Just Whisky Auction Live – Amazing Selection of Whisky

Just Whisky is delighted to go live with their 58th auction, we have a vast array of bottles for your collection, for a wee dram and for the investor.  Whatever you are looking for we have you covered.  The Auction ends Sunday 16th September from 8.00pm (BST)

JW1

Macallan Genesis

This bottle caused some issues near the distillery on the day of sale, closing roads and causing traffic problems.  I think you will agree it is very stylish in appearance and celebrates the opening of the new distillery.  This special limited edition bottling was released in August 2018 to commemorate the opening of the newly built Macallan distillery, which opened it’s doors just a few months prior. This commemorative bottle contains complex and masterful whisky that reflects each painstaking step in the whisky process taken to make The Macallan. It celebrates the creation of an iconic distillery in a unique collaboration with renowned architects Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners. Presented in a beautiful box along with a lithographic print of the distillery, each one signed by Graham Stark, the lead architect.

JW2

Bowmore 18 Years Old – Sherriff’s 75 proof

Bowmore distillery has a long history, and this bottle is one of the rarest we’ve seen at auction. The distillery was bought from the Mutter family in 1925 by J.B. Sheriff & Co. and remained under their ownership until being purchased by Inverness-based William Grigor & Son, Ltd. in 1950. This whisky is from spirit distilled during this period and is bottled at 75° proof.

JW3

Dalmore 35 Years Old

An impressive show-stopping piece from Dalmore, aged for 35 long years in three types of casks: A bourbon barrel, a colheita-port pipe and a Matusalem sherry and presented in a Baccarat Crystal decanter.  One of only 1000 bottles released.

 JW4

Laphroaig 12 Years Old – Cadenhead’s 80 proof 1960’s

An incredibly well-preserved bottle of Laphroaig, bottled – we believe – in the late 1960’s by Aberdeen-based Wm. Cadenhead.  Red stopper with white plastic seal. 80° Proof.

JW5

Bowmore 50yo

An incredible release from Bowmore distillery, Islay. Distilled on a very cold day in December 1961 and laid down in two ex-bourbon hogshead casks, the Bowmore 50-Year-Old has spent half a century maturing in the legendary No. 1 Vaults. In 2011, just 200 bottles of this truly exceptional single malt were bottled. Bowmore 50 Year Old is a celebration of not just one Mastercraft, but many, starting with the time-honoured skills of Bowmore’s small distillery team that cold winter’s day on Islay.

Enough talk! Let’s view the auction!

Auction records broken by incredibly rare ‘lost distillery’ whisky bottled for the Queen’s visit to Islay – Scotch Whisky News

PEQUEEN

Auction records broken by incredibly rare ‘lost distillery’ whisky bottled for the Queen’s visit to Islay

This £50,000 Port Ellen 12 year old Queen’s Visit 1980 is the only known official bottling released while the distillery was still active

PERTH, SCOTLAND – One of the most iconic, well-regarded and rare whiskies ever produced – the Port Ellen 12 Year old Queen’s Visit 1980 – has been purchased for a record-breaking £50,000 hammer price in an online auction held by Perth-based Whisky Auctioneer (www.whiskyauctioneer.com).

Thought to be the only official bottling of Port Ellen released while the distillery was active, it was produced to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to the island on 9th August 1980.

The exact number of bottles is unknown, but it is thought that enough were bottled so that the Queen and all senior staff present on the day could have one. Unofficial estimates are that around 40 were made.

In terms of taste, it has the reputation of being a truly outstanding dram. Indeed, this is the only whisky to score a near-perfect 99/100 on Whiskyfun – the highest rating Serge Valentin has ever awarded.

The bottle attracted a lot of global interest, particularly from Europe and Asia, with over 50 bids being lodged and the eventual winner from Hong Kong.

According to Rare Whisky 101, the most recent previous auction price received for the Port Ellen Queen’s Visit was £11,200 in January 2017, with a previous high auction sale in 2016 for £12,100.

Sean McGlone, director at Whisky Auctioneer, said: “Port Ellen has been a ‘lost distillery’ since 1983 and its near mythical status has grown each year since then – an opportunity to acquire a bottle from this distillery is rare, but this Port Ellen Queen’s Visit is the only known official bottling while the distillery was active.  Only a select handful of people received this bottle in honour of the Queen visiting in 1980 so from a collectability point of view, this is essentially unsurpassed.  But to also have such a highly regarded spirit in terms of taste means this is truly an iconic whisky for collectors and connoisseurs alike.”

Another record-breaker in the August Auction was a 50 year old The Macallan – one of only 200 – which went for £56,000 hammer price, up from the last sale at auction in April 2018 for £32,525 and from the retail price of £25,000 upon its release earlier in 2018.

These lots are amongst a growing line of rare treasures to be sold by Perthshire firm Whisky Auctioneer which specialises in auctioning fine, old, rare and collectable whisky. Over the past two years, Whisky Auctioneer has broken auction records on a monthly basis, and in addition to the recent Laphroaig 1967 15 year old Samaroli sold for £61,000, a Bowmore 1966 Samaroli Bouquet sold for £51,611, standout lots include a rare collection of Corti Brothers whiskies for £52,865, and the world’s largest known collection of rare and collectable Karuizawa whisky from Japan for £770,000.

The auction ran from 24 August and closed on 3 September.

Global First, Whisky Cask Sale at Mulberry Bank Auctions

Mulberry Bank Auctions are pleased to announce what is the world’s first Whisky Cask Auction, to be held on Wednesday 19th September at 2pm.  This unique auction, the first dedicated solely to casks of Scotch Whisky, brings together some of Scotland’s finest produce and offers it to a global market of investors, collectors and enthusiasts.

With a line up ranging from a 2008 Tomatin, to perhaps the star of the show, a 29 year old hogshead of Macallan the casks on sale offer a range of opportunities for prospective buyers.  Acquiring a cask has traditionally only involved the purchase of New Make Spirit which then requires years and/or decades to mature, with this sale Mulberry Bank Auctions are opening the way for buyers to get hold of a mature cask and avoiding the long wait for the whisky to mature.

Estimates range from £8,000-90,000

A tasting event, limited to 40 spaces, will be held in Glasgow’s Trades Hall on Wednesday 12th September at 7pm where interested parties will be able to try out the whiskies for themselves.

As Whisky sales continue to rise globally and the spirit gains new enthusiasts from unusual markets Mulberry Bank’s Inaugural Cask sale is sure to create excitement around the globe.

Location: Mulberry Bank Auctions, 15 Kelvin Avenue, Hillington Park, Glasgow G52 4LT

NEW AUCTION WORLD RECORD FOR SINGLE BOTTLE OF JAPANESE WHISKY AT BONHAMS HONG KONG – Japanese Whisky News

Yamazaki 50

NEW AUCTION WORLD RECORD FOR SINGLE BOTTLE OF JAPANESE WHISKY AT BONHAMS  HONG KONG

RARE YAMAZAKI-50 YEAR OLD SELLS FOR HK$2,695,000

First edition of Yamazaki-50 year old. Sold for: HK$2,695,000 (estimate HK$1,800,000-2,400,000.

A rare first edition of Yamazaki-50 year old became the most valuable Japanese whisky at auction when it sold for a new world record of HK$2,695,000 at Bonhams Whisky Sale in Hong Kong on Friday 17 August. It had been estimated at HK$1,800,000-2,400,000.  It overtakes the previous world record of HK$2,450,000 set at Bonhams Wine and Whisky sale in Hong Kong in May 2018. In total, the sale made more thanHK$26,000,000.

The oldest expression from the famous Japanese distillery, the Yamakazi-50 year old was matured in casks made from mizunara (Japanese Oak) before being bottled and released in 2005. Only 50 bottles were produced, making it one of the scarcest Japanese whiskies.

Earlier this year, Bonhams established a world record for the most valuable Scotch whisky – and the most valuable whisky ever sold at auction – of HK$8,636,250 for the Macallan Valerio Adami-1926-60 Year Old.

Bonhams Head of Fine Wine and Whisky in Hong Kong, Daniel Lam, said: “The Yamazaki-50 year old is an exceptional whisky and, of course, very rare indeed. This new world record for a bottle of Japanese whisky – just a few months after we set the previous one –  and the world record we set for Scotch whisky in May demonstrate that the auction market for single malt whisky is in good health.”

Other highlights of the sale included:

  • A bottle of the Yamazaki-35 year old, sold for HK$551,250 (estimate: HK$350,000-500,000);
  • A bottle of Karuizawa-1965, sold for HK$490,000 (estimate: HK$330,000-380,000)
  • A bottle of the Suntory-Rolling Stone 50th Anniversary from the Yamazaki distillery, sold for HK$465,500 (estimate: HK$280,000-360,000).
  • A bottle of The Macallan Fine & Rare-1937-37 year old, sold for HK$428,750 (HK$260,000-320,000)
  • A vertical collection of Port Ellen Annual Release – 17 bottles from 2001-2017 – sold for HK$367,500.  (Estimate: HK$280,000-360,000)

  • The Karuizawa Sumo Trio Distilled in 1981, 1982 and 1983, framed within a crafted humidor designed by Ukiyo-e artist Hachisuka Kuniaki. Only 340 sets were produced. Sold for HK$183,750 (estimate: HK$90,000-120,000)
