora and Port Dundas, setting a marker for the rarity of the collection. Dr. Walker then layered hand-selected whiskies from the Johnnie Walker Vault – a library of 500 rare, aged and ghost whiskies, personally curated and rotated from the very best of the 10 million casks of Scotch available to her as Master Blender. In an innovative fusion of creative minds, over the course of 12 months, Dr Walker translated Rousteing’s personal narrative into four sensorial journeys through flavour and time.

Dr Emma Walker says, “Olivier brought an emotional language to the blending creation, and we worked together to explore what whisky can express – technically, sensorially and artistically. We deliberately chose to use the same whiskies across several of the seasons, playing with proportions, textures and seasonal notes to create four distinct expressions of whiskies.”

The Couture Expression blends encompass:

  • Spring – Refreshing and floral. A celebration of renewal and transformation, with brightness drawn from a selection of rare whiskies including a 1985 Cragganmore, a rarely seen 1977 Caledonian and minerality from a treasured 1978 Port Ellen.
  • Summer – Vibrant. An ode to summer with tropical fruit notes from a selection of rare whiskies including an experimental Cardhu Wine Cask Finish, and a 1990 Clynelish wrapped in the richness of 1988 Benrinnes.
  • Fall – Textured and bold. A time of self-reflection and the relentless pursuit of excellence, this expression features an experimental Teaninich chocolate malt, layered with smoke from the 1978 Port Ellen.
  • Winter – Deep and contemplative. Reflecting ‘coming home’ and the warmth of sharing time and moments with family and friends. The richest of the four, dialling up Islay malts from Port Ellen and Brora with a mulled wine, sweetness from the 1988 Benrinnes.

Couture Expression Design

Each Couture Expression blend is treasured in a square crystal decanter handcrafted by artisans from the renowned French luxury house Baccarat, in homage to the iconic square bottle created by Alexander Walker in the late 1800s. The decanters have been draped in four different metallic shades, each inspired by the seasons, creating a nod to the past and a desire for an iconic and timeless progressive silhouette.

“I was really given the freedom to push boundaries with the bottle design, using the couture technique of drapé to capture the seasons in gold, silver, rose gold and metallic black. I wanted to create a structured armour reflecting strength and perseverance, but for it to be swathed like silk to bring softness and reveal the beautiful liquid inside. I hope these bottles will remain as pieces of art in the legacy of Johnnie Walker Vault,” said Rousteing.

Finally, each bottle is topped off with a sculptural wing stopper, the creative director’s articulation of the Johnnie Walker ‘Keep Walking’ ethos evolved into flight. All hallmarks which sing to Rousteing’s creative style, which he wanted to see live on as his contribution to the Johnnie Walker Vault and a future facing approach to whisky creation.

Couture Expression Launch

To celebrate the collaboration and the release of Johnnie Walker Vault x Olivier Rousteing Couture Expression, an exclusive launch event will be held in New York City on 3rd May, bringing together leading voices across the arts, fashion and whisky. Johnnie Walker Vault x Olivier Rousteing Couture Expression will be globally launched from 26th May with only 25 bottles of each season available worldwide.

Recommended retail price: $20,000

K&L California ‘A Rare Canadian Single Barrel Pick for Blanton’s Fans’ – Canadian Whisky News

Our First-Ever Caribou Crossing Barrel Pick
Caribou Crossing “K&L Exclusive”
Single Barrel #1329 Canadian Whisky (750ml)
($64.99)

“There’s something so inviting and friendly about this whisky that makes it dangerously easy to drink.” — David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer

Caribou Crossing Whisky has become such a sought-after gem in California that collectors snap up every bottle as soon as it hits the shelves. So, when they offered me the chance to select a barrel, it was an easy yes. After tasting thousands of single barrels of cask-strength bourbon, it was surprising to choose an 80-proof Canadian whisky. I’m so accustomed to the intensity of cask-strength bourbons that this felt like a new adventure.

When the barrel finally arrived, I was taken aback by the way the Sazerac apparatus labels their barrels. Not only did they include the distillation date—Christmas Eve 2017—but they also listed the mashbill as “bourbon,” which it definitely is not. However, it does contain at least 51% corn distillate, which piqued my interest. Unlike bourbon, these whiskies aren’t subject to the same stringent regulatory requirements regarding new oak, distillation temperatures, and more. But when I opened our first bottle, I was surprised to find an unmistakable maple note on the nose. Had they sweetened it with maple syrup? Of course not—that would be absurd. But there’s something so inviting and friendly about this whisky that makes it dangerously easy to drink.

This would be the perfect bottle to crack open on Christmas Eve. Not only can you tell your guests it was distilled exactly eight years earlier, but the winter vibes are undeniable. Let’s dive in: The color is a classic chestnut (1.2). The nose brings maple wood and sweet caramel to the forefront, with hints of winter spices and stone fruit adding complexity. It’s not overly spicy, just warm and inviting. The palate is soft and round, with a pronounced maple sweetness, subtle stone fruit, caramel candies and hints of clove-y spice. After a day of drinking cask-strength bourbon, this feels like a refreshing change. It’s whisky that will appeal to nearly everyone. It’s not boring or one-dimensional per se; it has enough character to be interesting, but it won’t knock you off your chair. It’s the kind of whisky that’ll make everyone at the table happy, and the striking elk on the top will capture everyone’s attention when you drop it on the table.

David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer

Caribou Crossing “K&L Exclusive” Single Barrel #1329 Canadian Whisky (750ml) ($64.99)

This rare, exclusive Caribou Crossing is the very first in K&L’s illustrious history. One of the very few Canadian single barrels on the market and indeed, it claims to be Canada’s very first single barrel whisky. Caribou has aptly been dubbed Canada’s answer to Blanton’s. Of course, just because there’s a cute little caribou on the cap does not make a legend. But for many years, Caribou has been one of the only Canadians to bridge the gap with diehard bourbon lovers. It doesn’t offer a replacement for Kentucky-style whisky, but rather a counterpoint to the powerful oak-forward character of its southern brethren. Expect this single barrel to deliver a beautifully refined and expressive profile, featuring appealing aromas of toasted vanilla, nougat, and rich caramel. There will inevitably be extreme interest in this rare and unique selection, but if you’re lucky enough to snag one, there’s no question it will be among the best Canada has to offer. This unique single barrel was hand selected by the team at K&L Wine Merchants representing one of the oldest offerings we’ve ever seen from the distillery and a very special one indeed: the Christmas Eve barrel. It was distilled on December 24th 2017, making it nearly 8 years old.

The Glenlivet Cask Master’s Collection, A New Era Of Speyside Smoothness – Scotch Whisky News

The Glenlivet Cask Master’s Collection, A New Era Of Speyside Smoothness

The Glenlivet, the definitive Speyside single malt, is proud to launch The Glenlivet Cask Master’s Collection, a new aged range of 14, 16, and 19 Year Old expressions. This collection celebrates the mastery and vision of Cask Master Kevin Balmforth, showcasing The Glenlivet’s iconic smooth style. This new collection of aged single malts are exclusively available in Global Travel Retail (GTR), offering shoppers with passion for adventure the opportunity to discover something new.

Drawing on over 200 years of whisky making expertise passed down through generations of cask masters, Kevin Balmforth has meticulously selected the finest casks to create a trio of beautifully rounded, well-balanced whiskies with an abundance of fruity notes that capture the very essence of Speyside, the heart of Single Malt Scotch whisky.

The Glenlivet Cask Master’s Collection features three distinct expressions:

  • The Glenlivet 14 Year Old: Matured in American and European Oak, this expression offers a harmonious balance of flavour, with notes of baked apple and citrus zest, delivering a smooth and complex experience. The crystal waters of the Livet are reflected in the pack’s crystalline blue colour gradient.
  • The Glenlivet 16 Year Old: Aged exclusively in 100% American Oak casks, The Glenlivet 16 Year Old is a perfect pairing of whisky and cask, resulting in a sweet and creamy profile with notes of creamy toffee and ripe plum. The Speyside sunset inspires the pack’s bold red gradient.
  • The Glenlivet 19 Year Old: The pinnacle of the three and marking a first for the brand, The Glenlivet 19 Year Old features a selective finish in Scottish Oak, paying tribute to The Glenlivet’s terroir. Alongside maturation in American and European Oak, the Scottish Oak finish brings notes of stewed apples and blackcurrant spice, for a rich yet smooth drinking experience. Scottish Oak trees grow slowly due to the local climate, reaching maturation between 120 and 150 years. This not only makes Scottish Oak very rare, but it also means the grain is tight and porous, contributing to the rich spice flavours in the whisky. The pack design is inspired by the changing hues of the forests of Scotland, where the Scottish Oak resides.

Kevin Balmforth, The Glenlivet Cask Master commented: “With these three distinctive expressions, we have concentrated on what makes our Single Malt Scotch Whiskies stand out: the mastery of the makers, the character of our stills, and above all, the smoothness of our liquid. By honouring our heritage while continuing to push the boundaries of flavour with carefully selected casks, we’ve curated a collection that is a quality expression of Speyside whiskies.”

The Glenlivet Cask Master’s Collection also marks the reveal of an elevated and distinctive evolved contemporary design for The Glenlivet. The refreshed packaging includes a new brand monogram together with on-pack wave graphics, reflecting the meaning of The Glenlivet (‘The Valley of the Smooth Flowing one’). The new look honours The Glenlivet’s rich legacy, drawing inspiration from the flowing waters of the River Livet, the source of its exceptional character.

The Glenlivet Cask Master’s Collection is now available exclusively in Global Travel Retail locations worldwide.
