Scotch Whisky Auctions “161st Mid-Auction Highlights” – Auction Whisky News

The 161st auction is well underway, but there is still time to get involved.  From our experience the auction usually ends sometime after 10pm on Sunday night, which gives you plenty of time to get bids in.

We would also like to point out that for our customers in the United States, Asia and further afield this auction is the last one where we can get your bottles to you before the Christmas break, so if you are looking for that special Christmas tipple this may be your last chance.  See our update here for further details.

Linkwood 1956 60 Year Old Cask #20 Private Collection Gordon & MacPhail

First up is a supremely well-aged beauty from Speyside, this is the Linkwood 1956 60 Year Old Cask #20 Private Collection Gordon & MacPhail.  On 3rd January 1956, George Urquhart oversaw the filling of a specially selected European Oak first fill Sherry hogshead with new-make Linkwood spirit and left it to mature until 1968 when it was moved to warehouses in Elgin.  Now two generations on, this delicious looking dram has been bottled into fifty-six decanters.   An extremely rare 1956 single malt with a unique backstory, and presented in a very special display case.

Macallan 1950 Exceptional Cask #13 2018 Release

Staying in Speyside this is the Macallan 1950 Exceptional Cask #13 2018 Release.  Macallan’s Exceptional Cask series first appeared on the scene in 2017 and is exclusively comprised of single cask releases, using only what the distillery considers to be their finest stock.  With a wide variety of vintages the Exceptional Cask series feels like a spiritual successor to the legendary Fine & Rare collection.  This particular bottling was distilled over seven decades ago and is one of only 336 bottles released, a very special expression.

Michter’s 20 Year Old Limited Release 75cl

Now onto one of the finest bourbons on the market, this is the Michter’s 20 Year Old Limited Release 75cl.  Known as “the whiskey that warmed the American Revolution” due to George Washington reputedly visiting the distillery and purchasing supplies of it’s famous booze to fortify his troops, Michter’s has been around for a long time in one form or another.  This is one of their flagship releases, an excellent 20 Year Old which we are sure would help fortify you throughout this fast approaching winter.

Longmorn 1968 50 Year Old Gordon & MacPhail Decanter

We started with a fabulously old Gordon & MacPhail Speyside so why not finish with one, this is the Longmorn 1968 50 Year Old Gordon & MacPhail Decanter.  Distilled in the swinging sixties and bottled a whole five decades later in 2018 this marvelous Longmorn single malt has been aged in a 1st fill sherry butt imbuing the liquid with a rich mahogany colour.  One of only 94 bottles released and contained within a special crystal decanter this is a rather distinguished bottle of whisky. As always, we have a wide range of drams with something to suit everyone, so now is the time to get moving picking out your own personal favourites for your watchlist.  Best of luck to everyone in the auction, and as always………..don’t lose your bottle.Thinking of selling your bottles?

We still offer 0% commission to all sellers making Scotch Whisky Auctions the best place to sell bottles.

Scotch Whisky Auctions “Our 161st auction is now live! – Auction Whisky News

A warm autumnal welcome everyone to our now live 161st auction!  We have scoured the United Kingdom and beyond to put together a strong auction this month, with seven thousand bottles to choose from as well as some more ‘Buy it Now’ options from our friends at American Single Cask.  So, without further ado let’s delve into some of the highlights this month.

To begin with we have an excellent opportunity to buy an entire cask, a BenRiach 2014 Hogshead #25 currently being held at Whisky Broker.  Since it’s reinvigoration by Billy Walker Benriach has been going from strength to strength and produced some truly exceptional whisky.  If you have been looking for a chance to own your own cask of delicious whisky, then this could be the one for you.  Recently re-gauged at 62.6% and 211 litres this cask is currently held at Whisky Broker and the winning bidder will need to set up an account at Whisky Broker if they don’t already have one.

Next up is a jaw-droppingly old expression from one of the most collectable distilleries out there, this is the Macallan 1928 50 Year Old 75cl.  It’s hard to fathom just how old this liquid is, it was distilled the best part of a century ago and to put it into context John Logie Baird was transmitting the first transatlantic television signal while this delicious looking dram was coming off the still.  Finally bottled in 1983 this is a certified time capsule which offers the buyer a bona fide taste of a bygone era.

Our first highlight was a hard act to follow, but this Talisker 45 Year Old Glacial Edge will give it a go.  A truly unusual expression this one with an incredible back story.  Twelve heavily charred American oak casks were taken onto a voyage into Arctic ice fields in Canada. With the ends of the casks removed, they were left exposed to sub-zero temperatures for 96 hours! This allowed the extreme cold to fracture the wood which in turn increased the surface area of the casks that the whisky was able to interact with during the finishing period in Scotland.  At forty-five years old this unique dram is well-aged and well-travelled.

Now we have a terrific dram indeed from arguably Ireland’s finest distillery, this is the Redbreast 38 Year Old Dream Cask #38404 Zenith Edition.  Just when you were thinking “Glacial Edge” was a cool name for a whisky along comes the “Zenith Edition”.  The Dream Cask Series has produced some absolute belters but as the title suggest this one is at the top of the tree.  Aged for almost four decades in a single Oloroso Sherry cask and one of only 822 bottles produced this is one of the finest examples of Irish single pot still distilling there is.

Last but not least we have a something special from one of Scotland’s heavyweight distilleries, this special bottling is the Glen Grant 1956 Gordon & MacPhail Decanter.  Distilled way back when in 1956 and only bottled in 2015 by famed indie bottler Gordon & MacPhail, this lusciously dark dram is one of only 218 decanters made.  The decanter itself is a thing of understated beauty and is festooned with Insular Celtic images from the iconic manuscript, The Book of Kells.

The Distillers One of One ® Auction Returns in 2025: A Whisky Industry Collaboration of Creativity, Craft and Charity – Auciton Whisky News

The Distillers One of One ® Auction Returns in 2025:

A Whisky Industry Collaboration of Creativity, Craft and Charity

One of the most exciting events in the global Scotch Whisky calendar, the Distillers One of One ®  Charity Auction, in partnership with Sotheby’s, will be returning to Hopetoun House in Scotland for its third instalment in one year’s time, on 10th October 2025.

This special event, which sees collectors of fine and rare whisky from around the world gather for the opportunity to own a truly unique piece of liquid history, has so far broken 37 auction records globally: 19 in 2023 and 18 in 2021.

Unlike other auctions in the rare spirits categories, 100% of the hammer price from the auction goes directly to charity, principally to the Youth Action Fund, with £4.3million raised so far to help transform the lives of disadvantaged young people in Scotland.

With over 35 confirmed donors so far, including some exciting new entrants (full list below), collectors from around the world are already anticipating the reveal of the 2025 lots. The lots themselves are created from across the breadth of the Scotch Whisky industry, with 43 donors having taken part to date. Each lot is a coveted, one-of-a-kind creation that has never been available previously, and is often created in partnership with an artist or master craftsman to ensure a truly spectacular final product, offering a unique opportunity for not only collectors of ultra rare whisky, but collectors of art and luxury goods as well.

“For Suntory Global Spirits, the Distillers One of One ® is not just a highlight of our calendar, it’s an opportunity to unite in a shared purpose,” says Cain Hayward-Hughes – Senior Global Creative Manager Prestige Malts at Suntory Global Spirits. “There is something truly special about coming together with our peers to craft these unique expressions. It is a singular opportunity to showcase the rarest and most valuable of whiskies, and to celebrate our industry — all while improving the lives of those who most need support and encouragement.”

Bidders from 21 countries globally have participated so far, with the vast majority of lots being won on the day by buyers who were present at Hopetoun House, to experience the groundbreaking auction in person.

With over 2,000 young people having been engaged through the programme so far, and over 1,380 whose life chances have been transformed, The Distillers One of One ®  demonstrates the power of what can be achieved when the industry and its associates collaborate.

“We’re thrilled that over thirty-five companies have already confirmed their participation in the 2025 Auction, reflecting both the success of our past Distillers One of One auctions and the dedication these brands have to supporting our charitable cause,” says Beanie Geraedts-Espey, MD of Distillers One of One. “We’ve had a glimpse of some of the lots in progress, and we’re incredibly excited – and deeply grateful – for the remarkable thought, craftsmanship, and time poured into these extraordinary creations.”

Key returning sponsors for the 2025 auction include Glencairn Crystal, Mclaren Packaging and Simpsons Malt.

SOTHEBY’S AND LEADING SCOTCH MAKER CHIVAS BROTHERS ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP TO AUCTION COLLECTABLE, RARE, HIGHLY AGED WHISKIES – Scotch Whisky News

SOTHEBY’S AND LEADING SCOTCH MAKER CHIVAS BROTHERS ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP TO AUCTION COLLECTABLE, RARE, HIGHLY AGED WHISKIES

The inaugural lot is a 55 year old single malt whisky from The Glenlivet distillery, presented in a one-of-a-kind gold plated sculpture by computational architect, Michael Hansmeyer

LONDON, 9th OCTOBER 2024 – Sotheby’s today announced a long-term partnership with Chivas Brothers, the Pernod Ricard business dedicated to Scotch whisky and makers of The Glenlivet and Aberlour, to bring highly aged, one-off creations to auction, exclusively for Sotheby’s collectors. Each individual lot will feature a never-before-released Scotch whisky from the Chivas Brothers portfolio.

The inaugural lot is The Glenlivet 55 Year Old, 200th Year Anniversary Edition, One of One, a bespoke, never to be repeated bottle that honours two centuries of unparalleled whisky making heritage. The ultra-rare single malt has been aged for 55 years – the highest age statement ever released by The Glenlivet distillery – and is presented in a custom spherical decanter embellished with precious peridot gemstones using an intricate technique inspired by the creation of fine jewellery. The bottle is paired with a stunning, one-of-a-kind sculpture created by computational architect Michael Hansmeyer, a pioneer in the exploring of algorithms to generate and fabricate new and unique architectural forms, and crafted using emerald quartzite and 24 carat gold.

This special lot will be available for auction from 22nd October 2024 to 5th November 2024 in Sotheby’s London sale of Finest & Rarest Whisky with all proceeds benefitting the National Trust for Scotland, which is dedicated to preserving Scotland’s natural and cultural heritage. Since 2020, The Glenlivet has supported the Trust through Pioneering Spirit, an ambitious archaeology and research project that uncovers the stories and sites of illicit whisky production across Scotland, deepening understanding of the origins of Scotch whisky and its effect on the country’s rich cultural heritage.

This exclusive lot comes on the heels of The Glenlivet’s 200th anniversary celebrations in 2024, commemorating the distillery’s heritage and craftsmanship over its two-century long legacy.

Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s Global Head of Spirits, commented: “We are thrilled to offer the first one-off special release of this partnership in The Glenlivet distillery’s oldest single malt, aged 55 years, to avid whisky collectors worldwide. Partnering with Scotch whisky producer Chivas Brothers to offer some of the world’s most exclusive whiskies, crafted exclusively for Sotheby’s, is an exceptional privilege. The debut of The Glenlivet 55 Year Old, 200th Year Anniversary Edition, One of One perfectly embodies the merging of fine spirits and design, and we look forward to bringing more extraordinary creations to collectors and connoisseurs worldwide.”

Jacques-Henri Brive, Global Head of Luxury Development at Chivas Brothers, added: “We’re fortunate to have an exquisite archive of rare, highly aged whiskies at Chivas Brothers but until now, these prized whiskies have never been available to purchase. Our partnership with Sotheby’s represents the first opportunity for collectors to add never-before-released pieces of Scotch whisky history to their collection. It’s a monumental moment for whisky connoisseurs and luxury appreciators – one not to be missed.”

The Glenlivet 55 Year Old, 200th Year Anniversary Edition, One of One, carries an estimate of £35,000-£70,000. Bottled at 42.8%, this is a superb expression evoking red apples, ripe white peach and dark chocolate fondant on the nose, with a subtle taste of lavish caramel, desiccated coconut, dark liquorice with ginger and cinnamon spice on the taste and an incredibly rich and sweet finish with enduring, warming spice, impacted by the American oak influence.
