Whisky Wednesday Reviews Ardnamurchan Distillery – Whisky News

https://youtu.be/lLCHVshU9n4

Finally got hold of one! The second public single malt release from the Ardnamurchan Distillery; a fine release at that.

A mixture of 50% unpeated and 50% peated barely, in a combination of ex-bourbon and Oloroso casks, this second release is a HUGE whisky in regards to its depth of flavour and its natural presentation. Seriously, for young whisky (sub seven years) – this is an incredible expression of the west coast of Scotland.

Glasgow Whisky announces distillery purchase to expand global business – Scotch Whisky News

Glasgow Whisky announces distillery purchase to expand global business

Glasgow Whisky has announced an exciting progression to its expanding global whisky business:  the purchase of Tromie Mills Distillery Limited, owner of the site in Drumguish, Kingussie, renowned as one of the most picturesque distillery sites in Scotland.

Located in the magnificent Cairngorms National Park, the new owners have undertaken to commit significant investment to build a contemporary, more environmentally sustainable and energy efficient distillery, whilst remaining sympathetic to the heritage of the site and maintaining the traditional and established methods of distilling quality single malt Scotch whisky.

Glasgow Whisky has confirmed that the current tenant, Speyside Distillers, will continue to operate from the Drumguish site until their lease expires in Spring 2025, with Speyside Distillers announcing their own plans to build a distillery earlier this year. The refurbishment by Glasgow Whisky will commence from Spring 2025, working with suppliers from the local Speyside area.

Since being founded in 2007, Glasgow Whisky has established influential global credentials in both bulk exports and branded cased sales. As the company now ventures into purchasing its first distillery site, owners Graham Taylor and Stuart Hendry – who have over 70 years of combined industry experience – are delighted at how the business is evolving.

Graham commented: “The addition of a distillery in Drumguish is an exciting and natural progression as we continue to build for the future. Since our launch in 2007, we have seen significant growth in all areas of our Scotch whisky brands and products across the globe. The distillery will enable us to add to our portfolio and continue to supply our clients around the world with quality Scotch whisky.”

Stuart continued: “Our plans for the distillery will give us the opportunity to celebrate an established and known site, whilst bringing it into the 21st century in terms of distilling innovation, sustainability and production methods. We are extremely excited to have this opportunity to evolve our business.”

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky Distillers’ Association today announced that this year’s Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame® induction and ceremony has been canceled.

Created by the KDA in 2001, the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame® recognizes individuals and organizations that have made a significant and transformational impact on Bourbon’s stature, growth and awareness.

It is the highest honor given by the signature industry and is presented annually during the Kentucky Bourbon Festival in Bardstown in September.

KDA President Eric Gregory said the prestigious event is known for its intimate celebration of the industry’s most revered champions and attracts dignitaries from around the country.

“While we are encouraged with vaccination rates and declining cases in Kentucky, the KDA Board of Directors does not want to diminish this elite event or take a chance and possibly endanger any of our industry’s legends, their families and friends,” Gregory said.

“The Hall of Fame is one of our industry’s most cherished events when we all come together and commend the storied legacies and achievements of these iconic individuals. We look forward to holding a proper, in-person ceremony next year.”

Founded in 1880, the Kentucky Distillers’ Association is the legendary voice for Kentucky’s signature Bourbon and distilled spirits industry. New Releases from GlenAllachie at The Inverurie Whisky Shop – Scotch Whisky News

GlenAllachie Wine Cask Finish

Glenallachie has released these wonderful Wine Cask Finishes in a unique tasting trilogy. To craft The GlenAllachie Wine Series, the distillery expertly matured spirit in American Oak Ex-Bourbon Barrels.

Subsequently, the whisky underwent additional maturation for almost two years in Wine Barriques meticulously sourced by Master Distiller Billy Walker, imparting a distinctive twist onto the GlenAllachie spirit.

Factors such as the oak species, level of toasting, and coopering of the cask each leave a unique mark on the slumbering spirit. The oak itself was previously influenced by the grape variety and terroir of the winery; thus, the wood adds distinctive layers of complexity, depth and charm.

Enjoy!

If there’s one thing that’s true, it’s the fact that Blended Whisky has many fans, and we’re certainly one of them! We’re showcasing one to get your senses tingling. Adelphi’s fantastic ‘Dancey’ man label Blended Whisky, full of ripe flavours, and a honey sweet blend which is punching well above it’s weight. At only £21.50…it’s an absolute no brainer

Order Now >

From Adelphi an eye catching blended whisky.
From loyal old mature private stock.

The Adelphi ‘Dancey Man’ a mid-19th century cartoon, depicts Sir William Gladstone, as chancellor of the exchequer, performing an energetic Pas de Bas over an ear of barley, to celebrate the passing of a new law that revenue could only be raised on the amount of whisky left in each cask after maturation, and not the level that it was originally filled to. With the penalties for long term maturation lifted, scotch whisky was kept in the cask until it was truly fit to consume.

A remarkably smooth and honey-sweet blend with hints of the sea, chilli pepper, walnuts and distant peat fires.

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 380: Glentoshan 5 Year Old Pure Malt – Scotch Whisky News

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 380: Glentoshan 5 Year Old Pure Malt

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries a golden oldie Glentoshan. What? Yup. This Pure Malt from the 1970s appeared as Glentoshan on the Italian market. Glen Grant was the most popular malt – and is still very popular – so then-owners of Auchentoshan decided to launch their triple distilled malt with ‘Glen’ in the name. It worked. Glentoshan sold very well. Some cases were recently discovered in an Italian basement and Mark was able to secure 6 bottles. But would it still be tasty? The screwcap was tight, the tax seal in perfect condition and the fill level was in the upper neck. Very well preserved, so Mark’s hopes are high.

Loch Lomond Whiskies Unveils Rare 45 Year Old  – Scotch Whisky News

Loch Lomond Whiskies unveils rare 45 Year Old

Only 200 bottles of the super-premium expression are currently available

Award-winning independent distiller, Loch Lomond Whiskies, has unveiled its newest aged single malt; a 45 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

The expression is the first of three releases in The Remarkable Stills Series of single malts to be released by the distillery which celebrate its innovative and unique straight neck pot stills.

Distilled in 1973, the super-premium Loch Lomond 45 Year Old has matured in American oak casks, before finishing for one year in a first-fill oloroso sherry cask to add a distinct sweet flavour.

The liquid is presented in a Loch Lomond premium bottle, complete with a debossed copper plaque, and enclosed in a beautifully crafted oak wood box designed to mirror the design of the Loch Lomond straight neck pot stills. Only 200 individually numbered bottles have been released, making it one of Loch Lomond Whiskies’ rarest expressions to date.

The launch of the Loch Lomond 45 year old is the first in the distillery’s new Remarkable Stills series, a collection that will shine a spotlight on the Alexandria-based distillery’s innovative straight neck pot stills. The stills, which are unique to Loch Lomond, gives the distiller more control of the type of spirit produced, allowing for greater separation of flavours, helping to create the distinct fruity characters that Loch Lomond has become famous for.

The Loch Lomond 45 Year Old showcases flavours of red apple, pear, tropical fruits and honey. On the nose, the expression presents floral scents, before offering notes of orange blossom and melted brown sugar. The finish is long, and presents waves of warming cinnamon spice and tart green fruits.

Bottled at 42.2% and non-chill filtered, allowing the signature Loch Lomond flavours to come through, the Loch Lomond 45 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is priced at £3,450.

To mark the launch of the rare expression, a new webpage has been created which details exactly how the liquid was created, over more than four decades. The webpage details the characteristics of Loch Lomond’s unique pot stills, a key element to the creation of Loch Lomond 45 Year Old.

Master Blender, Michael Henry said: “Our straight neck pot stills connect us to the spirit of innovation that was built into our distillery from the beginning, and places flavour at the centre of what we do. It is only fitting that we mark their significance to us through the Remarkable Stills Series.

“It has been a pleasure working on the creation of the Loch Lomond 45 Year Old, our first release of the series. It is a truly beautiful expression and captures the essence of the Loch Lomond Whiskies spirit perfectly.

“After 45 years aging in American oak and oloroso sherry casks, the whisky retains the character of the distillery, and showcases Loch Lomond Whiskies signature fruity flavour beautifully. The flavours of the expression are wonderfully unique, and we hope whisky lovers will enjoy it.”

The launch of the 45 Year Old follows a branding refresh and extension of the Loch Lomond Whiskies portfolio which took place earlier this year. This included the introduction of a 21 and 30 Year Old to the range.

John Grieveson, Chief Marketing Officer at Loch Lomond Group, said: “The Loch Lomond 45 Year Old is an exquisite single malt and we are very proud to launch it to market. A wealth of experience and craftsmanship goes into each of our expressions, and the Loch Lomond 45 Year Old is no exception. It’s a fantastic edition to our range of single malts and as the first expression in our Remarkable Stills Series, we’re very excited about its launch.”

Founded in 1814, the Loch Lomond distillery can trace its roots back to the Littlemill distillery, which was established in 1772 and is the oldest licensed distillery in the world. Its current distillery, in Alexandria, Dunbartonshire, close to the banks of Loch Lomond, was built in 1965 with first distillation in 1966.

When it opened, Loch Lomond distillery’s ground-breaking straight necked pot stills were a revelation, enabling production of a lighter, fruitier spirit and greater control over the whisky’s character. Under the later ownership of the Bulloch family further distilling innovation took place with the aim of being self-sufficient. It is among only four distilleries in the Scotch whisky industry to maintain an onsite cooperage which  maintains and repairs up to 10,000 casks annually.

Singleton of Glen Ord 38 Year Old and The Singleton Range at The Whisky Exchange – Scotch Whisky News

Singleton of Glen Ord 38 Year Old and The Singleton Range

The Singleton range of single malt whiskies is available around the world, but is often misunderstood. With the recent arrival of the Singleton of Glen Ord 38 Year Old at The Whisky Exchange, we thought we’d break it down and explain how it all fits together.

Three in one

While the name suggest singleness, The Singleton range is actually made up of whiskies from three different distilleries – Dufftown, Glendullan and Glen Ord. They’re not even the first distilleries to use the name Singleton: The Singleton of Auchroisk was discontinued by Diageo (owners of all four distilleries) in 2001, but the name was too good to leave unused.

Originally, each of the three whiskies was available in a different part of the world – Dufftown in Europe, Glendullan in the USA and Glen Ord in the far east. For a while, this caused dismay for fans of the distilleries that appeared on the other side of the world, but the past few years have seen those divisions soften, and each of the three is popping up around the globe.

The Singleton of Dufftown

The best known of the three to us here in the UK, Dufftown sits in the town of the same name, the busiest whisky town in Scotland. It’s had ten distilleries operating over the years, with as many as seven running at the same time, but is now down to just six: Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Kininvie, Mortlach, Glendullan (of which more later) and the eponymous Dufftown.

For a distillery that’s so little known, it’s surprisingly big, sitting at joint 13th place in the production capacity league at 6 million litres of alcohol a year. It’s been around since the end of the 1800s and has long been a key part of the Bell’s blend. However, when the Singleton range appeared in the early 2000s, it was finally given its day in the sun, and is now also available as a single malt.

Dufftown’s spirit is grassy and fruity, and after years of maturation its sweet character is a classic example of Speyside single malt.

The Singleton of Glendullan

Glendullan was opened a few years after Dufftown, and other than Kininvie – built in 1990 – is the newest of the town’s distilleries. Also like Dufftown Distillery, it’s much larger than you’d expect a lesser-known distillery to be, producing as much as 5 million litres of alcohol a year. Dufftown really is a powerhouse of whisky making, producing more than 10% of Scotland’s spirit each year. Six distilleries and lots of whisky? Maybe it should be its own region…

While the distillery name and site date back to the 19th century, the current distillery was built in 1972, right next door to the old distillery. They operated in tandem for a few years, but the old one was eventually demolished. Like Dufftown, it makes a grassy spirit, but after a few years in wood it takes on a much fruitier character – lots of citrus, with an occasional handful of nuts.

Other than in The Singleton range, it’s had a few outings, popping up in the Rare Malts back in the 1990s and 2000s, and even appearing in the Game of Thrones series representing House Tully. These days it is most commonly found in the USA, but you do find the occasional bottle back in the UK.

The Singleton of Glen Ord

Of the three Singleton distilleries, Glen Ord is the one that I’ve always found the most interesting. Not only are its older releases whiskies that I’m still kicking myself for not stocking up on (we had an offer on the Glen Ord 28yo when I started at The Whisky Exchange that I really should have considered more closely), it’s also next door to Glen Ord maltings, a veritable temple to grain that I still feel honoured to have visited.

Founded in 1838, it’s not only the oldest of the three Singletons, but also, since 2015, the largest, sitting at number six in the Scottish league table with 11 million litres of alcohol produced each year.

We’ve seen more whisky from Ord than the other two Singletons, and over the century or so that it has been exported around the world, it has been especially popular in the far east, and was the obvious choice to be the Asian entry in The Singleton range when it launched. Fortunately for fans like me, it’s now much more available back home.

The Singleton of Glen Ord 38 Year Old

This special edition appeared in 2020, a vatting of just six casks that pushes the idea of ‘finishing’ a whisky to its limit – reracked after just 12 years in refill casks, it spent the next 26 years in a mixture of new oak, bourbon and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The casks were married and bottled at cask strength, one of the oldest Ords bottled by the distillery and the longest secondary maturation it has ever done.

Nose: Rich, thick and decadent custard tart – creamy with loads of vanilla, a grate of lemon, buttery pastry and a hint of crunchy caramel. Butterscotch notes build along with a hint of mint, pine needles and hints of orange zest.

Palate: Cream and butter lead, backed by flamed orange zest, lemon rind and butterscotch. Polished oak, apple pies and old, damp wood hide at the back. The leafiness from the nose shows as freshly cut autumn leaves, with soft forest-floor rancio.

Finish: Butter cookies, polished oak and butter-glazed baked apples. Anise lingers.

Comment: Old, elegant and complex, bringing together Ord’s core character of orchard fruit with long-aged notes of leaves and cask-focused sweetness.

Buy now >

It’s a top dram – not many whiskies get 92 points on Whisky Fun – and an interesting look into Diageo’s warehouses. Which other distilleries are they nurturing old casks from? There are rumblings that we’ll soon see something venerable and tasty in The Singleton range, but from the tales I’ve heard, there are even more interesting things to come.
