EWAN MCGREGOR RAISES £135K FOR SCOTTISH CHARITY THROUGH WHISKY AUCTION – Island Whisky News

EWAN MCGREGOR RAISES £135K FOR SCOTTISH CHARITY THROUGH

WHISKY AUCTION

CEO of CHAS, Rami Okasha and Ewan McGregor

Renowned Scottish actor Ewan McGregor has raised £135,000 for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) after auctioning 150 exclusive bottles from his own personal 1998 cask of Arran Single Malt Whisky from Lochranza Distillery.

Auctioned through the world’s leading online whisky auction platform, Whisky Auctioneer, 543 bidders from 28 countries placed over 7,000 bids on “Ewan’s Cut”. The auction also saw a 160% increase in monthly registrations. The hammer price reached £119,893, further boosted by £15,107, as Whisky Auctioneer waived its seller’s commission and donated its 12.5% buyer’s commission, ensuring that the maximum possible funds reach CHAS.

Bottle #1 of “Ewan’s Cut” achieved a hammer price of £4,350, setting a new record  for the highest price ever paid for a bottle of Arran single malt at auction. This rare 26 year old Arran Single Malt, matured in an ex-Sherry Hogshead cask, is one of the oldest whiskies ever produced by the Lochranza Distillery. The cask was gifted to McGregor by the distillery in 1998, with the team also generously donating their time and expertise to bottle and prepare the whisky for auction.

The Leith Agency worked in partnership with Ewan and his brother Colin McGregor to bring “Ewan’s Cut” to life on a pro-bono basis. The bottle design and name were inspired by Ewan’s illustrious career, featuring references to his iconic roles in films like Trainspotting and Star Wars, as well as his memorable Long Way Round adventure. Each of the 150 bottle labels reads like a mini film script, with no two labels alike.

Ewan McGregor said:

What a total! I just want to thank each and every one of our partners for putting the time, effort and work into this endeavour.

CHAS has always been very close to my heart, and I am so proud that we were all able to raise such a sum for them. I know it’s the children they help and their families who will benefit a lot from this – so thank you very much to everyone involved and to those that placed generous bids in the auction.”

Rami Okasha, CEO at CHAS said:

“We are very grateful to Ewan McGregor, a long-standing supporter and friend of CHAS, for kindly choosing to donate all the proceeds from this special auction to CHAS so we can continue to support children with life-shortening conditions and their families, bringing us closer to our founding mission of reaching every child and family that needs our help.

“A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in this exciting auction that enabled so much to be raised for CHAS. I would also like to express our sincere thanks to Isle of Arran Distillers, to Whisky Auctioneer and to the Leith Agency.

“Three children die each week in Scotland from an incurable condition. We can only be there for families with the support of kind donations like this. CHAS provides unwavering care to children who may die young and their families, at every step on this hardest of journeys. Proceeds received from this auction make a huge difference to children and families helping us to reach every family across Scotland who needs our help and to keep the joy alive even in the face of death.”

Euan Mitchell, Managing Director at Isle of Arran Distillers added:

“We are absolutely delighted that the auction of ‘Ewan’s Cut’ has successfully raised an incredible £135,000 for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS). This project has been a journey close to our hearts since Ewan McGregor first joined us at Lochranza Distillery back in 1998. To see his private cask of Arran Single Malt contribute to such a worthy cause is truly special.

It has been a privilege to collaborate with Ewan, Whisky Auctioneer, and the Leith Agency to bring this unique whisky to life, and we are deeply grateful for the support and generosity from everyone involved. The funds raised will make a significant difference in supporting the vital work of CHAS, helping families during their most challenging times.”

Joe Wilson, Head Curator and Spirits Specialist at Whisky Auctioneer said:

“This is an outstanding result for everyone involved but most importantly, the amount of funds raised for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) will have a lasting positive impact on so many children and families in Scotland.

“It’s always a privilege to work together on partnerships like this where we can not only offer a chance for people to bid on very special bottles of whisky, but also really help to make a difference to people’s lives.”

Richard Marsham, CEO of Leith Agency said:

“Leith are delighted to have been part of the Ewan’s Cut project in conjunction with Ewan McGregor and CHAS. It’s fantastic to see this level of money raised for such a great cause and that our bespoke label designs really helped push the auction prizes up with each bottle being a unique collector’s item.  And a big shout out to our friends at Isle of Arran Distillers and Whisky Auctioneer for making the whole project possible.”

About Isle of Arran Distillers

Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd is an independently owned producer of Single Malt Whisky on the Isle of Arran, with two distilleries situated at either end of the island.

Arran Single Malt is produced at Lochranza Distillery which was established at the north-west tip of the Isle of Arran in the village of Lochranza in 1995.  The site was carefully chosen for the quality of its water source, Loch na Davie, which is filtered through six waterfalls before it reaches the distillery in the foothills of the village.  Lochranza will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025.

Their second distillery opened at Lagg, at the south end of the island, in 2019 and produces the heavily peated Lagg Single Malt.

As one of the very first of a new wave of distilleries opening in the early 1990s, Lochranza Distillery has remained independent since day one, under the care of a dedicated small team of passionate whisky people.  Arran Single Malt is a mark of quality that whisky lovers respect and trust. The pioneering spirit of this independent team has ensured that this small Scottish island and its whisky is an important and globally respected part of the whisky industry.

Click Whisky Auctions October 2024 Auction in Full Swing! – Auction Whisky News

Our October 2024 Auction is in full swing and it’s a great time to take a closer look at a few of the interesting bottles on offer, including this Bruichladdich 14 Years Old which has an amazing tale behind its conception. In 2005 local fisherman John Baker was fishing 3 miles out when he spotted something that may be a danger to other vessels and called the coastguards, who in turn brought the mystery object to dry land. They quickly discovered it was in fact a mine detecting robot which belonged to the MOD. They contacted the Naval base at Faslane who repeatedly denied losing the vessel! John’s brother-in-law, who was a member of the coastguards, took home the robot and put it in the garden of his house at Port Ellen. However, only two weeks later the MOD confirmed that the vessel was in fact theirs and arranged to retrieve it. Bruichladdich wasted no time in producing this bottling which celebrated the story of the seafaring vessel, which was well received by the locals. Years later, the vessel had become surplus to requirements and was auctioned off, the distillery was alerted to its sale and promptly bought it to proudly place at the courtyard of their distillery in 2016, just in time for their annual open day!

Another fascinating bottle is Macallan Genesis. Released in 2018 to mark the opening of Macallan’s iconic new distillery. Genesis also celebrates the design processes used to build this state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly building. A highly prized and important bottling in the history of the Macallan Distillery, limited to just 2,500 bottles.

Another top pick from this month’s auction must surely be this bottle of GlenDronach, Distilled in 1968 and then aged for 25 years in ex-Sherry Casks. This particular version was bottled for the US market which was imported by Hiram Walker. One of only 2,000 bottles produced!

Another 25 Year Old bottling of note is this offering from Scapa; the oldest official bottling from the Orkney distillery. Bottle 284 of 2000 produced!

These are only a few of the bottles in our October auction, there are many more to enjoy from your favourite distilleries. To view more wee gems visit clickwhiskyauctions.com. Register to bid. Remember, you’ve got to be in it to win it! Auction ends Sunday 20th October from 8pm BST.

OCTOBER AUCTION NOW LIVE!

Almost time to turn the clocks back, so a fitting time to take a look at a few vintage bottlings in our LIVE October auction, like this 1980 Ardbeg Kildalton. With only 1300 bottles produced, this is a rare beast indeed!

Or how about this bottling, distilled in 1977 by the now closed Lowland distillery Inverleven. Aged for 26 years then drawn from a single Cask #3095 and bottled by Duncan Taylor for their Rare Auld range at Cask strength. Bottle 165 of only 168 produced!

Another rare find is this bottling, distilled at the Glencraig Distillery in 1975 then bottled in 1999 by Elgin based independent bottlers Gordon & MacPhail. Expressions like these are a great example of bottlings under the ‘Connoisseurs Choice’ label of distilleries which are unfortunately now closed.

Released in the late 2000’s the Macallan Ghillies Dram celebrates the River Spey, which provides superb Salmon fishing to anglers and is part of the boundary to the Easter Elchies Estate, home of the Macallan Distillery. Named ‘Ghillies Dram’ in recognition of Willie Bremner, ghillie to the beat or stretch of river owned by the Macallan which attracts keen anglers from all over the world, not only to this famous stretch of river but to the distillery too, where they can sample different whiskies from the distillery itself. Funds from the sale of this expression were made available to the restocking of young fish to the river. This lot is accompanied by a watercolour picture of the beat owned by the estate, depicting images of pools known for good Salmon fishing. Bottle number 776 of only 800 bottles produced!

These are only a few of the bottles featured in our October auction, to view more wee gems visit clickwhiskyauctions.com. Register to bid. Remember, you’ve got to be in it to win it! Auction ends Sunday 20th October from 8pm BST.

Scotch Whisky Auctions ‘Our 160th auction is now live!’ – Auction Whisky News

Our 160th auction is now live, and we have a tremendous collection of whiskies on offer from every region, not to mention wines, tequilas, bourbons or anything else that takes your fancy.  With over 7000 bottles in this month, we’re sure you’ll find something to ease the burden as the nights draw in, so without further ado here are a few of the amazing drams on offer this month.

Karuizawa 30 Year Old Samurai Cask #7843

One of ten amazing casks which were bottled in 2014 and 2015, each with a different Samurai depicted on the label, this is the Karuizawa 30 Year Old Samurai Cask #7843.  Aged for a whopping three decades in a single Sherry Butt this formidable dram has somehow retained an ABV of 58.3%.  A rare dram indeed from Japan’s most coveted silent distillery this is one of only 458 bottles released.

St. Magdalene 25 Year Old Cadenhead’s 75cl Circa 1980’s

From a silent Japanese distillery to a silent Scottish one, this is the St. Magdalene 25 Year Old Cadenhead’s 75cl Circa 1980’s.  Named for the leper colony which once stood on the site St. Magdalene distillery produced whisky in a lowland style until its untimely demise in the ‘Great Cull’ of 1983.  This tremendous whisky was probably distilled at some point in the late 50’s or early 60’s and was bottled in the 1980’s by famed Scottish indie bottler Cadenhead’s.

Springbank 1965 26 Year Old

Next up we have another Scotch whisky distilled in the 1960’s though this time from Campbeltown, this beauty is the Springbank 1965 26 Year Old.  By most people’s reckoning Springbank is one of the finest distilleries in Scotland whose distinct medium peated, two and a half times distilled spirit produces a robust and complex dram admired the world over.  This a well-aged 1965 vintage and is sure to be a must-have for any serious Springbank collectors out there.

Bowmore Black 1964 42 Year Old 75cl

From the idyllic Mull of Kintyre to the ragged charm of Islay, this special dram is the Bowmore Black 1964 42 Year Old 75cl.  First of the fabled Trilogy of the 1964 Bowmore’s. The oldest release of the Black Bowmore was distilled on the 5th November 1964 and matured within five Oloroso sherry casks. Only 827 bottles were released 42 years later.  This dram is the absolute definition of a sherry bomb, hence the black of the title, and is surely one of the most sought-after drams Bowmore has ever produced.

Heritage Distilling Co. American Single Casks

Finally, we have another couple of UK exclusives from American Single Casks, both from Heritage Distilling Co. an American craft distillery based in Gig Harbor, Washington.  Both bottles are number 1 in their respective runs, and both are only available in the UK and Europe right here at Scotch Whisky Auctions.  The 2015 6 Year Old is 100% Rye and was recently reviewed by Serge Valentin at whiskyfun.com where it received a mightily impressive 91 points!  The 2018 5 Year Old was produced using heavily roasted chocolate malted barley, most often used in brewing dark beers and looks particularly delicious.

As well as these two new releases we are also selling 50 bottles each from the first two casks from last month as a buy-it-now here and here, so if you missed out last month here is your chance to snap one up before they are all gone.

As always, we have a wide range of high-quality drams available at all price points, so now is the time to delve into this month’s offerings and start building that watchlist.  Best of luck to everyone in the auction, and as always………..don’t lose your bottle.
