The Scotch Malt Whisky Society “NEW Distillery: Cask No. 163.1” – Scotch Whisky News

Descriptors for the aroma came fast and furious – gravadlax sauce, beech-smoked trout, black peppercorn-infused rye whisky and homemade sweet ploughman’s pickle. The taste was like smoked brisket pastrami prepared in a brine of pink curing salt, sugar and spices, alongside mild goat’s cheese on Jamaican gingerbread – intrigued? You should be! And what a change after the addition of water. Initially we stayed in the Caribbean with a warm Jamaican-style coffee and walnut cake followed by the sweet scent of cherry wood- smoked marshmallows. On the palate, we now found a mixture between a smoked battenberg cake and tiramisu with smoked cocoa powder.

Moments like this are why being a member of the SMWS is so special. In just a few hours (now long past- WI) we’ll release our first offering from a Hebridean distillery located on the Isle of Harris.  This is also the first release by the distillery from an independent bottler. This whisky will also be available to enjoy by the dram at our Members’ Rooms.

Douglas Laing introduces Fourth Bottling within its Exclusive Old Particular Red Wine Cask Collection

Douglas Laing & Co. today announces the release of a Girvan 16-Year-Old Single Grain Scotch Whisky. This special edition, finished in a single Merlot Red Wine Cask, is the fourth bottling in their exclusive Old Particular Red Wine Cask collection.

Bowmore 22 Years Old

1996 Cask 901271

Recently, we had the enormous pleasure of meeting with Morrison Distillers at their new Aberargie Distillery; during that visit, we came across a parcel of Bowmore single malt, which was distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2019 after maturing for 22 years in a single hogshead.   After trying this incredible malt with light smoke and tropical fruit notes, we jumped at the chance to buy the remaining stock and relabel it for our store.

Available exclusively through our stockists

Each batch is small, bespoke and distinctly different from the last. Bottled and hand labelled in our own warehouse where you’ll be glad to know, no artificial colouring or chill-filtration takes place.

The latest edition to our blended Scotch brand family is a ‘classic blend’. By this we mean a mix of malt and grain whiskies blended in the tradition style. In this case we have a selection of whiskies that have been blended when they were young and married back into a refill butt for a very long time, presumably intended to be bottled one day as an old and premium blended scotch from one of the famous blending houses. Thankfully we have managed to rescue a cask of this blend and present it in very limited form.

The taste offered – Blood orange, custard creams, furniture polish, black pepper, hazelnut and dried coconut.
